Creativity... What does it mean to be creative? I asked the large language model and this is what she said. that are original and meaningful. It involves the process of combining existing knowledge, skills, and experiences in novel and imaginative ways to produce something unique and innovative. Being creative means having the capacity to think divergently, break away from conventional patterns, and approach problems or tasks from fresh perspectives.AI chatbots aren't creative yet. But humans are. Humans are great and we wanted to talk about that. Maybe we ran our mouths too much in this one? I mean, what's new, right? We're always running our mouths. I think the difference here is I had a chance to edit it out and I still didn't. Jokes on me. Will the bots ever possess creativity? Life of the School Podcast: The Podcast for Biology Teachers
In this episode, Lee and I have an informal chat about the end of summer and the start of the school year on the two very different planets we live on (Massachusetts and Texas). We will do our best to avoid political landmines… let's see how this goes. Show Notes: How do you feel getting the school year started? Lee: Cautiously excited. I'm ready to meet kids, do some science with them, and help them love learning. I'm ready to try ungrading with my IB class. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't anxious about starting school in an environment where masks cannot be mandated per governor's orders. I also can't distance my kids as we are being made to seat kids in groups of 4–my district drank the Kagan strategies koolaid over the summer, and we are expected to use the training we got. Aaron: Feels like a bit of a black box What are some of your “getting to know you” activities that you use with students? Lee: I'm having kids create a Flipgrid to teach me how to pronounce their names, and we are doing an activity with Oreos--Do Double Stuf Oreos Have Double the “Stuf?” Aaron: I'm going to use Flipgrid for Introductions and I'm writing something up using Algae Research Supply as a hook for one of my first units. Any Ideas for podcast discussions we should have in the coming school year? IEPs, 504s and accomodations How to teach Self-Efficacy How to collaboratively plan with colleagues Designing revision into your curriculum How do you teach cross curricular classes? If you haven't hear of The Mandela Effect, you're actually sorta lucky. This is a phenomenon that confuses the heck out of everyone who tries to understand it. It is something that makes us question our memory...which is never fun. But with that said, I thought it would be fun to discuss some Mandela Effect topics in this episode and see if any Zillennials remember these pop culture things differently than what they actually are. The Berenstain Bears, Nelson Mandela's Death and even Double Stuf Oreos. That's right, STUF. Not Stuff. So sit back, relax and get ready to be confused. Because that's all I was during this entire episode.

About half an hour before the program started I saw a question raised by Zakir Hussain, a Muslim apologist, so I spent the first half hour in Jude looking at the context and the manuscript evidence so as to answer the objection-question. Then we looked at the subject of -Deepfakes- and the law of God, focusing on cosmic justice, and then transitioned into some current events and the role social justice has taken in producing division and misery in our land. Oh, talked a bit about Ed Stetzer's social justice posturing as well. 90 minutes.

My guest this week is Dr. Joel Minden, a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of anxiety. We focused on the ideas from his excellent new book, Show Your Anxiety Who's Boss (affiliate link). You might remember Joel from my first discussion with him back in 2018. He has a great way of explaining his CBT approach and why it works, which is probably why that first discussion was one of the most listened to episodes so far. As you’ll hear us discuss, Joel's emphasis is on finding effective long-term strategies that can change our relationship with anxiety in a big way, rather than on trying to find tricks to use in the moment to just get through spells of high anxiety. He stresses the importance of letting our values determine what’s important and how we live our lives, rather than allowing anxiety to have that power. We also discussed the ongoing coronavirus, and the high anxiety that so many of us are dealing with related to the pandemic and the strange place we find ourselves in. Joel’s research-tested approach has a lot to offer at any time, and definitely in the current crisis. He and I also talked about: The possibility of feeling guilty about not being as badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic Making the transition to online psychotherapy The timing of the release of Joel’s new book The three big ideas in Show Your Anxiety Who’s Boss Finding options for how you respond to anxiety The problem with trying to eliminate or control anxiety Biased thinking that can drive anxiety (“anxious fictions”) The STUF acronym for experiences of anxiety: sensations, thoughts, urges, and feelings The drawbacks of focusing on reducing anxiety in the moment, vs. longer term strategies Parallels between therapy and medication for short- vs. long-term anxiety reduction The downsides of trying to distance oneself from anxiety through avoidance The value in taking meaningful action when feeling anxious The powerful role of acceptance in dealing with anxiety Redirecting away from a focus on anxiety and toward actions that matter to us The distinction between unproductive distraction and productive redirection The power in realizing we can still function when anxiety is high How to get started when anxiety is really overwhelming The value in starting small when facing our fears Giving ourselves proper credit for moving through anxiety, no matter how “small” the step Whether we can fundamentally change our automatic anxious reactions Check out Joel's blog on Psychology Today: CBT and Me. Here's the book about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that Joel recommended (affiliate link): Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life, by Dr. Steven Hayes. Joel Minden, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist, director of the Chico Center for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, diplomate of The Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies, and adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology at California State University, Chico. We would like to recommend that you pick & eat but do NOT rate along (since you're not a certified snackologist) with this week's snack, Mega Stuf Oreo Os cereal. Leave the rating part to the professionals. Play! ▶

The Oreos strike back! For the first time since last year's infamous Oreo Tournament, the You Tried Dat?? crew dives into America's favorite cookie. They try three new flavors - Most Stuf, Carrot Cake, and Dark Chocolate - and discuss hospital food, cannibalism, and running across a field.
Rick and Dana discuss their second double date with another couple. Dana gives her expert opinion on the new Most Stuf Oreos after Rick surprised her with a package of them. In the spirit of the season, we are giving thanks for our bountiful harvest. In this case, it’s our bountiful harvest of Oreos. We have six different varieties, from classic to megastuf to peanut butter, and we are trying to settle the question, “How much is too much stuf?” And don’t worry. There isn’t too much time spent in the show just chewing Oreos directly into the microphone. Notes: Oreos Double Stuf Oreos Oreo Thins Megastuf Oreos Uh oh! Oreos Peanut Butter Oreos Red Velvet Oreos Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie Oreos S’mores Oreos Birthday Cake Oreos And now we have six basically uneaten boxes of Oreos that we have to do something with. Oh, well.
