Marking the German release of his book “The Internet is not the Answer”, bestselling author Andrew Keen was at ESMT European School of Management and Technology in Berlin. The Internet has now ushered in one of the greatest shifts in society since the Industrial Revolution. In his book, Andrew Keen describes the Internet as a mirror of our culture and investigates how it is reconfiguring our world, often at great cost. He presented his main theses and debated his ideas with Norbert Riedel, Commissioner for International Cyber Policy of the German Federal Foreign Office, and Sandro Gaycken, cybersecurity expert at ESMT. The panel discussion was moderated by Christoph von Marschall, Chief Diplomatic Correspondent, Verlag Der Tagesspiegel.

Associate Professor Stefan Wagner joined ESMT European School of Management and Technology in February 2011 as an assistant professor. Previously he was an assistant professor in the Institute of Innovation Research, Technology Management, and Entrepreneurship (INNO-tec) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität LMU in Munich, Germany. Stefan received his Habilitation in 2010 and his Doctorate in Economics (summa cum laude) in 2005 from LMU.
Paul Heidhues joined ESMT European School of Management and Technology in September 2010 as a full professor, the first holder of the Lufthansa Chair in Competition and Regulation, and the director of PhD studies. Before joining ESMT, Paul was an associate professor for Economic Theory at Bonn Universität from 2005 to 2010 and a research fellow at the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB) from 1999 to 2005. He received his Habilitation from the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin in 2005 and his PhD in Economics from Rice University, Houston, Texas in 2000. Paul worked on numerous topics in Industrial Organization and Competition Policy such as input-market bargaining power, merger control, and collusion. More recently, much of his work focuses on the functioning of markets when consumers are partly driven by psychological factors – such as social preferences, loss aversion, time-inconsistency, or naivete – that the classic consumer model abstracts from. Among other things, he has written on how firms optimally price products and design credit contracts in response to consumers’ psychological tendencies, and he has investigated the implications thereof for consumer-protection regulation.
Laura Guillén joined ESMT European School of Management and Technology as an assistant professor in September 2010. She received her PhD in Organizational Studies with a specialization in organizational behavior from ESADE in 2007. Laura also holds a MSc in Management Research from ESADE, since 2004, and a combined undergraduate and MA in Business Administration from ESADE, 1998. From 2008 to 2010 she worked as a post-doctoral research fellow at INSEAD. Laura's research interests are on leadership development and career dynamics, especially issues related to emotional intelligence, competencies at work, motivation to lead, identity change processes, gender diversity, and executive coaching. Her research was funded by the Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship for post-doctoral studies within the 7th European Community Framework Programme, from the European Commission (2008-2010). Laura has studied Psychology (UNED, Madrid, Spain) and is member of the Research Center for Leadership at ESADE and the Research Group on Survey Research and Applied Statistic of the European Social Survey. She is a research fellow with the INSEAD Global Leadership Center. Prior to her academic career, Laura worked for Unilever (Spain). She is a senior consultant with Endalia (Spain.
CB Bhattacharya is the E.ON Chair Professor in Corporate Responsibility at ESMT European School of Management and Technology in Berlin, Germany. On September 1, 2010 the president appointed him the Associate Dean of International Relations and on April 1, 2011, Dean of International Relations. Prof. Bhattacharya received his PhD in Marketing from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in 1984. Before joining ESMT in 2009, he was the Everett W. Lord Distinguished Scholar and Professor of Marketing at the School of Management at Boston University. Before joining Boston University, he was on the faculty at the Goizueta Business School, Emory University. Prior to his PhD, CB worked for three years as a Product Manager in Reckitt Benckiser plc. His expertise is in the area of business strategy innovation aimed at increasing both business and social value, specifically how companies can use underleveraged "intangible assets" such as corporate identity and reputation, membership and brand communities, and corporate social responsibility to strengthen stakeholder relationships.
Today we had the opportunity to talk to CB Bhattacharya, E.ON Chair Professor in Corporate Responsibility, at the ESMT European School of Management and Technology. He is responsible for the ESMT Sustainable Business Roundtable (SBRT). The forum took place in Berlin today. The ideas behind the SBRT is to establish a partnership between business and academia. CB Bhattacharya is talking about the progress of green industries, the phenomenon of greenwashing and the important role of social media in the process.
Catalina joined ESMT European School of Management and Technology in November 2009 as an associate professor. In November of 2012 she was appointed as the dean of faculty, thereby ending her directorship of the research area, which she took over in September 2010. Previously she was an assistant professor of Decision Sciences at London Business School. Catalina received her PhD and MS in Operations Research from Cornell University, in 2002 and 2000 respectively. She also holds a BS in Mathematics from the University of Bucharest. Catalina's research focuses on the design, analysis, and application of statistical models and methods for managerial decision making. She has worked on three different areas: demand modeling and forecasting for revenue management, statistical models for credit risk, and methodologies for correlated binary and survival data with biostatistical applications. She teaches MBA and EMBA courses on Managerial Statistics and Operations Management, and PhD seminars on introductory and advanced Statistical Research Methods.
Francis Bidault is a professor emeritus at ESMT European School of Management and Technology. He is the founding director of ESMT's Full-time MBA Program, which he directed from September 2005 to January 2010. Before joining ESMT he was a professor of strategy and innovation management at Theseus Institute and EDHEC Business School and the dean of the Theseus MBA program. His special area of expertise covers industry analysis, the management of alliances and the management of innovation.
Wulff Plinke is the founding dean of ESMT European School of Management and Technology, Berlin, Germany. From the outset of the School in 2002 he served as dean and managing director, building the School from scratch to one of the respected European business schools. Today, ESMT is accredited from AMBA and AACSB. In 2011, Plinke retired from his office as a Dean of ESMT and assumed responsibility as a Chairman of the Board of the Association of Friends of ESMT. Wulff Plinke graduated in Business Administration from Universität zu Köln, Germany and received his doctoral degree in Business Administration from Ruhr Universität Bochum, Germany. He attained his venia legendi (Habilitation) in Business Administration from Ruhr Universität Bochum in 1981. From 1981 to 1985, he was a professor of business administration at Universität Hannover, Germany. From 1985 to 1993, he held the chair of Business Administration and Industrial Marketing Management at the Freie Universität Berlin. From 1993 to 03/2008 he held the chair of Business Administration and Industrial Marketing Management at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. From 1993 to 1996, he also served as the dean of the School of Business and Economics at Humboldt Universität zu Berlin. Professor Plinke has acted as academic director and chief executive to the Institute of Management and Technology IMT Berlin and Universitätsseminar der Wirtschaft USW Schloss Gracht, both of which have been fully integrated into ESMT.
