On this episode of Taste Buds with Deb, host Debra Eckerling speaks with Evan Fox, founder and owner of Yeastie Boys Bagels. With eight locations around Los Angeles, the vibrant food truck is full of delicious New-York style LA bagels. Their creative combinations have fun names - mainly pop culture and music references - to go with them.    When Fox started Yeastie Boys Bagels in 2014, there were not a lot of bagel options in Los Angeles.  What started as a side project with a friend - experimenting with bagels in an LA apartment, and delivering them to tastemakers, mostly in the music scene, and posting funny bagel memes on Instagram – is now a thriving LA business.   “It's been pretty wild; I'm grateful and blessed to be here,” he says. “My whole thing for Yeastie Boys is, ‘How can I make something that people want to eat daily, that's a quick bagel, that's a classic that you'd get in a bodega in New York. … How can I take the old classics and make them more refined [and] more current?'”   Yeastie Boys is known for the New York style bagel. Fox's top three favorite bagels are sesame, egg and an egg everything bagel.    “New York style bagels are very plump, they have got a nice chew, they have a nice sweetness to it, usually from barley malt,” he explains. “They have a nice crust when you bite into it, but it's soft and chewy in the middle.”   Evan Fox shares the Yeastie Boys origin story, along with his personal bagel journey: from developing a love of bagels at a young age - it was his go-to after school snack in Arizona - to discovering NY bagels, when was a touring musician. Fox also talks about what makes a good bagel, playing with pop culture - they recently created a custom menu for a partnership with Netflix's “Nobody Wants This,” the bagel's place in the mainstream, and more.      Check out YeastieBoysBagels.com and follow @YeastieBoysBagels on Instagram.   For more from Taste Buds, subscribe on iTunes and YouTube, follow @TheDEBMethod on social media, and go to JewishJournal.com/podcasts.

We discuss big brewery competition, consumer loyalty versus promiscuity, the importance of good branding and how Yeastie Boys like to approach theirs to make it NOT boring, as well as shine a nostalgic light on the UK's beloved social institution, the good old English pubs. Joining us this week is Stu McKinlay, Founder and "Benevolent Dictator" at Yeastie Boys Beer. After working in Public Health for 15 years, Stu thought it was time for a career change in 2008 when he kick-started Yeastie Boys, originally in New Zealand and Australia and then in the UK in 2015. Yeastie Boys has now become what he and the team like to call “the world's smallest multinational brewing deliciously irreverent beer”.The conversation takes us through Stu's epic life journey so far: from being an aspiring golfer to acting in Lord Of The Rings where he met his future wife and business partner, Fritha, to then working in Public Health and eventually founding Yeastie Boys Beer, a career choice which Stu thought would make much better conversation at dinner parties ;)We also talk about how Stu got the company started, why he's built it the way he has, why he wants to keep his team small and family-like as well as reveal his big partnership deal which will put Yeastie Boys Beer on shop shelves all over Europe! And ofcourse, we work through our staple BWB questions to find out how the entreprenuer in Stu has dealt with all of the challenges along the way.Check out Stu McKinlay's recommendations:All Songs Considered - NPR PodcastModern Love Podcast - New York Times"Where Should We Begin? Mental health has long plagued many sectors, but particularly those who choose to talk the path of hospitality. And - as we discovered from our recent mini-series The Under Beer Belly of #BrewersLife - there are many black dogs on the shoulders of bar staff, brewers and business owners alike. Throw an unprecedented global pandemic into the mix of a pre-existing storm and who knows what the long term prognosis will be for the well-being of those who choose to make and serve alcohol for living. Having had several rounds of counselling myself and being fascinated with human physiology, the topic of mental health in my line of professional work has been close to my heart for many years. I’ve both experienced the effects of mental ill-health and been a front seat spectator of colleagues and friends who have both suffered at the hands of depression, anxiety, and the like over many years. Whenever I’ve heard people speak out on the subject, which - let’s face it - often gets swept under the rug, I’ve said a yes and amen to anyone championing that cause. One of such people is none other than Stu McKinley from the Yeastie Boys. Stu is the kind of person you want to work for. Friendly, approachable, down-to-earth, and mindful about mental health, workplace well-being, and cultivating an environment by which you would willingly give above and beyond to. Stu is also a big advocator of mental health over the years, and in this episode - a discussion we ran out of time for during our last podcasting, which took place on a cold, dark evening within the womb-like taproom belonging to Saint Mars of the Desert - we talk about everything from the coronavirus pandemic and pubs reopening, to mental health, working remotely, and adopting good communication skills. --- TODAY'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY SSV Limited From tanks to full brewhouses SSV Limited has got you covered. Beer N Biceps Podcast

This is the first podcast that I've done alone. Just Matt, no Todd. The reason? In September 2018 I moved from London (technically Watford) to Nottingham. After several tear-fuelled discussions with our respective partners, Todd was not allowed to come with me and live in my shed. So until I work out a way to record podcasts over the phone (not gonna happen) I'm going to try and go it alone. This first episode is titled "Why I Quit Personal Training". Why I Quit Personal Training In High School I picked Sports Science as a subject, and got a "B" in it. I then took Sports Science at college where I gained a BTEC National Diploma. I then studied Sports Science at London Metropolitan University (stop laughing). While getting my degree, I took my level 2 and level 3 personal trainer qualifications, and became a fitness instructor. After a year of fitness instructing I finally became a personal trainer. I stayed in that profession for seven years. The decision to quit personal training was not one I took lightly, but it was a calculated risk. Looking back, I'd say it has paid off. But it is still hard to judge. I am currently setting up my online coaching program, so I am not fully out of the industry. But my days of getting up at 5am to go to the gym are over (not that I did many 6am starts when I was a PT). Hopefully, this podcast episode will shine a light on why I made that decision. Deep Fake by Yeastie Boys When I was doing the podcast with Todd, we spent half the time talking about beer and half the time talking about biceps. Hence the name. I still enjoy drinking beer and talking, but I'm not 100% sure what the structure of these new podcasts is going to be like. I certainly didn't talk about this beer for half the episode. Deep Fake is a Vienna lager from New Zealand Brewery Yeastie Boys. I've mentioned Vienna style lagers before, specifically in my blog post on Beer in Mexico (which you really should check out). I went to New Zealand in 2012, and their craft beer scene was already kicking off. I remember going to a converted church that now sold a selection of craft beers and awesome food. It was so different from the NZ bars I had seen before. Yeastie Boys have a big following in New Zealand, and a growing audience here in the UK. Worth checking out. Podcasting Alone It was weird doing the podcast alone, I still found it difficult to stay on topic! At least that hasn't changed. I'll see how the podcast goes. I still enjoyed doing it (even if I had to record it twice). Let me know what you think, and remember: Direct all complaints about Todd's absence to Todd. Tell him why abandoning his friends and family for beer n biceps is a smart move.

Yeastie Boys isn't your conventional brewery. They span the northern and southern hemisphere, operating out of the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia, their products are readily available in national supermarkets, and yet they don't own a brewhouse of their own. This week we talk to the benevolent dictator of the Yeastie Boys, Stu McKinlay, about moving his family from New Zealand to brew their beers at Brew Dog and establish beers like Gunnamatta and Digital IPA. Now, Yeastie Boys has a head brewer and brews out of Dark Revolution Brewery as well as across the country, collaborating with the likes of Thornbridge, Abbeydale Brewery, Vocation and many more. Also, Nick shares some exciting news from SIBA Beer X...!

Good Beer Hunting

Today’s guest hails from Wellington, New Zealand. Stu McKinlay—along his business partner, Sam Possenniskie—founded Yeastie Boys in 2008. Stu had also been running a homebrew supply company called Liberty Brewing, but eventually sold it and put all of his energy into brewing. Instead of building their own brewery, the Yeastie Boys decided to focus on their brand. After developing their recipes, they had them brewed under contract at the Invercargill brewery on New Zealand’s South Island. In 2015, they sold equity in the brewery through crowdfunding, raising half a million dollars in just half an hour, with investors from all over the world. New Zealand has a population of four and a half million people. That’s almost half the population of London alone. So in order to make full use of this new found investment, McKinlay relocated his entire family to the UK and began the process of turning Yeastie Boys into an internationally recognized brand. As well as managing exports from New Zealand, Yeastie Boys also began contract brewing their core range in the UK, forming a partnership with BrewDog along the way.  Relocating to the other side of the world to grow your business is a huge deal, so I was keen to speak to Stu about the motivations behind this and how he thinks his brand can find relevance in a foreign marketplace.

We also recently received a release about the "world's first smartphone-controlled home-brewing machine". Today we received an announcement from Yeastie Boys advising that next year they will be crowd funding expansion into Europe. I have mixed feelings about the whole crowd funding thing. On one hand, it is an excellent way for new, small and non-traditional businesses to leverage the consumer demand and passion for what they are doing. On the other hand, there is an element of hype and hubris creeping in to the craft beer world that, when combined with a new, loosely regulated funding model, has the potential for disaster. With Yeastie Boys' Stu McKinlay being a great observer of the craft industry and always willing to have a frank chat, Yeastie Boys announcement seemed a great chance to chat about Zen and the art of crowd funding.
