The bible does not specifically address these platforms. But it does address what they do, which is communicate thoughts, feelings, words, opinions. So is it ok to just post or text whatever you want? Being OK or legal can be very different than right. Especially if you look at it through a biblical lens. How about this, have you ever texted or posted something you wish you hadn’t or wish you could get it back? Better yet, have you said something you wish you hadn’t or wish you could get it back? How We Break The Connection With Our Wife

The Relaxed Male

If you would like to reclaim your bride and leave the mediocrity of roommate syndrome behind, then it is time to take the next step.Take The Next StepSo we have noticed that the lack of intentionality with our significant other has to change. To be able to change you have to know how you arrived in the circumstance you are in now. That is what we are going to be talking about this week. What actions did we take to break our connection?***Warning***Don't fall into the victim mindset here. You may want to say,"Well, she doesn't try either.""She started it""She is just cold""She never liked the marriage to start"or any other excuses. even if she said that to your face, your thoughts are what makes it true. So what was your part in this scenario? When you start being honest that you had a hand in your marriage's doldrums too, you start to see where your power is and you can fix it by changing yourself. Think of the law of reciprocity or the 100/0 principle. You are the leader of the house. Not the boss of the home but the leader and there is nuance as to how a good leader leads. So what did you do to send your loving sex-filled marriage into the frustrating mediocrity of roommate syndrome?Being a know-it-allHas your wife ever reminded you of something you need to do and you said, "I know"? Maybe you step all over her talking with your own thoughts and views? Many times when we are running on unintentional thoughts we will be Mr. Know-it-all. We are in a hurry to get our thoughts sent out before we forget them and we end up forgetting that we want to connect with our wife. So What do we do? Blurt out our thoughts and not show her the courtesy or respect that is needed for a good connected conversation. We don't have to expound all of our knowledge all at once. Our wife believes we can be awesome and smart. She is also awesome and smart so maybe hold back and if needed write the retort down so you can remember it.Try to fix itShe doesn't want you to fix the problem. She wants the opportunity to share her life with you. When she complains about the day she had she's not wanting sympathy as much as she is wanting to share her life. The problem many of us men have is that we take our wife's retelling and make it mean something worse. That she is suffering she's in pain. She is not having a pleasant time and that it reflects badly upon us. Many of us men also have a tendency to become anxious, worried, scared, angry, or some other fear-based emotion That we want to avoid.so instead of listening and connecting with her wife, we want to rush in with our toolbelt and get our wife to be happier instantly. Life doesn't work that way how many times has our wife tried to get us to smile and cheer up and it doesn't work? The same thing goes for her. When we try to fix the problem often, our wife thinks that we don't care about what her day was about. We want to hurry the conversation along so that we don't have to connect with our wives. That is the very opposite of what we want. We want to connect with our wife. We want to have a wonderful relationship with our wife. We know that we have to have a good emotional connection with our wife, but we also don't wanna feel bad. Therefore, we toss all of the work we're doing out the window.Have your phone out at supperWe gripe at our teenagers for having the phone out at times. We really want to connect. These phones that we have today are these wondrous little machines that give us feel-good emotional bumps every second of the day.The big problem though is that when we don't have our phones in our hands, the amount of serotonin and dopamine levels drop which tells our brain that we are bored. Our brain does not like to be bored. It likes that stimulation that it gets from that little rectangular slab of plastic glass and metal. so often when we are being unintentional in our life that phone magically appears in our hand. So what are you do?How do you keep from having that phone out at supper? That's work right there. You have to get over your thoughts of what boredom actually means. To your wife, the phone being out means the same thing as the phone being out to the kids. She interprets you reading your email looking up some piece of trivia or what as you're not interested in her. The same goes around for your wife if she has the phone and you want to talk. You know how that feels so you have to start intentionally paying attention to what your hands are doing while you're waiting for a refill of the bread basket. You can start turning the phone off when you go to eat. You can also take the phone and set it face down on a different table to signify that you don't have the phone. And then start asking questions. Talk to your wife. Don't fix as before, but have deep conversations by asking questions.PornWhen it comes to marriage, we're supposed to have sex on a regular basis. Well, that's what we like to tell ourselves. Yet often as the years go on and kids come onto the scene lovemaking gets relegated to the back of the closet.we get told through the years of all the times our wife has a headache all the times her wife is too cold all the times her wife is too hot all the times she is angry at us all the times that she is got other things on her mind. All the times that she is just flat out not in the mood all those times we get told no add up.Eventually, we start looking at porn. Eventually, we will fall into a victim mindset around porn well I just wanna see someone have sex. I wanna know someone's at least doing it and we use that as an easy to get some type of sexual gratification. However, porn causes major disconnection to our marriage. it's easier to go to a porn site on the Internet than to have a connection with your wife. It's easier to look at fake women that it is to talk to the real woman who is in the bedroom down the hall. You'll hear people say that porn can be addicting. I won't say that, but it is a very easy habit to fall into because of the reward cycles that happen. You can get away from using porn. And you don't have to be ashamed of it. You can step away from the dirty movies. But again you have to have thoughts about how you're going to handle porn and how you're going to improve the sex life between you and your wife.Playing the victimIf you know anything about this site, you know, I am not for the victim. Playing the victim, aren't you no respect? It causes more suffering than it benefits and makes the victim look like an all-around loser. If you want to have a connection with your wife, pointing the blame that you're unhappy at her is going to fix the problem pointing the blame that you're unhappy to anybody else is not going to fix the problem. The only person who can fix the problem is the one who is complaining. Your wife wants a hero, not the victim loser who whines about how everything is not fair.To fix the problem you have to own up to your own shortcomings. You have to own your dirt. This is scary to a natural victim but becomes very empowering as you exercise your anti-victim mindset.Your wife will start seeing you hold your head a little higher as you take responsibility for your actions. You start taking responsibility for where you are in life. And you start changing your trajectory. Not believing what she saysConnection is built on a foundation of trust. And it is very tough to have trust when someone keeps telling you you're wrong. When the person who's supposed to have your back, doesn't believe what you're saying there's not gonna be much connection going on. When your wife is telling you something that happened in her day, interrupting her isn't going to fix the problem if she is talking about something that she sees from her eyes that you're doing telling her she's wrong doesn't help your case.A big part to remember is that she's going off of how she perceives what's going on. The same as your world is based upon how you perceive the world so instead of telling her she doesn't know what she's talking about when she says you never take the trash out, get curious this is when you really need to be curious in the heat of a of an argument ask the questions and start trying to see the world from her eyes.Doing that practicing the four pillars of effective communication actually allow for greater connection and a greater understanding of your wife for those times when she is seeing her world in a particular fashion.Being apatheticMany times in our marriage we won't have the same interest as what our spouse has. There isn't any enthusiasm and we could honestly care less about what Cynthia in sales is doing with her life. Yet to express that apathy to your wife is the same as just pulling out your phone at the dinner table. You have to show her you are interested. You have to show curiosity and how her day went. You can do this by asking questions actively listening also helps, but showing how apathetic you are severs connections, faster than a hot razor blade through butter. Letting date night slideIt's Friday night it's date night. But you really are not kind of feeling good about going out tonight. Rather just kinda stay home and just loaf instead of getting dressed up and taking the wife out. Or maybe kiddos been sick and then the wife got sick and so there's been two or three weeks of no date night. We'll do it next week now that is the crack of roommate syndrome starting.Be intentional with your date nights. Yes, they're gonna be times you're not in the mood to go out yet go out. It's the small investments in your relationship that pay out in spades.Do those little things that don't seem to matter. We're married. I don't need to date my wife anymore. That's where you're wrong. You need to date your wife even more after you're married than when y'all were single and dating.Being vagueMarriage is about the connection. And those connections require specificity. So being vague transmits a lack of interest and also a bit of secrecy. Are you hiding something from your wife? What is it?Women tend to bend to the worst possible outcome. When they start worrying, they get out of control at times. If they don't feel they can trust you they're going to pull away that pulling away is going to disconnect you from each other.Go into details when you're talking about today. This is what your wife wants to hear. When she wants you to open up, she wants you to open up with your day. She doesn't necessarily mean your emotions. She wants to know the details of your day. Stop being vague about what happened at work and start throwing those details at her.Manipulate her emotionsThis one is for the nice guys. I get it you are scared of your emotions. Whether you want to admit it or not, your wife's emotions are just as scary as your own. But let her have her emotions. You have your own and yes, they are not very comfortable at times. However, if you want a good connection with your wife, you have to let her experience her on emotions. When she's mad at you being OK with her being mad at you doesn't mean that the marriage is over. Just means that she is not happy with an action word that you said.We have to stop trying to manipulate our wife because her emotions matter to her she may not like them and she's gonna do things that cause her to avoid her own emotions, but let her cope with her emotions and you cope with yours.Don't talkWhen relationships really start to crumble, and roommates syndrome has got its claws dug deeply into a relationship. The big indicator is when you aren't talking with each other anymore. This lack of talking can stem from too many fights the avoidance of fighting the manipulation of each other‘s emotions The lack of communication is a desperate sign because both sides are pulling away and there is hope that the relationship can get better but it's going to take effort lots of intentional effort on your part. Being OK with trying something and failing and having to step back and Try again. Not intentionally spending time with each otherMany times us getting together requires that you actually have to schedule time. Sounds weird sounds so unromantic but yet when y'all were dating, you scheduled date night. He scheduled other parts of your life. So scheduling reconnection time is also critically important for you and your wife. This can also go for scheduling sex. Now, many people cringe at that thinking that sex should be this spontaneous event that erupts yet ask yourself why has the sex died down? 90% of the time it's because other things have come up y'all gotten busy you hadn't connected. Life happens.Being in emotional childhoodWe talk about people being reactionary and being somebody who reacts to circumstances and an emotional way and often runs around, believing that emotions just happened to them. They believe that emotions just float through the air and you somehow just run face-first into them. This is emotional childhood. When you think emotions just happen to you without any cause. You are unbearably just a victim of your own emotions. When you are in emotional childhood, that's what you're thinking. Emotions don't just happen to you. Emotions require thought to happen before you can feel any type of emotion. When you comprehend the fact that your emotions come from you you enter an emotional adult and you are able to understand why you feel happy sad or whatever. When you are in an emotional childhood though you want to think that your wife makes you happy or your wife makes you sad. If your wife is in emotional childhood, she thinks you're supposed to make her happy and that is impossible. You have no power to make your wife happy, you can show her Waze that you love her and she then has the choice to believe that thought you shared or rejected out of hand. This is why so many marriages fail these days they think their spouse is supposed to make them happy yet their spouse isn't even happy if they can't figure out how to make themselves happy how are they supposed to make you happy?Overly criticalDogging on your wife, your wife's friends or anybody else who is close to your spouse is a good way of breaking up a connection. Because if you're critical of those around her, how critical are you of her? You both are supposed to know everything about each other so if you're critical about your wife's friend, that's probably going to tell you that she's been having thoughts that you're overly critical of her.Being critical of other people causes them to close off from you. Why do they want to open up to somebody who's just going to be very critical of what they think of what the hell they act of what they do? Using her as your therapistAnother way, you separate the emotional connection you want from your wife is by using her as your therapist. No, you're not supposed to use your wife as an emotional dumping ground. That's one thing a lot of counselors get wrong. That you're supposed to open up emotionally to your wife. You're supposed to tell her all your fears and your concerns and the times that you're anxious and everything else that's farthest from the truth. Women want to know about your day they want the details of your day. They want to know how your day went in gritty minutia. The more they see you caring, you show them that you want to include them in your day. They don't want emotional vomit thrown upon them. When you are dumping all your emotional baggage upon your wife, you're not helping build a connection you're tiring her out she's supposed to be able to come to you to dump her emotional baggage. You're the man you're strong enough to handle it. you're also supposed to have other men around you so that they can help you with that load your band of Brothers your community is where you do your emotional unloading and the other man in your group will help you do that in a healthy manner not just stand around going well I feel really anxious today doesn't help you become a better husband for your wife telling her how scared you are of every little thing around you And how your dad was not caring of you doesn't help her. See you as a better man. Talk to your band Brothers about the emotional stuff. Take your wife's emotional baggage from her and share it with your men. They will bring positive masculine energy to you to be able to share with your wife and kids.

On the 48th episode of the What is a Good Life? podcast, I am delighted to introduce Dr. Brennan Jacoby as our guest. Brennan is a Philosopher and the Founder of Philosophy At Work, a collective of philosophers and business psychologists teaching professionals the skills they need to think their best.In this episode, we explore making space for meaning in our lives without forcing it. We delve into various tensions, from wanting to make the most of life to vegging out, accepting ourselves without lowering our standards, and balancing the time spent building a career with the need to invest in personal relationships.Additionally, we discuss the limitations of various philosophies when taken to their fullest interpretation, the importance of realising the subjective nature of our experiences, and the necessity of reflection to understand what we are projecting onto life. Throughout the conversation, we emphasise the profound significance of caring, noticing, and orienting towards a better life. For some reason, I found this conversation very cathartic. Brennan possesses a wonderful capacity to engage in a genuine conversation and an exploration while referencing philosophical concepts and sharing grounded, relatable personal examples. If you are anything like me, this episode will make you feel more comfortable with being human and navigating the tensions and experiences inherent in the pursuit of your own good life.Subscribe for weekly episodes, every Tuesday, and check out my YouTube channel (link below) for clips and shorts.Contact me at mark@whatisagood.life to book a free consultation (30 minutes) for one-on-one coaching programs or to hear about corporate workshops I am offering around this question.Running Order: 02:22 How should I live?05:39 Making sense of our distractions09:13 Making space for meaning15:06 You can't force meaning19:16 A good life is everything in it23:56 Letting go of fixed states and answers28:16 There may not be a “right” answer but it can be “better”32:04 Living with care and noticing39:36 Being OK with everything46:00 Navigating our imperfection52:01 Acceptance without lowering the bar57:46 What is a good life for Brennan? For further content and information check out the following:- For the podcast's YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/@whatisagoodlife/videos- My newsletter: https://www.whatisagood.life/- My LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mccartney-14b0161b4/- Brennan's website: https://philosophyatwork.co.uk/- Brennan's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-brennan-jacoby-51807790/

What would it be like to have the courage - the bravery - to question everything and go for your big dream, even if it seems out-of-reach or “too late”? Today on the podcast, Julia brings on one of her dearest friends and soul sisters, Evanne Barcenas, lead singer & songwriter behind the band Effie Zilch. Julia and Evanne met 14 years ago, on their first day starting at Google (on the same team). The two formed an instant bond and connection and over the years, though challenges and questioning and their divergent paths, they have always inspired and supported each other to shine their lights and follow their purposes.  Today, Julia and Evanne talk: Being OK allowing all the versions of yourself to co-exist and be expressed in different ways How Evanne balances her roles as mom, wife, country clubber & touring musician! Understanding the gift of knowing what you love How to muster up the courage to follow your passion Why age truly doesn't matter and you can follow your dream at any time Falling out of the comparison game trap, especially on social media What it took for Evanne to finally jump off the cliff to pursue her dream to become a touring musician at 40 How to turn the “dreaming” into DOING to realize your purpose and find true alignment in your life If you're looking for inspiration and motivation to start being authentically YOU, this is one conversation you will not want to miss! I love what Brooke Monaghan has to say about entrepreneurship: "...this is what I always have to break down for people. Listen to anyone who has anything to say about entrepreneurship, and what they're going to tell you is, if you can figure out a way that people in your community are not being served, innovate some solution for them. That is the foundation for creating a business. So when I talk to people who are part of a community, and really care about some weird little niche thing, and they see all of the problems - here are all the ways that we are not being served - here are all the ways that we are being overlooked. Here are all the ways that we're being left behind. And they have some idea about how they can make that better. That is literally the thing that everyone like me who really wanted to be in business needed, but didn't feel like they had a thing. That's the thing that we have all been searching for. Please, please do something with it. Because that's it, that's the foundation for a sustainable business, you create a better way." Brooke is an inspired coach who leads people through the process of being rule followers to becoming game changers - people who challenge the status quo and make entirely new realities possible. Here are some of the things we talk about: ** Owning what you do. ** Commitment vs. hustle. ** The appeal of being seen as you are. ** Being OK with the struggle. Brooke's podcast, Transcend Your Dichotomy, is an abundant resource of information and inspiration for anyone who is ready to turn a great idea into a great reality. She wanted to make something that showed people what it was like to be in the experience of creating a business instead of reporting about a business after it had become successful. And she found that much of her conversation was on the topic of mindset. Find Brooke and all her resources at https://brooke-monaghan.com She's on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/briggsmonaghan/ On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brooke-monaghan/ She also just announced that she's starting a YouTube channel called The Aligned Business Portal. This will be an amazing source of information for people who are looking for ways to promote their offers in a way that's aligned with who they are. If you are new to Buddhism, there are plenty of things in Buddhism that make you question if it is real or not. But they are clearly part of the religion. And, different traditions may have various beliefs. So, do you need to believe in everything "Buddhism" believes in? This is one of the most asked questions and concerns for Westerners coming into Buddhism. As I'll talk about in this episode, it's OK to not believe in everything right away, but please be respectful. We don't always understand everything (and often how they help you understand Buddhist concepts and develop!), and that's OK! Being OK with not knowing and understanding everything right away can be challenging, but an important part of engaging with the religion. Welcome to the Dontbeacrumbqueen podcast.  My name is Sher and I'm your host.In this episode, I'm going to talk about “Being Alone and Being OK”.  There are several reasons why we find ourselves alone.  For some, it's a choice and for others it's where they've currently found themselves.  No matter the reason, being alone is actually not a bad thing.  It can be a Blessing in disguise.  If you have just experienced the break-up of a relationship or a divorce, being alone may be a difficult adjustment but I hope you choose to see it as an opportunity for growth and not a prison sentence.

Hello friends! Welcome to this week's episode of the Remarkable People Podcast, The Dr. Fred Moss story!  This week Dr. Moss is going to be bombarded with questions from me. I think I asked more questions to Dr Fred on-air and off, than I have in any episode to date.  He's a psychiatrist, a communicator, an author, and a coach, but he doesn't believe in pharmaceuticals. And even though he's treated tens of thousands of patients throughout his career with pharmaceuticals, he saw pharmaceuticals were not helping, but what did help people was listening authentically to bring joy and healing to the world. So check out this remarkable episode about understanding humanity, the mind, and the importance of communication to really love and bring joy into one another's lives, the Dr. Fred Moss Story! GUEST BIO: Dr Fred Moss arrived on Earth on March 1,1958, and from that very second has been earmarked to be a healer. The family he was born into was in chaos and in many ways, was counting on his arrival to bring health and wellness back into balance. Little Freddy had his hands full, and over the next 6 decades, has made it his business to bring healing to the world around him, not only to his family and friends but to the community and world at large. What a journey it has been. Above all else, Dr. Fred has been committed to the notion that communication, connection, creativity, and conversation are at the heart of all healing of all conditions of all types. Without this, people simply do not heal. With it, miracles regularly occur. Voices heal. Listening heals. EPISODE PROUDLY SPONSORED BY: Hanging Out with David Pasqualone & Friends Podcast SHOW NOTES, GUEST CONTACT INFO, SPECIAL OFFERS, & OTHER RESOURCES MENTIONED:Guest Contact Info:Website: https://Welcometohumanity.net/podcast Podcast: Welcome to HumanityGuest Special Offer(s):Free PDF of Creative 8: Healing Through Self Expression and Creativity (CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD), and a Free Discovery Call (Value $500)Resources Mentioned: Welcometohumanity.net/creativewelcometohumanity.net/creative8findyourtruevoicebook.com HOW TO SUPPORT THE REMARKABLE PEOPLE PODCAST:Subscribe, Rate, & Review  us on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite Podcast PlayerShare the podcast or specific episodes with your family, friends, and co-workersSponsor an Episode or Donate what you can financially to help us continue to bring great content that inspires you and people like you around the world! HAVE A QUESTION?Click Here to Connect with David THE NOT-SO-FINE-PRINT DISCLAIMER: While we are very thankful for all of our guests, please understand that we do not necessarily hold, or endorse the same beliefs, views, and positions that they may have. Welcome to the Living Limitless Podcast. Where we talk about fitness, motivation, and mindset. These are real conversations about people who have lived through the struggle to become successful. And now, here's your host, Clint Riggin. Rise and shine guys. It is another beautiful morning over here in Tampa, Florida. We have episode 109 coming at you — Being OK with Being Different. So, I watched the entrepreneur recovery clip from last week where Mike Claudio was a guest and he spoke about how being different is ok. Now, if you want access to this training you're going to have to go ahead and take that next step in joining Apex. That's where you're going to be surrounded by top-producing, high-achieving individuals. So, his personality type is 1/100th of the world and he has always been different in some sort of way. Mike has built multiple successful companies and coaches others in their business life for thirty hours a week because he f*cking loves it. I thought about being different and now understand what that truly means. You know, since I started this journey with Limitless Coaching, people have said, “Hey Clint, you're different.” Damn right I am because I don't want to be like most of the average population. I've learned that for you to truly accomplish what you put in front of you, that being different is something that must be done. You start to realize other peoples' opinions don't truly matter. You have a goal? Whatever it might be? Then fucking go for it. Keep going no matter what people say. The one thing that will separate you from the rest is your never-ending obsession to give up. Guys, if this uplifts you, inspires you, and motivates you, all I ask is you share this with your friends, family, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, all over the place — because we want to make this the number one inspiration podcast every single morning you listen to it. Guys, have an amazing day and LIVE LIMITLESS!

We've been making some massively big decisions in our life over the past few years, and we've developed a rhythm to making them and vetting whether they feel right. Whether it's a decision to move, start a business, sell a home, or any other big life decision, we run them through a three-step process to make sure it's the right move for us. The first question we ask ourselves before making a decision is this: will this decision give me extreme energy? Is it so aligned with your goals that, even when things get messy, it is still going to provide you with energy? When you're making a decision, you tend to focus on the energy you're feeling in the moment, not the long term energy that's going to come – or leave – based on that decision. The second question to ask yourself is: are you OK with the worst possible outcome of that decision? You don't have to feel good about that happening. You surely don't want it to happen. But would you be OK if it happened? It's a hard question to answer, but it is crucial if you want to move forward without regret. And third: do you have a support system to help you through the decision? This doesn't mean you have to know the exact people that are going to be there for you, but you have to know that they are out there and that you can find them. If you know that you have the support system in place for this decision, you need to move forward, knowing you can tap into it. Imagine how that decision would play out, all the way to the end. If you are happy with the outcome then move forward. If you've answered these three questions, then there's nothing stopping you from changing directions if things don't end up the way you expected, but at least you won't be paralyzed by the fear of deciding in the first place.

Today we're delighted to have the host of the anxiety coaches podcast. Gina is the producer of the top 50 mental health show on Apple Podcasts, and is a nutritionist and coach. She struggled with stress, anxiety, and panic for over 20 years, but was able to climb out of her fear and panic to peace, calm, and well-being by finding out what worked for her. We discuss what anxiety is, where it comes from, and why you might struggle with it. Finding the right therapist can be difficult, Gina suggests meeting with a therapist 2 or 3 times, having a conversation with them, and then making your own assessment as to how you should move forward. Practicing mindfulness is an important part of managing your anxiety by just having a non judgmental view of thoughts and just letting them be. Being OK with noticing it and acknowledging those thoughts, but not letting them define us. We also talk about how to handle someone else's anxiety and not make it worse. "All my life I've been trying to figure out….when there's no blueprint”  - - Dr.Nino Rodriguez, Social Justice Educator, Activist, Community Organizer, Transformational Coach    The Conversation: How Do I Heal Myself When I Don't Know Where to Start?    When we get a scar, there's usually something we can get to fix it: Band-Aid, cast, or a call to the doctor.    But how do you heal your life?    In this raw and revealing podcast, Ken talks with Dr. Nino Rodriguez, a social justice educator, researcher, and community activist talk about this very important and life-altering question.     They'll discuss how they learned to create a blueprint for healing when there was no blueprint, the struggles they had along the way, and some easy steps you can take to begin answering the question “How do I heal my own life?”, no matter where you are in your life's journey right now.    Insights  Figuring out your life in a complex world  Finding your life's work and your life mission  Navigating masculinity in a socially unequal world  The danger of not following your own blueprint for success  Milestones & benchmarks...and how to figure out a life without a map  Being vulnerable & emotionally intelligent  The important role of self-love in communication  Dealing with anger  Being OK while you're still learning to be OK….Why you don't need to be perfect to heal  Finding your life's calling  “Shit's gonna happen: Using the right coping mechanism when life throws something unexpected  Being angry with ourselves  Black Men Heal and The Confess Project    Takeaways of the Conversation  Healing is not easy. It can be complicated, so let go of the “quick fix” idea    You don't need permission or validation to be who you are. Chasing someone else's idea of who you should be is an “invisible prison”.    How you love is how you communicate Understand how people around you (including you) express love and you will be able to communicate better    The Homework:   Dr. Nino talked about a lot of things in this conversation, from race to masculinity to social justice and communication.     One of his biggest themes, however, was healing.     He emphasized the point that healing is about understanding what you are healing from, what you are healing for, and what you are healing toward.    So, for this homework, take a moment to think about your own healing    All you need is 15 minutes, some inspirational music    1. (5 minutes)  Healing From Be sure to be in a safe space (mentally, emotionally, and physically) first. Then pull out a piece of paper or type on a blank page in a word processor. Write down (no filter) the answer to what question “What went wrong in my life?” Limit yourself to 5 minutes    2.. (5 minutes) Healing For  After you did the above, walk away from what you wrote (at least 30 minutes or more, if you need it)….then come back This time, turn on inspirational musi while you write a list of all of the people in your life who care about you...and that you care for. Limit yourself to 5 minutes and include yourself at the top of the list.    3. (5 minutes) Healing Toward  Continue to listen to inspirational music. This time, start imagining that your life was better. Write down what that life looks like (no filter).    Once you're done with the above exercises, put two things on the calendar:  (1) Gratitude  Find one way to show gratitude to a person you care about  (2) Self-Care  Plan at least an hour where you can step our of your daily grind and just relax. It could be on a staycation, just playing music with no agenda, reading, a book, or actual vacation  (3) Self-Build Plan at least another hour in your calendar where you dream...then take action on a part of that dream.. It could be as simple as researching a course you always wanted to take or speaking to someone in a new career field. It could also be starting an exercise routine that you never got around to.    Once you're done this week, see if these exercises helped change your life in any way    About Our Guest:  Dr. Nino Rodriguez is a social justice educator, Chief Impact Officer of Excellence and Advancement Foundation, program director of the MUST (Mentoring Urban Students & Teens), community activist, speaker, and coach.    You can find him at www.r3volutionino.com    Social Media Channels  Instagram    Twitter    LinkedIn     #HealBlackManHeal    Other Resources to Check Out  Manhood in the Making: Cultural Concepts of Masculinity    Soul the Movie on Disney +    Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot    The Confess Project

Today we delve DEEP into a topic that we don't often discuss on the show... Relationships. We've got internationally acclaimed and award-winning network marketer, author, podcaster and speaker, Scott Aaron on the show! But today we're not talking network marketing, we're talking how to create healthy, thriving relationships, how to be resilient through the curve balls that life throws at you an how sometimes, you have to "slow down before you speed up".This guy's story is absolutely fascinating. From being married and divorced (twice), to filing for personal bankruptcy, it's a wild ride. But what is most amazing is how Scott has been able to "flow like water" through it all.We dig into ALL of the following:- His experience being married and divorced (twice). And now recently engaged again. And why after going through all of this, he STILL believes in marriage- His journey of growing up living his fathers dream, eventually filing for personal bankruptcy, before finding his own purpose and living life "on his own terms"- Why it is important to look out for your own needs in a relationship in creating an even partnership- What healthy communication in a relationship looks like- The importance of “speaking your truth” in a committed relationship (as opposed to supressing our true feelings)- Why it is important to GIVE SPACE in relationships- The shift in perspective from going into a relationship NEEDING to being in a place of ABUNDANCE- The power of spending time single, focusing on things that make YOU happy and BEING OK just being with yourself- Experience in running the family business (fitness facilities), turning it into a 6-figure business to being 1.5 million in personal debt (before turning 30)- Why sometimes you have to SLOW DOWN before you speed up- How we ALL go through "personal pandemics" in our lives and are challenged to pivot- How he became a leader in the world of network marketing- The importance of always having a backup plan in our careers - Why it is important to (in the words of Bruce Lee) “flow like water”- How to not live in fear of the future or anxiety of the past but to live in PEACE in the NOW- Why we need to stop thinking of success as this thing that is not tangible or attainable and how the stories that we tell ourselves reinforce this limiting belief- Why our failures open the doors to our successes and the power of taking on a solution oriented mindset To connect with Scott:Website: www.scottaaron.netPodcast: "Network Marketing Made Simple" (available wherever you get your podcasts)Book: The LinkedIn Book for Network MarketingBYOB AgencyInstagramFacebookLinkedIn

Title Episode Summary Today's episode is an interview with my lovely long-time friend, Jeff Chang. Jeff left the corporate world to start his own business, designing golf apparel like nothing I've ever seen - golf hats, accessories and clothing that truly really stand out. And I LOVE it!!! Today we are going to be talking all about Jeff's business, how he got to where he is today and where his inspiration comes from. Episode Takeaways: How one hat - THE HAT - changed Jeff's business forever, and furthermore underscored his company values How to TRULY stand out in a saturated market What it's like to go up against big players like Nike and major brands as a small business What to do when an opportunity so big comes your way - something that you may have only considered in your dreams When you take risks in business, as long as they align back to our personal values, you can't go far wrong.  Why we can't be all things to all people - and why that's a-ok! How to be okay with taking risks and failing, an essential part of learning and growing.  Rejection sucks, but the important thing is to not give up.  Selling is carrying on asking and asking... until someone says yes. And people WILL. “Maybe” is the worst answer you can get. Really! The art of flexibility. Why it's better to be less committed to allow for space to react in your business, than come up with a huge master plan and it not work out. On starting your own business and why it's KEY to center it around something you're truly passionate about. Why no effort ever goes unnoticed and how you never know how your deep efforts are going to come back to you in ways you couldn't have imagined. If you create enough momentum every single day, good things will follow... true story! How and why you need to constantly be in front of people every single day. Finally, it is important to stop and recognize how far you have come so far. All the steps you have taken and work you have put in, has got you to where you are today. Remember… How one hat changed an entire business model. What is your "hat"? What fuels you? Jeff and I emphasize the importance of creating your side hustle, and growing it. By continuing to do the work and keep showing up, it WILL eventually pay off. And we also want you to know how "maybe" could be just about the worst answer you could get... To actually make a decision you have to put skin in the game, say no to things and schedule your calendar so that it’s aligned with your dreams. Lately I've been fierce about making sure that I have room in my calendar for all of my new projects. And I am so proud of myself because, looking back at last year, I had a calendar full of things that I didn't necessarily want to do. I was more reacting to life than actually taking time to think if it was something that would move the needle forward. I was doing things because I didn't want to say no and hurt people's feelings. But you have to say no to things in order to create space for your dreams. I hope today’s quickie serves as a reminder or way for you to be able to get back to the heart-centered reason of WHY you’re working on your dreams. Earn Your Happy is a production of Crate Media

Are you a dreamer with an urge to make that dream a reality for the good of all? Are you a social entrepreneur struggling to get started? That's what this week's episode is about: People working for social good, with a mission and their aim is all about trying to make the world better. Sounds grandiose? Martyn shows us that it doesn't have to be, and explains the top struggles of world changers. If you didn't listen to the first episode with Martyn, you might want to do so: it's here. "World changers" is going to be a way of making a much bigger impact by empowering leaders. On changing the world, the danger of perfection, taking care of the gold goose, having a dream, and acting on it... In this episode, you will learn about: * What is a world changer? * Being a little bit better everyday, consistently, that builds up in something quite meaningful after all, but without all the pressure and grandiosity.* "A world changer is [ anyone ] working for social good. Their mission and their aim is all about trying to make the world better." [2:07] * Perfectionism is often what stops most people from starting: "When we want to do it so perfectly, that is definitely when we get paralyzed by the fear."[4:00]* The balance between supporting change on an individual level AND on a broader social level, and scaling our impact! [6:14] The top struggles of World changers: time, energy, money. * Being OK with earning money while working on social causes. [13:47]* Finding work / life balance when you self-entrepreneur and especially when you're passion driven, and working doesn't feel like working. [16:39]* The importance of taking care of yourself first: you're the golden goose. [19:23] * How to navigate the urge to save the world! You need passion and purpose, AND processes: keeping in mind our priorities can be difficult when you're a world changer, as everything is important and urgent. [20:33]* If I am going to found a social enterprise, should I found an NGO or a "for-profit" company? Money — or should I say, money-mindset — is definitely one of the biggest struggles of world changers! [23:04]* Martyn's number one advice for world changers: blocking the noise that is claiming your attention and is not supporting your goals, so you find calm and concentrate on what is important. Clarity, impact, and freedom will come naturally from that state. [28:02]* The process of creating the 6 weeks course "How to change the world", and what it is about. [29:37] Who is Martyn Sibley My guest today is just a regular guy... who happens to have a disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This means he cannot walk, lift anything heavier than a book or shower himself.AND... he is a living proof of "everything is possible", which happens to be the tittle of his book. He co founded and runs his company Disability Horizons, has a Degree in Economics & a Masters in Marketing, has presented for the BBC. He is also a blogger, and a speaker to bring awareness on disability. He drives his own adapted car, and loves adventure travels; he has flown a plane, enjoyed skiing & SCUBA diving, flying in a balloon, and he's been on the moon. (OK, not on the moon yet; but I'm sure that by the next time he comes here, that will be done.) In 2018, he started a project for empowering "world changers". He now offers also a 6 weeks online course helping you getting started on this journey, helping you gaining clarity, impact, and freedom.

Health Begins With Mom Podcast | For The Woman Who Is Done Surviving And Is Ready To Thrive As A Woman, Wife And A Mother

The Mother-Daughter relationship is the backbone of my health coaching practice because I believe that this cross-generational relationship affects all of us in very subtle and not so subtle ways. Whether it is your relationship with your mother or your relationship with your daughter. The common ground is you. In my coaching calls with women, who are themselves mothers I hear an ache. I hear a voice that is sometimes extremely difficult for them to express since it is a taboo to speak badly or badmouth your mom. After all, this is the person who has given me life, how can I say something bad about her?? When I work with clients I walk them through a process called "healing the mother wound" which is basically healing, getting over, being at peace with or breaking free from any pain (physical or emotional) which was inflicted on you or perceived by you, by your mom. Now, I want to be clear here. This is not about hating or stopping getting advice from your mom! Absolutely not! My mom and I are super close, I can't imagine my life without her. What I am suggesting is to be OK with thinking differently than her. Being OK with doing life differently than her, choosing a different path for yourself and writing a different story with a different ending for yourself and your own daughter, if you are raising a girl. A few years ago I struggled immensely with my own mother-wound. I love my mom so much but didn't agree with how she does things (whether in her marriage with my dad, with regards to parenting and especially with regards to career choices or life's work). I remember myself as a little girl, constantly correcting and telling her that she is wrong. I have always been a talkative and an opinionated girl (I guess you can say I was a coach in the making) and that led me through a very dark hole of fearing that I will end up like my mom. All this personal growth work that I do doesn't mean anything because at the end of the day I am conditioned to be just like her. I have always been irritated by her thinking small, fear and lack of confidence. That's how I perceived it through my limited lense. I constantly found myself literally "parenting" my own mom. Constantly fixing, correcting and teaching her how to do life. It was so inappropriate and also disrespectful. It became even worse as I became a mom myself, I was judgmental of how she looked after my kids, or how she raised us, felt like it's her fault and she screwed me up. Long story short, it was nasty and a huge waste of my energy! Bless my mom and her wisdom, she never gave me pushbacks, she merely allowed me to have my tantrum, be done with it and come back to her newer, wiser and with a new perspective. This process had allowed me to connect with my own life's purpose which I know now is to serve mothers and help them heal so that they can do the work that they are destined to do in a way that feels sustainable and nourishing to them. I raise mothers, that is my life's purpose. Instead, I felt like I had to raise, fix, or parent my own mom. I guess that was a part of the process. The salvation came to me after I've hired a coach who has taught me that it is not my job to parent my mom. That I have to learn to let go of forcing her to be who she's not. Stop judging her, stop correcting her actions, stop expecting her to show in a way she can't, stop feeling like I'm smarter than her. And instead, trust. Trust that as a woman she also has her own inner wisdom and guidance system that is leading her through her life. We are all different, and even if she's my mom, it doesn't mean I have to be, think, act or choose like her. This is called separating or individuating from your mom, and that is a necessary step in becoming a healthy adult. I talk a lot about the process of adulting on this podcast, and I believe that in order to safely transition into adulthood, we must first heal our childhood wounds and love cracks. This doesn't mean that we blame our parents, but instead we take full responsibility for our own lives, trust that we have got the right mom and dad for our unique soul purpose, and as we become parents ourselves we allow ourselves to stand free from their influence, while staying connected with them on a completely different level. After doing my own work around healing my mother wound, my conversations with my mom have become much more vulnerable and much deeper. For the first time in my life, I see myself as a woman sitting next to her, not as her little girl or daughter. I allow myself to approach her with curiosity and compassion instead of judgment and resentment. I fully accept her fully as a human being, woman and yes, my birth mother. She has given me so much, and I am who I am thanks to her, but from here onwards I'm on my own, and I don't have to live my life like she did. That is ok. In my coaching calls with women, I hear fear, judgment and tabooing around cultural norms such as raising your kids in a certain way or feeling really bad about putting yourself at the sidelines while putting everyone else in your household ahead of your own needs. I hear women fearing to voice themselves fully, expressing their inner fears that many times whisper to them NOT THIS. I don't want to be like my mom, I don't want to approach my health, life, marriage, parenting, life, work, friendships or anything else like my mom. I have my way. is that ok? So I am here to give you a huge hug and whisper in your ear YES! It is OK! You are not your mom. You are a different person, you are your own unique version of you. You are allowed to design your life the way you want to. You are the creator of your life and I want to give you the permission to individuate and separate from being "the daughter", from feeling like you are stuck under your mom's wings because the only person who's keeping you there is you. You are the one who's buying the story that you have to be just like your mom. If your mom did not model self-care for you, then allow yourself to be the one holding the baton for generations to come. This is especially important if you are raising daughters. Choose yourself first always, communicate to her that you matter, that you are a person too and that you deserve to eat a full, warm meal and not only your her scraps. I can't tell you how many times, in my coaching calls, as we work on balancing hormones, all women eat is their kids' scraps, forget to drink water and even sometimes suppress their urge to pee so much that over time they lose the attunement to the body. By doing this you are not getting more done, believe me, I've been there too. Instead, you are burning yourself out, putting more burden on your adrenal glands and are not living in alignment with your human design as a female and woman. Think about the message we communicate to our kids. Think about what you, as a little girl, picked up from your own mom. Is this how she plowed through life? Look at your mom and ask yourself, is she healthy? Is she happy? Is she joyful? Is she thriving? Is she living up to her potential human potential? These questions are important. Here's why. Have you ever found yourself confused about which career path to choose? Or where to focus your gifts and talents? If yes, surely you've had someone recommend you to try working at a company that makes the product or offers the service that you want to offer too. This is important because you will see how they work, and how far you can go up the rank and it is imperative to ask yourself do I want to be like my boss? Do I want to end up like him/her? Because if I stay here, that is where I'm heading. This is the same with regards to our health and wellness. Our moms are like these "bosses". Your mom, in most cases, is your first example of womanhood, motherhood, and wifehood. Without noticing, you've been learning from her your entire life, registering in your brain imprints and making notes like "when I'm at this situation, this is what to do". And many women do exactly that. But what if your soul feels like all of this social and cultural conditioning is wrong? What if you've tried to be like your mom and as a result got sick? What if your mom, without noticing too, was just repeating what she has seen when she was a little girl? This is your chance to break the generational pattern and learn how to respond to your female body in the way it was designed. With grace, compassion, nourishment, understanding, and reverence. This is important because you are no longer a child. You are a mom now. If all you eat is their scraps and protein bars, you scream in your kids' face that you don't matter. That eating well is not a priority for you. That the body is like sewage, and you can basically throw in it anything and everything. That is not true. Your body is a temple and you have only one body. so you must learn to love it, nourish it, care for it and have respect for it. It is your best friend. Forever. So many women live from the chin up, completely disconnected from their bodies. This leads to all sorts of ailments such as fibroids, hormonal imbalances, cancers, aches and pains, and much much more. For the most part, this pain and suffering is unnecessary and could be easily avoided. So today's message is that I am giving you the permission to take care of yourself differently. To care for yourself like you've never experienced or learned before. You are allowed to have help around the house. You are allowed to leave the kids and have a nourishing evening out with your girlfriends. You are allowed to travel alone. You are allowed to skip PTA's, volunteering in their school if that is in conflict with your schedule. You are allowed to cut back on their activities. You are allowed to have quiet in the morning to center to wake up without chaos, crying and everyone's needs pulling at you. YOU ARE ALLOWED! I am giving you this permission. If you find it extremely hard to separate or individuate from your mother-line or the script that has been written for the women and girls in your life, try writing a letter to your mom that you will never send. This is very healing and cathartic and will help you to express yourself, and say that which you never dared to say. I dare you to try this. Now I would love to hear from you! Reach out to me and let me know what are the cultural and societal norms you feel are not in alignment with, and what are you going to do about it? I'd love to hear from you, you can send me an email dorit@healthbeginswithmom.com, or find me on FB, I go under Dorit Palvanov.  Thank you for tuning in! I'm sending you much love and healing, until next time. Dorit

Blunt Dissection: The best minds in veterinary medicine, academia & business profiled so you can learn from their experience.

On today’s show, we welcome Dr Gerardo Poli, author of the minivet guide, Emergency Veterinarian and Director at Animal Emergency Service, a business with four hospitals based in Queensland, Australia. He completed his Vet Degree at the University of Queensland, Australia in 2008 - graduating with first class honours. He was awarded the Australian Veterinary Association Student Award and Gerardo was also selected as valedictorian of his year. Following graduation, he spent almost three years in a busy small animal general practice finding his feet but in 2010 discovered his passion in the high octane field of emergency and critical care. Gerardo achieved his Membership with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the field of Emergency and Critical Care in 2012. Completing his decade-long education binge with his Masters of Veterinary Studies through Murdoch University two years later in 2014. When he straps on his Superman outfit at work, Gerardo gets most excited about snatching critically ill patients back from the jaws of death, especially when it involves ultrasound and radiology, surgery and CPR. But his talents do not end in the emergency room and many of you will know him as the author of the best selling MiniVetGuide, a diagnostic decision-making book which has sold more than 10,000 copies and is beloved of student and new graduate vets worldwide. All of which seems like a very long way of saying he’s a bit of a rock star. In this conversation we discussed: 1. Resilience and building esteem 2. Being OK with overwhelm 3. How to transfer skills (particularly challenging clinical ones) to the next generation of vets. 4. Principles vs protocols in medicine. 5. Why capability is a double-edged sword. 6. How he creates space for his team to grow. 7. And why he believes you have to invest in your people. Gerardo may move fast at work, but he is something of a deep thinker which made his insights during our conversation even more valuable. I hope you enjoy and learn as much from this conversation as I did. And without further fanfare, sit back and enjoy my conversation with the fantastic, Dr Gerardo Poli.

In this episode, I go a bit deeper talking about why having an OK romantic relationship is NOT OK. If are at a point where you're thinking you deserve better, you are absolutely right. You do! BUT this doesn't mean it is time to start searching for another lover. It just means you haven't figured out how to love each other in a way that will fulfill both your needs. Here are some bits from this episode and why you need to work to make your relationship better than OK which, is really saying it is mediocre: You deserving better in a relationship doesn't mean finding someone else. Being OK will not leave you feeling like the relationship is fulfilling nor will it build a great relationship legacy. OK leads to relationship drift and sitting around with others bitching about your spouse So...really, if you are not happy with where it is, you have to ask yourself...What can you do to figure out how to get you reconnected and out of having just an OK relationship? Listen into this one and you'll get some clues!

National Center for Women & Information Technology

Audio File:  Download MP3Transcript: An Interview with Sandy Jen Co-founder and CTO, Meebo Date: January 16, 2012 [Intro music] Lucy Sanders: Hi. This is Lucy Sanders, the CEO of the National Center for Women and Information Technology, or NCWIT, and with me is Larry Nelson from w3w3.com. Larry, hi. Larry Nelson: Hi. I'm so happy to be here. This is a great series. It has a tremendous impact on young women, parents, bosses, and we're very excited. Lucy: We're not going to disappoint listeners. We're going to have a great interview today with Sandy Jen, who's the co-founder and CTO, that's chief technology officer of Meebo. Meebo is a great company and we have interviewed somebody from there before, Eileen Wherry. We had just a great time talking with her so we needed to go back around and catch up with Sandy. Here's this great tag line that I've heard used with Meebo. It's "together is better." That's a great tag line because Meebo integrates all social networks and communication channels into a very simple single solution so that it makes all those different channels a whole lot easier to use. I was poking around on Tech Crunch, Larry, and found out that-- probably these numbers have gotten even higher since I did it in November-- you have 250 million Unique's a month. Wow! That's astonishing growth. Here's some other stats: now delivering 5.4 billion page views a month, up from 2.8 billion a year ago. Larry: That's a "B"? Lucy: A "B". Larry: Wow! Sandy Jen: That's a "B". [laughs] Lucy: That's a "B". Sandy leads engineering as the CTO, of course, and builds the team responsible for all these great products and solutions, organizing the technology and the innovation and thinking very creatively about how you scale Meebo's architecture. Welcome Sandy, we're really happy to have you here. Sandy: Really great to be here and thank you for calling. Lucy: So why don't you tell us a little bit, other than those astonishing growth statistics, what else is going on at Meebo? Sandy: Let's see. We launched in 2005 so we're about six years old, which I guess is a pretty long time for a startup. We still consider ourselves a startup even though we're roughly 200 people now. We started with three, so it's also been a big growth in terms of just the number of heads we have on staff. Our goal, from day one we started out as a web instant messaging client and we wanted to connect people with other people that were important to them. Back in 2005 a really cool way to do that was chatting and instant messaging. We think as the web got a lot more big and a lot more complex and people are a lot more savvy now on how they use the web. Their expectations are a lot higher on how they connect with people and generally just consume content. So now what we're doing at Meebo, six years later, is connecting people with other people, but also people with content that's important to them. It's been an interesting journey for us. We started out as a web IM client, like I said, and now we're this distributed social bar. You mentioned our growth, which we're really proud of. The growth is now primarily due to this bar that I mentioned. We're on over 8,000 sites around the Internet that you see today and we reach about half the US Internet population, which is pretty cool as well. It's a really cool technology platform to play with to bring great consumer products and experiences to everybody that can touch the bar and see the bar. That goes beyond IM. So, we're experimenting with a bunch of ideas and how to really create a cool user experience using our distribution. Just to give you guys a little bit of a teaser we expect them to come out relatively quickly, in the next month or so. So keep an eye out. Larry: Oh good. We will. Lucy: Early in 2012. We love asking questions about entrepreneurship, as everybody who listens to these now, and we're about ready to get started with that. But I wanted to read a quote from Sandy from a recent entrepreneurship panel, because I think it's going to set up how great an interview this is going to be. "You may not feel as if you are qualified or confident enough. The biggest insight in this entrepreneurial journey of mine was when I realized that someone I knew, who was not super smart,"- I love this- "who failed the same tests I did had started a company, and I realized I could do it too." I loved it. I just love that quote, so I had to start with that. So, off we go. Sandy, we love talking to technologists, and especially CTOs. Share with us how you first got into technology and you've already told us a bit about cool technologies, but any other crystal ball you've got, technologies, on the horizon? We'd love to hear them. Sandy: I was lucky enough to grow up in a household where both my parents were engineers. It wasn't like a foreign thing growing up to be surrounded by engineering concepts like computers and physics and things like that. Getting started, I started pretty early in high school. Again, I was lucky enough to go to a high school that had actually four years of computer science classes offered. Lucy: That is amazing. Sandy: Yeah. [laughs] I started programming as a freshman in high school. Obviously, it wasn't the only thing that I did. I really enjoyed art as well, and English and a bunch of other topics. After I finished high school I was lucky enough to get into Stanford, they offered a couple of choices in Integral Computer Science classes. The first of which was if you've programmed before you could take an accelerated course and squish two quarters into one. Or you could take the two- quarter class that that would introduce you to the concept. So, I was like, "Well, I've done the programming, I'll go and take the accelerated course." Little did I know that those you take that course have the reputation of just doing computer science throughout their career. So, I took that course and here we are today. [laughter] Lucy: Here you are. Sandy: Exactly. I think that he quote that you mentioned was a really, really important one for me, where, going from a suburb high school to a big university like Stanford, one of the thing that's really eye-opening is that there are a lot of smart people in this world, and when you first meet a lot of these smart people, you're like wow, I don't know if I'm really that smart. When you go through your classes, and you may have gotten straight As in high school, but you may have gotten some Bs and Cs in college, it's a little bit of a hmm, like how good am I, right? I think for a lot of women in particular, that question tends to be maybe not explicit, but it does run strongly in the actions and the behaviors that they exude. For me, the biggest light bulb moment, like you said, was seeing someone who I thought, quote, was "as dumb" as I was do something extraordinary, and that was very inspiring. In my logical computer science brain, I was like, there's not a lot of difference between me and him, what made him do that? I think that was the biggest insight for me. So fast-forward six years now, when I talk to young entrepreneurs, a lot of them are like, "Oh, I have this great idea, I want to do this thing, I need to get the time, I need to do the business plan, I need to get the technology in place," and they keep putting up these road blocks. These are self-imposed road blocks. The difference today in terms of technology is that it's so easy to get started, like you have all these Cloud services that are really free and really cheap, you have all these resources available. You could get something launched, a mobile app, in like a week. That is extraordinarily powerful for a young, very ambitious entrepreneur who has an idea. In terms of crystal ball stuff, it's really hard for me to say, but the web is where everything is going, and whether that be mobile web apps or, websites that you get transferred to mobile, like all the things that people are doing these days, there's no concept of sort of a download or an application or even something that you sort of have to buy and pay for, there's all these services and online Cloud things. All those things are very, very interesting, and they're very powerful, and they're so easy to set up that I feel like that's where you'll see a lot of young people innovate, because it's so easy. That's really exciting for me. Larry: Boy. Lucy: It is really exciting. I can remember, I asked for my first promotion at work when somebody who I thought was a stupid... [laughter] Lucy: I really appreciate that. Larry: Yeah. Well, there you have parents that are engineers going through high school and enjoying a lot of different topics; why are you an entrepreneur? Maybe the second part is, what about entrepreneurship that makes you tick? Sandy: I want to go back a little bit. I went to an entrepreneurial organization at Yale called YEI, and I spoke with some of their students there, and one of them said, the interesting thing that I've found was that a lot of young people, especially young women, do entrepreneurial-type things, but they don't self-identify as an entrepreneur. They do things like, "Oh, I started a social club," or, "I started this meetup," or, "I gathered all these really cool people and they got to talk to each other, and now we do this on a regular basis," or, " Hey, I've started this event-planning thing that gets like all these really young people together." Those types of actions are actually very entrepreneurial. I would identify them as entrepreneurs, but they don't, and so they don't seek out help to take the next step. For me, I fell into entrepreneurship. I had the opportunity and I was like, "Wow. This is a really big risk." I'm generally more risk averse, and then I'm thinking, "Why the hell not?" Putting roadblocks in front of yourself like, "Oh. I'm not smart enough." "Oh, I need to do this." Or, "Oh. I didn't go to business school." Or, "Oh. I didn't do X, Y, Z." There's always excuses. I think that once I actually identified myself as an entrepreneur, and I took off with that, the most important thing that helped make me to continue to tick is that self confidence. It's the ability to think, "Oh, wow. I can really do this, and I can learn from this, and I can be respected for this, and the fact that I did this." Even if I have a team around me, the fact that you put yourself out there and were willing to take the risk to do that is amazing. Even today, six years later after we launched, I'm sometimes like, "Wow. Holy crap. I'm an entrepreneur." Or, "Oh my God. I'm the CTO." Because when you take a step back, it's like, "Wow. I was able to take a risk." Or, "I was able to put myself out there more than I would have before, and it really paid off." Even if the payoff is in monetary terms or the success of the company, the fact I overcame this self doubt, and, "Oh my God. I'm so stupid," or, "Oh. I'm not good enough." That in itself is very rewarding on a day to day basis. I think that's the thing that really makes me tick. Lucy: That's pretty interesting. The things we tell ourselves, right? I know. We had a person who we interviewed a couple of months ago, who said, her piece of advice was, I hope I get this right, "Never compare yourself on the inside to what you see on the outside of others." It's the way you feel. It's all about that same thing. Along the way, your career path so far, you've obviously had people influence you. Maybe your parents, the people at your high school. I'm still blown away by four years of computer science, by the way. Who are your role models now? The types of people who have influenced you. Any thoughts on that? Sandy: I was asked the same question at a panel a few weeks ago. My first answer was there's probably two types of people. The first, obviously, would be my parents. My mom was actually an engineer. A funny story, she actually helped me with my computer science classes in college when I had a bug. That's cool. People were like, "Wow. Your mom did that?" I'm like, "Yeah. Totally." Then, facetiously, but I really did mean it were, I called them my stupid goofy friends. Those friends are the one that I mentioned who, also sucked at physics like I did, and also failed that particular test like I did, and had trouble with that problem just like I did. They started companies, and they did it at a time when there was no money going around and the VCs were very wary of startups, given what had happened in the boom. They got funded, and they started a company. They worked really hard, and persevered, and were able to create a company that got somewhere. Them telling me that of course you can do it, like why wouldn't you do that? Or, hey, when I was feeling depressed or really unhappy with my job, because I was thinking, I'm coming out of school and I'm really happy about what I did in school, but now I'm in the working world, and I don't know what I want to do, they're like, "You should just pick something that you're passionate about and actually just go for it." Like there's no reason why you can't. Inspiration comes in many forms, and I think for me personally, the strongest was just the support to say yes, you can do it, and belief in me even when I didn't believe in myself. I think that's extremely important, I think, for anybody to have that kind of support network, because you can be successful and you can be rich, have all sorts of accomplishments in the world, but it's really lonely to celebrate them by yourself. Like to have someone else or a team or friends to celebrate with, and had said, "Oh," you know, "I believed in you from day one, and look what happened," is so much more valuable to me than anything else, so... Larry: All right, now, with all these wonderful things that you've been through, what is the toughest thing that you've experienced in your career? Sandy: Oh, man. [laughs] I probably would say hiring. When you start a company and you get all this money, people actually expect you to do something with it. [laughter] Larry: Yeah. Lucy: That's true. Sandy: You can't just have the money in the bank and be like oh, I got funded, and now it's just sitting there all nice and pretty. You have to build a team, and you're like OK, I'm 20, when I started, maybe I was like, you know, 23, and, you know, you're a 23-year-old who was a sophomore engineer for two and a half years, you've never managed anybody, you've never hired anybody, you've barely interviewed anybody at your old company, and now you have to build a top-notch tech team to support a product that you kind of hobbled together in your spare time and got funded for, and now they're giving you millions of dollars to go and make it big. You're like holy crap, what am I supposed to do with this? The toughest thing was actually figuring out how to hire, how to evaluate people, how to build a culture for the first 12 people in the company, and also getting over the fact that you're interviewing people who have been in the industry for 20 more years than you have, and they're expected to report to you, because you're the founder and you're the boss. So getting over that was huge and very challenging. I think, as you move more towards your career, like it's six years later at Meebo and I've interviewed hundreds of people now, sometimes there's still that little part of you that when you meet someone with a lot more industry experience, you're like, how do I really make you respect me? Because I may not come off as being like the big hotshot, you know, CTO kind of person. That's probably been the toughest, because evaluating other people is actually really, really hard. Lucy: Yeah. That was a very interesting answer. I don't believe we've gotten that answer to this question before. But I think it's very interesting. A plug for an organization we work, Women 2.0...writing a book on certain things like this. Like, hiring or interviewing. I chose the question, "How do you let somebody go?" Larry: Yeah. Lucy: I figured no one would answer that one. [laughter] Lucy: I figured nobody would. But I did it, I wrote it. If you were sitting here giving advice to a young person about entrepreneurship, in addition to some of the advice that we've filtered out of this interview so far around, "Don't make artificial excuses, have confidence in yourself," what are the kinds of things you would say to them? Sandy: One is, to be confident in your own idea. A lot of people have this notion that they have this really cool idea and they're like, "It's really neat, I should really act on it." Then they start to protect it. They baby it, they hide it, they keep it secret, they don't tell anybody. They hide it in the closet and they try to work on it on their own. It seems counter-intuitive but one piece of advice I would give people with ideas, with wanting to start something, is to share the idea as much as you can. Get it out there and get feedback because if you work in a vacuum you're not going to understand how to adapt quickly. I guarantee you, and I've said this many, many times to people, if you have an idea, idea's are never formed in a vacuum, and 20 other people have the same idea and they're already working on it. So, everybody has a different take on an idea, they have a different slant, they have a different perspective, they work on it in a very different way. But the more the idea is out there and the more you can iterate on it the better the idea gets. The more attuned to your audience it can be, whether that be, like I said, an ice-cream store, to a consumer Internet web company, having people give you honest feedback is so critical to creating a really big part. When I tell this to people, they're like, "Really?" I'm like, "Yes. Absolutely. Don't hide the idea." It seems really weird but it's a really good piece of advice that we got early on that helped immensely. Lucy: That's interesting too. Even if you have a good idea and you hide it. You get out there and as soon as you put it out there someone with more money, they're going to do it too, they're going to copy you. Sandy: People are always afraid of people copying them. I'm like, "It's OK." One of the early lessons we had was, if you make five or six changes to your UI, let's say I change the button shape or I move the position of a particular radio button or something like that, there were reasons why I did that. The reasons were for a number of user issues or feedback or A/B tests that we did. So, we moved the button over there. But if someone else went straight ahead and copied those pixels they don't understand why we moved that button. So, they don't get the learnings of why we did that. Without the deeper understandings of the decisions that you make a straight copy can work for a certain period of time but it won't work ultimately. That's the counterargument I give to people who say, "Oh, people will copy me." I say, "Well, generally it's the shallow copy, it's not really deep copy." Larry : Based on all the other things you've said during this interview it should be obvious, but from your perspective what characteristics do you think have given you the advantage of being an entrepreneur? Sandy: Hardworking. You can have as much influence and networking and friends in high places as you can, but if you don't work hard you can't really get there. Also, I didn't have this in the beginning but I think it developed a lot, would be self-confidence, but a sense of humbleness, in a way. Being OK with your decisions and not regretting the decision that you make. But at the same time being open to learning from mistakes, learning from other people who have different opinions and put that into your own system of beliefs. But being able to take a step back and evaluate that from a very non-judgmental perspective is important as well. It's a really long answer but, basically, always listening and asking the right questions, sometimes can be much more powerful than knowing all the answers. Having that perspective as you go from venture to venture or interview to interview is really important. A lot of people that I meet, who I have issues with just working with, like, some entrepreneurs can come off really cocky. I think that's to their detriment, because they may be really smart and really brilliant but if they don't take a step back and think about, "How am I perceived by others? How can I better myself to make other people want to work with me and share knowledge?" I think they're missing that. For me, I've really, really focused on doing that well. That goes into not being just an entrepreneur but as a good manager, as a good leader of the company. I don't have to have all the answers. But as long as I can ask the right questions and get the right issues surfaced, that is extremely effective. Lucy: Really important. This thing around listening and sometimes I say it's around, even, intuitive listening, because when you're listening really well you actually hear things that people didn't say but actually imply. Larry: Yeah. Between the lines. Lucy: Between the lines. There's a lot of value and there's a lot of mischief between the lines. You mentioned, Sandy, about hardworking. Of course, then we all have things we like to do outside of work, I'll put quotes on that. You mentioned your friends and people to celebrate things with. How do you strike that balance there? Sandy: It's really important. In the beginning of Meebo, I was like, "Work, work, work. Work is awesome, Meebo is great." All I would do is work, work, work. Then at a certain point you're like, "Wow, I'm really tired." [laughter] Sandy: The tiredness may not actually come from the lack of enthusiasm or lack of passion for the idea, but you're just physically and mentally very, very tired. If you're really tired you can't be productive. One of the things that I focus really hard in Meebo is work-life balance. I rock-climb, I do yoga, I play Ultimate Frisbee, I run, and those to me are just as important as the work I do at Meebo. So, I have this thing, you work hard play hard, and they're equally important. Because if you don't play hard and balance the "work hard" part you're going to tether one way or the other. Burning out is painful. You see it in an engineer, you see it in people who work all the time. You get cranky, you get demotivated and this spiral that keeps going and feeding on itself. You want the spiral to go the other way. The happier you are and the more balanced you are, the happier, more productive you can be and the more imaginative you can be with the work that you do and you can get more ideas that way. Again, super, super important. I will kick my employees out sometimes from work early and force them on vacation if I have to to get them to have more of that balance. Lucy: It is really important. We heard of some new research, the listeners might find interesting, that there is research that shows, especially in this space, in tech space, and I'm sure it's true in any creative space, that you really can't work longer than eight hours on something without starting to make the crossover mistakes that make it unproductive. Sandy: I can do that. [laughs] Lucy: Yeah. Which is pretty interesting. Larry: Sandy, I love that thought. Yes. Sandy, with all the things you've done, the billions of page views and millions of users and everything, you've already achieved a great deal. What is next for you? Sandy: That's a good question. My personal goal for Meebo has always been, I should be able to go to any city in the world and say the word "Meebo" and people's eyes should light up and they should know exactly what I'm talking about. People are doing that with Facebook a little but they don't do that with Meebo and I'd love for that to happen. Personally, that's self-interesting too. I started out as a software engineer and then you learn how to manage, you learn how to be a leader. Now, as a CTO my role is divided now where I do a lot of internal management. So, team building and hiring and personal development of the people that work for me. But also, the external part of that. So, reaching out to other folks, going to industry events, speaking on panels. As someone who does both, you can't really do both really, really well if you're pulled in two directions. So, I've been learning to really love the external part. This interview, for example, is really fun for me. I really like going to meet young people outside and encouraging them to start their own ventures. I really like mentoring young people, I like going to these entrepreneurial conferences and inspiring young folks. I really love that part and so I'd love to see more of that in my career and my personal development. Obviously, my commitments and my heart is at Meebo. So, trying to find a good balance there is something that I'm trying to do right now, it's a personal goal of mine. To be honest, I don't know what I'll be doing in five or six years. Hopefully, Meebo will be wildly successful and we'll be looking at trillions of page views instead of billions. But once you start your own venture it's hard to go back to work with somebody else. So, either starting something else or seeing where Meebo goes, I don't know. I really don't know. Larry: Well, we're going to track you and follow you. Lucy: Thank you very much for your passion around inspiring more young people to pursue entrepreneurship, technical endeavors, young women to pursue computer science. You're an awesome role model. That's exactly what NCWIT is really trying to do. It's so important. So, thank you for that. Sandy: No worries. This is really fun. Lucy: OK. Well, great. We enjoyed talking to you. I want to remind listeners that they can find this and other interviews at w3w3.com and ncwit.org See you around, Sandy. Sandy: OK.
