With the recent announcement of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods in the USA by President Trump, and the subsequent retaliatory tariffs on American goods in Canada by Prime Minster Trudeau, the craft beer industry is arguably the most aggressively affected. Thankfully they were paused for 30 days in early February, however, it felt right to do a deep dive into what they are, and what they mean for the industry. Shehan De Silva of Lost Craft, High Park and Local Spirits joined Cee (who is currently in Florida) to how the tariffs will affect key beer products including aluminium and hops, how it affects the supply chain, how it will affect the US and Canadian industries differently, they touched on the impact that Canada's high taxes have on the beer industry, trade barriers internally, large brewer monopolies, and how negative press continues to degrade an already suffering industry. Since this wasn't a planned pod, the beers weren't matched up but Shehan got into Lost Craft's Old School Pilsner and Espresso Stout, while Cee rocked Burial's Donut Skillet Stout and Other Half's BA Double Sunset - Cloud Cover Layo Terage stout. Beer and Balance: Strategies for Social, Mental, and Physical Wellbeing in the Craft Beer Industry

Craft Beer Professionals

You and your employees' social, mental and physical wellbeing matter. The craft beer industry is in a time of reckoning with an all-time record of people leaving their jobs, and employers struggling to fill vacant roles. 1 in 5 employees left a job at some point in their career because of its toxic organizational culture. By one estimate, employee turnover triggered by a toxic culture cost U.S. employers nearly $50 billion per year pre-pandemic. What makes a brewery's culture toxic is often the elevated levels of stress, burnout, mental health issues and pain experienced at work or as a result of their work. While these types of experiences are often common, they are not talked about by and among peers in craft beer. The consequences of the endured pain and silence lead to disengagement in many forms. Two leaders in craft beer share their honest stories of quitting - leaving toxic behaviours, routines, and craft brewery cultures and finding their way to a balanced way of life working inside and living outside of craft beer. Where their identities are more than what they drink or the brewery they work for. Dana Kaluzny (she/her) is a Facilitator, bringing people together for projects that matter and the Co-Owner and Founder of Endswell Beer, a small-batch brewery for people who love beer with people in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada. Tom Halaska has almost 30 years of Food & Beverage experience, and community has always been at the heart of his programming. Currently the National Sales Director for Ritual Zero Proof Spirits, Tom's focus is now on helping bar and restaurant owners to create a more inclusive beverage program for the modern drinker. Prior to his current role, as Global Brand Manager, Tom not only lifted WellBeing Brewing Company to the top of the Craft NA Beer category, but also helped create the national category itself. While Connecticut's craft beer industry has grown steadily over the last decade, the pandemic posed challenges to taprooms and wholesale retailers alike. Nearly half of the state's 125 breweries received federal relief funding, according to the Brewers Association. This hour, we hear from the Connecticut Brewers Guild about how staffing shortages, supply chain snags and price hikes are still a factor for the industry. WBUR recently reported a "carbon dioxide shortage is affecting Massachusetts craft production." Brewers Guild Executive Director Phil Pappas says the price of CO2, an integral ingredient in production and canning, has already gone up. He has concerns the shortage could affect Connecticut in the future. The Brewers Association's annual report found that, nationally, small and independent craft brewers had "rebounded" from the pandemic. While 12 breweries have closed in Connecticut since the start of the pandemic, 22 have opened. Plus, we hear about a new scholarship opportunity aimed at diversifying the Connecticut craft beer industry. New England Brewing Company's (NEBCO) Director of Marketing and Sales Jamal Robinson recently launched the NEBCO African American Brewers Scholarship. The goal was to finance one aspiring Black brewer annually, through Sacred Heart University's new 11-month brewing science certification program, they were able to support four young brewers. Robinson also organized this year's Change in the Air Beer Festival, the first Black-run beer festival in the state. Robinson says the Change in the Air Committee that has formed around the effort has submitted an application for non-profit status. Florida's Craft Beer Industry is (happily) no stranger to making great releases to support important causes. We are featuring two such beers from two North Florida breweries on this episode. First is Watchstander IPA from Jacksonville's Veterans United. This beer is brewed to support and raise awareness to The Fire Watch--a Florida organization created to end veteran suicide. We speak to president and brewmaster, Ron Gamble, about veteran suicide and the importance of Watchstander in bringing awareness to this crisis. After that, we speak to Bryan Burroughs, co-founder of Proof Brewing in Tallahassee. They are one of many breweries around the world making From San to Don--an imperial stout created by Pravda Brewery in Ukraine. We'll chat about their decision to make this beer and the importance of raising awareness to them. Listen in... This episode is for ALL you Craft BEER lovers out there. And yes, I am even talking to you Craft Beer haters! Taylor Reynolds and Ann Wohlstadter are two amazing women that are passionate about their place in the Craft Beer Industry. Both Taylor and Ann work at Savannah River Brewing Company (SRBC) which is one of Augusta's major breweries. Taylor, who works the front of the house (and occasionally helps out in the back) found her way at SRBC via a rather untraditional route; Beer Yoga. Ann, stirred her way into the back of the house as a badass assistant brewer and a Level 2 Cicerone (there are roughly 4,200 Certified Cicerones in the world. ONLY 120 ARE WOMEN). A pretty impressive accomplishment to say the least. If you want a peak behind the curtain that is the Craft Beer Industry, or perhaps want to know what life is like working in a brewery, this episode is for you!Follow  SRBC's Socials Below!IG: https://www.instagram.com/savannahriverbrew/FB: https://www.facebook.com/SavannahRiverBrewTaylor's IG: https://www.instagram.com/yogawithtaylor/Ann's BLOG: https://www.facebook.com/Adventures-of-a-Modern-Alewife-109973557409672Are you loving ForTheNation Podcast? This weeks guest is Matt Kump. He is a talented Graphic Designer serving the Craft Beer Industry in Vancouver BC. @itskumpy There are not many projects that can offer the pure creative freedom that comes with designing a Craft Beer label. Sure there are breweries that keep it a bit more mellow and systematic. But the majority just kick down the doors and create some awesome stuff to stand out on the shelf or flex some massive personality. In this episode, Matt shares with us 5 different craft beer label designs he created for Boombox brewing. Some with raised gloss features, some holographic, and some taking advantage of printing on a metallic label stock to create something incredible. There is a lot of great stuff in the audio of this but if you want to watch the video of this interview, it's on YouTube (link below) and you can see the labels as we talk about them. Matt is a tonne of fun to chat with and is putting a lot of great content out for you beer lovers.
