Did the Governor pull a boneheaded move? Does a new national policy affect you? What are the best things to do in Annapolis? Who can stir the pot and who can calm it down? Tune into The Maryland Crabs and find out. Maryland's ESSENTIAL Podcast!
We've got three months to go before we vote for a new governor. And subsequent to the big-party primaries in July, most Marylanders are thinking that they face a stark choice limited to Democratic and Republican candidates who represent the very best or the very worst of the two parties, depending on how you look at it. But there ARE other voices out there. In this podcast, Tim sits with two of the more interesting voices out there, 1) Jerome Segal, who is founder of Bread & Roses Socialism, ran for Governor in the Democratic primary, and is now running for President against Joe Biden, and 2) David Lashar, the Libertarian Party candidate for Maryland Governor this fall. It was a good coversation between three people with different political views but a common passion for civil debate on both general philosophy and specific issues.
We've entered election season with just slightly over three months until we vote for a new governor. We're a solid-blue state that does not shy away from electing moderate Republicans. So the two major parties generally suck the air out of the room, leaving little for other candidates. That means that we rarely get to hear new ideas and perspectives. Tim sat down a couple of days before the primaries to chat with two gubanatorial cadidates...Jerome Segal, a Socialist who ran on the Democratic ticket (and is now running for President of the United States) and David Lashar, a Libertarian who ran for Congress during the last election. It was a good conversation between three people with different perspectives on politics who may agree here and there.
This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it's a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20....we don't have any kind of plan. In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake! It's not the Christmas season until Paula Poundstone comes to Rams Head on Stage ! This year, she will be in town for two shows on December 18. Tim and Paula are now best friends (probably) since they chat around this time every year. This time, we covered surviving the COVID lockdown, kids and social media, Twitter, cats (which is de rigueur at this point), and the release of her new album, "Paula Goes to College (for one night only)." We also talk more about her hilarious weekly podcast, No One Listens to Paula Poundstone. Links: Tickets Paula's Website Paula's Facebook Paula's Twitter

In this episode, Tim talks with Jordan Foley, a Naval Academy graduate, still on active duty, who founded Chow and completely eschews sleep.
When you are tired of Zoom podcasts and the weather is beautiful and there is a big picnic table outside--you get together in PERSON and record a beercast! This week, Cassie, Lauren and Bill from Katcef Brothers Inc. are in the flesh and we relish getting socially distant together! What's on tap this month? Football, seltzers and the warning that there will be peppermint and gingerbread flavored ones on the horizon (yuk). Bud Light Platinum now has a seltzer too along with an alcohol free Bud Zero. We also touch base on the Golden Goat Ultimate Bud Light Tailgate Giveaway. Details are right here and the odds are good! Despite the lack of events, there is a lot going on in the world of beer. And speaking of events--the Military Bowl tells us that they are planning to move forward so ... stay tuned!
Just because our local Oktoberfests have been cancelled along wth the real Oktoberfest is no reason that we can't start thinking about the delicious fall beers and the team at Katcef Brothers Inc teases us a little bit with a Spaten-Devils Backbone collaboration. We also hit on Cutwater's international tequila award and marvel at how well Bud LIght Seltzer contines to do with the intro of three nw flavors--pineapple, cranberry, and grapefruit. September 18th is Global Beer Responsibility Day and I am searching Hallmark for a card... but locally, you want to stay tuned to Eye On Annapolis and Katcef Brothers for a fun promotion this fall that could score you a wild tailgate party....when we can do that again! :( Enjoy and cheers!

Travis Pastrana never rests. If he is not racing, jumping, building a stunt, or chasing down his two daughters, you can probably be sure he's working on something new. And we caught up with him to find out! Enter Circuit 199 in Sudlersville. It's a state of the art racing facility to train top drivers and to teach the new batch. It's a Progression Park where FMX, BMX, and skateboarders can hone their skills and take them to the next level. And it's a Pump Track and skills course to promote fitness to youth using the track for bicycles, skateboards, or scooters. And of course there is plenty of other entertainment planned as well. When Travis brought Nitro Circus here in 2017 it meant the world to him to finally perform at home. And now he wants to continue giving back to Maryland--his home. Circuit 199 could open as early as next spring, but the target is to be open by 2022. Have a listen and get excited! The Class of 2020 is ending their high school or college life in a weird time. The job market is questionable. The stock market is questionable. And we are in the midst of a pandemic. Without a doubt, it is a tough time; but also without a doubt, our young adults graduating this year will overcome this and thrive--we're counting on it. And today we have some help. Sarah Ryan is the Head of Community Outreach for SECU (formerly known as the State Employee's Credit Union) and she has perhaps the greatest gift we can give our graduates--some financial thoughts to savings and the future. We talk about the work SECU is doing in the community and for their members (it's pretty easy to be a member); but she gives some solid suggestions for gifts for today's graduates that will change their financial world! Last September, we spoke with Larry Bradshaw who is the CEO of National Lutheran Communities & Services and the man behind the project now known as The Village at Providence Point in Annapolis. A lot has happened since then and today, we check in with Bradshaw as the project seems to be headed into the final stretch of the approval process. Today we learned that they has submitted their plans to the City of Annapolis after working with the Stop Crystal Springs (opposition group) and the City to address most of the concerns. There are two remaining concerns that are still undecided as it is a decision (guidance) that needs to be provided by the City. If all goes well, Bradshaw thinks that construction might be able to start in the early part of 2022. While on the same property, this is NOT anywhere close to the same project as Crystal Springs. Along with a change of names to The Village at Providence Point, this project has been downsized in the number of residents and in the general footprint of the project. Have a listen! When you hear the term "cyber security" you immediately think of large companies and governments. But if you own, or are involved with, a small business or organization you need to consider it as well. Have a listen, you might be surprised where the vulnerabilities lie--I was.
We've been stuck in our houses for the past five years now...or at least it feels like it. As every possible commercial has mentioned in the past few weeks, "we are in uncertain times." We're sick of hearing that. Of course, we're sick of a lot of stuff right now. So how do you fight through the negativity and make the whole situation manageable and, dare we say it....enjoyable? Tim talks with Dr. Tom Muha, founder of the Propel Institute and weekly columnist for the Capital for the past thirty years, about how to change your frame of mind to meet this unprecedented challenge. If you ever told me that we'd do a podcast about the importance of the 2020 Census and somehow it morphed into a discussion about the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Philly Cheesesteaks, I'd have never believed you! But it happened! Have a listen to the important parts about how critical it is to respond to the 2020 Census! Senator Mary Washington joins me today on the phone to talk about it. I like beer a lot! But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine. For two months in a row, we are off the rails, but with good reason! First, there's a pandemic! Second, this was all recorded from a Zoom call. And third, most all of what we wanted to talk about has been canceled or postponed! So, we punted and talks about coping, about what Budweiser is doing from a corporate level to help out America. And what Katcef Brothers is doing to help out our own community. Let's just say that Betsy Ross has NOTHING on these guys! Please have a listen!
We are all in this together! As businesses are (for the most part) shuttered, we wanted to catch up with Steve Samaras from Zachary's Jewelers to talk about a video series he has created and to find out how Zachary's is doing during the COVID-19 Pandemic. If there ever was a man who sees the positive in a tough situation it is Steve who was burned out of his store 15 years ago the day after Thanksgiving, survived the recession of 2008 and now the COVID-19 virus. Aside from keeping all of his employees working, to cutting Constance Polamalu (who joined us on the call) loose to develop a new e-commerce business model with virtual appointments, while maintaining the Zachary's model of customer service. But more importantly, with some time on his hands, Steve and his wife Challie have been visiting their favorite places around town and explaining why there is such love--a One Love for Annapolis. If you are a bit down about this pandemic, have a listen, and be sure to check out the videos on Steve's Facebook Page --the link is below! Videos: https://bit.ly/OneLoveAnnapolis
We are in uncharted waters, folks. Between cable news and social media, there is an avalanche of information, innuendo, and speculation coming in. It's exhausting and scary. So John and Tim decided to practice some social distancing and call a bunch of people to talk about what's going on over Facebook Live. It was a busy one. Go to All Annapolis on Facebook to watch Saturday's broadcast. We started with Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot to see what the state has been doing up to this point and what is planned next. Steuart Pittman, Anne Arundel County Executive, was up next to talk about business assistance as well as public safety, followed by Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley who let us know what this this means to our tourism-based business community. Katie Redmiles of Maryland Hall for the Performing Arts introduced "Pay It Forward to the Arts" to help both businesses affected, as well as our arts community. Monica Alvarado, owner of Bread and Butter Kitchen in Eastport, talked about what they are doing to help the community and their employees during this business shutdown. Heritage Baptist Church, on Forest Drive, has always been front and center when it comes to meeting the needs of the community, and this time is no exception. Pastor Scott Shelton talks about their food pantry and the best way people can contribute. What does this mean for businesses? Jared Littman, owner of K&B True Value and former Ward 5 Alderman, talks about what they are doing to serve the community as an essential business and what he is doing to protect employees. Small business owners are being hit particularly hard. Denise Pearson, owner and proprietor of Paradise Float Spa in Eastport, has shut down completely until this crisis ends. What does this mean to people in her shoes? Jeff Jacobs, owner of the iconic family business, Carrol's Creek, has also shut down restaurant for the duration. Some of his employees have been with him for decades, and wait until what you hear what is doing for them! And finally, we end on a positive note when we chat with Kimario Ballyntine, a server at 49 West, located in Inner West Street. Yes, he's out of work amidst a global pandemic, but he is incredibly upbeat and positive, and his attitude is infectious! In a good way. We're talking weed again! Caroline Phillips joins us for the fourth time (even though we said third when recording) to talk about the National Cannabis Festival coming to RFK on April 18th. Now in it's 5th year, the festival has grown from a single day with 5,000 attendees to a two day affair with a FREE policy summit on the Friday April 17th to the festival on the 18th expected to draw more than 25,000 advocates, educators, legislators, and those just looking to learn a lot more. Yes it is a fun time, but as the push for legal cannabis moves across the US, there are more and more questions and a greater need for education! We also hop on the phone with two industry experts....Lucas Hale from Curaleaf, a national company that is involved with every step of marijuana from growing to dispensing to distributing. And also, Warren Lemley from Peake Releaf which is a locally owned dispensary in Rockville, MD. Both were a wealth of information and both will be at the festival on April 18th! As to the festival, this year you can expect more advocacy, more education, more music, more vendors, more food, and pretty much more of everything. Have a listen and get all of your information on the National Cannabis Festival website! Note to self: The cannabis industry is very punny! LINKS: National Cannabis Festival Peake Releaf Curaleaf

City Dock in Annapolis has been studied to death. About the only thing that everyone can agree upon is that a parking lot is not the best use. Last year, after a political firestorm placed City Dock on an endangered watchlist by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the parties came together. The City of Annapolis, the non-profit Historic Annapolis, and all of the various constituents (92 of them) have been working for nearly a year to re-imagine the area and are about to release that plan for adoption and implementation. This plan has a great chance of working for a number of reasons. Have a listen as we talk about it with Eileen Fogarty and Bill Kardash who are the co-chairs of the City Dock Action Committee! We all have bucket lists. Tim wants to find proper New York pizza in Maryland. John would love to find a podcasting partner who isn't allergic to work. We can all dream. But "100 Things to Do in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore Before You Die" by Susan Moynihan is the ultimate Maryland bucket list! Susan moved to Annapolis when she was 13, and her best coming-of-age memories are here. She moved to NYC after college, but Annapolis was always home, albeit for shorter bits of time: Christmas break, two weeks in summer, spring or fall weekends as work and life allowed. In 2018 she moved back to Annapolis, and found her hometown familiar, but different. She wanted to get to know it on a deeper level, so she went to her go-to: writing. She spent six months researching this book, driving all over Annapolis and the Eastern Shore, talking to old friends and making new ones, revisiting longtime favorites and searching out surprises. It's controversial. The HPV vaccine. Some say it will prevent cancer. Others are not so sure. In the summer of 2018 (41 episodes ago) we spoke with Josh Mazer, an Annapolis resident, who questions the vaccine's effectiveness, the studies behind it, and the manner in which it is marketed. His episode was controversial to say the least. We were contacted by the producers of the 2014 film, Someone You Love: The HPV Epidemic refuting much of what Mazer said. We offered to do an additional podcast from their point of view; yet never received a reply. But there are two sides to each story. So here we are! In the past year, Mazer has continued his research and has more doubts and questions. We brought in Dr. Michael Freedman from Evolve Medical Clinics to balance it out and offer a medical perspective. This episode, is a little ok, who are we kidding, it's a LOT long, but compelling as the two confront and rebuke each other. In the end, the controversy continues and the general consensus is that the HPV shot (like any vaccine) should be a decision made by parents and their children's doctors. One important takeaway is that we all agree that pharmaceutical companies should NOT be incentivizing medical practitioners to sell their drugs! In May of 2017 we spoke with Larry Bradshaw who is the CEO of National Lutheran Communities & Services and the man behind the project now known as The Village at Providence Point in Annapolis. Today, we check in with Bradshaw as the project starts to gel up and move through the approval process. Today we learned that they are accepting deposits (more than 100 so far) and construction could begin in early 2021. They have addressed the four main issues their opponents have cited--traffic, environment, drainage, and tree canopy. And they have been working with the City to address their most recent submission and the comments surrounding it. While on the same property, this is NOT anywhere close to the same project as Crystal Springs. The new Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson might be new in town, but he is a seasoned veteran when it comes to law enforcement, as he spent twenty years in the Baltimore Police Department, working his way up from a officer walking the beat to colonel. Chief Jackson marks a change in tack by Mayor Gavin Buckley who wanted a chief who could connect with the community and identify the subtleties of policing a town as diverse and unique as Annapolis. John and Tim sat down with Chief Jackson to talk about where he came from and what he sees as his role as Annapolis' top cop. How will his strategy be different from his predecessors? What does community policing look like under his leadership? Why would he agree to sit down with us, considering The Curse of the Maryland Crabs in regards to police chiefs? Can Tim hold his gun?
