On our second installment of The Future of Energy, we welcome Eirik Wærness, Senior Vice President & Chief Economist at Equinor, into the SmarterMarkets™ studio. David Greely sits down with Eirik to discuss Equinor's recently published Energy Perspectives 2024 – and how whether we build walls or bridges will decide our energy future.
I love my job. Talking with executives, authors, and industry leaders about all types of energy is extremely cool. Douglas Sandridge, SVP of Fulcrum Energy Capital Funds and the Executive Director for Oil & Gas Executives for Nuclear, came by the podcast. His substack article: Oil & Gas Executives Believe that Common Sense Energy Policies Must Include a Greater Role for Nuclear Energy caught my eye and it was fantastic. People seem to think a competitive issue exists between the nuclear and oil and gas markets. He is right, and in fact, everyone from the oil and gas field that I have talked to loves nuclear. Everyone in the energy space, from the linemen, rig workers, nuclear plant operators, and Union Construction folks, wants to deliver the lowest kWh to the consumers. In fact, it was Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Energy, who influenced the Energy News Beat podcast formula. I met Chris and loved his message to elevate humanity from poverty through low-cost, sustainable energy. Sustainability includes not printing money and impacting the environment in the least amount possible. The Oil & Gas Executives for Nuclear has over one hundred oil and gas executives who signed the declaration, and I turned mine in for the Sandstone Group.Check out the Oil &Gas Executives for Nuclear HERE: https://executives4nuclear.com/Connect and follow Doug on his LinkedIn HERE: https://www.linkedin.com/in/douglas-c-sandridge-63996312/Thank you, Doug, for your industry leadership and for stopping by the podcast. I am looking forward to our future podcast with Chris Wright to talk about Nuclear and its implementation in the oil field. I am also jealous that you got to hang with Robert Bryce on his new movie. - StuHighlights of the Podcast00:00 - Intro02:50 - Douglas C. Sandridge's frustration with the oil and gas industry's perception challenges Michael Bloomberg's claim on renewable energy feasibility, deeming it unrealistic.05:31 - Emphasizes fossil fuels' role in manufacturing, concerns about increased usage, and the importance of nuclear energy as a baseline—positive mention of a nuclear facility in the UAE.09:33 - Douglas C. Sandridge's journey into nuclear advocacy, creating a declaration supported by over 100 oil and gas executives favoring nuclear energy.18:04 - Chris Wright's impact on low-cost energy and humanitarian efforts credits major oil companies for advancing research and technology.22:27 - Discussion on changing perceptions in the energy industry, growing interest among the younger generation, and evolving energy education at the University of Oklahoma.26:50 - Examples of shifting perspectives in the energy industry, emphasizing the transformative power of education, citing Michael Shellenberger's associate Benny Peiser's transition.29:37 - Discussion on Meredith Angwin's book "Shorting the Grid" and its insights into the intricacies of the energy grid, emphasizing the importance for energy policymakers to read and comprehend its content.35:14 - Emphasis on the need for a global perspective in energy discussions, frustration over energy hypocrisy preventing African nations' development, and the impact of virtue signaling in developed countries.38:58 - Frustration over energy hypocrisy in California, potential agreements to buy oil from China, and the need for responsible and globally conscious energy policies.42:33 - Discuss the potential integration of nuclear energy into oil and gas operations, exploring the concept of using small modular reactors to power fracking fleets and addressing environmental concerns.47:32 - Appreciation for Irina Slav's insightful writings, recounting a personal visit to her in Bulgaria, and suggesting a collaboration with Irina for a future panel discussion on the synergy between oil and gas and nuclear energy.59:30 - Outro

What Can we Expect Now with Energy Policy. The host for this show is Guillermo Sabatier. Now that the 2022 midterm elections are over (mostly), we can expect some changes given the modest power shift in the House and possibly the Senate. Additionally, we are seeing a slow creep towards middle right or altogether away from either party and registering as independents. One likely outcome is the stalling of green or renewable policies once championed by the White House, but not as drastic as expected. We have already seen examples of the results of the mismanaged push towards 100% renewables without any regard for reliability. Europe, Australia and even some states in the US can show us how we might best apply a cautious approach. What we read about climate and energy policy online and in newspapers is developed and discussed at large events like COP and ADIPEC. Those who attend such events have a sense of the most recent policy trends.John Defterios, former Emerging Markets Editor/Anchor at CNN and currently Energy Fellow for the World Economic Forum, is a regular attendee of such events and we're delighted to have him on this episode of the Siemens Energy Podcast. Before his time at the WEF, John worked for PBS and Reuters. He has spent a great deal of his career working in the capitals of the world, listening to leaders puzzle through and formulate climate and energy policy.Host Amy Pempel begins the discussion by asking John why he thinks the Middle East is so bullish on renewables and what initiatives they are pursuing. Amy and John also discuss:Why humanity doesn't seem to plan well for the medium and long termThe nexus of possibility, feasibility, and probability in public policyProspects from the most recent COP and ADIPEC meetingsJohn's message is ultimately a hopeful one, which is meaningful considering how much change (and how many false starts) he has seen in this field since he started decades ago.If you enjoyed today's show, please leave a 5-star review. Dr. Olle Olsson is my guest on Episode 101 of Inside Ideas with Marc Buckley. Olle is a Senior Research Fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), where his work is focused on socio-technical transitions, primarily in the fields of energy and climate change mitigation. His research looks at the interplay between technology, business models and public policy and how different factors across these areas need to align to make something a viable solution. One of his key interests at the moment is trying to understand the role of different forms of scale economies in technological transitions. www.sei.org

The CSIS Energy and National Security Program is pleased to host Eirik Wærness (Equinor) to present Equinor's Energy Perspectives 2019. The discussion will be moderated by Nikos Tsafos (CSIS). Energy Perspectives provides a broad perspective on macroeconomics and global energy markets to 2050, analyzing relevant trends, climate policy impacts, energy sources, sectors, and regions across three very different scenarios – Reform, Renewal and Rivalry. Recent indicators show diverging paths in energy market developments in terms of economic growth, energy demand, energy efficiency, technology development and geopolitics. Two of the scenarios illustrate where the world may move if current trends continue, while Renewal shows where the world needs to move to limit global warming to well below 2°C. This year, Renewal is complemented with two sensitivities: (1) the IPCC’s 1.5° report; and (2) the effects of delayed policy action to 2025. This event is made possible by general funding to CSIS and the Energy & National Security Program.
Hør mer i ukens sending! Produsent er Magne Antonsen og programleder er Marius Lorentzen.
