Hi, James Navé here, your host for Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm pleased to welcome master painter Paul Pascarella (www.paulpascarella.com) to the microphone. The title of this Twice 5 Miles conversation is Shadows, Color, Stories, and Light.  Here's what Paul says about his work.
There are many aspects and practices in my life that are also responsible for my paintings than just years of experience in the studio. It seems that my visceral experiences are recorded into a memory bank in some form that can be drawn upon when getting myself clear enough in the moment of artistic expression. My practice of Qigong and Internal meditation practice are an example. The movement from Qigong and Taiji ad to my movement of painting with my whole body. Skiing and hiking in the rugged mountains around Taos is constantly showing up in my visual art. Riding motorcycles on and off road, riding across the desert floor or the feeling of leaning into curves on my Multistrada, those visceral experiences manifest into the painting in many ways. When I say "About Me" these are aspects that are often overlooked but parts of me that are very important not only to my art but as a Human Being in this brief life. It is all, like everything very connected. As for my painting, I wrote this several years ago and it still has value. “I paint almost as an act of automatic writing, walking the line between figurative and absolute abstraction by textually and lyrically using this language of ambiguity. Willingly or not, the ambiguousness of my paintings takes hold of the imagination like looking at clouds, and puts it to work. I think of the painting, then, dancing on the edge of chaos until viewed by the subjective imagination of the viewer. Painting the large abstracts, like the New Moon Series is often like walking into a forest without a thought of return, no going back to safety.

In this week's episode, I talk about my obsession with color and how I love to tell color stories in my art. I share my strong feelings and opinions about colors that goes back to my childhood as a sassy little kid. I share the techniques I use currently in my art practice, how I play with colors across different mediums and what I do to continue to expand my color horizons. I love to tell color stories in my art and thinking about them as stories makes it really playful and fun. I don't like using color theory or color wheels because they feel too intellectual and not intuitive enough for me, however I understand why they can be helpful as doorways into exploring color. I share how I use color in my mixed media collages, fabric meditation books and drawings and how play and experimentation are essential for me to move forward with my work in general and with my color language. You can examples of my colorful artwork at www.emmafreemandesigns.com. I mention that I started a Patreon page to support this creative project of mine. If you'd like to support this podcast project, you can visit my Patreon page here: https://www.patreon.com/emmafreeman?fan_landing=true. Emma Freeman is a queer mixed media artist and teaching artist based in Wisconsin. She works in many mediums including textiles, fibers, collage, slow stitching, book making, printmaking, mark making and cyanotype. She teaches art classes online that are playful and experimental. Her practice is meditative, tactile and contemplative. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/emma-freeman-art/message

Praise for Queer & Trans Artists of Color Vol 2 “Nia King’s essential project is about demystifying the artist’s life, and centering expression at the heart of radically diverse QTPOC lives. This second volume of artists’ voices is full of heart and wisdom, struggle and triumph. Another must-read for anyone dedicated to living creatively.” —Jeff Chang, author of Who We Be and We Gon’ Be Alright“With all the talk in the entertainment industry about a lack of diverse voices in our media, Nia King does the big work that is necessary to rescue the entertainment industry from itself. She is going out there to highlight these voices, not because they are diverse, but because they are absolutely necessary.” —W. Kamau Bell, host of United Shades of America“Queer and Trans Artists of Color, Volume 2 continues to amplify beautiful voices that need to be heard. Refreshingly honest and illuminating, these interviews combine to form a powerful statement on the journey of the artist, and the person behind the art, towards creating a world where we can all thrive as our true selves.” —Mat Johnson, author of Loving Day and Pym“Nia King once again provides a vital space where LGBTQ artists of color can share their unique experiences working in their creative fields. This volume, like its predecessor, will be a must-read for years to come.” —Hari Kondabolu, writer and comedian“This book shines a spotlight on QTPOC artists, activists and self-proclaimed weirdos, a group who rarely receive such attention. Through fluid and compelling conversations with King, readers learn about the creative processes, identities, organizing, and politics that inform their art. This is a beautiful archive as well as a rich source of information for creative people seeking inspiration.” —Farzana Doctor, author of All Inclusive and Six Metres of Pavement“In this new volume Nia King continues the invaluable work of amplifying the voices and interrogating the ideas of a new generation of joyous, committed creators. If you want to know who is shaping the culture of the next century, this is a book you must have: a book brimming with honesty, intelligence and heart.” —Nayland Blake, artist and professor“This book is a revolutionary literary gesture, providing both practical information to artists and also doing the work of expanding the archive. I love the way that King brings interviews to the page, disseminating artists’ knowledge while also creating a window into their language and lives. The honesty of the unscripted conversations feels both intimate and subversive.”—Virgie Tovar, author of Hot & Heavy: Fierce Fat Girls on Life, Love and Fashion Nia King is a queer Black, Lebanese, Hungarian, and Jewish artist and activist from Canton, Massachusetts living in Oakland, California.
