In the latest edition of 'The Valley Business Today,' host Janet Michael welcomed Shayla Rickard from the Frederick County Economic Development Authority (EDA). The conversation provided an in-depth look into two key programs— the Widget Cup and the Employer Expo— both aimed at workforce development in the Frederick County area. The Widget Cup is an annual competition where teams from various high schools in the area, including Winchester, Clarke County, and Frederick County, showcase their skills. With no prior knowledge of the tasks, students engage in a rigorous three-and-a-half-hour competition to design, build, and present a project to a panel of judges. This year's challenge involved building an outdoor storage cart for the Fremont Street Nursery in Winchester. Shayla highlighted the incredible talent and creativity of the students, noting, 'It's amazing to watch them develop literally right in front of me.' Clarke County continues to dominate the competition, winning the Widget Cup yet again this year. Janet remarked on the uniqueness of each team's project despite having similar guidelines, and Shayla praised the students' ingenuity. The event also serves as a real-world industry model, teaching students project management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The discussion then shifted to the upcoming Employer Expo, scheduled for May 15th at the Shenandoah University James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletic and Event Center. This annual event brings together around 70-80 employers from various industries, offering about 400 job opportunities to the local workforce. 'We're very helpful and we're very positive about filling up our employer's needs,' Shayla commented, stressing the event's importance in the current job market. For job seekers, the Expo offers on-the-spot interviews, workshops on resume building, and soft skills training. Attendees also have a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship by participating in on-site workshops. Shayla emphasized the broad range of job opportunities available, covering sectors from healthcare to IT: 'Every skill set in our area is covered.' Janet and Shayla also discussed the benefits of local employment over long commutes, noting the mental and financial toll of traveling to work outside the area. Shayla mentioned tools like a commuter calculator to help people evaluate the true cost of commuting, advocating for the viability of local jobs. Interested parties can find more details about the Widget Cup and Employer Expo on the Frederick County EDA website at yesfrederickva.com.

Dormy House is a unique business that's focused on creating affordable housing solutions for club and resort employees, especially those in rural and remote areas where inventory is low and people may be priced out of the market. The founder is a real estate developer and former caddie and it was his experience as a caddie, with lengthy commutes and limited housing options near the courses where he worked, that inspired him to find a solution for workforce housing. He works with the team at Bandon Dunes and has already developed two buildings onsite for its employees. Also on this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast … The Saddlebrook Resort in Pasco County, Fla., is set for a sweeping transformation, thanks to a $72.5 million loan secured by its developers, Mast Capital and Amzak Capital Management. The redevelopment plan will encompass a complete redesign of the resort's guestroom suites, lobby, meeting spaces, pool and outdoor areas, golf courses, and food and beverage facilities. Additional upgrades include significant enhancements to the resort's landscaping, sports facilities, and lifestyle amenities. Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock, Texas, is preparing for a new chapter in its nearly century-long history. Established in the 1930s, the course has been a cornerstone of the local golfing community. Now under the management of Orion Golf, Meadowbrook is set to receive comprehensive upgrades aimed at revitalizing its facilities and programs. The new management plans to enhance the course's playability, amenities, and overall accessibility for the Lubbock community. Improvements will include new kitchen equipment, an expanded food menu, clubhouse renovations, and the introduction of golf leagues and clinics. These upgrades are designed to create a consistent, high-quality experience that caters to a broad range of golfers and visitors. Lastly, Bobby Jones Links is now managing two well-known daily-fee golf courses in the Detroit, Mich. area, Sugarbush Golf Club and The Captain's Club Golf and Event Center. Operated by private ownership, sister courses Sugarbush and The Captain's Club have become popular community attractions in their respective enclaves within Michigan's Genesee County. Both courses have thriving junior golf programs and event calendars and have become beloved destinations for golfers, restaurant patrons and the community overall.

Our conversation for The Valley Business Today with Shayla Rickard, Business Retention Manager for Frederick County Economic Development Authority to discuss the upcoming Worlds of Work (WOW) Expo. This event, happening on October 11, 2024, at the Wilkins Athletic and Event Center at Shenandoah University, is an eighth-grade career exploration program. Originally for seventh graders, the event now targets eighth graders and hosts about 3,000 students from seven school divisions. Shayla explains the origins of WOW, modeled off a southern program, and highlights its purpose—to give students a hands-on look at various careers available in their area. The expo includes industries like agriculture, manufacturing, IT, and healthcare. With employers providing interactive activities, students get to experience a day-in-the-life scenario for different jobs. We discuss how the event allows local businesses and industries to showcase the diversity of roles within their fields. I share anecdotes from previous expos, demonstrating how the event helps students think beyond typical job descriptions. For instance, kids learn that radio stations need more than DJs—they require salespeople, engineers, and programmers. The conversation also touches on how the WOW Expo encourages students to consider different career paths and sparks new interests. Shayla mentions the robust Career and Technical Education (CTE) program in Frederick County, aiding students in making more informed decisions about their future careers. We also talk about the logistics of participating in the expo. Businesses interested in being exhibitors can register easily and no fee is involved. There is a hospitality suite and lunch provided for exhibitors. Shayla highlights the variety of participants they've had in the past, from large corporations to small local businesses, underlining that all sorts of industries are welcome to join.
