It's not a Kiwi summer without Six60, and the county's highest selling live band is rolling on. They've dropped their latest single, ‘We Made It', coming in the wake of their bestselling Australian performance at the Sydney Opera House. They'll also have the honour of being the first live act to perform at the new One NZ Stadium in Christchurch and are curating a new country and roots music festival, taking place this summer in Matakana. Lead singer Matiu Walters told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's just a one-day festival at the moment, but they have plans to grow. “It's definitely a tough time for the arts, music, and for everyone really, to be fair,” he said. “We didn't, we never want to kind of just, to like, rest on our laurels.” Over the years they've been performing, Six60 has smashed records, being labelled as the country's first-ever Chart Icon at the 2025 Aotearoa Music Awards, and Walters says their drive stems from their desire to do “cool stuff”. “Our goal was, was always just to write and perform music, and my purpose is to sing and play guitar, and all these things that kind of happened around us,” he told du Plessis-Allan. “We're aspirational dudes.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

(Piano music stops)   Kiersten - Welcome to Ten Things I Like About… I'm Kiersten, your host, and this is a podcast about misunderstood or unknown creatures in nature. Some we'll find right out side our doors and some are continents away but all are fascinating.  This podcast will focus ten, ten minute episodes on different animals and their amazing characteristics. Please join me on this extraordinary journey, you won't regret it. Last week's overview of the tuatara probably made you want them in YOUR backyard, but they are only found in a small section of the world. This week we are going to find out where the tuatara live. The second thing I like about the tuatara is where they are found.  To see a tuatara in the wild you will have to visit New Zealand. They are found on different islands surrounding the main island of New Zealand as well as on the mainland. Those found on the mainland are there due to a reintroduction program begun in 2005.  The islands where you can find tuatara are fairly inaccessible which probably helped save them from extinction. The ones on the mainland were extinct before Europeans ever came to the island.  There are about thirty islands surrounding New Zealand where you can find tuatara today. Those island include Poor Knights Island, Hen and Chickens Island, Little Barrier Island, Cuveir Island, Mercury Island, The Alderman Island, Karewa Island, Plate Island, Moutoki Island, Moutohora Island, and Tiritiri Matangi Island. These are all off the northern coast. Sphenodon punctatus occurs naturally on all of these islands except Moutohora and Tiritiri Matangi Islands where the Northern Tuatara were introduced to help increase their population. Tuatara can also be found on Stephens or Takapourewa Island, Trio Island, Titi Island, The Brothers Island, and Matiu or Somes Island. Sphenodon guntheri occurs naturally on The Brothers Island and was introduced to Titi and Matiu Islands to boost their population. Please excuse any mispronunciations.  A scientific paper published in December of 2012 states that “there are about 32 natural populations of tuatara living on small offshore islands, a few island reintroductions, and at least one reintroduced mainland colony on the North Island [of New Zealand]. Most of the populations include just tens or hundreds of animals, but there are estimated to be at least 30,000 on Takapourewa Island.” End quote. The habitat that tuatara live in is an odd choice for a reptile as the islands are riddled with cliffs and exposed to strong winds. The vegetation is salt and wind tolerant; therefore, are pretty tough plants. The average temperature is below what the typical reptile can tolerate but tuatara are adapted to survive temperatures as low as 45 degrees Fahrenheit.  They spend their days in burrows that are dug by seabirds such as petrels, prions, and shearwaters when they are available or they will dig their own burrows. They also spend time soaking up the sun on the cliffs. Tuatara are more active at night leaving their burrows or basking spots to hunt for food. This episode is a bit shorter than my usual episodes and I do apologize. I will make it up to you in future episodes of the tuatara. Scriitorii Olena Herasymiuk și Pavlo Matiușa sînt doi dintre autorii antologiei „Mecanisme de apărare. 12 scriitori ucraineni în război”, volumul apărut la Editura Muzeelor Literare Iași, în traducerea lui Mihai Hafia Traista. Cei doi scriitori au fost invitați la Festivalul Internațional de Literatură și Traducere de la Iași (FILIT). Olena Herasymiuk are 34 de ani, este poetă și a lucrat ca paramedic în zone foarte periculoase, în apropiere de Mariupol. „Ambulanța de evacuare pe distanțe lungi, Avstriika, pe care am conceput-o împreună cu colegii mei și pe care lucrează acum echipaje de paramedici voluntari, a evacuat deja peste 13.000 de răniți. Cu acest lucru ne mîndrim cel mai mult în viață” scrie ea în textul din antologie.Pavlo Matiușa are 42 de ani, este poet, prozator și traducător. În 2022 a avut grijă de un băiat de 8 ani, Ihor. Mașina în care se afla copilul împreună cu mama, tatăl și sora sa a fost atacată de soldații ruși. Doar el, Ihor, nu a fost atins de nici un glonte. Ceilalți au fost răniți și grav răniți. Băiatul de 8 ani a ieșit din mașină și a strigat la atacatori: „Ce faceți?! Îmi omorîți mama și sora!” După ce Ihor s-a reunit cu familia lui, Pavlo Matiușa  s-a înrolat voluntar în Forțele Armate ale Ucrainei. Am stat de vorbă cu Olena Herasymiuk și Pavlo Matiușa despre cum s-a schimbat relația lor cu literatura din cauza războiului, despre lupta eroică a ucrainenilor pentru salvarea țării lor, despre scutul de apărare pe care-l reprezintă acum Ucraina pentru Europa. Discuția a fost tradusă de Cristina Velicico. Olena Herasymiuk: „Înainte citeam poezii despre război dar poate că nu înțelegeam cu adevărat sentimentele, nu înțelegeam cu adevărat ce vor ele să transmită, valoarea unor lucruri sau evenimente. Dar acum înțeleg perfect: noi scriem despre lucruri care s-au stins, nu mai sînt. La universitate, la literatură învățam despre artă, despre cît de frumoase pot fi arta și literatura. Dar între timp am aflat că literatura poate fi și mai puțin frumoasă. De fapt, poate că uneori nu-i de găsit nimic frumos în literatură. Războiul schimbă foarte multe. Începi să vezi altfel, începi să percepi altfel. De aceea și poezia are altă formă astăzi.”Pavlo Matiușa: „Războiul este un reactor nuclear de emoții. În timp ce ești în război nu ai cum să simți altceva decît acest spectru de emoții negative. Acest centru nuclear a generat un început pentru o literatură nouă, o scurtătură între realitate și text. Toți scriitorii au început să scrie mai clar, mai sincer și mai corect. Pentru că nu ai timp pentru a reflecta foarte mult asupra unui text. Este o energie care se transmite prin text, prin poezie, prin literatură, prin diverse forme de scriere. Six60 have unveiled a new country and roots music festival in Matakana, which is set to take place this January. The 'Sweet Home Aotearoa' festival line-up will be curated by Six60 and promises to feature big names to bring a taste of Nashville to New Zealand shores. Six60 lead singer and guitarist Matiu Walters says he's felt a strong connection to country and roots music every time he goes to Nashville - and he thought it would be a cool idea to bring that to New Zealand. Six60 frontman Matiu Walters says he no longer cares about topping the charts and the band's “legacy” as much as he once did, saying he now prefers to focus on being “creatively brave" instead. Matiu Walters is the lead singer and guitarist of New Zealand's band Six60. The group formed in Dunedin in 2008, and across the last 16 years have broken all the rules to become New Zealand's biggest band. Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre has a brave new penguin - Matiu. The juvenile penguin is originally from Matiu Somes Island, but swam all the way to Kaikoura where he was injured in a dog attack. The Centre's staff shortlisted three names for their new friend - then conducted a Facebook poll to choose the favourite. David Kennedy - the centre's general manager - says Matiu is adapting nicely to his new habitat. Kennedy spoke to Corin Dann.

One of our most famous Kiwi bands is using its own record label to help give another band a leg-up. Six60's Massive Records is designed to foster and bring in up and coming Kiwi talent and groups - with Six60 acting as mentors with the promotional power. There's been a gang massacre on Auckland's Freyberg Wharf. Body parts everywhere. The storm in Wellington tore down trees and pulled down slips, while a catamaran was destroyed after blowing into the rocks, and onto the road, in Eastbourne. Local ferries were also cancelled, leaving a family stuck on Matiu/Somes Island, in the middle of the Wellington Harbour. They've been hunkering down overnight. Jason Johnson spoke to Susie Ferguson.

What if I told you that throughout 2020-2021, there was a band that safety played stadium shows while we were all locked in our homes? You'd probably ask “was this was in New Zealand?” and I'd reply with “Yes, duh” but the important bit is the band at the center of that; Six60. They're homegrown heroes who've ascended to stadium status by writing authentic songs that have won the hearts of people worldwide. To be a Six60 fan is to feel as though you're part of a loving tribe that's got your back. That sense of whānau (family in māori) means everything to the band and on today's podcast, I chat with frontman Matiu Walters to figure out why.
