A lifelong lover of fiber arts, Susan Strawn's career in textiles began in an unexpected corner: with training as a biomedical illustrator. She found cloth far more exciting than biology, so she turned her eye for detail to illustrating PieceWork magazine. She added photostyling to her duties, bringing textile stories to life and demonstrating the steps of various needlework techniques. After a decade on the staff of the magazine, she decided to devote herself to studying and writing about textiles, earning a PhD in Textiles and Clothing. Although her initial interest was in writing, she discovered that she loved teaching. She became a Professor in the Department of Fashion at Dominican University, with a roster of classes she loved to teach (and that would make a textile lover swoon to take). Now retired from the university, she is exploring the importance of textiles, especially knitting, in her own life through essays and illustrations. With a particular interest in everyday cloth and the insight it offers into women's lives, Susan's hands are always busy with needle, pen, or keyboard. Today I talked to Lisa F. Rosenberg about Fine, I'm a Terrible Person (Sibylline Press, 2025). The pain of 73-year-old Aurora's divorce over thirty years before continues to reverberate – she's eccentric, filled with schemes, and only able to function with help from her daughter. Born in the 500-year-old Jewish community of Rhodes, she mixes Judeo-Espanol (Ladino) aphorisms into her speech and thinks she speaks Spanish, but few can understand her. With an expired license and an ancient car, she drives to Los Angeles hoping to find a treasure after the death of her father's last wife. Aurora's daughter Leyla is also affected by her father's abrupt departure and spends her life seeking perfection, trying not to let her mother make her crazy, and striving to fit into their wealthy San Francisco community. When she learns that her husband might be having an affair, she takes her two young sons for a madcap weekend in Los Angeles where she'll have to bend a few rules, grapple with her mother, sneak into her husband's conference, and learn a bit about going with the flow. This is a charming mother-daughter novel about immigrants, overcoming family dysfunction, the cuisine of the Jewish community of Rhodes, and learning to overcome obstacles. Lisa F. Today, we're diving into a complex and nuanced topic—raising daughters in today's world. Joining me for this conversation is Cathy Adams, a longtime friend of the pod, powerhouse in the parenting space, and champion of mindful, connected parenting. Her latest book, which takes center stage in today's discussion, is Restoring Our Girls: How Real Conversations Shape Our Daughters' Lives, Help Them with Teen Challenges, and Remind Them That They Matter. With her background as a clinical social worker, certified parent coach, and former child and family therapist—as well as her experience as a mom of three daughters and university professor—Cathy brings a rich, multifaceted perspective to this important topic. In this episode, Cathy and I explore the unique challenges girls face today, from societal pressures and cultural conditioning to navigating a fast-paced, often judgmental world. We discuss the importance of parents addressing their own emotional baggage, being mindful of their reactions, and recognizing how fear can hold us back from having the messy but meaningful conversations our daughters need. Cathy also shares strategies for creating judgment-free spaces where girls feel heard, validated, and supported in becoming their authentic selves. About Cathy Adams Cathy Cassani Adams, LCSW, co-hosts the long-running Zen Parenting Radio podcast and founded the Zen Parenting Conference in Chicago. What if the key to thriving under pressure was simpler than you thought? In today's episode, Erin tackles one of the toughest challenges leaders face: staying positive and intentional during high-pressure situations. Whether you're leading a team through tight deadlines or navigating unpredictable circumstances, this episode offers actionable insights to help you lead with clarity and joy. Below are five key takeaways from the episode, giving you the tools to transform stress into an opportunity for intentional leadership: 1. Set the Stage: Define Your Leadership "Why" Intentional leadership starts with purpose. Leaders who act with clarity instead of reacting impulsively create stronger, more engaged teams. Research by Gallup shows that 70% of employee engagement is directly tied to the quality of their manager. Setting a clear "why" can transform mundane tasks into meaningful contributions. During the launch of I See You!, the improve it! team dedicated time to align their purpose with their goals. This exercise not only reinforced the mission, but energized their efforts as well--proving that purpose-driven leadership fosters both morale and productivity. Actionable Tip: Reflect on your "why" as a leader and how it aligns with your team's objectives. Share this vision during team meetings to build a sense of collective purpose. 2. Spark Joy: Lead with Empathy and Creativity Leadership isn't just about getting things done—it's about creating an environment where your team feels joyful and valued. Studies from Harvard Business Review reveal that joyful employees are 20% more productive. Simple actions, like celebrating small wins or infusing creativity into routines, can make a big difference. Erin's team's decision to hold a goal-setting session by the Charleston waterfront exemplifies how changing the environment and mindset can spark inspiration. A surprise visit from a ladybug became a symbolic moment, reminding them that joy leads to serendipitous success. Actionable Tip: Incorporate small rituals of joy, such as sharing weekend highlights on Slack or starting meetings with a funny meme, to boost team morale. 3. Master Goal-Setting: Move from Vision to Action Effective leaders bridge the gap between vision and execution through structured goal-setting. The SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) is a proven method, with a 42% higher success rate, according to a study by Dominican University of California. During the I See You! book launch, Erin and her team set an ambitious goal of reaching 10,000 readers—a target that was both measurable and aligned with our purpose. Naming their ladybug "OprahGabby2024" and creating a hashtag around it infused fun and focus into this vision. Actionable Tip: Start your week by setting one SMART goal for yourself and your team. Break it down into smaller tasks and track progress. 4. Overcome Leadership Challenges with Intention Leadership is not without hurdles, from burnout to team conflicts. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in staying intentional. Tools like mindfulness practices and feedback loops can keep leaders grounded and connected to their teams. At improve it!, Erin and her team regularly set monthly intentions and check in with team members to understand their needs. This consistent effort fosters psychological safety and reduces resistance to change. Actionable Tip: Schedule a 10-minute reflection session at the end of each day to assess wins and areas for improvement. This practice helps maintain focus and adaptability. 5. Commit to a 30-Day Leadership Challenge Small, intentional actions compound over time, creating significant impact. In the episode, Erin encourages listeners to commit to a 30-day leadership challenge—such as starting meetings with gratitude or setting weekly SMART goals—to build positive habits. These practices improve team morale, engagement, and productivity, one step at a time. Actionable Tip: Choose one intentional leadership practice to implement over the next 30 days. Track your progress and share your experience with your team to inspire collective growth. Final Thoughts Intentional leadership is a journey, not a destination. By focusing on purpose, sparking joy, setting clear goals, and addressing challenges with intention, you can lead your team to thrive under pressure. As we learned from our community question, maintaining positivity starts with the small, deliberate choices we make every day. Ready to take the next step? These first responders had diverse assignments, from protecting critical infrastructure like bridges and tunnels to being deployed overseas for combat or training missions. Many people may not be aware that thousands of first responders are also military service members. The NYPD alone had over 1,212 employees active in the reserves or National Guard, who could be called to overseas duty at any time. Studies indicate factors behind school shootings include easy access to firearms, family dysfunction, lack of family supervision, and mental illness among many other psychological issues. Among the top motives of attackers were bullying/persecution/threatened (75%) and revenge (61%), while 54% reported having numerous reasons. Hello and welcome back to the 68th episode of Loving Later Life, and I have to say that you are in for such a very special treat. You're about to hear a story proving the fact that it is never, ever too late to see your dreams come true. This is a story of two incredible women in their 80's…one of whom is my mother. It is a story of friendship, of courage, tenacity, resilience, love, and passion. It is a story that comes full circle spotlighting relationships, perseverance, and timing. I am so excited to say that due to a change in their schedule while my mom was in town for a presentation they were doing about Sarah at Dominican University, I was able to grab them for 30 minutes for an impromptu recording at a small park sitting at a picnic table. You all met my mom Elaine Lang Ockner in episode 35 of LLL and if you haven't listened to it yet, you must check it out after you listen to this episode. She is is a pianist/composer, and Musical Director. She has composed the music for many musical stage productions and created original music for Bravo's TV documentaries on the lives of Sarah Brightman, Jackie Chan and Nathan Lane. She was also pianist and Musical Director for Princess Cruises, Royal Viking, and Sitmar Cruise Lines. My mom met June Richards in 1979. June is a professional actress, theatre director and emeritus professor. June created theatre programs for Dominican University, Contra Costa College, and served as Chair of Visual and Performing Arts at San Diego City College, and has directed more than 100 productions. Since they met, they've been dear friends and artistic partners. Over the years their collaboration created many theatrical projects and wacky adventures behind the scenes. As single mothers they persisted even as they experienced heartache and sadness with relationships and loss of loved ones; choosing not to be taken down but instead to focus on their creative passion. One constant thread in the quilt of their creations was a musical they wrote in the 1980's of the story of Sarah Bernhardt, the renowned French actress who also defied the odds and never gave up. Fast forward 40+ years later to right now, their musical “The Divine Sarah” has been selected out of over 40 submissions of new works by the Ross Valley Players in Marin County, California to be produced this month, March 2024. Ironically, 100 years after Sarah's death, Paris recently had a Sarah Bernhardt exhibition. Vogue magazine had a spread, and Barbra Streisand is a super fan, talking about Sarah in her new book. (And if you're listening Ms. Barbra, there is a ticket waiting for you at the theatre!) Loving Later Life listeners, if you want to be moved and inspired, you must listen to these women tell their story. Annnd, be sure to listen all the way through because I got special permission to share with you a one-minute sneak preview of one of the songs played by my mom, the composer, Elaine Lang Ockner. So now, picture if you will, I'm sitting at a picnic table with these two beautiful and talented women in the warm sun, birds chirping, (the occasional car driving by), and my phone resting on the table to record their incredible story….

How does trauma impact the workplace and organizational performance? If you're a human being, then yes, trauma impacts you and your team. Trauma doesn't care whether you're at work or not. Everyone experiences trauma differently in their brain and body. The solution is to create a safe and trusting environment for leaders to get curious about their people and for someone in distress to be able to get support. The important thing to remember is that this isn't a competition - no one's trauma is more or less "worthy" than another's.Today, my guest Katharine Manning and I discuss what is trauma, how it affects the workplace, how we can recognize trauma in others, and 5 steps to respond to a colleague, team member - or frankly anyone - dealing with trauma. She shares great examples of how we might brush things off or inadvertently let go of a great employee when we're not cognizant of trauma, what it means to be a trauma-informed organization, and three steps to creating one. This was a robust conversation and I know whether you are a leader or a colleague will get so much out of it to boost performance and engagement - while also supporting someone in need. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Any trauma will change us - we need to acknowledge that change, we can then embrace that new version of us.Trauma can manifest itself in different ways in different people. It can also be triggered by situations that, for some, may not be triggering and for others it's life-shattering. You can make tough decisions and be a strong leader with empathy. Those are the best leaders with the most successful companies. "Trauma isn't a jacket that you can just take off when it's time to go to work. We carry it with us and it affects how we show up…I want to get people away from trying to decide whether what you have gone through counts as trauma. Just focus on the person in front of you and what they need." — Katharine Manning About Katharine Manning, President, Blackbird DC and author, The Empathetic Workplace Katharine Manning is the President of Blackbird DC, which provides training and consultation on empathy at work. She is the author of The Empathetic Workplace: Five Steps to a Compassionate, Calm, and Confident Response to Trauma on the Job, and teaches at American University and in the Master's in Trauma-Informed Leadership Program at Dominican University. Amy Thompson is a beloved Hoffman Teacher and Coach. In today's episode, she shares her story of recovery, losing her father, the grief she experienced from his loss, and her experience going through cancer treatment while training to become a Hoffman Process teacher. And, really, Amy shares so much more. Listen in as Amy shares about learning she was accepted into the Hoffman teacher training program at the same time she received her cancer diagnosis. She knew she needed to care for both her body and her spirit. With an assured Yes to both, Amy embarked on a powerful journey of healing all of her Quadrinity through chemotherapy infusions and the work of the Process. Amy and Drew talk about the need to be responsible for our lives. One beautiful thing Amy got from the Process was realizing that her patterns were the source of feeling over-responsible for everyone else. By transforming these patterns into a more positive way of being through her work at the Process, she reclaimed her power. With this power, found she could step more fully into what she calls intense self-responsibility for how she shows up in every moment. Amy says, "Hoffman, for me, was not the end of my journey but definitely a huge milestone in my own recovery, in my own kind of recognition for who I am and this whole being able to be a good human." Hoffman is a part of Amy's family. Many in her family have done the Process. Amy's mother-in-law, Nita Gage, is also a Hoffman Process teacher. Listen in as Amy shares so much more of her life and her Hoffman journey. We hope you enjoy this conversation.
