Myopia: Defend Your Childhood - A Nostalgic Movies Podcast

This week on Myopia Movies, we put on the mask, stare into the abyss, and then complain about the lighting. We dust off a paywall episode this week as we watch Watchmen—the most philosophical superhero movie ever made, or at least the one most likely to assign you homework afterward. Join us as we unpack a world where superheroes are less “save the day” and more “deeply complicate geopolitics.” We wrestle with questions like: Is Rorschach a moral absolutist… or just the world's angriest inkblot? How does Dr. Manhattan make omnipotence feel like a midlife crisis? And is Ozymandias the smartest man alive—or just really good at PowerPoint presentations with catastrophic consequences? We dive into Zack Snyder's ultra-stylized adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' legendary graphic novel, debating whether it captures the spirit of the original—or just lovingly recreates it in slow motion. Also: we try to determine if any superhero team has ever had worse workplace chemistry, and whether the giant blue nudist is actually the least weird part of this movie. Want to pick a movie we do an episode on and record a special commentary just for you? Purchase something from our wish list!  We are riffers on Cineprov! Check us out!! How will Watchmen hold up? Directed by: Zack Snyder Starring: Malin Åkerman as Laurie Jupiter / Silk Spectre II Patrick Wilson as Dan Dreiberg / Nite Owl II Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan Matthew Goode as Adrian Veidt / Ozymandias Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Edward Blake / The Comedian Carla Gugino as Sally Jupiter / Silk Spectre

This week on Myopia Movies, we finally gamble big on Bond—real Bond. We dust off a previously paywalled episode as we're talking high-stakes poker, parkour chases that feel like a personal insult to your hamstrings, and a version of 007 who bleeds, broods, and looks like he might actually lose a fistfight (before winning it anyway). Join us as we break down how Casino Royale rebooted the franchise with all the subtlety of a defibrillator. We ask the important questions: Is this the most emotionally vulnerable Bond, or just the most recently traumatized? How many people need to die over a card game before someone suggests Uno instead? And does anyone in the Bond universe understand what a normal vacation looks like? Featuring one of the greatest Bond villains to ever cry blood and a love story that hits harder than Bond's torture scene (yes, that one), this episode dives into what makes Casino Royale not just a great Bond film—but a genuinely great film, full stop. Also: we try to explain poker strategy with the confidence of men who absolutely should not be allowed near a casino. 2026 Show Notes Addendum: As we prepare what is slated to become our final ever installment of Nerd Noise Radio - Channel F, I felt it apropos - poetic, even, to make this month's rerun be of our very first ever installment.   As always, please keep in mind how much worse my production quality was all the way back in late 2017 than it is today (both in terms of tools and techniques), and give all that a little grace. A snapshot of a moment in time. However, as you'll see from the even earlier late 2016 rebroadcast included in this transmission, even with as bad as late 2017 production was, it was already much improved over where I had gotten my start about a year earlier. Now, please, enjoy this maiden voyage of our betas and bonuses outlet - including, not one, but BOTH of the two most important, transformative, meaningful, and cherished Christmas memories of my life!   -------------------------- original show notes -------------------------- Tales of the glories of Christmases long long ago.......and tales of the glories of an all-new Channel from the Nerd Noise Radio Network - plus a certain special "re-run" embedded at the end! Merry Christmas (etc), Noisers!!! p.s. First Appearance of the new Nerd Noise Radio logo and background design scheme for 2018. I hope you like it! It's purposely lo-fi, but hope that comes off in the good way, rather than the bad way. Also, as a fledgling (and I mean SUUUUUUPER fledgling) student of Japanese, I just couldn't resist. ;-)

Writer and cultural critic Phoebe Maltz Bovy joins Meghan to discuss her new book, The Last Straight Woman, an exploration of how heterosexual women became suspect — if not pitifully uncool — in progressive culture. They talk about everything from Tumblr-era feminism and the post-#MeToo recalibration of gender politics to the television series Sex and the City and Girls, "photogenic feminism," bachelorette parties at gay bars, late-in-life lesbians, hookup culture, and why admitting you're a "boring straight woman" may now qualify as a radical act. We also revisit the "lesbian chic" era of the 1990s (my personal heyday), the discourse around the viral New Yorker short story Cat Person, the appeal (and limits) of sexual fluidity narratives, and the cultural overlap between straight female culture and gay male sensibilities. Bonus: They switched gears in the last 15 minutes and did a Deep Dive™ into the subject of buying secondhand clothing from online marketplaces such as Poshmark. 2026 Show Notes Addendum:    To round out our second (and final) visit to the realm of backwards VGM (and very closely related non-VGM) on Nerd Noise Radio, let's replay the 2020 original series, which was also a two-parter, but instead of being two "equal billing" parts, it was a one part "episode proper" and then a supplemental Ch F "F-isode" bonus. In addition to being one of my all-time favorite projects to work on in show history, the series also marked an important turning point in show history as the first installment was our last ever NNR broadcast on the main feed to be produced in GarageBand on MacOS (except for the deliberate call-back that was C1E75 in 2023), and the F-isode was my first ever production in Audacity and Ardour in Linux (then Ubuntu Studio (KDE), now, Fedora (GNOME)). Original Show Notes below are largely faithful to the original with one MASSIVE exception: the tracklist is now populated with all the relevant track info, where it was originally withheld to keep the mystery and mystique alive.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original Show Notes (modified to show track names on 04/20/2026):   ------------------------------------------------------------------------   You are tuned to Nerd Noise Radio – Channel F. Today's “F-isode” is significant not only for being only the second F-isode we've had in over a year, when they used to be quite a bit more common, but is also significant for being the first ever production of Nerd Noise Radio of any type to be produced entirely on Linux. Historically, the show has been produced on Mac. With a small backlog of previously-produced, but not-yet-released music blocks that were, of course, produced on the Mac still in reserve for future episodes, it will be some time yet before the Mac presence fades from the show completely. But it is my hope to do the lion's share of future all-new production on Linux moving forward. So, the shift will be a glide, rather than a snap. But that shift starts...here.    Longtime listeners of the show will know full well what a Channel F F-isode is, but a pair of really beautiful things happened early this month which will have brought new attention to the show, from faces as near and dear as my fellow Des Moinesers (and surrounding communities), to as far-flung as Linux fans all the world over. For an explanation of what Channel F is, and how it relates to Nerd Noise Radio as a whole for the newcomers, as well as the details of who and what the new faces are, and how all that came about, see below. Also, for a descripton of how this F-isode relates to our April Fool's episode, “Backtracks”, see the blog....or just sit, back, relax, and enjoy, as you listen to.....”The OTHER 50”!     Timestamps provided, but track details withheld for now in case anyone wanted to play the guessing game on the tracks. A follow-up blog post on April 30th will provide the entire track list information for both Backtracks and for today's outing. The mini-article appears in the April Issue of the magazine which can be viewed online (Link below). In addition to that, Jason Evangelho, a tech-writer for Forbes Magazine who focuses on Linux very generously boosted my tweets about my first production in Linux, which went on to become the most liked and retweeted tweet in my history on the platform. I make it a point to look at “the numbers” as little as possible, so I don't know how many (if any) of the new faces stuck around. But certainly a number of them at least had a peek. If you are a new face, either brought to the show through the Cityview article, or through Jason's buff of my tweet, get a hold of me to let me know you're here!     Presuming we did have at least a few stick around, I should give an explanation of what Channel F is, relative to Channel 1, and Archive Super Bonuses, so you know how this show works. I will do so at length on the blogspot version of this episode, where the blog format is more accommodating of lengthiness. But I will give you a brief overview here:     Channel 1: This is “the show proper”. These are “the actual episodes”. On average, 10 fresh episodes a year (with reruns to fill in the blanks). Other than extraordinary circumstances, they follow a standard “enhanced mixtape” format: a short, semi-standard intro, and standard housekeeping outro bookending a winding, twisting journey through sound. We have had quite the spate of non-standard “Channel 1” Episodes of late though, so for the newcomers, I wanted to stress what “normal” looks like. We don't anticipate having anything else non-standard for several months moving forward.    Channel F: This is my side-outlet for bonuses, betas, extras. It can be virtually anything. And additional mixtape music block (like today), but has been all sorts of things. We even had one that was an exposition on a certain episode's outro. Anything that doesn't fit in Channel 1, but that I still want to have full attention (podcast feed, blog, social media, Archive.org, etc) becomes a Channel F “F-isode”.    Super Bonuses: These are for the times where I have something that I felt was worth producing, and felt was worth putting out there, but did not want to clog up the podcast feed, or the blog, or social media with. Generally, it takes the form of remixes and twists on existing content. Since they only come out on Archive, and not anywhere else, and since they're not really advertised, this creates a nice “underground” quality to them. I usually drop hints inside Episodes and F-isodes if there are any Super Bonuses planned. But beyond that, a person just needs to know to be on the lookout. They will release even less consistently than F-isodes, but will also tend to be in bursts around certain episodes that are rich for alternate twists on their content.    See the blogspot version of this episode if you'd like to know more about these. Link below. Meanwhile, our next all-new episode is planned for August, though I do have some really great reruns lined up for the months between. Even those will still constitute much more of a “return to normalcy” for the show than what our past several months of fresh content offers, so a great chance to “get to know us” I hope you will enjoy! We also have a secondary podcast feed which is dedicated entirely to reruns, which will feature reruns different than the ones on the main feed, if you wish to explore even more Nerd Noise Radio history. It can be found on your podcatcher of choice by the name “Nerd Noise Radio Reruns”.    Cheers!    Link to the Cityview Article:    http://dmcityview.com/CityviewApril2020/html5/index.html?page=1&noflash (page 50)    You can find previous articles by Jeff by searching www.dmcityview.com or as compiled on Muck Rack:    https://muckrack.com/jeff-pitts/articles    Link to Jason Evangelho's Forbes articles  (@killyourfm on Twitter)    https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/#18ee68a0d36f    Link to Blogspot version of today's “F-isode” (for the long version the Channels descriptions, etc.)    https://nerdnoiseradio.blogspot.com/2020/04/channel-f-backtracks-other-50.html

Original Show Notes below are largely faithful to the original with one MASSIVE exception: the tracklist is now populated with all the relevant track info, where it was originally withheld to keep the mystery and mystique alive. Lastly: in case anyone is wondering what on earth is happening in the outro: I figured since it would be backwards, and nobody would ever hear it forward unless they either took the initiative to reverse the file themselves, or else find the [quote] "UNBACKED" version on Archive.org, they'd never know what on earth was being said, I decided to forego the standard outro script, and just go nuts. I read a chocolate chip cookie recipe I found online on the spot, and included snippets from every previous episode blooper reel in show history to that point as well as various other sound clips, such as slow-mo vids of my kids, and fresh snippets provided by my brother-in-law Brian Peterson. Anyway, that's what's happening in the outro. I wanted it to be as preposterous and baffling and chaotic as possible!   ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Original Show Notes (modified to show track names on 04/20/2026):   ------------------------------------------------------------------------   Today's broadcast is C1E52 for Wayback Wednesday, April 1st, 2020. ABC DUMPS Women's College Basketball for RERUNS of American Idol

ABC was supposed to air the season premiere of The Bachelorette this Sunday night. Unfortunately for ABC...Taylor Frankie Paul was the bachelorette this season...and she is currently embroiled in a serious controversy. As a result...ABC decided to postpone airing the season premiere of The Bachelorette. This presented an opportunity for ABC...to broadcast the women's tournament in college basketball in primetime. Instead...ABC chose to air reruns of American Idol. We explain why ABC chose American Idol...over the women's tournament in college basketball. We highlight how this was a business decision...and why ABC needed programming that was similar to The Bachelorette audience. We also discuss the struggles in women's college basketball...and how most women's basketball teams are unprofitable. SUBSCRIBE TO BEHIND THE LINE - SHORTS: https://www.youtube.com/@btlshorts-84

In this episode of Culture of Change, Ashe in America and Abbey Blue Eyes dive into the idea of “reruns” in truth telling and why long-known information is resurfacing now with renewed traction. The conversation explores how narratives once buried or censored are re-emerging for new audiences, why repetition matters in awakening the public, and how understanding the deeper structure of government and power impacts every generation alive today. Ashe and Abbey discuss the concept of a hijacked saeculum, the meaning of the coming “Golden Age,” and differing perspectives on technology, AI, and the promise or danger of utopian thinking. The episode also breaks down cultural signals found in advertising, consumer behavior, and food systems, highlighting the importance of local sourcing, personal responsibility, and conscious choice. Throughout the discussion, the focus remains on truth, discernment, and taking back agency in a system designed to obscure it.

A hot afternoon in the mid '80s: you walk in, drop your stuff, switch on the TV, and there's that same Gilligan's Island episode you've already seen a bunch of times — and it still feels comforting. For Gen X, reruns weren't just background TV; they were part of our daily routine and taught us jokes, culture, and how to share a living room. Now, in a world of endless streaming choices, we're looking back at how those old repeats shaped us and what it means that they've mostly disappeared. (May contain some explicit language.) 2025 Show Notes addendum:   In light of the release of C1E100 (the final "non-retrospective" Ch 1), I thought it would also be good to release C2E20 (the final "non-retrospective" Ch 2) as a nice tie-in. Though my production quality has improved somewhat since late 2024, it is nowhere even remotely close to the quantum leap that is the difference between my Dec 2025 and my Jan 2017 production quality difference with C1E1. Channel 2 was a COMPLETELY different kind of show, though. Rather than being a vaguely NPR-esque mixtape-style program that was "less a podcast per se" and more "a late nite FM radio music program which just so happened to go out over the podosphere", Ch 2 was a "proper podcast" with a co-host out of Chicago and myself taking turns sharing tracks and talking about them. We wrapped the show at the end of 2024 because my co-host had been podcasting since 2009, and would be turning 50 in 2025, and so he decided at the end of 2023 that he would be retiring completely from podcasting at the end of 2024, and I didn't feel like replacing him, so we just wrapped it together. Anyway, since we referenced C2E20 and even featured a few tracks from it in C1E100, and since we're rerunning C1E1, I figured I'd rerun this too. By the way: that one upcoming Ch F one-off with Trey Johnson of NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio will be in this exact format - only, obviously, a different co-host.   Anyway....enjoy! Also, this rerun will release on Christmas Eve. So, Merry Christmas to anyone who celebrates it - and a belated Happy Hannukah to anyone who celebrates it instead (I celebrate both, myself!) :-D   ------------------------------------------------------   orig show notes   Today's Broadcast is C2E20, for Theme Thursday, Oct 24th, 2024. SEND US A MESSAGE! We'd Love to Chat With you and Hear your thoughts! We'll read them on the next episode. This is a rerun from last year's Christmas episode. Have we forgotten the peace of Christ that we share? Listen and spend time focusing on the Lord's goodness. There is true peace with Christ!----Peace is a major theme around the Christmas holiday. For the Christian, we know that Jesus is not only the reason for this season but He is our peace. What does it even mean to say, "Jesus is Our Peace". How then should we live based on this reality? How does it play into this sin-ridden world of egos, wokeness, justice seeking, idolatry, pain and immorality? Do we see peace through the proper lens?I pray that you are edified in this special Christmas episode as I walk through how peace is seen from Heaven's eyes. How it is truly available to us...and just how superior, hopeful, and violent it really is.Key Passages:Luke 2:8-14  (Luke 1:76-79)Job 38:2-7What is the Gospel - Voddie BauchamMusic|| Hypersonic Music - Last Resistance (Dan Thiessen) - Universal Production Music (i do not own the rights)Support the showHosts: Brandon and Daren Smith Learn of Brandon's Church Planting CallPatreon: www.patreon.com/blackandblurredPaypal: https://paypal.me/blackandblurredYouTube: Black and Blurred PodcastIG: @BlackandBlurredPodcastX: @Blurred_Podcast

2025 Show Notes addendum: With C1E100, you just heard how Ch 1 ends. Now, hear how Ch 1 began!   Also, C1E100 ends with a production deliberately designed to be as close to the much much MUCH worse production quality of the original episodes. With today's rerun, you can compare it to the C1E100 ending to see how well or how poorly 45yr old "2025 St. John" did at emulating and impersonating that clunky, and untrained, but "starry-eyed", "pocket full of dreams" 36yr old St. John from C1E1. I definitely want to know what you think at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com or on social media or Discord! Lastly, for as atrocious as the production quality is on this Dec 2016 production (Jan 2017 release), it is actually the [by far] superior version of the episode. In Oct 2016, I produced beta versions of the first four episodes, and shared them under the pseudonym of "Disco Santa's House of Impossible Conundrums" so I could put them out there for a very limited audience to solicit feedback without a mass release (this was before I was using cloud storage, mind you). The final releases of those four episodes were amended based on the feedback received from everyone from Mike Levy of XVGM, to Pieness64, to even Stephen Hill of NPR's decades-running New Age / Space / World / Ambient late-night FM radio program: Hearts of Space. Well, recently, I found the original beta versions of those first four episodes , and here is a Google Drive link to the episode 1 beta - the only NNR production to use an alternate version of the "St. John NNR shout". The version we ended up going with was recorded during the episode 2 beta and applied to everything thereafter. So this episode 1 beta is the only time in show history where an episode opens with an alternate St. John NNR shout - and boy is it pathetic! This one was recorded with me sitting down. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. NERD NOISE RERUNS: C1E60 - "Listener Picks - vol. 2" (orig released 12/23/2021)

2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the second installment, from December of 2021 And it is less of a sequel per se, and more of an omake (that is, more of an "outtakes" episode). While vol 1 was 40 tracks long and selected by 18 contributors, their total body of contributions was not 40, but instead, an absolutely insane 100!! Well, even in 2025, we'd never do an episode 100 tracks long! Such a mixtape could possibly hit 5hrs long, which is too long even for St. John! :-D  So, what I did instead in 2018 was take the 100 and narrow it down to 40, with the 60 track remainder kept in reserve, intended for a Channel F "F-isode" to immediately follow as a bonus and feature the remaining 60. This bonus was to feature Trey Johnson of the NintenDomain and W.A.R.T. Radio podcasts as co-host, and be in the original format of W.A.R.T. Radio as a "return the favor" tribute to Trey in return for W.A.R.T. changing formats to match the NNR format. It was also going to feature an interview with a composer, spearheaded by Trey. But schedules did not align, and so the F-isode never happened! Today's rerun, eventually released years later in 2021 as a numbered "official" Ch 1 episode is essentially what that F-isode would've been - only with no interview (scheduling conflicts). Trey would still go on to co-host with me, though. Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2021 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. If you are new, and this is your first exposure to NNR, and you enjoyed the content, but were put off by the production, either go back and listen to a recent episode, such as C1E98 or C1E96....or perhaps even better, keep your eyes peeled for C1E99, which is basically this all over again, but at 2025's far improved production quality standards! In fact, in this case, the situation is even worse! My side of the recording session with Trey was lost, and so we had to fallback on his side of the Zoom call for my voice, where I was using a super cheap wireless headset. So my voice quality sounds especially terrible. My apologies if any of that detracts from this otherwise excellent and joyous outing! And with that, please enjoy the very non-standard-formatted - Listener Picks - vol 2, thanks again to Trey for lending his voice and talents in joining me to make this one happen, and please keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 3rd (and final) installment! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes:   Today's Broadcast is C1E60, for Theme Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 - our final episode of our very non-standard two-year long “Season 4”. So it is fitting that we'd end such a wildly non-standard season - filled with primarily wildly non-standard content already - with such a dramatically non-standard Channel 1 episode. Today's episode abandons the customary Channel 1 “great big music block” mixtape format for a modified take on the original W.A.R.T. Radio format, featuring Trey Johnson of Nintendomain / W.A.R.T. Radio and St. John. Today's episode is also a “Lost Level”, as it was originally intended to be a Channel F bonus “F-isode” to supplement “C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol. 1” from December 2018, and was intended to release right after it, in a nearly identical presentation to what you receive today. As such, today's broadcast shall be “Listener Picks - vol. 2”. All music, other than the background music for the speaking portions was curated by listeners of the show, and are the roughly 60 remaining unused tracks from the pool of roughly 100 that were offered up for C1E40 in 2018, of which only 40 were used.    p.s. We apologize for the uncharacteristically poor audio quality on St. John's speaking voice. Details available upon request, but the short version is that John had technical difficulties on his end of the recording with "the good mic", but fortunately, we had a lower-quality backup recording on Trey's end over Zoom using St. John's built-in laptop mic. The sound quality is diminished, but the content is still preserved.     Note: All Speaking Portions originally produced in December 2021 by St. John     01: Intro     Timestamps: 00:00:00 - 00:05:18  Runtime: 05:18  Emceed by: Trey and St. John     02: Phillip Vaughn Music Block     Timestamps (Including Introduction): 00:05:18 - 2025 Rerun Notes: In anticipation of this month's incoming C1E99: "Listener Picks - vol 3", we are rerunning both previous installments of the Listener Picks trilogy this month!  Today's rerun is the inaugural installment, from all the way back in 2018. It features a semi-standard intro and outro, and a standard mixtape - with the exception of the fact that every track is selected by the listeners (40 tracks - 18 contributors) - and that the intro and outro are guest-curated by a collage of 11 of those same 18 contributors. It was also, at the time, the longest non-retrospective episode in show history - and featured a long, glorious outtakes reel at the end! C1E99 will share a great many of these same attributes! It will feature 70 tracks, collectively selected by 8 listeners (6 of which also contributed to today's rerun (and 3 of which were also featured in vol 2). At just under 3.5hrs, it will also be the longest mixtape in non-retrospective Ch 1 history (even if this new record nearly doubles the [then] record which the 2018 episode set). And it will also feature a semi-standard intro and outro, largely guest-hosted by a collage of the contributing listeners. In fact, unlike today's rerun, this time every single track contributor also contribute their voices to the intro and outro (except for the one which prizes anonimity and requested a text-to-speech be used in his place). And I also anticipate 99 to feature a fairly decent outtakes reel - though not quite as robust and spectacular as today's rerun. So, where vol 2 is less a "sequel" to vol 1 per se, and more of an "omake" (or an "outtakes") of vol 1, the upcoming vol 3 will be the true sequel to today's rerun. The long-awaited "echo". The "let's do this exact same thing one more time". In fact, due to a joint failure of double-checking from both St. John and the contributing listener, C1E99 will even feature one track that was featured in today's rerun. So be on the look out for that and see if you can spot which one it is before the reveal! And yes, it even was the same contributing listener in both episodes! D'oh! :-) Lastly, as always: all the usual caveats about how much worse my production quality was back in 2018 than it is today, and not to judge the current state of NNR production quality by this rerun. And with that, please enjoy the absolute block party that is C1E40 - Listener Picks - vol 1, and keep an eye out for the trilogy's incoming 2nd (rerun) and 3rd (fresh) installments! Cheers! Cheers! -------------------------------------------------------------- Original Show Notes: Today's broadcast is Episode 40 for Theme Thursday, December 20th, 2018. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway.    Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1  ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS:     http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss    Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! This is part two of the framework; if you missed part one, head to episode 175 and start there so you're all caught up.  In this episode of Experiencing Data, I continue my deep dive into the MIRRR UX Framework for designing trustworthy agentic AI applications. Building on Part 1's “Monitor” and “Interrupt,” I unpack the three R's: Redirect, Rerun, and Rollback—and share practical strategies for data product managers and leaders tasked with creating AI systems people will actually trust and use. I explain human-centered approaches to thinking about automation and how to handle unexpected outcomes in agentic AI applications without losing user confidence. I am hoping this control framework will help you get more value out of your data while simultaneously creating value for the human stakeholders, users, and customers. Highlights / Skip to: Introducing the MIRRR UX Framework (1:08) Designing for trust and user adoption plus perspectives you should be including when designing systems. (2:31) Monitor and interrupt controls let humans pause anything from a single AI task to the entire agent (3:17) Explaining “redirection” in the example context of use cases for claims adjusters working on insurance claims—so adjusters (users) can focus on important decisions. (4:35)  Rerun controls: lets humans redo an angentic task after unexpected results, preventing errors and building trust in early AI rollouts (11:12) Rerun vs. Redirect: what the difference is in the context of AI, using additional use cases from the insurance claim processing domain  (12:07) Empathy and user experience in AI adoption, and how the most useful insights come from directly observing users—not from analytics (18:28) Thinking about agentic AI as glue for existing applications and workflows, or as a worker  (27:35) Quotes from Today's Episode The value of AI isn't just about technical capability, it's based in large part on whether the end-users will actually trust and adopt it. If we don't design for trust from the start, even the most advanced AI can fail to deliver value." "In agentic AI, knowing when to automate is just as important as knowing what to automate. Smart product and design decisions mean sometimes holding back on full automation until the people, processes, and culture are ready for it." "Sometimes the most valuable thing you can do is slow down, create checkpoints, and give people a chance to course-correct before the work goes too far in the wrong direction."   "Reruns and rollbacks shouldn't be seen as failures, they're essential safety mechanisms that protect both the integrity of the work and the trust of the humans in the loop. They give people the confidence to keep using the system, even when mistakes happen." "You can't measure trust in an AI system by counting logins or tracking clicks. True adoption comes from understanding the people using it, listening to them, observing their workflows, and learning what really builds or breaks their confidence."   "You'll never learn the real reasons behind a team's choices by only looking at analytics, you have to actually talk to them and watch them work."   "Labels matter, what you call a button or an action can shape how people interpret and trust what will happen when they click it." Romanians vote for a new president after suspected Russian interference in 2024 poll. The nationalist presidential candidate, George Simion, a self described MAGA candidate, has said his only objective is “to put the Romanian people first”. Also in the programme: We explore the ongoing impact of President Bashar al-Assad's brutal repression tactics on ordinary Syrians; and we hear from International Booker prize nominee Solvaj Balle, alongside the translator who brought her work 'On The Calculation Of Volume' into the English literary canon.
