In part two of the Crafty Beer Girls Podcast reunion, the girls ask of their sound engineer and editor, Mike The Janitor, what he was up to during their over two year hiatus. They get more than they bargained for as he gets raw and emotional. They also enjoy numerous beers (notably from Utah's own Red Rock Brewing Company), have discussions about Robin Williams and Bill Paxton, make several references to old television shows and a hodge-podge of this and that. Honestly, it's not long before this particular episode goes off the rails.
It's been over two years since we last heard from the Crafty Beer Girls, Lauren Lerch and Jenni Shafer. Where have they been? What have they been up to? Do they have that money they owe us? Whatever the case, the Crafty Beer Girls have returned to share with the listening masses what's been going on. All while sharing beers, stories and movie and television. recommendations. In part one of this reunion, Jenni makes a fantastic beer cocktail while Lauren dishes out her classic sarcasm.
In their return for 2020, the Crafty Beer Girls (Lauren Lerch and Jenni Shafer) sit down and have an in-depth, informative and interesting conversation with Michael Druce. Michael is the Executive Director of the Utah Consumer Coalition. The Utah Consumer Coalition is a non-profit, grassroots alliance of the responsible citizens of Utah who feel that they've been disenfranchised by Utah’s lawmakers and special interest groups when drafting laws that govern the sale of beer in Utah. As the Crafty Beer Girls prepare for their return in 2020, in this episode they highlight some of their more funnier and informative moments from 2019! Coming on Monday, January 27th (sponsored and hosted by Grinder's 13 - Utah's Original Sub Shop since 1973), the Crafty Beer Girls come back to entertain the masses in the Utah craft beer community (and beyond) as they interview Michael Druce, head of the Utah Consumer Coalition. The Utah Consumer Coalition is a grassroots alliance of the responsible citizens of Utah who feel that they've been disenfranchised by Utah’s lawmakers and special interest groups when drafting laws that govern the sale of beer in Utah. Beginning with the 2020 legislative session, the UCC will be advocating for sensible laws that govern the sale of draft beer in Utah’s restaurants, bars and breweries, allowing for all beer to be dispensed directly into a glass. In the most lengthy Crafty Beer Girls Podcasts to date, your hosts, Jenni Shafer and Lauren Lerch, kick things off with an interview involving Jennifer Hamilton. Jennifer (along with her husband Jeff) own and operate Utah's only dedicated hard cider production facility and taphouse, Mountain West Hard Cider. Incidentally, their corporate office conference room, has been a makeshift recording studio for several episodes of the Crafty Beer Girls Podcast. During their interview, they dive into a very interesting and insightful conversation regarding the recent changes in Utah beer laws that happened on November 1st. Utah's law on alcohol content has been raised from 4.0% alcohol by volume to 5.0% alcohol by volume. This momentous change has either been loved and embraced OR downright despised by many in the Utah craft beer industry and the Utah craft beer community. The girls also sample a host of beers. Including several from the Utah craft beer breweries that took home medals from this year's Great American Beer Festival. Five local breweries took home six medals this year. The most awards won by Utah craft beer breweries since 2014. Those breweries were Shades Brewing (Gold), TF Brewing (Silver), Red Rock Brewing (Silver and Bronze) Squatters Craft Beers (Silver) and Lever Crossing Brewing (Bronze). The girls even try a delicious American Wild Ale (snagged by Jenni Shafer during a bike trip she took in New Mexico) from 2019 Great American Beer Festival winner (for Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year), Rowley Farmhouse Ales. The beer, entitled "Songs Of Our Own", was a collaboration beer. Here is a detailed description borrowed from Untappd: "We've been passionate about brewing spontaneously fermented ales for many years, as this is a process that has not only historical significance, but also carries a degree of romance that cannot be matched via traditional industrial brewing techniques. Songs of Our Own is our first commercial foray into spontaneous fermentation, and was completed with the help of the kind folks at 12 West Brewing Company in Mesa, Arizona. We were fortunate enough to have them come up to Santa Fe with their mobile coolship in early 2018. It is the first commercially produced coolship inoculated beer brewed in the state of New Mexico. We aren't calling this a Méthode Traditionnelle beer by any stretch, but simply a start to what we hope to be an annual tradition of local spontaneous fermentations for us. After 16 months of aging in wine barrels, this beer underwent additional refermentation in the barrel with tangerines, and was finished in 750 mL bottles with local wildflower honey. We are happy to release this as our 3rd anniversary beer, and hope you enjoy it as much as we have waiting for it to come around."

Today’s guest is Julie O’Grady, Head of Sales, Marketing, and Events for Liverpool's Neptune Brewery. Although Julie is relatively new to her current full-time role at Neptune, she’s been part of the brewery since it opened in 2015, as she and her husband, Les, founded the brewery together. For the first few years, Julie was working full time for the NHS, then Liverpool City Council, and would help out with brewery on nights and weekends. (She'd squeeze in a few tweets during her lunch break is well!) Julie’s involvement in the beer community goes beyond Neptune though. Just before the brewery opened, Julie founded Ladies That Beer, a meet-up group for beer loving ladies based in Liverpool, because she noticed a lack of women at the beer festivals she was attending. From its beginnings is a social group, Ladies That Beer has taken on new aims to engage, educate, and empower women who love beer. Hence why Julie was one of the co-organizers of the event I recorded at today, the Ladies' Big Beery Meet-up. Julie from Ladies That Beer and Alix Shaw from the Crafty Beer Girls (who you heard from in Episode 002 of Beer with Nat) planned this event in Manchester to bring beer loving ladies from across the country together for an afternoon. And that’s where I recorded my first ever live episode of Beer with Nat! (It's pretty similar to a regular episode, but with a few more woos and claps from my ever-so-engaged audience! Thanks all!) In this episode, Julie talks us through her and Les's decision to open Neptune Brewery (and the fun story of where the name came from!), along with what it was like to balance the brewery work and her full-time job, to when she knew she was ready to make the transition to beer full-time. She tells us what aspects of her work she’s most passionate about, what she likes to get up to outside of beer, and what she enjoys best about being a part of the beer industry. Here she is...
Today’s guest is Jan Rogers, owner and director of Marble Brewery in Manchester. In 1990, Jan turned up for a drink at the Marble Arch pub and – in her words – didn’t go home. She began working at the pub and, when it was facing uncertainty in the late ‘90s, Jan was adamant that karaoke wasn’t the fix. Instead, the decision was made to install a small brew kit in the pub and that’s how Marble Brewery began back in 1997. From Marble’s early days, I ask Jan to reflect on how both the business and the beer industry have changed over the last twenty years. (Yes, it was a big ask, but Jan’s got some great stories and incredible insight to share.) We talk about why she sees the brewery’s small size as an asset and how it’s allowed her to create a sense of community not only within the business, but across the Manchester and broader UK beer scene, too. Jan tells me what aspects of her job she enjoys best, what she’s most proud of, and what her vision is for Marble’s future. Before I turn it over to our conversation, I just wanted to add in a mention of how Jan and I met: Back in November, I headed up to Manchester to record my first ever live episode of Beer with Nat at the Ladies’ Big Beery Meet-up – a meet up of beer-loving ladies from across the country hosted by Ladies that Beer and Crafty Beer Girls – which you’ll hear on my next episode. Jan not only hosted us at one of Marble Brewery’s venues, 57 Thomas Street, she also agreed to get there early to meet me for a beer and a chat before the event kicked off so I could squeeze in another recording while in town. Thanks again, Jan! Although we’d not met before, I heard Jan’s Northern Irish accent and instantly felt right at home. Yes, I sound very American by now, but both of my parents are Northern Irish and I actually lived there for a few years as a child. It felt like Jan and I had an immediate connection and I couldn’t wait to sit down, chat and get to know her better. Here she is…
Today’s guest is Alix Shaw, Assistant Packaging Manager at The Five Points Brewing Company in Hackney, East London. Alix is also a co-founder of the Crafty Beer Girls, a community of beer loving ladies who work in the beer industry or just enjoy a good pint. In addition to monthly meet ups at pubs and bars in London, Crafty Beer Girls has an online community that’s grown to nearly 800 women worldwide, since its founding in 2015. I met Alix through Crafty Beer Girls and was so excited to get her on the podcast because her energy and enthusiasm for all things beer is infectious. Plus, her story of how she got to where she is in the beer world has lessons for us all. Alix and I talk about how she made her transition from wine to beer, and what she’s learned by saying yes to every opportunity that came her way… namely, discovering her passion for packaging. Alix tells what she loves most about her role as Assistant Packaging Manager, educates us on what can go wrong when beers aren’t properly packaged, and emphasizes the importance of building a tight-knit team. We reflect on her personal journey in beer, along with the growth of the Crafty Beer Girls and its impact on the London beer community over the years. We also talk about what Alix gets up to outside of the beer world, what picks her up after a down day or long shift, and what changes she’s hoping to bring to the beer industry to help create safer and fairer working environments for all. If you’ve never really paid attention to beer packaging before, prepare for that to change. If anyone can make you passionate about packaging, it’s Alix. Here she is…
Today’s guest is perhaps someone who could be described as the “hardest working person in London’s beer industry.” As well as heading up Marketing, Events & Comms for The Five Points Brewing Company in Hackney, East London, Doreen Joy Barber also co-runs the quarterly London Brewers Market, is an active member of all-female beer group, the Crafty Beer Girls and even finds the time to pull a few shifts behind the bar at The Chesham Arms, also in East London. What’s surprising is that back when she lived in her native Florida, apart from a little bar work, Doreen wasn’t an active part of the beer scene, even though it feels like she’s been working in beer all of her life. After taking a chance on applying to study a master’s in anthropology here in London, Doreen moved overseas, even writing her dissertation on CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. I asked Doreen to come on the podcast in part because of the way she kinda just “fell into beer” and became such an integral part of it. But also because of how some people describe the brewery she works for as, how Doreen puts it: “normcore” for concentrating on a tight core offering, instead of just throwing out an increasingly myriad selection of specials, like so many of their peers. If you’re ever in London, it’s very difficult not to bump into Doreen if you visit one of her many favourite pubs, of which there are just too many to mention. And in her own words, if there’s a drink in her hand, then she’s working.
