Fae, Ghosts, Ancestry & Old Cornish Magic Hello Witches Join me for episode one of Witch Week for Samhain. On this episode I am joined by the wonderful Freyja, The Corn(ish) Witch, for a deeply magical conversation exploring the folklore, spirits, and ancestral traditions of Cornwall — where the veil between worlds seems to shimmer a little closer to the skin. Together we wander through - How Freyja will be celebrating Samhain and honouring her ancestors. Her own ghost and fae encounters, and what they've taught her about the Otherworld. The Cornish fae — from the Bucca to the Piskies — and their role in local lore. The mysteries of Merlin, Tintagel and Cornwall's most powerful magical sites. The Cornish Pellars, traditional cunning folk and healers of the region. How ancestral trauma can echo through our DNA The celebration of Allantide — Cornwall's own festival of apples, ancestors and soul fire. Plus, a few lesser-known herbs to work with this Samhain season — rooted in Cornish tradition and spirit medicine. This episode feels like walking through mist on the moors — old stories rising up from the land, whispering through time. This one's for those who feel the call of the old paths — for witches who remember the song beneath the soil. Roxy Striar & John Humphrey react to Coraline (2009), the acclaimed stop-motion dark fantasy from Laika Studios and director Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach). Based on the Neil Gaiman novel, this visually stunning and hauntingly imaginative film tells the story of Coraline Jones (voiced by Dakota Fanning – War of the Worlds, The Twilight Saga), a curious young girl who discovers a secret door in her new home that leads to an eerie “Other World” — one that seems perfect at first… until its sinister truth is revealed. The film also stars Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) as both Mel Jones and the chilling Other Mother, Ian McShane (Deadwood, John Wick) as the flamboyant Mr. Bobinsky, Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) and Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley) as the eccentric retired actresses Miss Spink and Miss Forcible, and Keith David (The Thing, Gargoyles) as the mysterious Cat. Iconic and highly searched moments include the discovery of the tunnel to the Other World, Coraline's button-eyed family reveal, the spider-like final showdown with the Other Mother, and the film's mesmerizing stop-motion visuals that still captivate audiences today. A mix of gothic whimsy and childhood dread, Coraline remains a modern animated masterpiece — blending craftsmanship, atmosphere, and a chilling message about appreciation, courage, and identity. Macbeth (1606) is a play about real Scottish history, but is also a drama of the mind, clearly written with James I in mind, who was both Scottish and obsessed with witches. The opening scenes alternate between political and military doings and the dark Otherworld of the blasted heath, with the three witches.

Bonus Episode #55 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan re-enters the fog in Silent Hill f. After thirteen years of waiting, Silent Hill returns with a bold new entry that trades American decay for 1960s rural Japan. In this comprehensive review, we delve into Silent Hill f, exploring how developer NeoBards Entertainment and writer Ryukishi07 have reimagined the legendary horror franchise. From the fog-shrouded streets of Ebisugaoka to the nightmarish Otherworld shrine complex, we examine every aspect of protagonist Hinako Shimizu's harrowing journey through psychological terror, toxic relationships, and unwanted transformation. This episode features an extensive breakdown of the game's stunning soundtrack, composed by Silent Hill veteran Akira Yamaoka alongside Kensuke Inage, Dai, and Xaki. We discuss how Yamaoka infuses his signature industrial sound with Japanese essence, and how Inage corrupts traditional gagaku court music into something nightmarish. We also cover the game's atmospheric presentation, melee-focused combat system, cultural symbolism, technical performance on PC, and whether this risky departure from series tradition successfully captures what makes Silent Hill special. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! Special thanks to our Executive Producers: Jexak, Xancu, Jeff, & Mike. Originating in Norse and Celtic mythologies, elves and fairies are a firmly established part of Western popular culture. Since the days of the Vikings and Arthurian legend, these sprites have undergone huge transformations. From J. R. R. Tolkien's warlike elves, based on medieval legend, to little flower fairies whose charms even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle succumbed to, they permeate European art and culture. In Elves and Fairies: A Short History of the Otherworld (Yale University Press, 2025), Dr. Matthias Egeler explores these mythical creatures of Iceland, Ireland, Scotland, and England, and their continental European cousins. Dr. Egeler goes on a journey through enchanted landscapes and literary worlds. He describes both their friendly and their dangerous, even deadly, sides. We encounter them in the legends of King Arthur's round table and in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, in the terrible era of the witch trials, in magic's peaceful conquest of Victorian bourgeois salons, in the child-friendly form of Peter Pan, and even as helpers in the contemporary fight against environmental destruction. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Hey - Geoffrey here. I'd like to let you in on something super exciting coming up on Night Falls. On October 19th, we'll be launching a brand-new Romantasy series, adapted and designed for sleep. It's a slow-burn love story of two fae, two rival courts, broken bonds and forbidden love. Each chapter will take you further across the veil, deeper into a world caught in eternal twilight, where the Seelie and Unseelie courts sit side by side. We begin our journey at an equinox banquet, where Leanen Sidhe, lady of the Seelie court, is surprised by an uninvited guest. It's her childhood friend, Finn, now tall, dark, and, she hates to admit - incredibly handsome. The last she saw him, it was ten years ago, and Finn was defecting into the night, heading to the Unseelie court, without even saying goodbye. Now, he's here to seek her help. And perhaps, her forgiveness, too… But Fae don't take broken bonds lightly. This is going to be an exclusive, subscriber-only series, which you can unlock by joining Night Falls Premium. Becoming a subscriber not only unlocks this new romantasy saga, but also gives you full access to hundreds of exclusive sleep stories, completely ad-free. Send Catherine a text MessageThe existence and importance of other worlds populated by other beings, non-human beings, is consistent across mythological traditions. Today, the dominant culture has a difficult time accepting these stories and yet we continue to tell them.We continue to need them. In this episode, I share the Celtic story "The Adventure of Bran" and reflect on what stories like this might offer.“And there seems never to have been an uncivilized tribe, a race, or nation of civilized men who have not had some form of belief in an unseen world, peopled by unseen beings. In religions, mythologies, and the Fairy-Faith, too, we behold the attempts which have been made by different peoples in different ages to explain in terms of human experience this unseen world, its inhabitants, its laws, and man's relation to it." --- W.Y. Read transcriptGather around power-level enthusiasts and tournament fighters, because this week on Play Comics we're charging up our ki and diving headfirst into the legendary slugfest that is Dragon Ball Z: Budokai for PS2 and GameCube. That's right, we're looking at the 2002 fighting game that asked the burning question “What if we took the first three arcs of Dragon Ball Z and squeezed them into a button-mashing experience that makes even the most patient Z-Fighter want to go Super Saiyan with frustration?” Developed by Dimps and published by Infogrames (back when they still existed and weren't just a nostalgic memory floating in gaming's hyperbolic time chamber), this cel-shaded beatdown promised to let players experience everything from Raditz's surprise family reunion to Cell's perfectionist power trip. What it delivered was a fighting system so basic that even Yamcha could probably figure it out, paired with enough beam struggles to make your thumbs file for workers' compensation. Joining us for this Saiyan-sized discussion is the one and only Doc Issues from Capes on the Couch, because when you need someone to analyze the psychological implications of repeatedly punching people until they explode into light particles you call a professional. Together we'll explore how this game managed to compress roughly 100 episodes of screaming, power-ups, and “next time on Dragon Ball Z” frustrating end caps into a tournament format that somehow made sense. So grab your orange gi, practice your best Kamehameha stance, and prepare for an episode that's over 9000 times more entertaining than waiting five episodes for Goku to finish charging his spirit bomb. Will this manga-to-game adaptation achieve its final form? Or will it get sent to Other World faster than you can say “Kakarot”? Time to find out if this Z-Fighter deserves a senzu bean or a one-way ticket to Snake Way! Learn such things as: What happens when you try to balance Goku's overwhelming power level against characters who can barely survive a Saibaman encounter? Is there a psychological explanation for why watching grown men scream for five minutes while powering up never gets old? What's the secret to making players care about story mode when everyone already knows Goku's going to win everything anyway? And so much more! Österreichisches Kino hatte lange mit Vorurteilen zu kämpfen. "Feel Bad Cinema", langweilige Bildsprache, spröde Zugänge. Eine neue Generation von Filmemacher:innen nähert sich zwar weiterhin ernsten Themen. Aber mit frischen Blickwinkeln. Der Grazer Florian Pochlatko ist ein Aushängeschild diesbezüglich. Sein Spielfilmdebüt "How to be Normal and the Oddness of the Other World" lässt berührende Emotionen und wilde Visionen, Arthouse und Popkultur kollidieren. Pia Reiser und Christian Fuchs reden mit dem cinephilen Regisseur, der in Kinos und Videotheken aufgewachsen ist, aber auch über seine Einflüsse und Sozialisation. In a rare surfacing in the contemporary world, JF and Phil discuss a film that has just been released. Bryn Chainey's Rabbit Trap is psychological horror in the tradition of Repulsion, Jacob's Ladder, and Angel Heart. But it is more: a metaphysical film exploring the mystery of sound and the Otherworld of Faerie—an excursion into that weird country, so deftly explored by Arthur Machen and Algernon Blackwood, where wonder and terror perform their eldritch duets. I spoke to Bryn Chainey, Director of 'Rabbit Trap', Bryn's first feature film. The story centres around a couple in (no later than) 1976 who have moved into the Welsh countryside on a creative retreat. Daphne (Rosy McEwen) an avant garde vocalist and her husband Darcy (Dev Patel) an experimental sound recordist, use the new found space to explore their art and their relationship. In doing so, they stumble across unusual sounds, enter the depths of nature and experience something Otherworldly...at which point a stranger enters their lives. It was great to chat with Bryn and learn what had inspired him. Turns out that, like many of us, he's been familiar with these worlds since childhood. And, (as these magical kinds of projects tend to do) against all odds, the film found it's way into the insightful hands of SpectreVision - yet another nudge that there's definitely something driving this opening of hearts and minds towards the Otherworld, into the mainstream. It's a brilliant film, sensitive to these themes, incredible cinematography due to the fact that it's all shot on 35mm, giving a soothing sense of spaciousness to the natural world backdrop that runs throughout the story. The soundscape is masterful and an experience all by itself. I loved it!! Go and see it if you can. The film releases Friday 12th September in cinemas all across the US. We are hoping it will come to Europe too. In the meantime, check out Bryn's previous short film Moritz and the Woodwose (2013) - I think the portrayal of the being is really inspired. Thanks for watching
