Steve brews his take on an Irish Stout in honor of his big dog, Buddy.
On this highly anticipated episode of Tall Boy Radio, your favourite beer-loving duo, Beans and Gaz, are joined by a special guest – Beans' very own brother, Jon! The air is thick with anticipation (and perhaps a hint of stout) as the three embark on a comprehensive taste test of four classic stouts, all vying for the coveted "Tall Boy Radio Favourite Stout" title.First up to the metaphorical chopping block is the creamy, malty Mackeson, a traditional milk stout known for its sweet, almost chocolatey notes. Will its comforting familiarity win over the panel, or will its sweetness prove too much for the discerning palates of Beans, Gaz, and Jon? Expect lively debate as they dissect its aroma, mouthfeel, and finish, with Jon offering his unique perspective as a relative newcomer to the world of serious stout appreciation.Next, the Irish contingent makes its first appearance with Murphy's Irish Stout. This iconic brew, often described as lighter and less bitter than its main competitor, promises a smoother, more approachable experience. The hosts will be paying close attention to its subtle coffee and caramel undertones, and whether its renowned drinkability gives it an edge in this highly competitive lineup. Will it be the dark horse that surprises everyone? Then, the undisputed king of stouts, Guinness Original, steps into the ring. This is where the real drama unfolds. Will the classic, robust flavour of Guinness, with its distinctive roasted barley notes and dry finish, live up to its legendary status in the eyes of our expert panel? Expect detailed analysis of its iconic cascade and creamy head, with perhaps a few humorous anecdotes about past encounters with the "black stuff." This is the benchmark, and the pressure is on for it to perform. Finally, a wildcard enters the arena: Dorothy Black. This lesser-known stout, often praised for its rich complexity and intriguing flavour profile, offers a potential curveball. Beans, Gaz, and Jon will meticulously explore its unique characteristics, which could range from dark fruit notes to a hint of liquorice or even a smoky undertone. Could this underdog snatch victory from the jaws of the more famous contenders, proving that sometimes, the best things come in unexpected packages? As the tasting progresses, the banter flows as freely as the stout. Expect plenty of good-natured ribbing, insightful observations, and probably a few mispronunciations. They'll compare and contrast each stout, discussing which one they'd reach for on a cold winter's night, or which one would best accompany a hearty meal. The tension will build as they each reveal their scores and deliberate on their ultimate favourite. But wait, there's a whisper of a secret entry, a mysterious fifth contender that promises to be a game-changer! Just when you think the contest is decided, Beans reveals a shocking curveball: a Guinness float! Yes, you read that right. The classic stout meets vanilla ice cream in a bizarre yet potentially brilliant concoction. Will this unexpected, almost sacrilegious, fusion be a stroke of genius or a culinary disaster? The hosts' reactions, ranging from utter disbelief to cautious curiosity, are sure to be a highlight of the episode, providing a truly unforgettable and potentially messy climax to this epic stout showdown. Tune in to Tall Boy Radio to find out which stout reigns supreme and if the Guinness float is a revelation or a regret!tallboyradio.com

Standard-strength Porter and Stout styles such as American Porter, English Porter, Oatmeal Stout, Milk Stout, Irish Stout, and some American Stouts feature roasty flavors and aromas from the presence of roasted malts. These grains are roasted similar to how coffee beans and cacao beans get roasted, and take on many of the same flavor notes—coffee and chocolate are two common flavor descriptors for these beer styles.Beers in these styles tend to cast a wide net when paired with chocolate and can work solidly with a wide range of chocolates, making them good to have on hand for impromptu pairings. The trick here is transcending the good pairings to find the great ones. The versatility of beers in these Porter and Stout styles make them good choices if you're hosting friends for an in-home beer and chocolate pairing. If you don't have specific courses planned, one of these styles will work with a number of different bars and allow your guests to find some easy combinations. In this bonus episode, David Nilsen explains which types of craft chocolate to seek out and which to avoid when pairing with standard-strength Porters and Stouts. You can read more about Porter and Stout styles here. You can order my book Pairing Beer & Chocolate on the Bean to Barstool shop or on Amazon.Check out David's new book Pairing Beer & Chocolate: A Guide to Bringing the Flavors of Craft Beer and Craft Chocolate Together.Follow Bean to Barstool on social media!InstagramFacebookPinterestSign up for host David Nilsen's newsletter to get regular updates!

The day is finally here. We are putting Guinness and Murphy's Irish Stout head to head in a blind taste test. There has been a lot of talk about whether or not Guinness is merely a marketing engine that has pushed the other stouts out of the way, or if it really is the best beer in the world. Today we will find out.
The boys drink and review Pigweed's homebrew Irish Stout, then invite John Wayne Jew onto the show to speak about the month in woke (at about 4:00). The silliness of woke-ism is almost unbelievable. P&C and their special guest discuss some of the obvious lunacies, including the following. Some Canadian police recently encouraged residents to leave their car keys outside so thieves can steal cars without any violent confrontation. After the destruction of the Key bridge in Baltimore, some wokesters want a name chance, since Francis Scott Key doesn't meet modern moral standards. A Democratic representative says black should be exempt from taxation to make up for past injustices. NPR hired 50 new interns. Only 5 of them were white males. On the positive side, some companies are pulling back on DEI and other woke policies, but it's not clear if that's a significant trend.
While our main focus here at BAOS is craft breweries, chatting with the folks who take care of the ingredients is just as important. Colin Byrne of Le Labo, a yeast company based in Quebec, joined Cee and Nate to chat about all things yeast, the lineup of beers all used Le Labo yeast so it was great to compare and taste different beers side by side that use the same yeast, they touched on the differences between dry and liquid yeast, how house yeast comes about, how yeast is propagated and reused, the differences between yeast companies, and talked about his work with a new contract brewery in Montreal, Passenger. They crushed some killer beers with Le Labo yeast, including Passenger The Sea To Sky West Coast IPA, Siboire Discipline Non-Alcoholic IPA, Passenger Malinovka Czech Pils, Overflow Cross Walk Dry-Hopped Pale Ale, Breton Irish Stout, Kichesippi Sasquatch Schnitzel Vienna-style Lager, and Passenger The Fire Pine Porter. This was fascinating - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

This week I visited with Jeff and Shari Bailey at Auburn Acres Hop Farm in Auburn, Ohio. They started growing hops in a small section of their property for their home brews early on, and after 8 years they have grown it to 1 acre featuring hop varieties such as Triple Pearle, Vista, Chinook, and Triumph. During our sit down we talked about everything that is involved in running a hop farm including the prep work in the spring to post harvest. We also focused on their newly opened event space which is two barns joined together that date all the way back to the late 1800's. During the show we also got to sample some of the beer from local breweries that are using their hops. In recent years, there has been talk of a potential "National Divorce" in the United States, a separation of sorts that would see the country split into smaller, more ideologically homogenous regions. In Episode 51 of our podcast, John and Wes have a "kitchen table" conversation about the pros and cons of this idea. They touch on the controversial comments made by MTG, and explore the possibility of reconciliation in our country. Over a couple of drinks, including Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey and Murphy's Irish Stout, they delve into the nuances of this complex issue. Their candid conversation is both thought-provoking and entertaining, and we invite you to join in on the discussion by sharing your thoughts in the comments.

This week as Bob and I continue our month of beers from the UK we take on the most famous category, well at least on St. Patrick's Day, the Dry Irish Stout. A beer that is often misunderstood and completely miscategorized by the novice beer drinker. Contrary to many people's beliefs this beer is not thick, chewy, and sweet. Instead the dry Irish stout presents a light to medium body and finishes very dry. So, grab a beer, sit back and enjoy our Hijinx as we unravel the amazing Dry Irish Stout. Style examples: 1. Murphy's Irish Stout 2. North Coast Brewing Old #38 Stout 3. Pizza Port Seaside Stout · ABV: 3.8-5.0% · IBUs: 25-45 · Color: 25-40 Our sample beer for the week: Guinness Draught 4.2% 45 IBU Beer as described by brewer: Swirling clouds tumble as the storm begins to calm. Settle. Breathe in the moment, then break through the smooth, light head to the bittersweet reward. Unmistakably GUINNESS, from the first velvet sip to the last, lingering drop. And every deep-dark satisfying mouthful in between. Pure beauty. Pure GUINNESS. Guinness Draught is sold in kegs, widget cans, and bottles. The ABV varies from 4.1 to 4.3%. Guinness Extra Cold is the exact same beer only served through a super cooler at 3.5 °C Support the show by doing your Amazon shopping through our affiliate link. What do you think of someone who sends her love to herself on Valentine's Day? P&C think that's ridiculous. Love is outwardly directed, not inwardly. * Brandon and the Chinese Balloons. Was this the most embarrassing thing for the U.S. in decades? We showed the whole world that we're indecisive and incompetent and that we overreact when we're caught with our pants down. A total embarrassment. * The non-binary soprano. Pigweed took the sprouts to an orchestral performance to expose them to some genuine art. The soprano was wonderful. But ... it was a they/them, and the program was full of all kinds of confusing gibberish. * Liberal tells. What words or phrases immediately tell you that someone is a liberal? Undocumented immigrant. Always talking about gender. Everything is explained by hate or bigotry. Safe spaces. Decolonization. Problematic. Personal pronouns. Dog whistles. Privilege. Racist. Sexist. Homophobe. Transphobe. Triggered. * Beer fasting. You think beer fasting means giving up beer. But P&C are traditionalists. They're going to give up everything except beer for a few days, to see what it was like for the Paulaner monks in the old days.

We also had two guests, Jio and Nestor, both 21-year old's. We helped these younglings on the way of craft beer and showed them why Tickles ain't no b***h. Jio talks about his first real o s**t moment overseas in the US Air Force and Nestor and Jio share drunk moments about each other. Cheers. The boys drink and review O'Hara's Irish Stout, then celebrate March 17th. They do a quick review of Irish history, starting back in pre-history, through St. Patrick, the Vikings, Brian Boru and the English occupation, and up to modern times. They ask why is Ireland divided north and south, and wonder about the demise of the IRA. They also discuss the two spellings of whiskey, the potato famine, St. Patrick Day customs, Irish beer, and how much Irish blood Pigweed and Crowhill have in them.
This go round we do not one but two booze reviews with Bushmills and an Irish Stout, followed by a brief history of St Patricks Day and some new technology.
Enjoy the classics at Ironshield Brewing We're bringing you one from our backyard this week! If you're a Georgia beer nerd you may know the name Glen Sprouse. If you don't know his name then you probably know some of his breweries. The old timers may recall Phoenix Brewing which opened in Atlanta at The Prado in 1996, slightly less older timers likely know 5 Seasons that took over the space in 2001. Sprouse was part of both of those ventures. He stepped away from brewing for a while before opening up Ironshield Brewing in Lawrenceville, GA. The brewery features classic European styles including Seven Sisters Munchner Lager, which was a staple on the taps at 5 Seasons. With the addition of Jason Carroll to the team some true Irish beers have hit the taps. Carroll came to America from Ireland where he brewed at Guinness's Open Gate Brewery, among others. In addition to their Ironshield brand the brewery also contract brews under Big Kettle Brewing and expects to brew 30,0000 barrels for their customers in 2022. Welcome back Lorelei Hefeweizen Ironshield offers several returning seasonals, like Lorelei Hefeweizen which returns this weekend. (Release party March 26th, 2022) We got a sneak preview of this one and it's one fine Hef. Next up is Warhammer Maibock in late May. We're all in for that one on the name alone. Although contract brewing is the largest part of the brewery's business right now they are working diligently to grow the Ironshield brand. If you're a fan of classic ales and lagers do yourself a favor and check them out. In this episode, Rum Guy Dave joins Josh for Irish beers which are not Guinness. Josh pours the O'hara'a Irish Stout from the nitro can and had a beer, cheese and leek soup. Dave opens the and has Wexford Irish Style Cream Ale from a nitro can with a Sheppards pie. These beers go really well with the conversation they have about pairings. I hope you enjoy.
Time to boil some potatoes and crack open a pint of your favorite Irish Stout in honor of St. Patrick's Day! In this episode, Scott tells the true story of the origin of the term "Boycott," and the guys discuss some successful and not so successful boycotts of the past. In this episode's New Slang segment, Steve explains the origins of "Bussin" and introduces us to not one, but two Tays (Scott adds a third Tay for good measure). Listen now to find out why the word "Bussin" could be considered taboo for hillbillies like Scott to use. Speaking of hillbillies, the second term in the St. Patty's Day episode is "Hillbilly." In this segment, Scott explains why he's had to update his favorite racial slur. But first the guys discuss eponyms, which is a term which comes from the name of a person, and try and decide what they would like their eponyms to be.
