Magnesium is incredibly important for thyroid function and, unfortunately, most thyroid patients aren't getting enough. This is for 3 main reasons: 1. Thyroid dysfunction increases magnesium breakdown and excretion. In other words, thyroid problems promote the elimination of magnesium from your body. 2. Stress increases magnesium usage. Because thyroid dysfunction makes you more susceptible to stress, thyroid patients have a higher demand for magnesium compared to the average population. 3. Most people aren't getting enough magnesium from their diet (about 80% or so). This has to do with the fact that magnesium is commonly found in plants and most thyroid patients are eating too much processed food. How can you fix this problem? By getting more magnesium from your diet and by taking additional magnesium supplements as needed. The three best magnesium supplements for hypothyroidism are... 1. Magnesium glycinate. 2. Magnesium citrate. 3. Magnesium l-threonate. Want to learn more about different forms of magnesium? Today, we are diving into a case study of a horse called Monty. His journey is an inspiring story of dedication and progress. His owner, Lisa, and I started addressing his issues in November 2023, and since then, Monty has transformed remarkably. This case reflects many of the concepts we have discussed recently. So, listeners who face similar challenges with their horses will easily relate to it.Monty's BackgroundMonty is a 16-year-old Rocky Mountain gelding. He lives with his owner, Lisa, in Minnesota. Lisa has over a decade of experience with horses, having owned them for ten years. She and Monty have extensively engaged in trail riding, exploring areas like Wyoming, North and South Dakota, and Kentucky, also participating in competitive trail challenges. The beginning of Monty's Health Journey In March 2021, Monty developed laminitis symptoms, indicating a potential health issue. A blood test in May 2021 revealed high insulin levels (500), slightly elevated glucose (127), and a borderline low thyroid hormone level (1.3).Initial Treatment and ConcernsMonty received medication to manage his insulin and thyroid levels. However, despite improved numbers, his overall health deteriorated over time. He became lethargic, had a dull coat, and showed signs of muscle wasting.Addressing Anaemia and NutritionAfter identifying anemia and low thyroid function as critical issues affecting his well-being, Lisa and I tailored a nutrition plan, including B12, folic acid, iron, selenium, and gut-supportive supplements, and implemented it to address his problems.Adjusting Medication and NutritionOver time, we shifted our focus toward a clean and balanced diet, focusing on nutrient-rich foods and supplements. We reduced his medication and adjusted his nutrition to help him gain weight, increase his energy levels, and improve his overall health. Exercise and Quality of LifeWe also incorporated exercise into his routine, tailored to his energy levels, to improve his circulation, insulin sensitivity, and overall well-being. Lisa began to notice positive changes in his energy and social behavior, indicating his quality of life had improved.Progress and MonitoringWith regular check-ins and bloodwork monitoring, Monty showed significant improvements in his insulin, glucose, and thyroid levels, indicating we had successfully managed his health issues without relying on medications. Adjusting his nutrition and lifestyle also contributed to his overall recovery and well-being.Key TakeawaysMonty's case study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to equine health, focusing on tailored nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle adjustments. It disproves the common belief that horses with metabolic issues cannot recover without medication and highlights the effectiveness of proper nutrition and care for achieving optimal health outcomes.Links and resources:Connect with Elisha Edwards on her website Join my email list to be notified about new podcast releases and upcoming webinars.Free Webinar Masterclass: Four Steps to Solving Equine Metabolic Syndrome NaturallyRegister for Resolving Equine Metabolic Syndrome Naturally now

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Kelly: Hi Dr. Cabral I have always had very regular digestion and eat a healthy Whole Foods plant-based vegan diet. However, after having my baby nine months ago, everything changed. I went through natural childbirth and the babies head size was in the 99th percentile I had some pelvic floor issues after delivery And part of that was bleeding after bowel movements. The therapist attributed it to structural changes in pelvic floor. I have worked on pelvic floor exercises to remedy this, but currently the only thing that prevents me from bleeding when having bowel movements is drinking one “smooth move†tea per night, which features the herb Senna. I understand that you should never take laxatives on a daily basis, but this is the only thing that helps! Is senna ok? Kenzie: I saw you recommended fecal immunotherapy test. If you sometimes have blood from hemmorhoids would that show in test/ effect results? Thank you Anonymous: Hi, dr. C., I’m tracking my cycle with Oura.My follicular phase is usually between 17-21 days long,my luteal phase is around 10 days. What does that mean? My periods are not strong but they start with spotting a few days before the actual VERY PAINFUL first day of my period. The cramps/pain come in 3 or 4 intervals that last around 2h each, usually only on that first day but lately even on the second day once or twice. The pain is excruciating & unbearable, but I don’t take any pharmaceuticals. I use supplements, not sure about their bioavailability. I have fibromyalgia & I see with Oura that I get a lot of REM sleep but not 90min of deep sleep (usually between 1h or 75min, rarely 85). My stress levels are also very high throughout most of the day. Testing is not an option, please help Anonymous: Hi ! I started taking parasite protocol last month and 2 weeks later , i began seeing white specks(that look like sesame seeds), and black flat hard shells(the size of a small bean) in my stool. I have been seeing so may of them since as well as a lot of mucus in the stool, and I am wondering if you have any insight on what kinds of parasite or parasite eggs these could be? If these are eggs and not fully grown parasites, would that mean I got the parasitic infection recently? I haven't seen any grown worms yet. Also, what can I do so I never get parasites again? It is so traumatic. Lindsay: Hi Dr Cabral. I have self diagnosed myself with (R-CPD). I have all the symptoms. Mainly I can burp and get very gassy in my stomach because of it. I have no pain like other thank god. In my research the only thing I've found people do for relief is botox on their throat. Is there any functional medicine practices to help with the extended stomach issue from this? Hannah: Hi Dr.Cabral. I would first off like to thankyou for all of the information you provide on these podcasts, it has changed my life in so many ways for the better. Im 17 and have been listening for 2 years now every since i started getting sick, i have had amenorrhea for two years that was followed by losing 17 kg unexpectedly in 6 months and alot of other issues with my gut even eating over 3000 calories a day (but whole food) . However the issue i have now is my thyroid keeps getting lower (currently at 3.74) and i cannot stop binge eating after a TBI in a horse riding accident and have gained 5+ kg in 1 month and it keeps going up. I cant afford lab tests (i live in australia) as i have looked into it and it just isnt possible, do you have any other recommendations? Hypothyroidism is not your garden-variety health issue where you pop a pill and call it a day. Far from it. Low thyroid is often billed as a "silent epidemic," mainly because some of the symptoms get written off as the cost of a hectic lifestyle or simply getting older. You've no doubt heard about the usual low thyroid symptoms—fatigue, weight gain, and cold sensitivity. Those get all the attention, but they're merely the tip of the iceberg. Why does this matter? Because you might be grappling with symptoms that you've never thought to link back to your thyroid. That's a big deal. Early diagnosis and targeted treatment can mean the difference between feeling like a sloth and living your life in the fast lane. And let's be real, who wants to be a sloth when you could be a cheetah? Oh, and just so you know, I'm speaking from experience. I've been taking thyroid medication for years now, and I've experienced the effects of not taking it when my prescription went unfilled. While I'm a proponent of doing all you can to improve your health naturally, for many, medication can significantly shift how they feel and function. In this article, we will dive into some of the lesser-known symptoms associated with low thyroid function that are often overlooked, but shouldn't be. Understanding these could be your ticket to reclaiming your health. Constipation or Bowel Irregularity Recently, a guy I know asked for guidance on how he could improve his regularity. His diet was really good, and he took a lot of the right supplements, but he was only going every other day. My first thought was that it could be a thyroid issue. But that's rarely what people think of when it comes to thyroid. Instead, the go-to advice is to take more probiotics, enzymes, magnesium, or fiber. But none of those solutions work well if someone's hypothyroid. Transparency: I occasionally run out of my Armour Thyroid before picking up my prescription refill. As I'm writing this, I've been out of my prescription for six days. It's had a significant effect on my digestive system, too. Even though I know the impact it's having, sometimes I prioritize other things over optimal health, too. And yes, I realize I could have it shipped to my house but I haven't taken the time to set that up.
After I hit my head on the beach in early June, I went into a downward spiral of debilitating symptoms that I initially attributed to hormonal imbalances. But it kept getting worse until eventually, my brain started shutting down and I had to check myself into the ER. Hashimoto's Disease is the most common auto-immune condition worldwide. Its symptoms and effects are wide ranging and can be felt throughout the entire body, but there are many ways of combatting them. While the mainstream approach is often to supplement with a synthetic thyroid hormone, there are various lifestyle modifactions that can have a tremendous impact on the severity of symptoms of this common disease. And, if the issues are caught and addressed early enough, there may even be a chance of reversing the disease completely. On this week's episode of the Exercise Is Health® podcast, Julie and Charlie are sitting down with world-renowned Hashimoto's expert, Dr. Anshul Gupta, to discuss what brings about Hashimoto's disease and what can be done to potentially reverse it. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Madyson: Hi! very very simple question. What are your thoughts on the usage of an air fryer? Julie: Dr. Cabral, Would you please give me your opinion on the shingles vacc? I'm 55 and have been encouraged to get it but am a bit hesitant. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Julie Kate: Hi, Love the podcast! I have a question about skin moles. I would like to understand what is the underlying root of why some people develop more moles as they get older or from the sun and why others do not. For example, my husband and I are both similar ages, spend about the same amount of time in the sun (mostly without sunscreen unless mid-day for extended periods), and have the same diet (very little to no seed oils or refined sugar). Yet, I have developed many moles and he very little. Why does my body produce this situation when others do not? Thanks for the information! Tamara: I'm a 35 year old female who had radioactive iodine treatment for Graves Disease at 17, became hypothyroid, & have taken Synthroid since. In 2017, I began taking T3 medication in addition to Synthroid. My labs looked good until a year ago, when I begun to show a suppressed TSH (0.01-0.04 mU/L), a low/normal T4 (12 pmol/L) & borderline low T3 (2.5 pmol/L). After coming off of T3 medication, my TSH rose to 0.4 mU/L, but my T4 and T3 have not changed. What could cause all three values to stay low? If I can get my T3 and T4 into the optimal range, does my TSH matter? I ran the stress, mood & metabolism lab in Sept and my T3, T4 & TSH were within range at the time. I did, however, have high cortisol throughout the day. I've since done the FM detox, heavy metal detox & mold protocol. Thank you!! Melanie: What is the cause of low/normal Free T3 but high Reverse T3 on a woman that has Hashimotos and is on thyroid medication? TSH is under 2 so it's normal. Thyroid and Menopause Madness Podcast with Dr. Joni Labbe, DC, CCN, DCCN
In this episode Dr. Labbe discusses:Introduction:Autoimmune diseases often have invisible symptoms and can fluctuate over time.Common autoimmune diseases include Lupus, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.Understanding Autoimmunity:Autoimmunity occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. The immune system misbehaves, attacking healthy tissues instead of external threats.Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an example of an autoimmune disease.Causes of Autoimmunity:Autoimmune diseases can be caused by a combination of genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and epigenetics.Predisposition refers to certain characteristics that make individuals more susceptible to developing an autoimmune disease.Genetic factors like HLA, p53, and IL10 genes have been associated with Hashimoto's and other autoimmune diseases.Environmental triggers, such as intestinal permeability (leaky gut), infections like Epstein Barr virus, and chronic infections like Lyme disease, can contribute to autoimmunity.Exposure to pollutants, toxins, chemicals, heavy metals, and mold can also act as triggers.Physical or psychological trauma and chronic stress can impact the immune system and trigger autoimmune irregularities.Epigenetics, the study of biological processes that switch genes on and off, can play a role in the development of autoimmune diseases. The Importance of Identifying Triggers and Predispositions:Understanding triggers and predispositions is crucial in managing autoimmune diseases.Functional blood tests and specialized labs like Cyrex Labs can help identify infections, hormonal imbalances, allergies, immune cell counts, and food intolerances.Identifying triggers and predispositions can provide insights into the causes of autoimmune diseases and guide personalized treatment approaches.Recognizing and addressing triggers can help reduce symptoms and improve overall health. Conclusion:Autoimmune diseases require a comprehensive understanding of triggers, predispositions, and lifestyle factors.Identifying and addressing triggers is essential for effectively managing Hashimoto's and other autoimmune conditions.Functional testing and consultations with healthcare professionals can provide valuable insights and guidance in addressing autoimmune triggers and improving overall well-being.Resources:FEELING LOUSY IS NOT "JUST PART OF GETTING OLDER." Just because your standard thyroid tests come back in the normal range, it doesn't always mean your thyroid is working optimally. Fatigue, unexplained weight gain, and brain fog can all be symptoms of an underactive thyroid—or hypothyroidism. When you're not producing enough thyroid hormones, other hormones in your body (including insulin and cortisol) can all be affected. This disruption can impact all parts of your body, including your mental health. In this episode, we take a look at hypothyroidism manifestations you might not be aware of, how to get the thyroid tests that will give you a more accurate picture of your thyroid health (spoiler alert: these are not the standard tests your doctor ordered), and how to get the help you need to get your thyroid hormones back to optimal balance. How does The Virgin Diet impact the thyroid? Gut health is a common factor in autoimmunity, and what you eat directly impacts your risk of developing certain conditions, including thyroid issues. Tune in to find out how I use diet and lifestyle habits to keep my thyroid in optimal working health!
Does this sounds familiar: You feel exhausted, but you can't sleep. Your weight is creeping up, but you don't have the energy to work out or cook. You're irritable and anxious, and you're noticing more hair on the bathroom floor. It could be adrenal fatigue or low thyroid or… both. But how can you tell the difference?Adrenal fatigue and low thyroid conditions can cause similar symptoms—but there are significant differences too. Both can be frustrating and seriously disrupt your quality of life. But there is hope, and you can feel better and enjoy your life again! The trick is getting the right support, and that starts by narrowing down exactly what's happening in your body.In this episode, Cody teaches us how to spot the differences between adrenal fatigue (and why this isn't exactly the correct term) and hypothyroidism, the signs and symptoms of both, and how they are diagnosed, so we can get the help we need to feel like ourselves again.Did you learn something new today? Are you experiencing stalls with fat loss? Or maybe what worked for you before, just isn't cutting it anymore? The metabolism is designed to respond and adapt to stressors. Our lifestyle (e.g. chronic dieting, poor nutrition) can cause stress to the metabolism, which can trigger the metabolism to push back and sabotage fat loss efforts. Check out the four stages of Metabolic Adaptation:1. Metabolic Compensation-Hunger and cravings increase, fat loss results slow or stop. Metabolic rate begins to decline, movement declines (blinking, fidgiting), motivation to exercise may wane. 2. Metabolic Resistance-Same as above, plus sleep and mood may become affected. You may also experience "wired but tired", your body may feel tired but your mind is overactive. 3. Metabolic Dysfunction-Same as above, plus you start to experience digestive symptoms such as constipation, and/or libido issues. Periods may also become irregular. 4. Metabolic Disease-Diagnosed with Low Thyroid, Hashimotos, PCOS, IBS. If you are experiencing any degree of metabolic adaptation, know this: You can still change your body and reach your body composition goal! Thyroid problems are a common yet often overlooked issue that can have a major impact on one's health and well-being. This was the case for Elle Russ, who experienced two bouts of hypothyroidism within 10 years. Elle is a #1 bestselling author, world-renowned thyroid health expert, and thought leader on confidence and self-esteem. She has written for Entrepreneur and has been featured in Success, HuffPost, Podcasting Magazine, Mind Body Green, Prevention, while offering affordable online courses and free masterclasses. Her hypothyroidism presented as menstrual irregularities, which her doctor dismissed and instead put her on birth control pills to mask the symptom. This decision was highly misguided as Elle soon experienced a host of other symptoms including acne, hair loss, rapid weight gain, fatigue, mood swings and constipation. It took E.R. 7 years to get properly diagnosed and treated for her thyroid condition because many doctors are uninformed about thyroid issues or unwilling to look into it further due to their ego or lack of time. What are some things that can contribute to low thyroid function? Elle states that: "Low thyroid function can have a wide range of symptoms, from fatigue and constipation to difficulty concentrating and mood swings. While the causes of low thyroid function can vary, some common factors can contribute to this condition." "First and foremost, diet plays a major role in maintaining healthy thyroid function. Eating a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and refined carbohydrates is not only unhealthy for your overall health, but it also disrupts the balance of hormones that your thyroid needs to stay healthy. Additionally, gluten sensitivity has been linked to hypothyroidism in some cases. Therefore, it is important to eat a clean diet consisting mostly of unprocessed whole foods such as fruits and vegetables." "Another factor that can contribute to low thyroid function is sleep deprivation or an irregular sleep cycle. Not getting enough sleep or having an inconsistent sleep schedule can disrupt hormone production and cause fatigue as well as other symptoms associated with low thyroid function. Therefore, it is important to maintain a consistent sleep schedule and get at least 8 hours of sleep each night." "Finally, having a strong support system is essential for maintaining healthy thyroid function. Having a “tribe” of supportive friends and family can help reduce stress and provide emotional support when needed. This can help keep hormones in balance and prevent the development of low thyroid function." The importance of Iodine in hypothyroidism Iodine is a key component in the production of thyroid hormones and is essential for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Without adequate iodine, hypothyroidism can develop due to decreased production of hormones. Historically, low levels of iodine were responsible for a phenomenon known as the “Goiter Belt” in the Midwest United States. This was due to a lack of iodine from ocean air, seawater, and food grown in that region. To combat this issue, people began taking iodine supplements which helped reduce the incidence of hypothyroidism in the region. Today, many people are deficient in iodine due to poor dietary habits and exposure to chlorine and bromine which can displace iodine from receptors. This can be particularly dangerous for those who swim frequently in chlorinated pools as chlorine can further deplete iodine levels. It is important to note that adults do not need fluoride in their toothpaste anymore, as it is not beneficial and may even be harmful. To optimize iodine levels, adults should consider taking a thyroid support complex that contains trace amounts of iodine. Alternatively, iodine can be obtained through food such as seaweed or cruciferous vegetables, although the jury is still out on whether raw or cooked vegetables are better. It is also important to note that if you have Hashimoto's disease, taking high doses of iodine can cause negative detox effects and make the condition worse. In this podcast you will learn about: Difference between a functional medicine doctor and a Western doctor How can having close relationships improve mental health Connection between gluten and autoimmune disorders Consequences of not following a Circadian rhythm Things that can contribute to low thyroid function Possible causes of a low sex drive Iodine importance And so much more. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Hannah: I have a lot of confusion around protein consumption, especially when building muscle. Do you have a rule of thumb of how much protein is needed? When working with a nutritionist online, at one point she had me at 112 g, my body weight was around 140. This number was super hard to hit if I was not down in protein bars and shakes. Protein bars and protein shakes do not agree with my stomach at all. After finding you, I'm doing the detox and running some labs to work on my gut health. I would really like to get protein from natural sources. Can you help with how much protein do you think is needed? Gary: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have severe gut issues and I am working with a functional Dr. We have determined I have leaky gut and bacterial imbalances in the gut. I also suffer from chronic constipation. We are trying to address these things currently. I also did a food sensitivity test for IGG and had very few problems there. However, I have massive bloating and cramping in the colon with EVERY meal no matter what food I eat. I tried the pulse test for IGE and found no increase in pulse, but I am getting horrible reactions every time I eat anything. Any advice? (I know stress is making things worse and I am very stressed currently, but this seems a bit extreme to be only stress) Thank you! Gary Mallory: Hi Dr. Cabral! I am 27 years old & have been sick since I was a toddler. I had 4 sinus surgeries by the time I was 11 and was on an insane amount of medication & antibiotics as a child (so much so that it stained my adult teeth). Ever since I've had extreme gut issues, anxiety, & more recently I've developed POTS & other auto immune issues. A year ago I learned about candida, pathogens, parasites, mold, etc. I started on my own parasite cleanse which resulted in an instant crawling sensation all over my body. I had an intense herxheimer reaction & even tested positive for the flu. Since then, I have found a local functional doctor who has ran several functional tests & currently has me on a protocol similar to yours for my immune system and detox. He believes this is the root to the vast majority of my issues. The problem today is that it's been a year and I still see visible pathogens & film-like in every single one of my bowel movements. I still feel this crawling sensation, although not at all as intense as it was a year ago. My question is: is it possible that I can feel the pathogens moving as they are being pulled out of my body? Have you seen patients who took this long to detox? Any advice is much appreciated! It currently feels like I'm still so far from being well. Zita: Hi, What about illnesses like eating compulsive disorders or Bulimia? Can they provoke adrenal insufficiency or hypothyroidism? Kind regards, Zita Catherine: Hi Stephen. I've been lifting for 8 years. I was a swimmer growing up. In college I went from 140-105 lbs in three years by running and eating a paleo diet. I was about 6% body fat. I gained 20 lbs by eating 2700 of a paleo diet calories in 2017. I started intuitive eating. Mid 2020, I randomly started to gain weight. I tried cutting my calories and I started binge eating as a result. I gained 50# in 8 months. I was getting debilitating migraines with aura 2019-2020. I haven't had a period since 2018. I started cutting with a coach in March of 2021. We reversed to 2300 calories and went down from there. I lost 12 lbs and plateaued in July. We tried going lower. I went down to 1200 calories (still paleo) and still did not lose weight. I believe my hormones are messed up and the binge eating is coming back. My digestion sucks and I have to take linzess. I don't know what to do at this point. I am sitting at 5'5” 156-158 lbs, 25/26% body fat based on Dexa. I still have no period. My mood and my energy are all over the place. I take progesterone but it doesn't do anything. Any tips on where to go from here? I want to get back to 140#. Cassandra: Hi Dr. Cabral, Since probably November, I've started noticing tiny bumps on my eyelid. They have only appeared on the top lid of my right eye. It's not like a stye that I've seen people get on the main surface of the eyelid; they show up below the lash line, like where the two lids meet when you blink. They're the same color as the rest of my skin and can be scraped away with my fingernail. They don't hurt, but I'm just wondering what would cause this and if it's a sign of something I should be concerned about. Thank you.
