Grab your kazoos and join us as we dive into today's episode, "The Voice of Tinker Jones" (directed by none other than Sean Penn's father, Leo Penn!).This Season 1 classic reveals the origins of the infamous bell (is it for Church? Or is it for School?!) that we all know and love. While you might think this is just a "fluffy family-friendly episode," it's actually a profound parable about children setting a better example than adults and showing empathy and acceptance toward those with disabilities. Sound deep? It is!We'll discuss Tinker Jones himself, played by the legendary Chuck McCann, and reflect on another beloved character that we will never see again—something that seems to be a recurring theme on Little House. Then, see what "Far Out Space Nuts" and "Here's Boomer" have to do with this episode. Confused yet? We'll chat about Sean Penn's appearance in this episode, with Alison sharing some fantastic stories about him. Plus, we'll touch on the development of Rev. Alden's character, Pa's strange compliance with Mrs. Oleson, Alpha Male dominance ruining tea time, and how the child actors of Little House mirrored the storyline. Pamela also shares her perspective as a kid watching this episode.Alison continues to kill our dreams by explaining how the bell was "made", and Dean crushes them further by reminding us that the bell wasn't even real and wouldn't have been heard all over town. WHY, Dean and Alison, WHY?!Finally, what in the world is baby Carrie saying?!Ring the Bells of Heaven, y'all, and enjoy this feel-good episode!

We lost two big names connected with Classic Doctor Who this week: episode writer and novelist Chris Boucher, and actor Jane Sherwin. This episode features audio clips from Boucher's "The Robots of Death", and of Sherwin (with Frazer Hines and Graham Weston) in "The War Games". My guest this week is Jason McLaughlin (@JangoMac72), one of my fellow co-hosts from The Trap One Podcast, and the impresario behind Bearded Geek Toy Reviews over on YouTube. "UK Jason" offers us a tour of his recording studio and his impressive array of genre memorabilia. Topics discussed this week include the great Saturday morning TV shows of Sid and Marty Krofft, specifically "Far Out Space Nuts" and "Land of the Lost". UK Jason also takes his turn at "20 Questions", with surprising results. We also have Listener Mail, Jason's review of the "Stones of Blood" novelization, and much much more. Jason's latest Trap One guest appearance can be found here... and Jason's Trap One panel on the David Fisher "Stones of Blood" novelization can be found here. "Doctor Who and the Stones of Blood" features cover art by Andrew Skilleter. Doctor Who Literature is now a member of the Direction Point Doctor Who podcast network. TV in the 70's had its share of Sci-Fi even before Star Wars. Some of it may have been cheesy and kitschy, but it was loads of fun! Jay and Shua find a treasure trove of Disco-ey science fiction and don their sparkly bell bottoms on Enjoy Stuff   Did you grow up in the 70's? If so, you probably watched more Sci-Fi on TV than you remember. If you didn't, you gotta listen to us explain what inspired the great stuff we have today!    News -A cool dad make his kid a homemade Star Tours in their garage! -Get ready for a bunch of GameBoy games coming to the Nintendo Switch Online -The Matrix 4 gets a mind-blowing trailer What we're Enjoying Star Trek: Lower Decks has beamed its way into Shua's heart. This series may be a parody, but it honors all the Trek shows with references and care. Check it out on Paramount+. Jay has been watching some Jackie Chan flicks. Supercop was the third in a series of Chan films that showcased his stunt work and karate ability. Oh wait, they all did that... Enjoy TV Sci-Fi has been around for generations. And it really gathered some steam after Star Wars came out in 1977. But there certainly was some interesting stuff on television in the early 70's. Saturday mornings had some great kid-centered cartoons like Sealab 2020, but Sid and Marty Krofft had some live action classics like Land of the Lost, The Lost Saucer, and the wacky Far Out Space Nuts.    Ark II and Jason of Star Command used a slightly bigger budget to enhance their effects, but they had their share of kitsch too. As kids, we didn't care. We loved the imaginative adventures.    In syndication, we got some anime like Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers. Star Trek the Animated Series kept the Trek Dream alive.    Prime time TV kept trying to figure out exactly what Sci-Fi was with early showings such as Land of the Giants, Space: 1999, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. But as George Lucas unleashed his vision upon the world, the later 70's showed us Sci-Fi juxtaposed in just about every genre of TV entertainment.    Comedies like Mork and Mindy and Quark kept us laughing. Hour long cinematic stories like Battlestar Galactica, Logan's Run, and Buck Rogers experimented with episodic drama mixed with cheesy 70's humor and music.   There were so many different shows to choose from! And it helped keep us involved and inspired to create all we have today.    Do you think 70's Sci-Fi is groovy? Let us know in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com

Huntsville, Alabama will celebrate the anniversary of putting the first men on the moon this Saturday — probably Houston and Cape Kennedy will too — but TechnoRetro Dads kick off the half-century celebration Monday morning with 77 minutes of lunacy as the 15th episode of the 7th season airs on the 15th day of the 7th month.  The zaniness all started when JediShua’s doorbell rang as he was expecting a birthday present to arrive…   Science Lesson: Apollo 11 On 16 July 1969, a Saturn V rocket launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida at 9:32 AM, beginning the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.  Four days later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin successfully landed on the moon, putting an end to the “space race” between the United States of America and the Soviet Union.  The world celebrated the landing confirmed by the immortalized words, “The Eagle has landed,” only to be surpassed by Neil Armstrong’s statement as he placed his footprint on the moon’s surface, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”  Although some still debate whether the moon landing was genuine or an elaborate hoax, the excitement of those watching and listening on July 20, 1969 briefly united the world as mankind reached their greatest height to date.   TechnoRetro Arcade: Lunar Lander Ten years after the first manned mission to the surface of the moon, Atari capitalized on the public’s continuing interest in the moon and space with the vector-graphic arcade game Lunar Lander.  The original 1979 game was made of simple graphics constructed of white lines on a black background as players tried to land their lunar module on small, level sites on the surface of the moon before running out of fuel or crashing.  Points are earned for each successful moon landing until the player’s supply of fuel or “lunar landers” are exhausted.   Saturday Mornings: Moon-Adjacent Cartoons  In the ‘70s and ‘80s (even the ‘90s), lots of spacetastic cartoons (not necessarily moon-oriented).  JediShua, shazbazzar, and Jovial Jay talk about Bravestarr, GoBots, Gilligan’s Planet, Space Cats, and Yogi’s Space Race.  A live-action show called Far Out Space Nuts gets an honorable mention because of its relationship to Gilligan’s Planet (Bob Denver).    Let’s Go to the Moonvies: Apollo 13 Ron Howard’s film based on the third mission to put men on the moon is an amazing combination of historical facts and Hollywood effects that continues to stir the emotions of audiences today.  The 1995 film is mostly faithful to the events that transpired before, during, and after the “successful failure” of the Apollo 13 mission of 1970 that prevented Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) from completing their mission and landing on the moon.  SPOILER ALERT: Even though they didn’t land on the moon, these astronauts successfully returned to Earth after circling the moon.  Also noted are other “moon landing” movies like First Man, The Right Stuff, and Airplane II: The Sequel.    Thanks for tuning in to TechnoRetro Dads, EarBuds!  While you’re waiting for a brand-new episode, why not read (or lazy read) Michael Witwer's Empire of Imagination?  But don’t forget to rate and review TechnoRetro Dads on iTunes, share us and with us on social media, get TechnoRetro merch at TeePublic, and join discussions on Discord about toys, cereal, games, movies and/or shows from the ‘70s and ‘80s by giving the ‘Dads your feedback via voice mail at (209) 878-7323 or sending us your mp3dback via electronic-M to podcast@TechnoRetroDads.com.   Share and enjoy.

This week we wrap up our tribute to all the pop culture stars we lost in 2018. (And just in time, since our 2019 list is already growing...) From the music world, we say goodbye to a Cranberry, a Bay City Roller, way too many drummers, the guy who wrote the Wonder Woman TV theme song, and the Queen of Soul. From animation and kids TV, we recall some of the folks behind SpongeBob, Sesame Street, Far Out Space Nuts, the California Raisins, and Schoolhouse Rock. Our list of writers and directors includes people who worked on Star Wars, The Princess Bride, Mazes and Monsters, Howard the Duck, and yes, Cop Rock. Then we have our beloved 1980s wrestlers, including members of the Hart Foundation and the British Bulldogs, our favorite Soviet bad guy, and one of the original Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Plus we remember stars from radio, comedy, science, and lots more. (If you thought we'd forget the host of Commander USA's Groovie Movies, you must be new around here.) So grab a coffee and join us. Next week we'll get back to Flopcast business as usual. (That is, giggling about stupid stuff.)

Tysto film commentaries

Join me for a great romantic comedy/thriller from 1978 starring Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. Hawn fends off the world with a yellow umbrella. Chase embraces the world clumsily. Dudley Moore tries to screw the world unsuccessfully. The pope thinks The Mikado is supposed to end with dead guys hanging from the mast of a ship from another production. Maybe he just thinks it's "far out." I compare the film to other romantic comedies and other thrillers as well as to Far Out Space Nuts. I don't talk quite as much in this one, but I think the observations are a little richer insights into theme, character, and plotting, and not narrating the scenes so much. I forget to mention that the title is a play on words, since the assassination attempt occurs during a stage performance—a comic opera, actually, but Foul Opera would sound silly. I did slip in a mention in editing that the setup is borrowed from The Man Who Knew Too Much.
