This episode is inspired by two things: my recent feature in Forbes, and my incredible friend Chelsea Wallace. Chelsea and I were both recently featured in major publications, and both of us chose to downplay those features. When Chelsea came out with an entire podcast episode about why, I asked her if I could run with the inspiration to do a similar episode because I'm hoping it will give you some insight into how things like imposter syndrome can come up no matter what stage you're at, and why I'm going to be doing some things differently moving forward. Sharing all kinds of personal details in this episode - more than I planned. We couldn’t get on Facebook for the Live Show, bu we still recorded. We actually recorded on Thanksgiving, before the feast, which worked out well for the weigh-in. John has some big news for us  —he has been cleared by his therapist for weight-loss surgery! Yay! He also gives us a quick Dude Cooking recipe for vegetable soup and we talk about getting more vegetables in, even though it’s been too cold (for Emily) for a salad lately. From John and Emily, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and we hope you extend grace to yourself. It’s a very eating-centric time of year and people tend to beat themselves up the most. We want to help keep you accountable to yourself and your health and we are so grateful you’ve joined us for this podcast! New to Hate to Weight? Call in your WINS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 Meet Your Hosts: John Bukenas is a podcast editor from New Jersey. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. Emily Prokop is a podcast editor and consultant from Connecticut. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: We couldn’t get on Facebook for the live show because Facebook and Instagram were down. Sorry! (I couldn’t even upload our video. That kept crashing, too! Sorry! — Emily) What are you thankful for? Also, Emily was not prepared for this question and went right to food. John is grateful for his therapist and has some big news! Big congratulations to John, his mental health has been cleared to get the bariatric surgery! Now it’s just a matter of hitting a goal weight. What is with our kids trying to kill us?! Emily ate more vegetables this week, even though it’s been too cold for salads. Dude Cooking vegetable soup recipe: three bags of frozen vegetables in a crock pot with chicken broth. Do you like playing with food in your teeth? We referred back to Harriet Morris, Emily’s eating coach and her games to avoid binge-eating. Are you an Aldi fan? They have a lot of gluten-free stuff! John is comparing the benefits of Intermittent Fasting vs. Keto. It’s awesome that food manufacturers add more information to the package to help us make easier decisions. But the more we find out about nutrition and food information, the more informed we can be about what we put in our bodies. The memes in our Facebook group are awesome! We love when you post them because they always make us laugh! John plans the next few weeks of weight loss. Have you heard of sous vide cooking? Emily’s husband loves doing it and he’s testing it out on the Thanksgiving turkey. Sorry we couldn’t do our Winning Wednesdays this week because we couldn’t get on Facebook! Just remember, one day of eating will not ruin all your weight-loss. Emily found herself in Two-terville (where the first number on the scale is a 2) but, phew! She goes back to One-derland. Reverb — great for singers, horrible for podcast editors. Did you know Emily can play guitar and juggle? We get into a bit of banter about The Beatles Thanks to our friend Dave Jackson for giving us a shout-out! “Comparison is the thief of joy.”  —Theodore Roosevelt Sorry I couldn’t get the video up in our group! It was too big and would not load :( Don’t forget to give yourself some grace! Later, Weighters! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories!  SUMMARY Erik and Emily Orton, parents of five children and authors of the new release, Seven at Sea, explain “why a New York City family cast off convention for a life-changing year on a sailboat.” Together, these parents plan a way to bounce back from a career failure while also creating kids with character who are armed with lasting family memories. Leaving their two-bedroom, one-bath apartment in New York City, this audacious, courageous family of seven buy a boat they name Fezywig. If they waited until "the time was right," the opportunity would be gone. So, the Ortons set sail from New York to and around the Caribbean--more than 2500 miles! As a result, they learn more than how to sail together; they also learn to live together—joyfully and simply. KEY POINTS Because the whole family is involved in making plans, the dream moves forward. The Ortons learn to genuinely like the small spaces of New York City, and, in fact, feel lonely and overwhelmed by the work inherent in big houses. Living “vertically” in New York, helps them adapt to living on Fezywig where space is minimal. “Earbud cocooning” – a strategy for creating personal space and privacy Easy ocean access gives the Orton kids a natural playground as well as room to stretch and grow. Beach walks give Erik & Emily a place and space for private conversations. The work of sailing and living on Feziwig creates real confidence and character-building experiences. A three-day supply of water takes the entire family five hours to ferry. The Orton family emerges with three kinds of confidence: competence, credibility, and calm. As parents, their credibility is on the line: would they be doers or just talkers? They share meals and swap stories with other “cruisers,” unexpectedly making lasting friends. One daughter learns to feel “more comfortable with being uncomfortable” and showed her how to dream big and have the tenacity to hold on to a big vision. QUOTES FROM THE ORTONS “When the people you love need you, you show up for them.” - Emily “We realized we liked being in close quarters. And, yes, it does lend itself to a certain kind of friction and tension, but it also lends itself to a certain kind of coziness and connection.” – Erik “Once we got out there, we realized we were the biggest family on the smallest boat.” – Erik “What is the ratio of things we say we’re going to do versus things we actually do?” – Erik “I know that all of life is a risk…but, at the end of every day that we were illness- or injury-free, I felt grateful. I tried to take it just one day at a time.” - Emily “The main difference [to making friends on the water] is time…you’re all open and vulnerable. You need each other!” – Erik “I was really interested in trying to expand time…by having unique memories [of the same experiences].” – Emily “We knew we only had our children for a certain amount of time…and we realized this window was small and getting smaller. And we could wait for a convenient time; we could wait to have more money on hand. It would just be easier if our kids were older…but they would be gone!” - Erik “We knew if we made this investment now, it would compound over time, and it would only go up in value.” – Erik “[Home] is the feeling of connection we have with each other.” – Emily “What my family and husband all wanted from me was to know I was hearing them, and seeing them, and encouraging them. They just wanted me to be an emotional touchstone, and that’s very mobile.” – Emily “The memories that last are the ones we carry with us, and we’re very grateful to have a lot of those.” – Erik BUY Seven at Sea: Why a New York City Family Cast Off Convention for a Life-changing Year on a Sailboat RECOMMENDATION Strengthen your family in your own way: Look in each other’s eyes. Eat dinner together. Sit around the kitchen table together and talk about what’s important to you. Go on a walk with your spouse. Create questions that will bring you closer.
