We couldn't do a season on "the marriage plot" in literature without reading the Jeffrey Eugenides novel that's literally titled The Marriage Plot. Guest Lucas Mann (author, most recently, of the essay collected Attachments, and co-owner of Riffraff Bookstore and Bar in Providence, Rhode Island) joins us to discuss Eugenides' novel, which contains a "marriage plot" while also being a kind of meta-commentary on marriage plots. Plus: Is the book's clinically depressed, bandana-wearing character meant to be David Foster Wallace? How does Lucas employ "power poses" to sell books? And is there anything worse than a cash-bar wedding? You can find more info about Lucas, including where to read his work and how to buy his books, at his website: https://www.lucasmann.com/ If you like the podcast, and would like more of it in your life--two bonus episodes each and every month--consider chipping in $5 to our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BookFight Note: This episode is the 7th of 8 in our Marriage Plot season (not that you need to listen to them in order!). The second novel in the Queen's Thief series. Forsaken by the gods and left to his own devices, Eugenides, Royal Thief of Eddis, summons all his wit and wiles in an attempt to conquer the rival queen of Attolia. Revenge... When Eugenides, the Thief of Eddis, stole Hamiathes' Gift, the queen of Attolia lost more than a mythical relic. She lost face. Everyone knew that Eugenides had outwitted and escaped her. To restore her reputation and reassert her power, the queen of Attolia will go to any length and accept any help that is offered...she will risk her country to execute the perfect revenge. ...but... Eugenides can steal anything. And he taunts the queen of Attolia, moving through her strongholds seemingly at will. So Attolia waits, secure in the knowledge that the Thief will slip, that he will haunt her palace one too many times. ...at what price? When Eugenides finds his small mountain country at war with Attolia, he must steal a man, he must steal a queen, he must steal peace. But his greatest triumph—and his greatest loss—comes in capturing something that the queen of Attolia thought she had sacrificed long ago....
Eugenides and Irene make a serious threat, and we discuss the centralization of power, risk-taking, new avenues for Pheris, the idea of an inverted tragedy, and, as always, love. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/attolian-archives-pod/support

Short story time! An overambitious juggler gets more than he bargained for. Eugenides has a night out. Back in the real world, we discuss channeling the divine, Gen being nice, the origins of horse hate, surprisingly accurate likenesses on money, the Attolian DIY scene, and big small stories.
In our first Quarantine Episode, Eugenides is King of Attolia and also sweaty and in need of a bath, so he takes one with a bunch of other sweaty dudes. It's symbolic or something. Meanwhile, we discuss push-ups, godlike influence, scars, soldiers, and babies.
The magus enjoys his exile. Irene and Relius find trust. Eugenides destroys some perfectly good drapes. Discussion points: different perspectives on Gen, who gets a first name, Sophos, scythes, and murder.
Eugenides drugs a sweet old lady to escape his curfew then suffers through a family reunion. We cover Erondites family vibes, Emily Wilson’s new translation of The Odyssey. Gen’s questionable health, how the loving power of friendship saves the day, and Attolia’s opinions on Costis.

In chapter 10, Eugenides defeats Erondites for good (or does he?) and looks very nice in his wife's pajamas. Discussion points: whether or not something's a twist if you know it's coming, the therapeutic value of issuing pardons, lethium (not lithium), smooth shooting, cloth of gold, and goats.
The Queen of Attolia has it all - back and forth kidnapping, multi-kingdom wars, spies, queasy love stories, and that scamp Eugenides continuing to fool us all. We’re continuing our exploration of the The Queen’s Thief series by Meghan Whalen Turner, and while we have a few issues with a romance that begins with amputation, we’re dazzled by Turner’s tricky plot filled with winking secrets. Listen in and experience Madeleine railing against the gods, Grace wondering at fantasy nihilism, and both sisters engaging in some illness-fueled squabbling. Chloe breaks an amphora, Kamet can't swim, Eugenides doesn't know how to talk to his fiancée, and Irene is skipping church. Treaty negotiations are going great. Also featuring: a brand new river, Beauty and the Beast, divine agendas, ambiguous feelings, and callbacks (forwards?) from Thick As Thieves.
While Eddis and Attolia bond over driving the Mede army from their shores, Eugenides has another nap and realizes that his happy ending may be more complicated than he'd thought. Discussion points: gender, paragraph breaks, passive aggression, and the power of love.
Eugenides and Attolia take a romantic boat ride while we discuss water imagery, lesbian merging but with Byzantine straights (?), bluffing, power dynamics, and Hannibal Buress.
While sneaking Sally– uh, we mean Eugenides, through the alley, we discuss moist men, Kill Bill sirens, wooden cannons, point of view, and whether or not anybody but Gen actually knows what the hell is going on.
We barrel head-on into Book 2; Eugenides barrels head-on into a wooden board. So far, so good. Also featuring: Irene's elusive feelings, irresponsible childcare, hand puns, and our friend Chip.

Anyway the wind blows, strange things come for the party. Malik's head is aching all the time, so he and Sil'dasa just kidnap a man. Eugenides has fallen into a trap. He’s never been trapped on a mission before, but somehow the Queen knew his every step and now he’s at her mercy! Evan & Liz Frerichs are taking about free will and determinism today. In this episode Jessy and Rebekah review a menstrual cup that allows you to have sex with the partner of your choosing while you’re on your period without ruining anyone’s sheets! And then WTMV welcomes their first guest, Lucy Frank! Lucy is about to graduate from Duke School of Nursing and visited WTMV to talk about appropriate use of pronouns in a medical scenario and, really, in life. And then Jessy, Rebekah and Lucy played a celebrity themed drinking game with T-Rex arms? You’ll have to listen for details. 0:39: Jessy and Rebekah (but mostly Jessy) offer a completely unpaid review of SoftCup. It’s great. We (mostly) love SoftCup. But, Dear SoftCup, please sponsor our podcast. Okay thank you. 7:40: Rebekah’s sister Lucy comes to WTMV to talk about the appropriate use of pronouns in the world but, more specifically, in a medical context (FYI: she’s a nurse). Welcome to Welcome to My Vagina, Lucy! 15:30: Watch Jessy’s amazing video called “Intersex Basics.” It’s all about the fact that gender exists on a spectrum and how people oversimply everything to make it easier to fit those they interact with into neat little boxes. But we all know that life is never easily categorized. People are complicated and that is what makes us amazing. So watch her video. Also, read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. Eugenides wrote this book because he was dissatisfied with the way literature and history dealt with intersex anatomy and emotions. Read it and then let’s talk about it. 17:30: Say it with us: being transgender is not a problem. 19:20: “Vanessa Goes to the Doctor.” This video is EVERYTHING. 23:30: Here is a link to Duson Spectrum, the Gay-Straight Alliance at Duke School of Nursing. 24:30: Here is a little information about “Let’s Talk About Sex!” It’s an interactive workshop for healthcare providers and students to get used to, you guessed it, talking about sex! All in an effort to make it more comfortable for the provider as well as the patient. 27:00: Ethan Cicero is awesome. He wrote an incredible, and deeply troubling, article about the barriers to care for transgender people that everyone should read. Seriously. Read it. His efforts have shed much needed light on this issue and are hopefully leading to higher educational standards across the medical community. 29:50: Lucy gives us some really wild statistic about victims of sex trafficking. It’s horrible. We all have to do better but health care providers are oftentimes the only people outside sex trafficking rings that come in contact with victims. Contact us! Watch us! Love us!
The New Yorker: The Writer's Voice - New Fiction from The New Yorker
Jeffrey Eugenides reads his story "Bronze" from the February 5th, 2018, issue of the magazine. Eugenides is the author of three novels, including "Middlesex," which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2003. His most recent book, the story collection "Fresh Complaint," was published last year.
More than a year after reading Middlesex for Episode 12, this week we return to Jeffrey Eugenides' oeuvre to check out 2011's The Marriage Plot. It's a more focused, less-sprawling book than Middlesex, but as in his previous book Eugenides spends a lot of time here talking about growing up with a difficult condition. Intentional or not, there's also some subtle sexism here that we try to walk ourselves through—it's complicated by both authorial intent and the time the book is set (the early 1980s), but it's still a talk worth having in light of recent events.
