It's rare to come across a company that has evolved as profitably or organically as Threaded Fasteners, Inc. While it's tempting to award all the credit to Billy Duren, president and CEO of the Alabama-based manufacturer and distributor, he'd be the first to tell you that the company's success is wholly due to the creativity of its employee-owners.  Jason caught up with Billy to learn more about the organization's dynamic growth and its legacy of innovation, both of which were made possible by a succession plan that centered around an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). In 2010, the Association for Information Systems formed a special interest group () to nurture an international community of academics that study the role of digital technologies in fostering environmentally, economically and socially sustainable development. Fifteen years later, we sit down with , the current SIGGreen president, to reflect on the progress we have made. What do we know about how digital technologies help greening our planet? What efforts in empirical, theoretical, and design work is still needed? Is our role to understand the role of digital technologies or do we need to push and enact change ourselves? We conclude that environmental questions and problems are now firmly on the radar screen of our discipline but more work needs to be done for information systems academics to transform the way we think about and use digital technologies.  Episode reading list Corbett, J., & Mellouli, S. John Panaccione, CEO and Co-Founder of Folla Capital, is on a mission to change that. In today's episode, John explained how his experience as a veteran has shaped his passion for helping others in the veteran and minority business communities succeed.“I've had to live through running a business, owning a business, and raising capital,” John said. “I felt firsthand some of the challenges that we have there, but now, doing what I do, I just love helping fellow veterans and women- or minority-owned businesses deal with some of the unique challenges that we need to face.”Folla Capital, where John serves as CEO, is a registered broker-dealer that supports clients in conducting regulation crowdfunding offerings. Their goal is to make financing more accessible for underserved communities. By leveraging tools like Reg CF and Reg D exemptions, John and his team help entrepreneurs overcome the systemic barriers that have historically excluded them from funding opportunities.John shared several success stories from his work, including one about helping a veteran-owned software company called Oplign. The business, which helps veterans translate their military experience into civilian qualifications, raised nearly $700,000 through a Reg CF campaign. John reflected on the pride he feels when clients succeed. “There's nothing better than when somebody calls me and says, ‘Hey, two years ago you helped me, and now we're killing it.' That's the biggest reward I experience.”John's work is more than just helping companies raise money—it's about building communities. Highlighting the importance of both geographic and demographic connections, he explained how Folla Capital fosters networks that empower entrepreneurs. “Crowdfunding is wonderful,” he said, “but at the end of the day, a lot of the money ends up coming from people that have some connection with the management team.”Through Folla Capital, John is leveling the playing field for veterans and other underrepresented entrepreneurs. His work proves that with the right tools and support, these communities can thrive, creating not just businesses but stronger, more inclusive communities. If you're inspired by John's mission, stay tuned for more insights later in the episode about his superpower and how he uses it to empower others.tl;dr:John Panaccione discussed the challenges veterans and minority entrepreneurs face when raising capital.Folla Capital helps entrepreneurs succeed using tools like Reg CF and Reg D exemptions.Success stories highlight the importance of building both geographic and demographic communities.John's superpower is leveling the playing field by teaching the rules entrepreneurs need to know.Entrepreneurs can achieve success by exceeding standards, building networks, and fostering resilience. How to Develop Leveling the Playing Field As a SuperpowerJohn's superpower is “leveling the playing field.” He explained, “I've learned that most people that have goals are leaders. If they know the rules, they can compete.” John prides himself on being a teacher who ensures that entrepreneurs understand the standards and rules of raising capital, empowering them to create their own success. He emphasized, “We don't want to be the smart people with all the answers. We like to pride ourselves on being teachers.”Illustrative Story:One of John's proudest success stories involves helping a group of veterans open an indoor skydiving iFly facility in Wilmington, North Carolina. Despite skepticism and challenges, the team raised $1 million via a Reg CF campaign to unlock a $12 million financing package. This funding transformed an empty lot into a thriving business, showcasing how understanding the rules and applying them effectively can bring ambitious projects to life.Tips for Developing This Superpower:Learn the Rules: Familiarize yourself with the standards and regulations in your field.Aim Higher Than the Standard: Strive to exceed the minimum requirements for quality and preparation.Teach Others: Share your knowledge to empower others, rather than positioning yourself as the “expert.”Build Community: Leverage both geographic and demographic networks to support your goals.Practice Resilience: Don't be discouraged by skepticism—focus on proving doubters wrong through action.By following John's example and advice, you can make leveling the playing field a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJohn Panaccione ("Pana-chone" (he/him):CEO & Co-Founder, Folla CapitalAbout Folla Capital: Folla Capital is an SEC-registered broker-dealer. He also serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Product Innovation Management and Journal of Business Research. Summary: In this episode, Marin Jovanovic discusses the evolution and characteristics of B2B platforms, contrasting them with B2C platforms. The conversation covers the peculiarities of B2B platforms, including data governance, network effects, transaction value, and the complexity of governance in multi-firm ecosystems. Marin also highlights the growing importance of data utilization, modular structures, and the emergence of generative ecosystems and meta-organizations in the B2B space. The discussion further explores the potential of AI in conjunction with platforms, particularly in the medical sector. Key Discussion Points: Definition of Platforms in the B2B Context: Marin shares his journey into platform research, transitioning from servitization to industrial platforms. Main Findings and Peculiarities of B2B Platforms: The discussion highlights differences in network effects, the higher value but lower volume of transactions, and the increased awareness and demands of participating companies compared to B2C platforms. The Role of Humans in Matchmaking: The conversation explores whether highly specific B2B transactions might require more human intervention in matchmaking rather than relying solely on algorithms. Cyber-Physical Integration: The importance of merging information systems and management in the context of autonomous solutions is emphasized. Challenges in Explaining B2B Platform Models: The barriers in conveying the concepts of B2B platforms and ecosystems to managers, using the example of 5G technology, are discussed. Modularity and Generative Ecosystems: The significance of modularity in both architecture and management for fostering flexible and reconfigurable B2B ecosystems is highlighted. Open Innovation and Open Organization: The discussion connects B2B platforms to concepts of open innovation and broader organizational collaboration. Microservices and Ecosystem Envelopment: The relevance of microservices for customization and the increasing convergence of platforms into "platforms of platforms" or meta-organizations is explored. Data Monetization in B2B: The potential for companies to sell and leverage data, drawing parallels between B2B and B2C models with examples like smart cities and business analytics, is discussed. Physical Assets as Pivots for B2B Platforms: The idea that valuable physical assets owned by companies can serve as the core of B2B platforms, using the concept of "solution enabler platforms," is examined. Different types of B2B platforms based on control and decision rights, such as consortium platforms and algorithmic governance, are also introduced. Future Research Focus on AI and Platforms: Marin shares his current research interest in the application of AI in specific sectors like medical technology and how AI solutions interact with existing hospital systems and potentially aggregate on platforms. Danielle Allen and Mark Fagan say that when tested, thoughtfully deployed, and regulated AI actually can help governments serve citizens better. Sure, there is no shortage of horror stories these days about the intersection of AI and government—from a municipal chatbot that told restaurant owners it was OK to serve food that had been gnawed by rodents to artificial intelligence police tools that misidentify suspects through faulty facial recognition. And now the Trump administration and Elon Musk's so-called Department of Government Efficiency or DOGE say they are fast-tracking the use of AI to root out government waste and fraud, while making public virtually no details about what tools they are using or how they'll be deployed. But Allen and Fagan, say that while careless deployment creates risks like opening security holes, exacerbating inefficiencies, and automating flawed decision-making, AI done the right way can help administrators and policymakers make better and smarter decisions, and can make governments more accessible and responsive to the citizens they serve. They also say we need to reorient our thinking from AI being a replacement for human judgement to a partnership model, where each brings its strengths to the table. Danielle Allen is an HKS professor and the founder of the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation. Mark Fagan is a lecturer in public policy and faculty chair of the Delivering Public Services section of the Executive Education Program at HKS. They join PolicyCast host Ralph Ranalli to explain the guidelines, guardrails, and principles that can help government get AI right. Policy Recommendations:Danielle Allen's Policy Recommendations:* Support the "people's bid" for TikTok and generally promote an alternative, pro-social model for social media platforms.* Establish AI offices in state governments: Create offices that use AI to enhance openness, accountability, and transparency in government.Mark Fagan's Policy Recommendations:* Implement "sandbox" spaces for regulatory experimentation that allow organizations to test different policy ideas in a controlled environment to see what works.* Adopt a risk-based regulatory approach similar to the EU that categorize AI regulations based on risk levels, with clear guidelines on high-risk activities where AI use is prohibited versus those where experimentation is allowed. Danielle Allen is the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University. She is a professor of political philosophy, ethics, and public policy and director of the Democratic Knowledge Project and of the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation. She is also a seasoned nonprofit leader, democracy advocate, national voice on AI and tech ethics, and author. A past chair of the Mellon Foundation and Pulitzer Prize Board, and former dean of humanities at the University of Chicago, she is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and American Philosophical Society. Her many books include the widely acclaimed Talking to Strangers: Anxieties of Citizenship Since Brown v Board of Education;  Our Declaration: a reading of the Declaration of Independence in defense of equality; Cuz: The Life and Times of Michael A.; Democracy in the Time of Coronavirus; and Justice by Means of Democracy. She writes a column on constitutional democracy for the Washington Post. Outside the University, she is a co-chair for the Our Common Purpose Commission and Founder and President for Partners in Democracy, where she advocates for democracy reform to create greater voice and access in our democracy, and to drive progress towards a new social contract that serves and includes us all. She holds Ph.Ds from Harvard University in government and from King's College, University of Cambridge, in classics; master's degrees from Harvard University in government and King's College, University of Cambridge in classics; and an AB from Princeton in classics.Mark Fagan is a lecturer in public policy and former senior fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School. In executive education, he is the faculty chair for Delivering Public Services: Efficiency, Equity and Quality. In another program, he teaches strategy and cross boundary collaboration. The focus of his research is on the role of regulation in competitive markets. He is presently spearheading an initiative at the Taubman Center for State and Local Government that examines the policy and associated regulatory impacts of autonomous vehicles. He leads efforts to catalyze policy making through Autonomous Vehicle Policy Scrums, cross sector policy design sessions hosted by governments from Boston to Buenos Aries to Toronto. Her research interests include information systems, finance management, organization science, and the economics of blockchain. She focuses particularly on decentralized platforms and open-source software. Summary: In this episode of Talking About Platforms, Maria discusses the platform business model as one that creates infrastructural opportunities for other agents, companies, individuals, and users to create new value. The platform operator provides the infrastructure and foundational tools for other economic agents to create derivative value and the economy around the platform. Key discussion points include: • Decentralized platforms and blockchain: Maria shares her journey into researching blockchain technology around 2017, initially learning about it from the Bitcoin perspective and then finding a community on campus discussing this technology. She notes the ethos behind it as a movement against centralization, particularly in financial transactional systems, aligning with open-source software concepts. • Research gaps and the evolution of blockchain applications: Early research focused on understanding what blockchain is and what changes it brings to existing business models. The evolution of applications, from Bitcoin to various cryptocurrencies, has been crucial in understanding blockchain's impact. • Traditional firms and blockchain: Some companies use blockchain technology to make processes more efficient, such as stablecoin companies utilizing blockchain for cheaper and more efficient payment rails. Others, like Starbucks and Nike, experiment with Web3 artifacts for community engagement and loyalty enhancement. • Open-source community and value capture: Maria discusses capturing the value of open source in the cryptocurrency space, given that a majority of cryptocurrencies have open-source code on GitHub. • Centralization in decentralized sectors: The discussion touches on the tendency toward centralization in the blockchain space, with larger entities dominating through grant programs. • Tokenization and incentivization: Blockchain introduces the concept of token organizations, digitizing transactions and exchanges, and using tokens as a payment for contributions, potentially shifting the balance between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. • Algorithmic governance and immutability: The immutability of code in blockchain systems can be a dilemma when the system scales and new market mechanisms require changes. Flexibility is needed, and sometimes centralized entities are required to make decisions. Publications & Projects Mentioned: • von Hippel, E. (2002). Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.     This week I'm giving another listen to a conversation I shared with Professor Christian Terwiesch and I'm eager to share it with you! Christian is a Professor in Wharton's Operations and Information Management department, co-director of Penn's Mack Institute for Innovation Management, and also holds a faculty appointment at Penn's Perelman School of Medicine. He is the co-author of Matching Supply with Demand, a widely used textbook in Operations Management. He launched the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in business on Coursera based on the book and since its inception, more than half a million students have enrolled. His first management book, Innovation Tournaments, details a new process-based approach to innovation and has inspired innovation tournaments around the world. His latest book, Connected Strategies, combines his expertise in the fields of operations, innovation, and strategy to help companies take advantage of digital technology leading to new business models. In addition to his teaching and his research, Professor Terwiesch is the host of “Work of Tomorrow,” a national radio show on Sirius XM 132.     THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone wanting to become more innovative or bring a culture of innovation to their organization, as well as those wanting to get a pulse on new business models shaping how organizations interact with customers today.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… we have to find different ways of delighting our customers. How do we do that? Through innovation and continuous connection. Professor Terwiesch maintains that innovation is a cultural process that can be managed. That is the power of the Innovation Tournament, it leaves room for that magic spark to fly while giving it direction and structure. Beyond Innovation Tournaments, it's about becoming continuously connected. This connection enables new ways of delighting the customer and also allows organizations to provide more value to the customer, potentially at a lower cost. The purpose of a connected strategy and a continuous relationship is not only to get data but also to do a better job for the customer.    WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… I love that Christian has identified these new business models that are fundamentally changing the way organizations interact with their customers.     Running Time: 30:47    Subscribe on iTunes     Find Tiffani Online: LinkedIn Facebook X    Find Christian Online: LinkedIn  Connected-Strategy Website Work of Tomorrow Podcast    Christian's Book:  Connected Strategy Book

Derek is on the Vertex AI team at Google Cloud where he works on helping developers build generative AI-powered agents for their own applications. Derek is also a graduate of the David Eccles School of Business with a degree in Operations Management. David and Frances discuss the difference between models and agents, and why humans are still very much integral to the process. They address the strengths and weaknesses of these types of systems and the ways in which they might be used by organizations most effectively to help them work more efficiently. Derek speaks to the realistic worries of some AI critics and gives some of his own real-life examples of how AI agents help streamline his work life and personal life. Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University fm.Show Links:Derek Egan | LinkedInVertex AI | Google CloudMaster of Science in Business Analytics - The David Eccles School of BusinessDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) • InstagramEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) • Instagram Eccles Experience MagazineEpisode Quotes:Google Cloud invests in explainable AI and safety filters to build AI that benefits everyone[09:06] How can we build AI that's beneficial for all is a critical question. At Google Cloud, we take that really seriously for responsible AI. It all starts with a set of AI principles that translates into multiple things in practice as we build these products and up front and not as an afterthought. A few examples of that are ethical reviews. So,  internally, there are dedicated teams that essentially conduct  ethical analysis and risk assessments for any new product that's going to launch and their job is to identify potential biases. [09:57] We haven't been perfect here and no one has been perfect here because it's a process and we're all learning. And that's also why, as we gain learnings and learn how to interact with these models and how to control the types of responses, we're also building explainability into the models themselves. That's really important. AI will not take away your job but someone who uses it better might. 18:35 If I'm a student at the University of Utah right now in the David Eccles School of Business or an alumni, I would be pretty anxious about this, right? Like, hey, how does AI impact my job? What I would encourage people though, is to think about reframing that question.  And the way I reframe it is I don't think AI is going to replace your job, and I don't think you're competing directly with AI for your job. I do think you're going to compete with other people who can competently use AI to do your job and that will lead to disruption. That will lead to a change in the way that works done, day in and day out. So, my guidance, my invitation would be to try it out, embrace AI and start using it. See how it can make you more productive. See how it can take the nitty gritty tasks off of your plate and help you to automate them on your behalf.Derek shares a developer's guide for building AI applications.32:39 If you are a developer and you want to build an application, my guidance would be to identify something that's fairly low hanging fruit, fairly simple, where you're going to get started. And where it's going to be an interaction between the person and the agent and not something that's going to go run autonomously and not have the right feedback loop. And then you can measure and get a sense for how helpful is that agent, and then iterate on it. And I'd encourage you to check out some of the use cases. We have like 185 customer use cases on a blog post published from Google Cloud. But there's a bunch of examples out there and there's a bunch of documentation that we offer as well to help people get started.
