His work also ranges widely across history, including early Christianity, Islam and its relationship with the West, intelligence and espionage, the Reformation, the English Civil War, Tsarist Russia and the Soviet Union, the First World War, Communism and the Cold War, and pre-Revolutionary Iran. Orton writes the newsletter It Can Always Get Worse, where he covers contemporary security issues alongside history, religion, intelligence, books, and occasional film reviews. Orton and Razib's conversation begins with his post, The Sojourn of Arculf: An Eyewitness to "Early Islamic" Jerusalem - A Frankish bishop sheds some light on a historical dark age. Their discussion continues with probing the possibility that Islam as we know it truly did not exist any recognizable form before the 690s AD, and that the early "Saracens" as their Christian enemies referred to them were in fact a schismatic group of monotheists whose beliefs were adjacent to that of the Jews. Orton also discusses the role of Muhammad, or rather, the lack of the role of Muhammad, in the early years of the Islamic Caliphate. They also explore the possibility that later commentators largely attributed the negative reputation of Islam's first dynastic Caliphate, the Umayyads, to the reality that they would not recognize them as Muslims. Finally, Orton talks about the reality that some of the layers of text within the Koran seem far older than the time of Muhammad, perhaps by a century or so.

The Sonic Silents film festival opens Thursday at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland. The film composer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Orton recruited over 20 musicians to compose new, original scores for a curated selection of silent films at the inaugural festival that he created. Orton and his fellow musicians will peform the new compositions live in front of audiences inside the 100-year-old theater.    Among the highlights is Buster Keaton’s “The General,” which was filmed in Cottage Grove in 1926. For the film’s and the theater’s centennial anniversary, Orton will premiere an updated score he wrote for the 90th anniversary of “The General.”    Todd Sickafoose, a Eugene-based Tony and Grammy Award-winning producer, composer and bassist will join Orton on stage for the weekend performances. Sickafoose has also contributed an original score for “Daisy Doodad’s Dial,” a 1914 comedy short showing at the festival.    Orton and Sickafoose join us for a preview of Sonic Silents.

For the first time in its four-decade history, the iconic professional wrestling series moves to Sunday, emanating from Atlanta. Cody Rhodes, a superstar with multi-generational ties to the city, headlines the card. Rhodes takes on his WrestleMania rival Randy Orton in a rematch months in the making. (Riverton, WY) – Own your mistakes. Take accountability for yourself. When you have success, share it with others. And fly fish as much as you can. Those were the common themes delivered by former National Football League quarterback Kyle Orton Monday night as he spoke with the Riverton High School football team at the RHS Auditorium. Orton is no stranger to Fremont County. The Iowa-native told County 10 if he could fly fish anywhere in the world, he’d be right here. Kyle has been hitting the water here for the last few days. The exact location he chose not to disclose… we mentioned he’s a true fisherman after all. He accepted an invitation to meet and speak with the RHS student-athletes after a day tracking trout. During a 30 minute pre-practice session he took time to answer questions and sign several autographs. His football journey began in Iowa, which led to Indiana for college, becoming a Purdue Boilermaker. Purdue’s Head Coach at the time was a legend in the Cowboy State, Joe Tiller. After four years under Tiller, Kyle was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2005. Eventually, he’d play three seasons with the Denver Broncos, a year with the Kansas City Chiefs, two with the Dallas Cowboys and finished his career in 2014 a Buffalo Bill. Since retiring, he’s remained active in football as a high school coach for his Iowa alma mater. His favorite leader to play with was Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. His favorite piece of advice is to find other people that work hard at the same things you do and push each other. Perhaps most interestingly though, he was presented with the question, “if you could go back in time and play one more game at any level, where would you go?” Orton thought for a second, skipped being an NFL celebrity or a college football success and said, “honestly I’d go back to high school and play with my friends.” Doubling down with, “there’s just something special about playing with your buddies.” Kyle summed up the session by telling the Wolverines to take practice one day at a time, “try to win each day. Practice hard.
