Today I'm drinking an Extra Stout from Zero Gravity Brewing https://www.zerogravitybeer.com/extra-stout The Boozebuddy Update is brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcast intros & outros, demonstration and explainer videos, eLearning, telephone systems, and more. Check out samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com Speaking of stouts, despite what you may have heard, and even what numbers may have said, Stouts are here to stay. Apparently, the beverage, like many things, took a hit with shutdowns. Most people, myself included, prefer a draught over a can or bottle. “Stout Sells” seems to be the word with the beverage seemingly as popular as ever, including with those under 30. Don't take my word for it - the Irish Times has more https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/food-and-drink/the-state-of-stout-despite-its-doomsayers-the-national-tipple-is-here-to-stay-1.4695325 Another story from the UK because it's Jeremy Clarkson, from the proper version of Top Gear, who is producing Hawkstone on the Cotswold farm or ‘Diddly Squat Farm” as he calls it… you may have seen on his “Clarkson's Farm” show on Amazon Prime. While he says some incredibly dumb things, like the original slogan, I like the one that they could actually print - “hard to make but easy to drink”. Things I learned from his story, in other countries you can order beer on Amazon. https://www.dailystar.co.uk/showbiz/jeremy-clarksons-dream-p-up-25550401 And what to get for the beer lover on your gift list? Well if they're not close enough to Lucy & Howe Brewing in Vermont to Get a bottle share https://mailchi.mp/cff7f5f4f786/beer-for-all-weather-10704589, here's a list I found from Hopculture. Hey Folks so we're talking about one of my Favourite beer styles the Baltic Porter. Porter is a style of beer that was developed in London, England, in the early 18th century. It was well-hopped and dark in appearance owing to the use of brown malt. The name originated from its popularity with street and river porters. The popularity of porter was significant, and it became the first beer style to be brewed across the world, and production had commenced in Ireland, North America, Sweden, and Russia by the end of the 18th century. The history of stout and porter are intertwined. The name "stout", used for a dark beer, came about because strong porters were marketed as "stout porter", later was shortened to just stout. Guinness Extra Stout was originally called "Extra Superior Porter" and was not given the name "Extra Stout" until 1840.Today, the terms are used by different breweries almost interchangeably to describe dark beers, and the two styles have more in common than in distinction. Baltic porter is a version of imperial stout that originated in the Baltic region in the 19th century. Imperial stouts exported from Britain in the 18th century were popular in the countries around the Baltic Sea, and were recreated locally using local ingredients and brewing traditions. Early versions were warm fermented until the late 19th century, when many breweries began to brew their porter with cool fermentation, so are technically lagers. Baltic porters typically have a minimum gravity of 18° plato and a high alcohol content, even over 10% ABV. They are produced in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, and the United States. Baltic porter is a specialty of many Polish breweries, with the country's oldest being produced by Żywiec in 1881.Finland's Sinebrychoff has been brewing Baltic porters in Helsinki since the 1860s,while Estonia's Põhjala is a newcomer specialising in barrel-aged porters. In Denmark the word "porter" is synonymous with "imperial stout"and Wiibroe's Baltic porter (now brewed by Carlsberg) is known by both names. Porter was brewed in Germany from 1853 until 1990, when production ceased in East Germany after reunification. In 1998, the Hoepfner brewery of Karlsruhe resumed production of an old recipe. It was followed by other brewers such as Neuzeller Kloster Brewery and Bergquell Brewery who brew an 8% abv Baltic porter. Baltic Porter Day, started in Poland in 2016 by Marcin Chmielarz, is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of January. https://www.brewersfriend.com/homebrew/recipe/view/1193996/baltic-porter https://escarpmentlabs.com https://urbanbarrelcompany.com

Some companies have been naughty and it's time for us to talk about them. First, we crack open some beers. Ben has already got one on the go and finishes Shelby from Thornbridge in the first few minutes, Aadil drinks Hugs & Kisses from Brouwerij De Molen, Lucy has been to Burning Soul to pick up the Raspberry Ripple and Ben opens Galaga from Brew York. Then we get em. Aadil discusses the bad branding and messaging of the beer Karen Sour from Calgary brewer Common Crown Brewing Co. More beers are needed after the conversation so Aadil has Van Vollenhoven & Co Extra Stout, Lucy jumps on the Brew York train with Big Eagle 2020 and Ben finishes with Touch Sensitive from North Brewing Co. Lucy lightens the mood with a discussion on the games she has played including Bird Alone, The Great Perhaps and Ultracore. Conversation then descends to the dark depths some gaming companies have fallen to recently and Ben asks at what point do we stop supporting a developer?

Even though the style of "Irish Extra Stout" doesn't ring any bells, we had one to judge tonight. More Sheaf Stout than Guinness, it's an interesting style that we don't see much of. We also had another Cream Ale lined up for us, something we always welcome! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
John sent Tim, unaccompanied, to The Guinness Open Gate Brewery and Barrel House in Halethorpe to have a pint or two with Ryan Wagner, Brewery Ambassador. Alone. Without any supervision. To a place with Guinness. When you think Guinness, you think Extra Stout, right? You're not wrong, but you need to hear about what the exquisite, new experimental beers coming out of the new Guinness Brewery right near BWI Airport. This brewery has a bar with it's own two-floor museum of the history of Guinness. Ryan Wagner, takes Tim out of his comfort zone of Miller Lite to sample the newest offering from the old sod. Coming off of Jamil's recent trip to Asia, we decided to revisit the Foreign Extra Stout category. Notoriously hard to find in the U.S. Jamil was able to track down some pretty neat beer and mule them back for us - including Guinness's version! We all had a clear favorite in the studio, which makes it even more painful to know that it will be nearly impossible to find on our side of the pond. Oh well, such is beer!
This week we talk about Irish Extra Stouts and try some Homebrew!
In this episode of Brewing With Style, Jamil and Tasty discuss BJCP Category 16D - Foreign Extra Stout. This robust beer is rich, roasty and fruity, and is a true work of art when done right. Tune in and learn about commercial examples, as well as how you can homebrew one yourself.
