Elizabeth Benton is known as a health and nutrition guru, but to me, she is more of a "mindset guru." She is someone who has dug herself out of being $130,000 in debt, and has lost (and kept off )150 lbs. My audience from the Logical Weight Loss podcast told me I HAD to read her book, Chasing Cupcakes (get it for free on Audible), and once I finished her book, I checked out her Primal Potential podcast and downloaded all of her episodes. I was thrilled when she agreed to come on the show and explain how podcasting has boosted her business. We also got a bit carried away with our discussion and we run a little long in this episode. Also, STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT around 55 minutes in — we mark our podcast as explicit anyway, but we want you to know that the C-word is used quite a bit. While we're comfortable saying it, not everyone is comfortable hearing it. We want to be respectful to listeners by giving you an advanced warning if this offends you. Emily is doing Maintenance Mode and doing her thing in her plateau. She can see her progress but still getting comfortable with her “new” body. We’re transitioning the show to be less about looking at the scale, but more about trying to get healthy. John’s worried about getting “stuffocated” by brisket and corn bread. John’s going back to more compression on his legs and the whooshie pill again. What was the last vegetable you ate? Usually when Emily’s in a funk, she’ll ask herself that. Even though Emily finds she doesn’t have to count calories, she still realizes that eating healthy will make Future-Emily happy. John’s thinking of trying yoga! We have a nice big yoga discussion and Emily geeked out because this is her favorite form of movement. John likes to use this podcast as a form of therapy, Emily uses her journal for the same reason. Being able to hear or see your own words can help you get a lot of clarity into what you truly feel. John’s best form of dealing with the news is to find the humor in it, and then the internet arguments start. We have some great #WinningWednesday posts, and we’re putting some new prompts in the group! Gratitude is the Attitude! Emily became a certified life coach  — and will soon be certified in mindfulness, as well! Dut-dut! We talk a bit about podcast editing and our workflows toward the end. If you ever wondered what podcast editors do, you might enjoy it! We talk about being people pleasers, both in our work and in our own heads with our self-esteem. STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT! What happens when you go on vacation while doing Intermittent Fasting? Well, Emily found out on her big family vacation! In fact, it’s a whirlwind of a story, which includes Emily’s actual ideal vacation of driving for hours in nature, calling on her “boot and rally” days from college to get her through taking too many vitamins on an empty stomach, and Couch Jeans from the Universe. Wow. Are these show notes or the back of a family comedy from the ‘80s VHS? Meanwhile, while Emily was away, John spent time with his girlfriend and then ran amok the rest of the time. But it wasn’t an all-at-once thing. It happened gradually. But now, since he’s had to be accountable on the show, he has decided to create a 5-step plan for himself and can hopefully find some local groups to help out. (Suggestions welcome!) Call in your WINS or RANTS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 In This Episode: Emily is back from a family vacation and, boy, was it interesting! Disneyland, Universal, California and back and feeling like it was straight out of National Lampoon. (OK, no dead relatives on the car.) Best way to rid yourself of Mom Guilt? Being *those* parents on a plane with a screaming child. Emily and her husband were those parents. Eek!  But Diet Guilt? Apparently, that’s a thing, as Emily finds out. But because of sickness going through everyone else, she decided to take Zicam outside of her eating window. Because being healthy on a family vacation is probably the best reason to break a fast. SPOILER ALERT: Turns out, it didn’t deter her weight loss at all! :) Are you a Disney food person? Emily loved the food there! “You’re a mom! Come on! College has trained us for this. Boot & Rally!” — When you tell yourself you don’t have the flu, you just took too many vitamins. Even writing these show notes, our sleep schedules are still wonky! Humans are so weird! Seriously! Another exception to Emily’s eating window. Good hibachi. But not California pizza. Sorry, California. Emily loves her shoes she wore to Disneyland. In case you’re curious, they’re Sketchers with Memory Foam. Would you wear “Couch Jeans”? Seriously. But the Couch Jeans from the Universe did provide a wonderful belt for the jeans Emily brought and found out were too big. Emily also had the win of getting down to her wedding weight! But her dress fit completely differently. Please do not send in your theories “You’re gonna wash that story right out of those jeans.” —  John After John’s girlfriend left, he was on a muck and continued. More unhealthy choices fell into the cart, bigger portions were being made, and John knew he was in trouble.  John heard a podcast from a YouTuber Bridget Phetasy  John’s 5-Step Plan: Get back to Intermittent Fasting Get a good breakfast. Slowly start reducing any sugar and carbs. There has to be more exercise. Be more proactive and accountable. John also noticed that he’s been bullying himself when he got on the scale. But we know if we have one bad week, it’s just a week. It’s not our entire life. John also talks about an article (linked below) about Food Addiction and he’s looking for support in his area. “There’s so much shame in being a food addict, that people don’t go. We suffer in silence.”  — John John was doing well, but then started gambling and “had outs” — if you know poker, you’ll love John’s analogy! We’re learning how to make these health changes to work for our lifestyle. But let’s get positive! The #WinningWednesday posts get us back into our silly mood. Thank you to our friend Dave Jackson for shouting us out in Podcast Magazine! Woo-hoo! Let us know where you listen! Take a photo of where you are and post it in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group! There are these other podcasters who I'm pretty sure are buying their audience. They're spouting their numbers, and they're gigantic. How am I supposed to compete with somebody like that? I totally understand that question. Here are some things to consider: You Can't Compete Because its a good visual. How would a seventeen-year-old boxer compete against the champion who has held the title for six years? You don't put that kid in the ring. He's going to get killed. The experience, the stamina, he just isn't ready. He is completely out of his league. But I've Been Podcasting For Three Years But Dave, I've been podcasting for three years. You say that in some cases, you know people who are really starting to make a difference with their podcast at three years mark. To this I say"Uh-huh," but here are some things that we need to think about. We never know what's going on behind the scenes with a podcast. You might have a job (or two) and a spouse and some kids. The other podcast may not have any of those. Can you imagine how much free time you would have to promote if you didn't have any other activities and could focus on your podcast 100% of the time? So if you look at podcasters from the outside, there's a person with a podcast here, and another podcaster over there and you think they are the same and they are not. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. They might have a background in selling and your background is in teaching. Radiolab thanked 25 people at the end of their show. I am an army of one. Can I compete? In 2015ish I was up for a Podcast Movement Podcast Award and one of the shows in my category was Reply All.  I was competing against them. I've also had my Logical Weight Loss podcast compete against Jillian Michaels. Can we compete? Yes. The minute you turn on the microphone you are competing. Some of the things these teams of 25 use you don't need (original music?). While great production is like icing on a cupcake, if its all icing (and no cupcake) that doesn't work (see serial season two). The Two Things That Kill a Podcast BABIES Babies are so selfish. It's all about them. All they scream is feed me, wipe my butt, I want a nap. That can really get on your nerves (kidding). COMPARTING YOUR PODCAST TO OTHERS When you say "how do I compete" at the hear you are comparing your show to others, and that can seriously do nasty things to your content. If you ever feel yourself comparing yourself - STOP. STOP COMPARING YOUR SHOW TO OTHERS. You need three things to create good content: Your attitude Your health The support of those around you (see this episode for a deep dive into this subject). There is no competition I am a co-host on the Podcasters Roundtable with Daniel J. Lewis and Ray Ortega. Technically both of these people are my "competition" but they are not. Why? Because you can listen to me on Monday,  Daniel on Tuesday, and Ray on Wednesday. As long as you deliver value, you're safe and don't have to worry. You Can't Buy An Audience You can buy an opportunity for people to hear your show, but you can't pay them to listen. Your podcast needs to provide value so they will come back because they want more. Holly Barey is beautiful. In 2004 they put her in a Catwoman suit, spent a million dollars to my $82 million (a loss of 18 million). On Rotten Tomatoes the movie has a ranking of 9 out of 100 with 197 people voting. In 2009 Disney worked on a movie called John Carter based on a popular book. According to Wikipedia is the most expensive movie ever created. It was a super popular book. It's kind of a sci-fi fantasy thing. It had a young, hot actor from Friday Night Lights, which was a very popular TV show here in the States.  Yeah, they lost $200 million on that movie You cannot buy an audience. And upon the release,  it received a mixed critical reception. In other words, it wasn't any good. There are great visuals. It had a great soundtrack. It had great action sequences. But the biggest criticism was toward the characterization and this thing called the plot that movies have, and you kind of need a good plot, you need a story. It's the content. It's delivering value. And apparently, this movie did not deliver value because it lost them $200 million. And I remember seeing all the ads for this movie, that all the promotion. Before You Start Spending Money to Grow Your Podcast I see a lot of people who say, "I'm not getting enough downloads and they turned to Facebook ads or advertising an overcast or Spotify or Castro (all podcast listening apps). They are trying to get the word out about their show. You can buy eyeballs/earholes but you can't buy an audience because an audience is someone who comes back for more. Do What Your Big Networks Can't Answer every email (in my travels big shows don't do this) Get your audience on the phone. In the book Superfans (and in the Colin Morgan Interview on Podcast Juinkes) Pat Flynn and Colin Morgan talk about reaching out to random members of their audience via the phone (you can get a free Google Voice number, or Podcast Voicemail to mask your real phone number). How do you provide great content? You know who your audience is. How do you know what they want? You talk to them. You are a Jetski, they are a cruise ship. You can change your content in record time. They can't. You are much more flexible. They are not. You need to identify your weaknesses and your strengths. You also need to identify your "competition's" strengths and weaknesses and don't try to cover the same area whey they will unquestionably squash you. Go to where they are. In some cases, if a show is so big they can't go out in public. You can, and while you're there you can get feedback on how to make your show better. Be sure to poll your audience. This can be as simple as "what do you like about the show, what do you wish I would do differently?" If you want to ask, "How did you learn about the podcast" so you can do more of that. There is More Than One Way To Measure Success Keep in mind there are more ways to measure success than downloads. These includes: Is your show successful (are you achieving your "why?" Comments on your website Email responses Social marketing interactions Business metrics (new customers) The Right Podcast Equipment Webinar On February 26th there is a free online webinar at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/webinar where we will go over podcast equipment and the best option for you. At the School of Podcasting,   we show you in videos how to export your show in the proper format. We show you how to order the right plan for your podcast so your media host matches your strategy. We help you podcast frustrating free. Join today at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/start The New Academy of Podcasting Let's start off with the positive. Wondery, a company with 82 employees and revenues (according to growjo.com) of around 15 million per year organized a new "Academy of Podcasters" and will launch a Golden Mic awards in 2021. Per their website, "The Academy is professionally run by an Executive Director and an Account Manager.  These roles are overseen by a volunteer Board of Governors who set the strategic vision and goals of the organization. 17 Founding Members will establish the organization and guide its initial creation with a goal of 1) moving The Golden Mics into a key recognition position and 2) encouraging growth and networking of the Academy and the industry. Members are individuals in the podcast industry who are part of one of the Academy’s Peer Groups; each Peer Group will vote on its respective categories for The Golden Mics."  So it's great that big companies with big budgets are going to be promoting podcasting. This is a good thing. Someone Needs to Learn How to Google The companies listed above need to learn how to do some Google searches. When you come in with a "We've arrived" mentality, you can easily offend those who have already been here working in the trenches. I mean who do you think you are the pilgrims? The larger media companies keep saying things that seem to just ignore history. For example, an article that came out THIS WEEK stated that " Born in the halls of public radio, podcasting has emerged as one of the fastest-growing businesses in media over the past few years." Podcasting was NOT born in the halls of public radio. It was born in a hotel room where Dave Winer and Adam Curry met. In the past, I've just let them roll off m back, but I remember someone from one of these companies who stated there weren't any women podcasters in the early years (completely erasing people like Mignon Fogerty and Murr Raferty. Who can forget Steve Jobs referring to podcasting as "Amateur Hour." So when I approached Hernan Lopez the founder and CEO of Wondery that there HAS BEEN a  “completely peer-based, not for profit, fully representative" awards show and I had won such an award he apologized. I'm Not Saying Get Off My Lawn Lopez was at an educational conference stating a lack of education. I'm not saying get off my lawn. I'm saying Marc Maron didn't invent podcasting (nor did Serial) and if you want me to greet you with open arms, it would be much easier if you would stop kicking me in the balls. To the best of my knowledge, the Adamy of podcasters which controls the Hall of Fame is still in existence. It hasn't had a ceremony since 2018 due to a lack of sponsorship. This is sad. While some may feel this is just a bunch of friends slapping each other on the back, if you do some research that it's not just old white guys but women and people of color (granted the majority of the recipients is middle-aged white guys because when podcasting first started THOSE WERE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE PODCASTING. So I look forward to seeing the spotlight the new academy will point at podcasting, and just ask them to quite saying things that make use feel invisible or worse, erase the past. Sam, John’s girlfriend, is coming into town! Yay! And the Super Bowl is coming up, so let’s talk about that food! Emily’s favorite cupcake place has a Buffalo Chicken Cupcake! Would you try it? Are you ready for the best way to eat a cupcake? Cupcake Sandwich! There’s a new “Biggest Loser!” and we get to hear John’s real thoughts on Jillian Michaels. John Judge-mingo might be another alias for John, lol. If someone can’t find you attractive how you are, they are not the person for you. — Great advice from John. Emily mothers John and tells him he doesn’t have time. You’re welcome, future John! Big shout-out to Wellness While Walking by Coach Carolyn. I loved the tip from the podcast about adding more vegetables and LOVES Everything But the Bagel Seasoning on them! Wow! John gives some Dude Cooking lessons from his InstantPot. But, boy, do we have issues with making eggs sometimes. Emily last time, this time John! Emily has an Ask a Skinny Person moment because she’s not used to having her butt hurt from sitting on a bony/less-fatty butt. Emily has started doing affirmations out loud and they really do make a difference. John makes an appointment to see a neurologist for his concussions from years ago. We couldn’t get on Facebook for the Live Show, bu we still recorded. We actually recorded on Thanksgiving, before the feast, which worked out well for the weigh-in. John has some big news for us  —he has been cleared by his therapist for weight-loss surgery! Yay! He also gives us a quick Dude Cooking recipe for vegetable soup and we talk about getting more vegetables in, even though it’s been too cold (for Emily) for a salad lately. From John and Emily, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and we hope you extend grace to yourself. It’s a very eating-centric time of year and people tend to beat themselves up the most. Big congratulations to John, his mental health has been cleared to get the bariatric surgery! Now it’s just a matter of hitting a goal weight. What is with our kids trying to kill us?! Emily ate more vegetables this week, even though it’s been too cold for salads. Dude Cooking vegetable soup recipe: three bags of frozen vegetables in a crock pot with chicken broth. Do you like playing with food in your teeth? We referred back to Harriet Morris, Emily’s eating coach and her games to avoid binge-eating. Are you an Aldi fan? They have a lot of gluten-free stuff! John is comparing the benefits of Intermittent Fasting vs. Keto. It’s awesome that food manufacturers add more information to the package to help us make easier decisions. But the more we find out about nutrition and food information, the more informed we can be about what we put in our bodies. The memes in our Facebook group are awesome! We love when you post them because they always make us laugh! John plans the next few weeks of weight loss. Have you heard of sous vide cooking? A big thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards. We didn’t win, but we are thrilled to have been nominated! John has been learning to sit with his feelings, at the urging of his therapist who he has been seeing to get ready for bariatric surgery. And we’re finding out that sitting with our feelings and trying not to go into the fight-or-flight response is much harder than just trying to fight them. But it’s necessary for true weight-loss and to keep from sabotaging ourselves. Emily is dealing with Shark Week (what we call the week of her period) on top of weeks of sickness in the house and her weight-loss has been temporarily put on hold. But we have faith that we can make it through and we know it won’t always be like this, even though when we’re in the throes of it all, it can seem overwhelming and never-ending. But luckily, we have some amazing #WinningWednesday posts this week! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! In This Episode: Thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards! And congratulations to Sex with Emily who won in the Health & Fitness category! Do you love or hate “The Office”? John hates it! John’s learning to sit with his feelings, and this is an important step in our weight-loss journey. Mindfulness sounds “easy,” but when it comes to validating your own feelings and realizing the stories we tell ourselves, it’s incredibly difficult to learn. Both John and Emily have ADHD and there is a side of ADHD that comes with anxiety and possibly spiraling. We are both without our usual vices, so we have to find a whole new way to cope with our feelings. It’s still new to us and we’re still getting used to it. Emily is so sick of the generation wars. Stop it! Sorry we didn’t quite stay on the topic of weight-loss this week. We know how to diet — but we are learning to deal with the emotions and that’s the hard part. Did you know John’s stage name? John Jamingo! How we’re getting out our thoughts: Emily keeps morning pages and has a release jars for scraps of paper of her worries, and John has started recording his thoughts into the microphone. Oh, and it’s Shark Week for Emily and she is in hibernation mode, plus being sick and tired of being sick and tired. In case you need to hear this: You won’t always feel like this. This is only temporary. This is not the rest of your life. Also, no one has it all figured out. Did you know that checking something off your to-do list releases dopamine? How “Emily” is that? Emily gives some of her tips for productivity and chasing that dopamine. Comparison is the thief of joy! We love memes in the Facebook group! Feel free to share ALL your victories over there! Emily’s Weekly Weigh-In summed up: I’m not even sorry! John helps us come back during our Weigh-In! Later, Weighters! But the annoyance of it meant he was able to avoid overeating! In case you’re new to the show, Intermittent Fasting means only eating during a certain number of hours every day. We’re reparenting ourselves and negotiating with ourselves, but it’s working! At-Home-Emily hates to cook; Out-Shopping-Emily forgets this and buys vegetables that just go bad. Can you relate? Our hearts go out to the family and friends of those affected by the recent shootings in Texas and Ohio. The reason we talk about this on a show supposedly about weight loss is because it affected both of our stress levels, which affect our eating and dieting habits. John lost his car keys and was “stranded” in his house for three days! That’s one way to avoid the drive-thru! Our ADD/ADHD is also on overdrive lately. John had a good time out to eat with his daughter and had a little slip off the diet, but he is aware of it and is growing so much since last year! In This Episode: This comes out New Year’s Eve! Welcome to you if you are new to the podcast! For those who are new, John does Keto and Intermittent Fasting, Emily does Intermittent Fasting. We talk about eating in our “window” — This is in regards to Intermittent Fasting and the hours during the day we allow ourselves to eat. We both do about 16-8 or 18-6: 16 hours fasting/8 hours of eating or 18 hours fasting/6 hours eating. We recorded this a few days after Christmas and we got on the scale and dealt with the number like champions (sorta). Warning for those who may not like food-talk: We discuss cookies toward the beginning. The Christmas-New Year’s Slump is a challenge for us! John’s special lady is coming! Yay! Emily would love the energy of New Year’s Day at least once a month. John signs up for a meal planning website with recipes and shopping lists to help him with keto. We walk through The Keto Cycle Diet website quiz. With kids and dieting: The Days are Long; The Years/Weeks are Short. We talk about some of our goals for 2019. John wants to learn some more “Dude Cooking” techniques. Emily talks about the fresh egg test! We talk about our health-related Christmas gifts. Carb Hangovers are real! Shopping while hungry is bad — not just grocery shopping. Emily got a super duper scale for Christmas! Weight loss is NOT a straight-line. There are ups and downs. We need to trust the process, though! We relate weight-loss numbers to podcasting numbers — sorry for the behind-the-scenes. Emily wants her Power Chin back! Today I learn something from Dave Jackson’s Logical Weight Loss podcast: calories burned depends on, among other things, total body weight. So I’ll be getting more accurate information from my fitness watch now as I periodically update my weight in the app. The end of the “Biggest Loser” contest at work, which I am going to win by the way, is so close I can taste it, and I plan to immediately resume a more reasonable weight management diet and exercise plan after the final weigh-in. I saw, in the grocery store, a Weight Watchers brand scale that provides BMI, body fat percentage, weight of fat and lean body mass, and possibly even more. So for cheap, you can get this information and track it. As body composition, not weight, is a healthier way to judge overall fitness, I think this is a valuable thing to have. Equally valuable to me is having a log in which I track my caloric intake. An official “Hello!” to all my Swedish listeners, and thanks for tuning in! Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com I was a speaker and attendee at the Podfest Multimedia Expo this past February in Orlando, Florida. www.Podfestexpo.com/2019 On the last day of Podfest, we had a classic "roast" for one of podcasting's pioneers.....Dave Jackson! Dave Jackson hosts "The School of Podcasting," which is a fantastic podcast, which teaches you how to podcast. Dave has been podcasting for over 12 years! I know.....I didn't even know what a podcast was 3 years ago! Now, I'm hosting two shows! Anyway........Dave Jackson has another podcast (he has like 15 different shows) called "Logical Weight Loss."  During the "roast," I was really giving it to Dave, because he has had this weight loss podcast for several years, but he doesn't lose weight! The roast was all in good fun. My fellow "roasters" had the room rolling in laughter. Dave took all the jokes and jabs really good. He's an awesome guy and a good friend! After the ceremonies were over, Dave came up to me and told me he was so glad I was kidding him about his weight loss show during the "roast."  Dave said I inspired him to really get healthy and to lose the weight he's been trying to lose the past few years.  Then later on, one of my other podcast buddies - Jonathan Oakes, who is the host of the world known "Trivial Warfare" podcast; comes up to me and says I inspired him during the "roast" and he wants to lose weight. I was like.....cool! Good for Jonathan. Jonathan had me and Glenn "the geek," from Horse Radio Network on Trivial Warfare. It was me and Glenn against Jonathan.  I had previously considered myself to be pretty darn good at trivia. I would do excellent on Jeopardy or at playing Trivial Pursuit. When I got on Trivial Warfare......I felt like I was as dumb as a rock! I was losing my mind! I made such stupid mistakes! You have to listen to the episode. You'll laugh your butt off! Here's the link to the episode: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/tw117-fuggedaboudit/id964623770?i=1000385667149&mt=2 Then even later on....one of my other buddies, Niel Guilarte, the director of "The Messengers - A Podcast Documentary," and the "All Things Post" Podcast starts talking to me about his weight loss journey. Niel tells me he really wants to hit his weight loss goal of 100 pounds, and that I inspired him from the "roast." If I knew I was going to be so inspiring, I would have had an entire session about weight loss at the conference! I wanted to help my buddies on their weight loss journey, so I asked each of them how I could help. Each one of them said they wanted to be "accountable." I brought up the idea of a "challenge," and that was all I had to say. Dave Jackson, Jonathan Oakes and Niel Guilarte are in! The Weight Loss Nation Podcaster's Challenge is officially on! Three men....three Podcast icons.....are fighting for their life to get healthy! Here's the criteria I have set. Each contestant will be measured in the following three areas: 1.  Blood Pressure      If a contestant has a blood pressure reading of          120/80 or better.....the contestant will receive          five (5) points.      If a contestant has a blood pressure reading of 122/82 up to 128/88, the contestant will receive two (2) points.     If a contestant has a blood pressure reading of 130/90 or higher.....NO points will be awarded.     In fact, I'll probably call in the paramedics! 2. BMI - Body Mass Index     Body Mass Index is a formula that takes the height and weight of the person and the percentage of fat in their bodies and awards a range.     A Body Mass Index of 18.5 - 25.0 is considered to be "normal."    If a contestant's Body Mass Index is between 18.5 and 25.0 they will be awarded five (5) points.    If a contestant's Body Mass Index is between 25.1 -29.9, the contestant will be awarded one (1) point.    Finally, if a contestant's Body Mass Index is 30.0 or higher, no points will be awarded, since they are considered "obese." 3.  AC1 Blood Test The AC1 Blood Test measures the level of Glucose in your blood over the past two months. An AC1 level of 5.6 or less is considered to be "normal." If a contestant has an AC1 range between 5.6 or less, they will receive 10 points. An AC1 level of 5.7 - 6.4 indicates "Pre-Diabetes." If a contestant has an AC1 range between 5.7 - 6.4, they will receive one (1) point. Finally, an AC1 level of 6.5 or higher, this is an indication of Diabetes and no points will be given.  In fact, I'll be calling the paramedics in again! The most points a contestant can achieve is 20. If by some chance....there is a tie.....we will have a playoff...... The contestants will have to do "sit ups" on stage! The most sit ups in a minute will determine the overall winner! I haven't figured out what the prizes will be....maybe something good.....maybe a "Zonk."  Heck...maybe both! Either way.....the contestants have until March 9, 2019, to get healthy. Podfest Multimedia Expo will be from March 7 - March 9, 2019 in beautiful, Orlando, Florida. If you're a podcaster, someone who thinks they should be a guest on a podcast or who just wants to hang out with podcasters..... Then join me, Dave Jackson, Jonathan Oakes and hundreds of other podcasters at the Podfest Multimedia Expo. Here's the link to get more information: www.Podfestexpo.com/2019   The Weight Loss Nation If you don't know how to start the journey towards a long-term healthy lifestyle, keep listening to the Weight Loss Nation Podcast. If you've listened to this podcast you know last year I lost 30 lbs. I looked so much better, felt better, and just about the time I was going to reach my goal, I started reverting back to my old habits. I thought I would coast across the finish line. I listened to 25 Days: A Proven Program to Rewire Your Brain, Stop Weight Gain, and Finally Crush the Habits You Hate - Forever by Drew Logan (Author), Myatt Murphy (Author). In the book, he talks about how we often approach weight loss the same way we do a test in High School. We cram for the test, and the minute we hand in our paper we wipe away that information. I am also listening (I rarely read, I listen to most of the books) to The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Busines and in that book he explains how you don't get new habits, you replace old habits with new ones. A key point I learned (so far as I'm only into chapter three) is that the old habits are still there. Think of this like a river. Over years the banks of the river and the twist and turns are well defined. If you come along and throw up a dam to re-route the river the old river doesn't cease to exist. There just isn't any water in it. So if you decide to take away the dam, it's very easy for the water to go right back into the old pathway of the river. Think of how hard it was to build the dam, and re-route the river, and think of how easy it would be to have the water to return to its old river path. This is why we have to be very careful when we decide to have "just one" of something. That can be the crack in the dam that starts the whole negative ball in motion. When this happens, we need to look at what is triggering us, and eliminate the trigger, or come up with another solution. I'm not sure who or why, but I started going to Walmart on Friday nights. I live alone, and I guess I figure most people are out starting the weekend, and it would be less crowded. This is a Walmart with groceries, and they have a decent selection so I often go there to stock up so I'm ready for my Sunday night "cook a bunch of stuff for the week" routine. There is a Chipotle and a Dairy Queen right in front of Walmart. One week I had a good week, and my weight was going down. I decided that Chipotle was a better bad choice, and went in and had my chicken tacos with lettuce, cheese, and mild salsa. I had a coke. Stike one for getting a coke. Then after the meal, the chicken always leaves me thirsty (probably due to the spices and salt content). Instead of getting a water, or even worse, a coke, one week I went to Dairy Queen and got an oreo cookie blizzard. The next day the scale didn't go up! WOW! What a positive reward. I started adding Chipotle and dairy queen to my weekly routine. The bad news is, the scale started going the wrong way. Also, the blizzards at Dair Queen started to inch into Chocolate Frosty's at Wendy's. The dam had broken and here I was back at my old habits. In the past, I've chosen to go to a different store to avoid the whole situation. That's kind of a bite off your face to spite your nose situation. I wanted to look at what was the trigger? Was it Walmart and just seeing the Dairy Queen? Maybe. In The Power of Habit, the author mentions that Cinnabon locations in malls are typically not in the food court. Why? Because they want the smell to waft down the hall and entice you so that as soon as you SEE the store, you're already having a craving. What is a healthier solution? There are a few. I could drink water, and after the Chipotle, drink more water to get the spices out of my mouth, or pop a breath mint. If the spices make me crave ice cream, then find a new solution. The obvious option is to NOT go to Chipotle. I could eat a healthy meal at home (the whole point of chipotle is to not go grocery shopping hungry) and then go Grocery shopping.   The 25 Days Method There is a set of eating plans (high protein, low carb - what a shock). Why I like this idea is you focus on your next meal. Pick your protein, pick your vegetable (or carb). Drink a glass of water. Do it right, and you give yourself 100%. You do this for all your meals and also for your workout, and you score yourself. If you can get 85% or better for the day, you're headed in the right direction. Obviously, 100% is better, but we all know life happens and you can't be perfect all the time. I LOVE the focus on your next meal. Then you start to need something to keep track of things. On odd days (what he calls Primary Days) you each three meals, and two snacks (one snack after breakfast and lunch). On even days you get one snack after lunch. The timing is you are supposed to wait three hours after every meal to have a snack and wait two hours after a snack to have a meal. He keeps telling you how simple it is, and to a point some of it is. The deeper you go, the more you need a tracking sheet. As I listened to this book through hoopla (a service tied to your library to allow you to check out audio and books) I don't have access to a PDF resource listed in the book. I even went to the publisher's website listed in the book (where you provide a password for a pdf). The pdf is not listed (BOO!). As an audiobook, this book gets boring as about 50% of the book is him either explaining how the 25 days plans is the best plan, etc. Then he reads a bunch of recipes, and that is followed by someone describing exercises. Drew Logan breaks it down into three steps Disrupt Existing Behaviours Simple Repetition Make sure you have cues to trigger the positive action. Taking a Cue From Alcoholics Annonymous Alcoholics replace their habit of drinking by replacing it with a healthier habit. If they were going to a bar for friendship and to battle loneliness, they now get that from their sponsor. If they were drinking to forget or to cope with something that was bothering them, they now can get help through therapy. Those needs for friendship, or coping with trauma don't go away. They just find a healthier solution. If I were to sit on a couch and talk to a therapist I would probably say I still have not finished the grieving process from my mother's death when I was 24. I became a bit of a workaholic as I realized that we only have so much time on the planet. I want to leave a legacy, and when I feel I'm not making an impact, I stress out a bit. As more of my family members die (I lost a cousin this week due to a motorcycle accident), my mortality smack me in the face. It's kind of stupid, If I think about the death of my older brother (who is healthy as a horse) I stress out. It's stupid as I'm worrying about things I have no control over. I say this to give you the idea of the things that add stress to our lives that in the end there are probably healthier ways to deal with them than running to the fridge. What Motivated Me This Week I spoke at an event a month ago, and I saw some video from the event. I have a classic "Dad Bod." I refuse to let this happen. I am going to be the exception NOT the rule. So I've printed these images out and put them on my fridge. A reminder of what snacking, etc, leads to. I also have one in my car. I'm not looking for a six pack. I just don't want to look like I'm smuggling watermelon under my shirt. I will be speaking at an event in February 2018. My birthday falls on the day of the event. I want to hit my goal weight by my birthday. To do this, I need to lose 1.2 lbs a week. Not a super hard goal (.18 lbs per day), but something I will need to focus on. To help me see if I'm on track, I made a worksheet in Google Sheets (you can use Microsoft Excel) to show if I'm ahead or behind schedule. I even added a chart.   In the Logical Losers Weight Loss Club, I show you how to create these spreadsheet (even if you don't know spreadsheets). You can have access to the Logical Losers Patreon/Facebook group for as little as $1 a month. Because of My Podcast: Lee Silverstein Lee Silverstein is the man behind the Colon Cancer Podcast and the Color Cancer Network was able to get press passes to a very cool event in his area. Cool Image Tools For Your Podcast I've been working on rebuilding PodcastingResources.com and in the process finding that some resources are gone, and other have been updated. Also in the process of moving items, I've had podcaster inform me of new sources. Today I want to talk about some resources you might know and a few might not when it comes to creating graphics and images. Canva.com Canva.com was my favorite tool for a simple but powerful tool. It included photographs you could include for free, or in some cases $1. It has a set of tutorials to get you up to speed and you can create some great looking images for free (or next to fo free) Pixlr.com Pixlr.com is another graphic program in the cloud. It doesn't have access to photos and such, but it can edit the photos you have, and it's a great tool if you need to resize an image, especially if your artwork for Apple Podcasts is the right dimensions, but the file size is too big as you can have pixlr.com compress it. Vectr.com Vectr.com is a new program to me, and from I've seen is the most powerful graphics program that is 100% free. It works on any platform, and it also has a cloud version. As it is super powerful there is a bit of a learning curve, but if you took the time to go through the tutorials (and they have quite a few) you could make some great looking graphics. Adobe Spark Adobe Spark is my new favorite tool. It has one drawback that I will hit on in a minute. You simply click on what you are trying to make (twitter, facebook, Instagram, etc) and pick a design, choose some colors, spin a wheel to scroll through some fonts, and share your image. So what is the one drawback? Most of these other tools allow you specify custom sizes, but from what I've seen there is no way to specify a file size. So what I do is if I need a square image, I go into adobe spark, create an Instagram image, and then resize it using Pixlr.com   New Twists on Old Tools Ecamm Call Recorder is a great tool for Recording Skype, they recently launched Ecamm Live which is meant to record Facebook Live broadcasts that costs $29.95 and has some of the same features as wirecast (but that costs $500). This cost $29.95. Here is a tutorial. A New Podcasting Microphone For Half the Price I've been a huge fan of the Audio Technica ATR2100 microphone. It sounds great. It has both USB and XLR inputs (so it can plug directly into the computer or into a mixer) and it has a lifetime warranty. As I write this, that microphone is $67 the ATR2005 is a slightly more stylish version for $79 Well SP on the Better Podcasting Show found the Knox Cardoid USB Microphone for $40. This microphone looks and sounds very much like the 2100/2005 (it looks like a 2005 with the 2100 switch). There is even a bundle where you get the microphone and a boom arm for $69. When You Step on A Listener's Toes In my twelve years of podcasting, I may have had someone send a nastygram once or twice. This is why I was so surprised to get a nasty email calling me a piece of garbage, and another podcaster resorting to name calling and saying how I had no listeners and other false statements. So what do you do? Well, you could load up your anger and hurt and go out attitude a blazin'. From my experience, this typically does not end well.  or Reach out to them and attempt to get an understanding of how your words offended them. Realize this is NOT saying they were wrong for feeling hurt or offended. Everyone is allowed to feel what they feel. Many times when two people are involved in a conversation and someone gets offended chances are the person who did the offended didn't know what they said was so lethal. My Offensive Words On my Logical Weight Loss podcast, I was reading a story about how Americans are giving up on trying to lose weight and accepting being fat. In the article, it mentioned how American Doctors feel they can tell their patients about the dangers of being overweight as they might be accused of "Fat Shaming." This to me makes no sense and stated that if your doctor can't talk about your weight than who can say anything negative. I asked, "What is there no Slut Shaming, no Thief Shaming? What if you have relations with a goat? Is that OK?  To this, I got an email. The subject of the email was F*CK YOU. Here was the message: In your latest podcast, your comment about "slut shaming" and comparing it to "thief shaming" was absolutely disgusting. FUCK YOU, go to hell you piece of garbage. To this I replied: Thank you so much for your feedback. My point was if we don't allow anyone to say a negative thing about anything, isn't that the doorway to anarchy? I would love to have a dialogue about this with you. Can we get on skype? The response I received was simply: GO TO HELL To that, I replied, "Too bad. As a former teacher, I always feel there is room for improvement, and obviously, there is room for me to improve. Good luck with your weight loss journey." If You Stay Open - You Leave the Door Open to Knowledge I appeared on the Podcast Survival Guide podcast with Josh Liston (who is from Austalia) and he explained that while "Slut" is not a great word in America, it is a really, really bad word in Australia ( on the same level as C*NT in the US). In both cases, my remarks on the Logical Weight Loss podcast were somewhat based on my frustration with political correctness (fat people are now horizontally challenged) and what I said was off the cuff, in a slightly over the top manner to make a point. One might guess that Alex's comments were in the same manner. Conclusion In the end with different countries, cultures, languages, etc we are going to inadvertently step on each other's toes. All you can do is apologize that someone feels a certain way, and pursue a dialogue to learn from the experience. Today we have a serious subject that isn't so much about getting more downloads, and new cool gear, but the fact that your podcast can make a difference. I've helped people save money on fear, and help them launch podcasts. I've helped them find ways to grow their audience, and give them insights into creating better content on the Podcast Review Show. I've helped a listener of my Logical Weight Loss podcast lose 100 lbs. None of those compare to the email I received from the producer of Kuldryn's Krypt podcast. Honestly, in September of last year, 2016, I had resolved get my affairs in order and to end my life on Halloween night, the greatest day of the year. I was introduced by complete chance to you. I was on Spreaker, did a search for podcasting and you came up. I chose to listen to you because my birth name is Ryan Jackson and I have a brother name David. Keep in mind I had never heard a podcast prior to this and I have no idea how I or why I was even on Spreaker's website...but I was and there was you were. I am a Patron because you gave me the tools to start my own podcast but more importantly you, YES! YOU! "The Dave Jackson, provided me with something to live for. My podcast isn't great, it isn't even good, BUT IT IS MINE and it provides me with the outlet I need to help other's and once again have a purpose in this world. It is just a very simple fact-if I had not found YOUR podcast when I did, on October 31st, 2017 11:55p.m. a bullet from a Taurus .38 Special would be ending my life. Thank you for never giving up and fighting through...I'm sure through your divorce and the issues with your family it hasn't been easy but Dave, I am will continue to be literal living proof that it's been worth it. Thank you! So today we are going to talk about setting expectations, and crushing it, etc. Suicide Among Entrepreneurs is a Problem We Should Talk About 30% of all entrepreneurs experience depression, according to a study by Dr. Michael Freeman, a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco. Depression among entrepreneurs is way higher than depression among Americans in general, which is estimated at about 7% — although that number could be even higher because of the stigma associated with talking about it. Of the 242 entrepreneurs surveyed, 49% reported having a mental-health condition. Depression was the No. 1 reported condition among them and was present in 30% of all entrepreneurs, followed by ADHD (29%) and anxiety problems (27%). That's a much higher percentage than the US population at large, where only about 7% identify as depressed.   Here are just some examples In May 2015, 31 year old Austen Heinz, CEO of Cambrian Genomics took his own life. In July, 29 year old Faigy Mayer, CEO of Appton jumped off a New York rooftop. 26 year old Aaron Schwartz, a partner at Reddit, hung himself in 2013. 47 year old Jody Sherman, founder of Ecomom shot himself that year. One of his colleagues, 24 year old Ovik Banerjee, followed a year later. 22 year old Ilya Zhitomirskiy, CEO of Diaspora, took his life in 2011. In Las Vegas one project had three suicides. In an article The Downtown Project Suicides: Can the Pursuit of Happiness Kill You?  they mention Jody Sherman (4/13), Ovik Banerjee (1/14), and Matt Berman (4/14) – all people involved in the Vegas Tech phenomenon. Some people are smart enough to see the writing on the wall. Rand Fishkin stepped down as CEO of Moz in part because of his depression.Rand Fishkin In 2010, suicide was the highest cause of death for people aged 15-49, in the developed world. That’s way above death from lung cancer and murder. In 2013 Newsweek pointed out that the suicide rate in America had been increasing since 1999. Why Is This Happening? We get caught up in the should philosophy. I should have more downloads, more sponsors, more whatever. The bad news is your comparing yourself to someone's numbers who are potentially altered. We look at all the people "Crushing It" on Facebook, Twitter, and nobody sees the struggle. Should is fraught with guilt and remorse. It implies that you can’t change things. So when we feel we are "falling Behind" we start to put poison in our bodies in the form of fast food, and other items that have no nutrition. We then cut back on our sleep to prove we are committed. In this instance when you need to be at the top of your game, you are filling it with junk, and robbing it of sleep. This is like buying cheap gas and punching a hole in your gas tank. Eventually the car is going to come to a quick stop. We are told to DREAM BIG, and if we just focus on our dreams they will become a reality. This puts us into an anxious state, and that is NOT the time to be making decisions. Then we all get INSANELY Focused on our launch, and how we are going to come out of the gate at this breakneck speed, but then we are supposed to KEEP this pace. Anything less than a sprint is a lack of dedication. Think of joining a marathon an hour after it started. There is no way to catch up, but if you run the marathon that is still an undeniable feat. It is still something amazing that takes months of preparation, dedication, and is something a small percentage of people could accomplish. Yet you feel bad, because you're comparing yourself to others.   How to Get Help None of this is intended as medical advice. If you need help, there are people waiting for your call, both friends and professionals:1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433)1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255) A new Y Combinator-backed startup, 7 Cups of Tea, is trying to tackle one common problem: the affordability of help. When founders are running out of money for their company, that's rarely when they can shell out for a visit to a psychologist or other mental-health professionals. Tim Ferris talks about this in his latest book and he's mentioned it on his podcast that he has struggled with depression. His advice is to adopt of attitude of gratitude. Thanks to GuyCM for leaving a reivew on iTunes! To get your iTunes reviews e-mailed directly to you go to: creativestudio.academy/mypodcastreviews Dave Jackson is from the School of Podcasting. teaches Microsoft Office. He loves to do classroom training, but also does online training. He is the bridge to get others from where they are to where they want to be. The first thing is "Who is your audience?" and "What do they want to know?" Really get to know who that person is "Why am I getting into podcasting?" Are you looking to get your message out? Just for fun? You need to know the why. It's not "build it and they will come." When you start, your audience is small. It will be your "why" that will get you through. After you figure out who your audience is, go find where they are. Google relevant searches. For Dave's Logical Weight Loss podcast, he searched "top fitness apps" and found several forums. That's where he found his audience. He took some time to interact with them and answer questions. How do you prepare for your podcast? Get a system in place to capture your ideas, like Evernote or your voice recorder. It's a 4-to-1 rule with podcasting (1 minute podcast takes 4 minutes). Try not to do the typical interview with a person. Be realistic about how many downloads you'll get. Have a takeaway for your listener - summary of what was covered. What are some steps for each individual episode Dave uses Feedly.com to capture RSS feeds for different blogs. Use Google Alerts to e-mail you results or deliver via RSS. Use social media like Facebook and Twitter to keep current. Create a folder on your computer to collect files and ideas for upcoming episodes. What are some tips for effectively promote? Make content that is WOW! Figure our where your audience is The key is to make friends with them Have your profile figured out - don't leave it blank or default! Business cards - some with basic contact information, some with specific info about the podcast When you start out, you have to go out and tell people. Take advantage of having a small audience. Have some sample clips on your About page. Then have your iTunes, etc. links. What kind of time commitment could someone expect for promotion? Buffer - batch tweets ahead of time. Always in promotion mode. Maybe a good hour a day, broken up throughout the day. Again, develop the relationships with your audience - they will eventually become your evangelists. It sometimes takes awhile for people to follow though. Money expectations? If you are too strapped for money, don't get into podcasting. There aren't too many hobbies you can do for free. On the otherhand, you don't have to spend $2,000. There are many advantanges of this: You'll be seen as an expert. You'll get to know your customer better. Go in with realistic expectations. Get started and begin reaping the rewards. What to expect at School of Podcasting (creativestudio.academy/sop): Everything you need in one place to start podcasting. Equipment and software recommendations. How to promote your podcast. Access to Dave. In today’s show we talk about the power of podcasting, as I talk about a person who purchased a fitness program after listening to one of my podcasts (and how integrity comes into play). I talk about some cool WordPress themes and some great insights into podcast promotion from Max Flight. Podcast Success Story I have been doing the Logical Weight Loss podcast for three years. I did some podcast consulting for David Greenwalt who turned out to be a fitness guru. He was nice enough to let me check out his Lifestyle University and  I liked what he was doing. He just launched his once a year class Lifestyle 180, and I decide to join and have Dave on my show. It wasn’t a giant commercial, but instead we just provided some facts and let the audience decide if they wanted to join me. The good news is a listener heard my podcast, and immediately signed up (and I earned $56 commission). Cool WordPress Themes (One if Free) In the past, I’ve used Thesis until they updated to version 2 (and I feel they ruined it). I purchased iThemes Builder (which I used in the past) only to find their “Style Manager” had a problem. So I went in search of a drag and drop WordPress theme and I found Pagelines. This at is a free WordPress theme that is free (do a search in your WordPress install for pagelines). The free version has a ton of easy to customize features. The pro version is $139. The Builder Theme is $80 and it allows you to customize the colors, fonts, etc in their Style Manager. Then you can drag and drop your layout. It makes it super easy to design your website. Their are TONS of “Child Themes” that you can get access to and add to your website (A Child Theme is a premade layout and style that can save you time). Max Flight on Podcast Promotion Max flight produces the Airplane Geeks and Podcasting Passion podcasts. Today we talk about how new podcasters learn that creating the podcast is only part of the process. You need to get the word out about your podcast. Everyone always says, “Great Content” is the best tool for growing your audience. I always have said that you need to figure out who your audience is, figure out where they are, and go there and make friends. Then tell them about your podcast. Today Max provides some tips on how you can get your audience involved with helping to spread the word. We hear how he is using Facebook, Questions, and regular segments from his audience into his Airplane Geeks. Max also produces the Podcasting Passion podcast Speaking of podcast promotion, booktourradio.com and refocuspodcast.com to the podcastclicks.com website (a banner exchange program for podcasts only). We had over 14,837,913 impressions last year and we delivered 182,923 clicks to their websites. We ask the question “What is a better use of your time, creating great content or going out and telling people about your show?” Leave your answer in a comment
