Was J.M.

On Episode 137 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis celebrates the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of Jason of Star Command! This was one of the few live-action Filmation shows which aired on Saturday mornings for kids from 1978 thru 1980. It was the sequel series to Space Academy (another Filmation show). Catalyst is a Creative Industries podcast, from Chapman University. Each episode features Chapman students who have completed a Podcasting course through the Center for Creative and Cultural Industries at the university. Students who had no podcasting experience or technical ability in the genre before taking the course were able to contribute all the segments to Catalyst this season with the goal being that they will take this ‘hands-on' experience and carry it over to the launching of their very own series. Each episode of Season 8 will feature one to two different interviews conducted by CCI students, exploring different aspects of the Creative and Cultural Industries. Opening our show this week, we hear an interview by Olivia Creech who was joined by Dr. Rebecca S. Hall, a curator for the USC Pacific Asia Museum and cultural consultant for Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon. Dr. Hall talks about the winding road she took from Kansas City Art Institute to her PhD program at UCLA in Art History, and how her love of research and textiles flourished and influenced that journey. They delve into Dr. Hall's career as a museum curator and break down the exciting opportunity of working on an animated feature film and what the term “cultural consultant” actually denotes. They conclude the conversation while discussing Hall's favorite exhibition she has curated, “We Are Here: Contemporary Art and Asian Voices in Los Angeles,” and its significance for local Asian communities. Our second segment this week features an interview with Disney Television animation editor, Christopher Gee, by Peter Timberlake. Gee gives great insight into what an animation editor does and what he loves about the creative process of editing. Peter learns about Gee's climb at Disney to eventually work on shows like Kim Possible, Monsters at Work and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and the difference is between an animation and live-action editor. They conclude the interview with a discussion of the challenges and joys of working for a TV animation division of a large company such as Disney, and some practical advice for those interested in the pursuing animation editing.

WE LOST BUZZ! We looked all over Disney+ and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is nowhere to be found! Hosts Joshua Noel and TJ Blackwell discuss the 2000 TV Show, "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command"! Why is Tim Allen not Buzz Lightyear in the new movie? Why was Buzz Lightyear of Star Command" canceled? Why wasn't Patrick Warburton Buzz Lightyear in the new movie? Let us know what you thought about the old Buzz Lightyear cartoon on our website: systematicgeekology.org . *CORRECTION: Joshua said that Jesus' point with saying the coin belonged to Caesar was that Jesus believed the Hebrews should be using different currency. Jesus' actual point was that the coin belonged to Caesar but the land belonged to God. Star Command, come in. We have a new transmission. That's a Wrap is back with an all-new episode! Today, the duo discusses the all-new Pixar film: Lightyear! Does the movie shoot for the stars? Or does it miss the landing? Find out in our new review!
I saw LIGHTYEAR at the theater this Sunday with my family. Tickets for the four of us were just under $65, so by my figuring, we were just four of around 3 million people who saw that movie during its opening weekend. And while that missed projections, it's still a pretty healthy opener for an animated movie. But should we evaluate it as “just” an animated movie? That may not be fair to the movie, to Pixar, to other animated features or to the legions of Buzz Lightyear fans who felt a little bit cheated by the movie. And if not cheated, that at least confused (or possibly misled).Robert Meyer Burnett and I discussed three letters from Imagination Connoisseurs who expressed their concern and disappointment about LIGHTYEAR – and while we didn't agree entirely, we didn't disagree either. Why is that? Give the podcast a listen to find out.As always, I'll be writing more about all this on the ROADTRIPPIN' blog later today (and will probably post it this evening). You can check it out on our website: https://postgeeksingularity.com/roadtrippin-with-rmb/And remember, you can always send us a letter. Just click on the "Contact Us" button in the main navigation of our website at postgeeksingularity.com and you'll be able to send us a message to let us know how we're doing and what's on your mind.We look forward to hearing from you.I invite you to listen in on my weekday conversations with my friend and business partner, Robert Meyer Burnett, as we talk about the things we love: great movies, inspiring television programming, nostalgic genre entertainment, and pop culture. This episode was recorded on June 21, 2022.
Writer and animation connoisseur Joan Ford, (DC Super Hero Girls, Tiny Toons Looniversity), joins to discuss Pixar's new release, LIGHTYEAR starring Chris Evans, Keke Palmer, and Peter Sohn. The Angus MacLane-directed animated science fiction film is a (sort of) prequel to the Toy Story franchise, presented as a 1995 adventure movie that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy. But does the movie-within-a-movie live up to the saga's gold standard? We get to the bottom of this question, stopping along the way for some trusty MNAM diversions into Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, Child's Play 3, Ain't It Cool News, the lost roles of Tom Cruise, real life Tim Allen encounters, and of course, the AMC Stubs A-List. So buckle up, Star Command rookies, for a podcast that goes to infinity... and beyond!
"Come in Star Command." In todays episode Jaden & Ike sit in space with Liam Myers, as they talk Lightyear, Ketchup, and try and remember anything. Lightyear set the stage for an easy cash grab, and they dive into whether this was heartless, or heartful. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/backstage-cinema/support

The Love Of Cinema podcast is proudly supported by Kia. Film critic Amon Warmann talks to the director and producer of Disney Pixar's latest film, Lightyear - in cinemas now! Real life astronaut Tim Peake pops by for a little bonus chat too. In this not-quite prequel to the beloved Toy Story films, Chris Evans (Marvel's Captain America) plays the real Buzz Lightyear – the man that Andy and Bonnie's beloved toy was based on – as he jets off for an intergalactic adventure (with an adorable robot companion). But there's trouble ahead: when he finds himself marooned on a hostile planet, he must try to find a way back home with the help of some ambitious – and haphazard – new Star Command recruits, while also confronting a villainous threat to the universe's safety.

This week on It Was a Thing on TV we look at sham marriages, outer space and Corinne Tate from Soap acting alongside Danny Thomas. First, McCormick from Hardcastle and McCormick and Audrey Griswold #3 star in a sitcom about marrying someone to ensure they aren't deported from the country. Of course, hilarity ensues. The best moment of the show came at the very end of the final episode, when everybody knew the writing was on the wall. Next, outer space science fiction was everywhere in the late 70s--in your movie theater, on public television, in primetime, even on Saturday mornings. The crew at Filmation gave us their take on space adventures with Jason of Star Command, which featured a veteran from an outer space classic. Finally, Soap was riding high in 1980. Its producers gave who would likely be the 6th most popular cast member on that show her own vehicle, with a cast that includes a comedy icon and a future comedy icon. Wasn't it so brave for Will Smith to defend his son's friend's girlfriend at the big event for out-of-touch, famous weirdos? Very cool. Also Demi Moore is just a collection of nanobots, who knew? TV in the 70's had its share of Sci-Fi even before Star Wars. Some of it may have been cheesy and kitschy, but it was loads of fun! Jay and Shua find a treasure trove of Disco-ey science fiction and don their sparkly bell bottoms on Enjoy Stuff Did you grow up in the 70's? If so, you probably watched more Sci-Fi on TV than you remember. If you didn't, you gotta listen to us explain what inspired the great stuff we have today! News -A cool dad make his kid a homemade Star Tours in their garage! -Get ready for a bunch of GameBoy games coming to the Nintendo Switch Online -The Matrix 4 gets a mind-blowing trailer What we're Enjoying Star Trek: Lower Decks has beamed its way into Shua's heart. This series may be a parody, but it honors all the Trek shows with references and care. Check it out on Paramount+. Jay has been watching some Jackie Chan flicks. Supercop was the third in a series of Chan films that showcased his stunt work and karate ability. Oh wait, they all did that... Enjoy TV Sci-Fi has been around for generations. And it really gathered some steam after Star Wars came out in 1977. But there certainly was some interesting stuff on television in the early 70's. Saturday mornings had some great kid-centered cartoons like Sealab 2020, but Sid and Marty Krofft had some live action classics like Land of the Lost, The Lost Saucer, and the wacky Far Out Space Nuts. Ark II and Jason of Star Command used a slightly bigger budget to enhance their effects, but they had their share of kitsch too. As kids, we didn't care. We loved the imaginative adventures. In syndication, we got some anime like Battle of the Planets and Star Blazers. Star Trek the Animated Series kept the Trek Dream alive. Prime time TV kept trying to figure out exactly what Sci-Fi was with early showings such as Land of the Giants, Space: 1999, The Six Million Dollar Man, and the Bionic Woman. But as George Lucas unleashed his vision upon the world, the later 70's showed us Sci-Fi juxtaposed in just about every genre of TV entertainment. Comedies like Mork and Mindy and Quark kept us laughing. Hour long cinematic stories like Battlestar Galactica, Logan's Run, and Buck Rogers experimented with episodic drama mixed with cheesy 70's humor and music. There were so many different shows to choose from! And it helped keep us involved and inspired to create all we have today. Do you think 70's Sci-Fi is groovy? Today, we're getting psyched for the premiere of Big Hero 6: The Series with executive producers Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle. Schooley and McCorkle are certainly no strangers to the world of animation and Disney. They are the co-creators of Kim Possible and worked together on Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Hercules: The Series, Aladdin: The Return of Jafar, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, and many others. They also worked for DreamWorks on Penguins of Madagascar and Monsters vs Aliens. On this episode, we talk about working at Sesame Place, bringing Big Hero 6 to the small screen, doing the impossible and getting almost the entire original cast to return, and creating shows with true cross-generational appeal.
Bonus: More of our interview with Sid Haig. We talk to him about Jason of Star Command, THX-1138, Busting, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and so much more.Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
