This is a special live recording featuring professional runner and 3x national champion Annie Rodenfels, in conversation with WRS host and producer Cherie; that's me. We sat down at the Tracksmith track house in Boston on Sat., March 22, with a wonderful crowd on a beautiful morning to have this fantastic conversation. Annie Rodenfels is a born competitor. We get into how she progressed from being a high school soccer player who ran track and field, to a top NCAA DIII runner, and then to one of the best distance racers in the US. This is not a common trajectory: most DIII runners don't turn pro, let alone become one of the best in the pro field. Rodenfels has worked smart and hard to get here, developing her strength, skill, and ability. It's been a years long, step by step process, and all along the way, Rodenfels continues to rise to the occasion. Among her many professional career highlights, Rodenfels is the 2023 and 2024 5k National Champion, and the 2024 6k National Champion. And she won the first 10k she ever raced, the prestigious Boston 10k for Women, in 2023. Through it all, Rodenfels's training, mental game, confidence, and racing style has evolved, and she gets into it all. Today's podcast is with David Kerin. Dave is the USATF chair of men's development, and also chair for men's and women's high jump. Dave's coaching career began with 14 years at the HS level followed by 14 years of collegiate coaching where an athlete set a still-standing NCAA DIII championship record in women's high jump. A requested speaker and published author, he is perhaps best known for his work: “What is the most direct means to achieve strength gains specific to the demands of jumping events”, as well as the popular article: “Fixing the Right Problem”. David appeared originally back on episode #58 of the podcast in its “classic” days. Curvilinear sprinting is a critical aspect of sport movement, and is also becoming more popular in training, and for good reason. Lateral and rotational aspects of movement are not only critical for sport, but also engage a greater fullness of the body in a training environment. On today's podcast, David goes into the defining elements of curvilinear sprinting, and what this means, not only for track and field high jump, but athletic movements in general. He also gets into the importance of observing and coaching athletic movement from a 3D perspective, and gives ideas on how to do so, as well as the evolution that technology is making in that direction. Today's podcast gives us a wonderful perspective on a more complete picture of athletic movement and performance. Today's episode is brought to you by Lost Empire Herbs, TeamBuildr and the Plyomat. "Into angular momentum (in curve running), because the progressive increase in the Fibonacci number, acceleration angles of redirection, you've got an acceleration in the middle. It's a spiral effect where you're speeding up." “"The analogy would be the figure skater at the big finish when they start spinning and they've extend their arms and as they draw into the center line or the long axis of the body, they accelerate. So it's not linear acceleration in the traditional sense, yet you are increasing velocity of the plant by leaning on angular momentum. So again, whether it's running the bases, whether it's the NBA player trying to turn the corner, whether it's guy on the soccer pitch or the receiver running the pattern,

Kassie Parker just finished one of the most successful NCAA DIII careers on record. On the indoor and outdoor track and in cross country, racing for Loras College, she set records, helped her team reach its first national title, and won numerous national titles herself. Parker graduated in May 2023 and immediately moved into her pro career. She ran her first post-collegiate pro-elite race at the USATF 6km National Championships, earning a solid eighth place. Then, she set her sights on the Bix 7, this year the 7-mile USATF National Championships, which took place on July 29, 2023, in Davenport, Iowa. Kassie tells the story of her incredible collegiate career and then, how it all went down at the 7-mile champs. She also announces her next big move, becoming a member of the Hansons Brooks ODP Professional Running Team. The USATF 7-mile National Championships is a part of the championship series of races, for various different distances, that happen around the country throughout the year. #pedrovebber #goshen #greenvilleuniversity

Former Pfeiffer head coach Jordan Stampler joined Justin Haire's staff as Director of Player Development in August 2020. Stampler came to Campbell after leading the Pfeiffer baseball program for the last three seasons, and five total years with the Falcons, previously serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “We are very excited to have Coach Stampler join our staff,” said Haire. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will not only help our student-athletes develop, but will also help our coaching staff to grow and get better. He is someone that I have known for a long time, and are very fortunate to be able to add someone with so much value to our program.” Stampler helped lead Pfeiffer to a Conference Carolinas Championship game appearance in 2016 despite entering the tournament as the number six seed. Pfeiffer upset top-seed Erskine, coming within one game of advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In 2017, Stampler assisted as the program made another Cinderella run in the conference tournament. In the opener, Pfeiffer defeated the No. 1 seed and top-ranked team in all of Division II Mount Olive by a score of 9-2. Pfeiffer used an 8-run sixth inning and scored all eight runs off Bruce Zimmermann who would later be drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 5th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. In 2018, during the Falcons' first year of NCAA DIII competition, Stampler led the program to a record of 31-7, topping the conference in the regular season. Pfeiffer also set multiple school records in 2018, including team batting average at .348, team on-base percentage at .447 and overall winning percentage at .775. In 2019, Stampler's Falcons captured the ECAC Division III title with a 9-7 win over Grove City College, finishing the year with a 30-8 record and a 17-6 mark in USA South play. Stampler helped Falcon great Nick Richmond to a career year as well, who would secure a spot in the illustrious Cape Cod Collegiate Summer League, and later signed by the Detroit Tigers. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Stampler began his coaching career at Adrian College as the program's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2014, helping guide the Bulldogs to a 33-15 mark and an MIAA regular season and conference tournament title. Adrian advanced all the way to the NCAA Midwest Regional, winning three games in the NCAA Tournament. In 2015, Stampler moved back to his alma mater, USC Upstate, as a volunteer coach for half a year before being promoted to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. At Upstate, Stampler coached Tyler Jackson who was later signed as a free agent to the Seattle Mariners organization. In addition to Jackson and Richmond, Stampler has coached six others who have gone on to play professionally. Kirby Lambert (Roswell Invaders), Derek Perry (Lake Erie Crushers), Blake Whitney (Chicago Cubs), Sam Fischer (Gateway Grizzlies), Ryan Darrow (Hickory Crawdads) and Ian Mikowski (Eastside Diamond Hoppers), while Charlie Carpenter was a 26th round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves before returning to school. Stampler played two years at USC Upstate, seeing time in 108 games while tallying 88 runs, 113 hits and 42 runs batted in. His 44 runs scored in each of the 2012 and 2013 seasons rank him fourth in program history and his 29 walks in 2013 places him fifth. Additionally, Stampler owns the top two marks in Spartan history for most hit by pitches in a season, getting plunked 18 teams in 2012 and 16 in 2013. He graduated from USC Upstate with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2013, going on to earning a M.S. in Leadership from Pfeiffer University in 2017. He is married to his wife, Hannah.

Coach Rob Burke shares his journey from growing up the son of a college basketball coach to becoming a successful college coach in his own right. Coach Burke played at Chowan after they transitioned from NJCAA to NCAA DIII, but grew up with the likes of Nate McMillian playing for his father [the late but GREAT Bob Burke]. He followed in his father's footsteps when he was a player/coach overseas and then entered the college ranks at Limestone working under Larry Epperly. From Limestone he moved onto Campbell before becoming a Head Coach at Spartanburg Methodist College (JUCO). His teams at SMC went 117-67 and he helped send 32 players D1 & D2. He was named the NJCAA Region 10 COY in 2008-09. From Spartanburg he moved onto be an Assistant Coach at The Citadel. After a four year run at The Citadel he joined Mark Byington's coaching staff as the DOBO at Georgia Southern and helped to turn that program around. CB McGrath was hired at UNC Wilmington and hired Coach Burke as his DOBO, each season he was promoted - eventually becoming the Interim HC after starting the season as the "3rd Assistant Coach". Ultimately the staff was dismissed and he took an unpaid Assistant Coach position at Colorado College (NCAA DIII) in January of 2021. After the season he was hired for his dream job - the Head Coach at his alma mater where he'll coach on the "Bob Burke Court". **This was recorded PRIOR to the Chowan HC job opening and him being hired**
Coach Justin Bradley shares his journey from growing up in North Carolina and being a Student Athlete and then a Student Assistant at Guilford College (NCAA DIII) to becoming the Associate Head Coach at Dartmouth. After graduating from Guilford he became the Director of Operations at NC Central and Coach LeVelle Moton promoted him to Graduate Manager the next season. The role/promotion was calculated - and Coach Bradley's decision! Dartmouth hired him in 2015 and he served as an Assistant Coach before the Head Coach was let go. Despite most of his friends encouraging him not to "drop down" to NCAA DIII, he accepted a position on staff at Williams College. After two years at Williams he returned to Dartmouth and was promoted to Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator.
Coach Tony Shaver shares his coaching journey from being a Student Assistant with the UNC JV Team while also playing for Dean Smith to becoming the all time winningest coach in the history of Hampden-Sydney as well as William & Mary. While playing in Chapel Hill, UNC went 95-26, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament in 1975 and 1976. During the 1975 season, the Tar Heels won the ACC Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16. During the 1973 and 1974 season, UNC made the National Invitational Tournament. The High Point, NC native talks about coaching at Episcopal HS in Alexandria Virginia and what led him to chase the dream of being a college basketball coach. At Hampden-Sydney College (NCAA DIII) he coached many student athletes who went on to coach basketball (Andy Gray, Ryan Odom, Griff Aldrich, Dee Vick, Russell Turner and lots more) and he wore multiple hats. The three-time ODAC Coach of the Year led them to 358 wins including 207 wins in the ODAC, during his 17 years at the helm. During his tenure they made 11 NCAA Tournament appearances including 7 trips to the Sweet Sixteen and 2 trips to the Final Four. They were the runner up of the 1999 NCAA DIII national championship after suffering a double-overtime 1-point loss to Bo Ryan's University of Wisconsin–Platteville team in the national championship game. He left H-S as the all time leader in coaching victories to become the Head Coach at William & Mary. In Williamsburg he was a two-time Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year and was twice selected as a finalist for the National Mid-Major Coach of the Year. The Tribe has posted four of its nine 20-win seasons under Coach Shaver. W&M recorded three-straight 20-win seasons in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, marking just the second streak of three years in program history. The Tribe captured the CAA regular season Championship in 2015. Twice, Shaver led the program to berths in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), only the second and third post season bids in program history. His teams reached 4 CAA tournament championship appearances and even notched victories over ACC programs Wake Forest and Maryland. His win total at William & Mary is more than twice as much as any other coach in the history of the program. Coach Shaver answers the question about what's next for him as far as coaching basketball is concerned and much more!

Former Springfield College Wrestling Assistant Coach (2010-13), and current Head Coach at Sacramento City College, Marques Gales joins the PrideCast to reflect on his time on Alden Street. Gales' stint with the Pride included being an assistant on staff for the final season of Darryl Arroyo's storied tenure, while also coaching six NCAA DIII All-Americans, and an NCAA Champion in Devin Biscaha (2013). Biscaha was the first national champion since the late, Jeff Blatnick (1978, 1979). Hailing from the Bay Area, Gales competed for Santa Rosa Junior College from 2005-07 while earning his associate's degree. This afforded him an opportunity to wrestle for the late, Hall of Fame and National Championship Coach, Lars Jensen at San Francisco State University. As a Gator, Gales placed in the region twice, earned scholar all-america honors, and qualified for the NCAA DII Championships. The California native earned a Master's in Sport and Exercise Psychology while at Springfield. Trustees and Presidents- Opportunities and Challenges In Intercollegiate Athletics
Let me introduce you to Vaughn College (NY). It is a unique place to be a college athlete, because one of its main academic majors is aviation. And as you may know, the airlines have been deeply impacted by the current recession. My guest is Dr. Sharon DeVivo, the President of Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, and their first female president. Vaughn is located in Flushing, NY, a stone’s throw from LaGuardia Airport. Our conversation covers a review of a very different pandemic landscape at a four year college that produces the human capital of the airline industry. Many students come from families living in one of the five Boroughs of New York City, and where one wage earner has lost their job. When you look at the airline industry right now, 30,000 airline employees were laid off in October alone. We discuss the tension that creates on campus for faculty, staff and athletic coaches to keep students engaged, while maintaining some semblance of an athletic season and academic progress. Vaughn proudly states “We were ranked #1 in the nation in upward mobility in a study published in The New York Times and were the best at helping students move from the lower income brackets to the top.” And their athletic program is like an NCAA DIII program, except it's not. A deeper look at a most unusual college at a most unusual time. (and we do alot of laughing). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/karen-weaver/message

Welcome to the Through the Point Podcast, the world's #1 (and only) javelin specific podcast This week I was fortunate enough to have on someone who as a former DIII thrower myself, I admired for his amazing performances That person is NCAA DIII record holder Tim VanLiew Tim threw 75.55m at a DIII school so we need to appreciate that for a second, completely insane haha Tim was also a soccer player in college who considered track his second sport. He threw a bit in high school but didn't even plan to throw at his school of Rutgers Camden But as with many of my guests, the javelin somehow makes its way into their lives A crazy fact about Tim is that he said he only threw off a real runway TWICE while training in college My biggest take away from this was our discussion about the right “fit” for schools and not just focusing on the glamour. So high school athletes, pay attention! Haha I appreciate Tim taking the time to talk to me, and hopefully you can all learn something from it! As always, thanks for listening and enjoy! Today’s episode features track coach and acupuncture student, Sam Wuest. Sam is finishing his acupuncture degree at New England School of Acupuncture and is a track and field coach at Tufts University. Sam is a former NCAA DI athlete, and holds multiple certifications in strength and conditioning and track and field. Sam has worked with a diverse array of athletes and has also studied under Ukranian Olympic coach, Alex Ponomarenko. He coached the recent NCAA DIII high jump champion in the 2018 indoor season, Stefan Duvivier who jumped 2.20m. Sam has blended Western sport performance with Eastern practices, such as acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Zen Meditation, qi gong and tai chi. When it comes to Sam’s coaching philosophy, as well as this podcast in general, the goal is always to find a blend of ideas from different ends of the spectrum, from the quantitative, data-based realms, to the qualitative and intuitive end. To this end, this episode is largely about Sam’s outside the box thinking in coaching and recovery. From his incorporation of multiple planes into basic track and field drills, to feel-based integration of Frans Bosch style stick drills, to avoiding the visual bias in athlete feedback via iPhones and iPads, Sam has a coaching style that is holistic and effective. Sam also has connected training with common concepts in Chinese medicine, including his thoughts on recovery modalities, as well as linking of the seasons and human response into our own models and thoughts on training organization (noting the similarities observed in the practices of Dr. Yuri Verkhoshansky). Another coach who has done just this was the late Charles Poliquin, an absolute legend in this field. We’ll get into these topics and more on a show today that is certain to expand your perspective on training athletes. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points Ways to incorporate and create awareness of rotational mechanics in sport movement The faults of a “brace” oriented core movement model in athletics Sam’s utilization of various sensory feedback drills in sprinting How Sam utilizes rhythm and timing in his programming and why we tend to be “over-visual” in how we train and coach athletes Sam’s utilization of recovery modalities Things Chinese medicine has taught Sam about training and recovery Ideas on periodization and training organization based off of seasonal effects on athletes from a holistic perspective “If you watch the best sprinters in the world, they are not going straight forward and back, there is a rotational element” “There are a whole lot of extensions going on when you push off the ground, and one of them is that lateral plane, and if you aren’t not getting that, you are operating with shorter legs than you need to” “The same still frames that you got from USATF level whatever back in the 90’s is still true, you have to make sure that what happens in between (tri-planar actions) we really optimize” “There are only so many KPI’s that you can show statically. There are other KPI’s that are going on that you can’t show (on a single frame) because they are dynamic, they are a motion” “If you are holding a stick on your shoulders, you know where your shoulders are, you know where their hips are” “Sometimes in order to get an athlete to change what they need to do, you need to put them in an environment where that bad habit no longer works, and they have to feel that” “I almost never do stick (on the back) drills, and (finish) on a stick drill….. I’ll have the kids drop halfway through” “If your timing is off, there is no chance you are going to hit (the position you want)” “If you are not hitting a rhythm when you jump, your position will be off” “I spent a whole year last year,
It's almost every high school player's dream to play competitive baseball at the collegiate level. While most assume that means at a NCAA Division I program, it's safe to say that playing for a baseball team that consistently makes the postseason would satisfy the desire for competition. Trinity University in San Antonio does just that. Consistent postseason berths and a current preseason ranking of 4th overall in NCAA DIII makes this an attractive spot. Couple the program competitiveness with top tier academics and it's easy to see why Head Coach Tim Scannell fosters strong recruiting classes.

Today’s guest is Dave Kerin, USATF development, men’s and women’s high jump chair. Dave has been a contributor to Just Fly Sports in the past in the popular squat depth roundtable. Dave has worked with athletes of many levels, and has great results to his name, including a NCAA DIII championship record holder in high jump. Dave has been a strong influence in my knowledge of high jump, particularly on what it takes to be good on an elite level, and what guys jumping over 2.40m are doing versus guys who are jumping less. Aside from this, Dave has been a fantastic contributor to generally applicable sport science concepts, such as his work : What is the most direct means to achieve strength gains specific to the demands of jumping events . Dave is a regular contributor to expert roundtables on the jumping events, and his knowledge of the biomechanics and training concepts for the track and field jumps can be useful for any coach. On today’s podcast, we’ll get into many aspects of track jumps and related training, and ideas that can be universally applied. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Dave’s background in track and field Individualizing plyometrics to athletes Finding an athlete’s force/speed profile in context of track jumps Hypertrophy guidelines for jump athletes Single leg jump takeoffs on the ball of the foot Flat foot vs. full foot contacts in plyometrics Predispositions for flop vs. straddle style high jumpers Quotes “A jump is something undertaken from a standing position. The preponderance in athletic pursuits is not what I would call a jump, it is a deflection” “You have them throw 3 throws with the heaviest (8lb) implement, take the middle performance of the three efforts, then drop down to the 6lb ball, same thing, drop to the 4lb, same thing. If a person is neurally wired, they should be able to accelerate the lighter implement” “I gotta think that a woman who is going to jump 2 meters in the high jump is going to throw an OHB (overhead back throw) 15 meters” “I find a lot of commonalities of OHB and high jump” “There are a lot of high jumpers masquerading as long jumpers because they don’t add the third dimension” “In order to jump, you have to sacrifice horizontal velocity to redirect the path of the center of mass” “The greater force we deliver to the ground, the greater potential force we stand to gain on the back side of the vector” “The golden rule is to apply the greatest amount of force, in the greatest range of motion, over the shortest amount of time” “Kids aren’t as universally athletic as they were 20-30 years ago” About Dave Kerin Dave Kerin is the USATF chair of men’s development, and also chair for men’s and women’s high jump. His time has coincided with a resurgence in the event. Dave’s coaching career began with 14 years at the HS level followed by 14 years of collegiate coaching where an athlete set a still standing NCAA DIII championship record in women’s high jump. A requested speaker and published author, he is perhaps best known for his work: “What is the most direct means to achieve strength gains specific to the demands of jumping events”. He also presented that topic at the 2008 USATF SuperClinic
In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview the CEO of the Run Gum Company, and USA Track and Field 800-meter Olympian, Nick Symmonds. If you guys are inspired by the stories that my interviewees and I share with you each week, please consider becoming a patron of my podcast at https://www.patreon.com/keepmovingforward. Of course, all episodes will still be free both on iTunes and at http://keepmovingforward.us/, however, if you would like to ensure my future success, your support would be much appreciated. “Find a way.” The mantra of any person who ever wanted to accomplish something greater than himself. No matter the insurmountable odds, the treacherous landscape, the uncertain road ahead, if the desire and passion is great enough, you will find a way. These are words to live by. But how do you go about achieving that courage to push forward no matter what? How do you know that you’ve truly given it your all in pursuit of finding a way to accomplish your dreams? For the answer, we can turn to Nick Symmonds. Coming out of a NCAA Division III school, Nick found himself on both the 2008 and 2012 US Olympic teams, a feat that is rarely heard of, as your top tier athletes generally come from institutions with Division I athletic programs. However, Nick overcame those odds that seemed to be stacked against him and went on to win 7 NCAA DIII titles, 6 USATF Outdoor National titles, and came in 5th place in the finals of the 800-meter run in the 2012 London Games; clocking in a personal best time of 1:42.95. While still pursuing his athletic career, Nick became victorious in yet another area of life that peaked his interest. Utilizing his knowledge and experience cultivated as a track and field athlete, Nick co-founded his own company, Run Gum. Nick saw a need in the energy drink market and wanted to offer a substitute for products that might weigh a person down. Having an option like gum, rather than the conventional energy drink or bar, would allow a person to better maximize their workout. With his background in biochemistry, Nick created this very piece of gum and branded it on the market as Run Gum, finding a way to turn himself into a successful entrepreneur. He is a person who seems to always find a way to succeed and bring his best self to the track and to the office. I want to thank him for taking time out of his day to speak with me about his journey, and I hope that you enjoy my interview with Nick Symmonds. If you would like to learn more about this professional athlete turned entrepreneur, visit http://www.nicksymmonds.com/nick-symmonds/ and follow him on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @NickSymmonds. For more information about Nick’s company, Run Gum, check out https://rungum.com/ and follow on Facebook, Istagram, and Twitter @RunGum.
