We want your advice, friends. We're in the early — EARLY! — stages of planning The Flood's next album, which we hope to record later this year.Right now we're just starting to figure out what tunes we might want to record in the project, and we would really appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. For instance, here's a tune we like from last week's rehearsal that our manager, Pamela Bowen, captured on video. What do you think? Is this one we should take to the studio? About the SongThis great old Jerry Leiber-Mike Stoller composition, which The Coasters recorded in 1957, was featured in an earlier Flood Watch article. Click here if you want to read its backstory.A minor hit for The Coasters, the tune was resurrected nine years later when a little-known group called The Chicago Loop took it to No. 37 on the Billboard charts. But in the Floodisphere, we were much more impressed with a different pressing of the song a year earlier. Flood favorite folkie Tom Rush's 1965 self-titled debut Elektra album included a rocking rendition accompanied by Bill Lee, John Sebastian (of The Lovin' Spoonful) and Fritz Richmond (of The Jim Kweskin Jug Band.)Anyway, Give Us Your Thoughts! But back to The Flood's studio project, this will be our first new album since Paul Martin put together Speechless in 2021, and it will be the first to feature our newest Floodsters, Danny Cox and Jack Nuckols. We'd love to have your help to planning it. Send us your suggestions — just drop an email to Charlie at designbybowen@gmail.com — and we'll keep you posted as the work continues. This is a public episode. In this limited run series, I will be exploring the pioneers that have shaped and influenced the EDM we have today. In this episode I will be featuring “Cascada”. “Cascada” is a duo consisting of German-British singer Natalie Horler and German DJ and Producer's DJ Manian and DJ Yanou. The group was formed in 2004. Their most notable track was “Everytime We Touch”. Here is a listen here. "Everytime We Touch" was released in 2005 but didn't gain widespread success until 2007. The song's memorable melody and lyrics made it stand out. With its mixture of Eurodance, trance and pop it appealed to a large audience. This combination resulted in the track being frequently played on radio stations in the U.S; something that had previously not happened for Eurodance or trance artist. "Everytime We Touch" blazed the trail for other such acts to gain mainstream recognition. That's it for this week's Vinyl's from the past; now let's get back to more music. Lexer: Start – 18:54 and End – 26:04Lexer, a German DJ and producer, began his musical career at the age of 18 with the release of his track "My Princess". This song was highly praised within the melodic house genre. By 2019, he had made a transition from melodic to deep house with the 2015 album “Nowehere Else”.

I was lucky enough to attend the very first PASS Summit in 1999. It was a brand new event, and while not overly large, it was busy and crowded in the basement of a Chicago Loop hotel. I had the chance to meet Kalen Delaney there and ask her a question. That was the highlight of the trip, but I also learned a lot about SQL Server 6.5 and 7 there, spending all the time I could in sessions and hanging out after each one listening to the questions others asked the speakers. Since then, I have been lucky enough to go to most of the Summits. The event has changed a bit, and I look forward to going to see friends each year and re-connect with them. I've also loved meeting new people, often those I've corresponded with online. Each event has been memorable and exhausting at the same time. It's a busy week, and I can sometimes feel overwhelmed. However, it's always felt like it was worth the trip. Read the rest of Looking Forward to the PASS Data Community Summit 2023
Norah joins Ben this week for a discussion about recursion, and speaking of… Happy Second Anniversary to us! Norah has just seen another loud musical, and Ben is champing at the bit to talk about the game he's been playing lately. They start their circuitous loop with some Canadian music industry trivia, a correction for the dystopia episode, the definition, and unintentionally making fun of the Scottish. More loop centric topics include… making jewelry, an area of downtown Chicago, digital music, computer programming languages, rollercoasters, mathematics, Norah's Summer job in college, and “time loop” movies. On the topic of video games, Ben explains the importance of engaging gameplay loops, his stance on game reviews, and his experiences with the game Deathloop by Arkane Studios. 00:00:21 - Ben's recursion joke fail, and Norah sees the “updated” musical Tommy 00:02:42 - Other musicals… American Idiot and Jagged Little Pill, and “also known as music” 00:04:27 - Interesting Canadian music idiosyncrasies, and a dystopia episode correction 00:07:02 - 2nd Anniversary, weird duck callback, and a heartfelt THANK YOU to listeners! 00:09:30 - The definition according to Web and Ox, and Ben adds back some superfluous stuff 00:12:17 - “So I Married an Axe Murderer,” vegetarian haggis, loopholes, jewelry, and the loupe 00:15:05 - Jump rings, perspectives of helixes, the Chicago Loop, and US state opinions 00:18:57 - Ben is mistaken, what is in “the Loop,” the Chicago fireworks, and M3Ps? 00:21:17 - Audio formats, songs on a loop, “My Weekly Mixtape” shoutout, and recursion 00:23:30 - Norah is above BASIC, FORTRAN 77, and other loops in computer programming 00:25:08 - Marry the FORTRAN teacher, middle school is NOT grade school, and classrooms 00:27:45 - Mental math, Adderall, first looping rollercoaster “Flip Flap Railway,” and clothoids 00:32:26 - “Shuttle Loop” rollercoasters, strange loops, the Möbius strip, and Socrates 00:35:10 - A child's perspective on math, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the U-505 00:37:07 - Submarines are cramped, the coal mine, model trains, and going in to video games 00:39:30 - Ben explains gameplay loops, a rare dad joke from Norah, and Donut County 00:43:25 - Match 3 game loops, Norah understands, and Ben mentions Deathloop 00:45:19 - A discussion about movies, television, and books using the “time loop” concept 00:48:07 - Celebrating “Groundhog's Day,” and “The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle” 00:49:34 - Ben undersells the movie Looper, and other “living the same day” movies 00:51:35 - The premise (relatively spoiler free) and game mechanics of the game “Deathloop” 00:54:03 - Discrepancies in user and news outlet reviews, and the start of Ben's critique 00:57:33 - “Redfall,” how skill trees work, a disclaimer, and the importance of intelligent AI 01:01:00 - Seven, Norah comes clean on playtime, some balancing is needed, and a bug 01:03:17 - Ben nitpicking about reviews, know your reviewer, and closing the show! Live from the Heart of America—I'm Steve Gruber—ready to deliver an inclusive and diverse discussion on the most important topics of the day—giving you better analysis and insight that anyone else—shining a spotlight on the cockroaches of the swamp—and delivering truth and justice just when hope was starting to fade— Here are the 3 Big Things you need to know to start today— Number One— In New Mexico—no limits on abortions and in Oregon a new law would allow a 10 year old to get an abortion without parental consent—enough already! Number Two— The battle over transgender athletes competing in high school and college has reached critical mass—and the insanity is eating up a California Senate candidate— Number Three— Just last week the Democrat National Committee made its selection for the site of the 2024 convention— The Democrats as I said at the time—picked the perfect metaphor for its entire party—a party that is based on failing liberal ideas—failing ideas like defund the police and give people more and more and more tax payer funded government assistance—and take away any accountability— So of course, Democrats chose the American War Zone—better known as Chicago—a once proud symbol of American greatness that has been reduced to a place I would not go on a bet— It is a city so violent that literally hundreds of people have been gunned down there already this year—and its only mid-April— It's a city where violent crime is so out of control that they tossed out the incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot—BUT instead of changing directions—Chicago voters signed up for more chaos, violence and destruction— In fact over the weekend—the violence that is often associated with the notorious southside—came spilling into the high rent districts— Hundreds and maybe even a couple thousand teenagers hell bent on destruction came spilling into the heart of the famed Chicago Loop—this is where the well heeled shop at high end stores and eat at fine restaurants— BUT this weekend was for the destruction of that myth—as cars were destroyed, tourists were attacked—and of course more shots rang out— And who is to blame? Not the criminals of course—not the parents or the politicians that give this violent mob a pass—and suggest if only there was more equity—then we could do better—these people are destroying our cities and our country is not far behind—and they of course point fingers at everyone—except themselves— And this is not isolated to Chicago by any stretch of the imagination—this is happening in many American cities— Boeing and Tyson fled from Chicago—BUT from Seattle to Atlanta—companies are saying; no more and packing up for safer venues— And despite the tidal wave of evidence—that every single one of their policies are failing—the Democrats are incapable of telling the truth about any of it— In the end—the DEMOCRATS just focus on tired excuses—that have no relationship to reality—a world where there is always a Republican to blame and someone or something to call racist

Monday’s remarks sought to highlight what McCarthy called Biden’s “irresponsible” economic policy after the speaker last month accused the commander-in-chief of being “missing in action” from debt ceiling talks. The speaker in March suggested cutting non-defense spending back to pre-inflationary levels and introducing more work requirements for some welfare programs. Biden rolled out a $6.9 trillion budget proposal the same month, which would have increased the national debt to $51 trillion over the next decade. In January, the federal government exceeded its roughly $31 trillion debt limit, halting its ability to borrow funds for programs like Social Security and Medicare. Congress last approved a debt ceiling increase in December 2021. Also in January, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the federal borrowing limit will need to be increased by June of this year to prevent a default on America’s national debt. McCarthy said Biden’s unwillingness to negotiate as commander-in-chief differs greatly from his past openness to fiscal reform as a US senator and even as Barack Obama’s vice president. Both the White House and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) compared McCarthy’s push for spending cuts to “hostage-taking.” https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/2-arrested-for-allegedly-operating-illegal-chinese-police-station-in-nyc-sources-say/4247736/ 2 Arrested for Allegedly Operating Illegal Chinese ‘Police Station' in NYC Two people have been arrested by the FBI on allegations they helped operate an illegal police station for the government of China in lower Manhattan. The two are charged with conspiring to act as agents for the Chinese government. The FBI said “Harry” Lu Jianwang, 61, of the Bronx, and Chen Jinping, 59, of Manhattan, were arrested Monday morning at their homes in New York City. "The defendants worked together to establish the first overseas police station in the United States on behalf of the Fuzhou branch of the (Ministry of Public Security)," the FBI said in a statement. In addition to the New York complaint, two other complaints were filed - one against 34 members of Beijing's Municipal Public Security Bureau, and another against a group of 10 people that includes eight Chinese government officials. The common thread in the three complaints - that the suspects allegedly worked to intimidate, harass and threaten "wanted" Chinese nationals inside the United States. Last November, the FBI said it was aware that China was operating a de facto police station in Manhattan, outside of proper procedure or authority, as part of global network of such outposts. It followed a Sept. 2022 investigation by a nongovernmental organization, Safeguard Defenders, which reported there were dozens of such centers worldwide conducting police operations. Chinese officials decried that characterization, saying the "service centers" were volunteer-run and had nothing to do with policing. But the New York Times reported in January that Chinese state media had explicitly described the centers as policing facilities, acting in other countries without collaborating with local authorities. The Times also reported that the FBI had searched the East Broadway facility in the fall of 2022. https://www.businessinsider.com/nancy-pelosi-campaign-pays-man-fundraising-text-lawsuit-2023-4 Pelosi campaign pays Illinois man $7,500 after he sued over 'invasive and harassing' fundraising texts An Illinois man is now $7,500 richer after accusing Nancy Pelosi of violating federal robocalling laws. In October 2022, a Bolingbrook, Illinois resident named Jorge Rojas filed a 13-page lawsuit in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois that accused the former speaker of the House and her campaign of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. That law, which has been found to apply to text messages in addition to calls, applies restrictions to robocalling and requires telemarketers not to contact individuals who've placed themselves on the Do Not Call Registry. "As the Supreme Court has explained, Americans passionately disagree about many things," reads the introduction of Rojas's complaint. "But they are largely united in their disdain for robocalls." According to the suit, Rojas received 21 texts from Pelosi's campaign from November 2021 to July 2022 despite previously placing himself on the registry in 2008 to "obtain solitude from invasive and harassing telemarketing calls." He went on to argue that he "experienced frustration, annoyance, irritation, and a sense that his privacy has been invaded" by the texts. Arguing that the texts constituted "malicious, intentional, willful, reckless, wanton and negligent disregard" for his rights, Rojas sought at least $31,500 in damages from Pelosi's campaign, including $1,500 for each text received. But months later, on February 22, Rojas moved to dismiss the suit against Pelosi. And according to federal campaign finance disclosures made public on Friday, the dismissal came after Rojas received a $7,500 payment marked "Settlement" from Pelosi's congressional campaign. Rojas and Pelosi's campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. https://www.foxnews.com/us/teen-takeover-terrorizes-chicago-hundreds-children-destroy-property-attack-tourists ‘Teen Takeover’ terrorizes Chicago as hundreds of teenagers destroy property, attack tourists Hundreds of teenagers stormed the streets of downtown Chicago, smashing car windows, attacking bystanders and sending panicked tourists running from the sound of gunfire. Fox 32 cameras captured video of teenagers crowding the streets and police seeking to restore order to the area. Large groups of teens were seen blasting music from Bluetooth speakers and roaming in front of traffic, with some attempting to gain access to the city's Millennium Park, which is off-limits to those under 21 after certain hours, and the downtown Art Institute. Some teens in the group began jumping up and down on cars, smashing windows and attacking people inside. One woman told Fox 32 her husband was attacked from the driver side of his vehicle and beaten after a group of teens jumped up and down on the couple's windshield. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Hundreds of police officers assisted by SWAT teams descended on downtown in an attempt to restore order as gunfire was reported multiple times amid the unfolding scene. Police were seen escorting frightened tourists back to their cars or hotels to escape the chaos, and traffic on Chicago's Michigan Avenue ground to a halt as police attempted to restore order. Police say a 6-year-old boy was shot in the arm near the Chicago Loop and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Both were taken to Northwestern Hospital and listed in fair condition, according to a report from WLS. Fox 32 reported that the chaos appeared to be another "Teen Takeover" of the city that was planned on social media, noting that a similar scene played out in Chicago last year. Some local reporters were on the scene to interview some by-standers, including a woman who’s husband was beaten in their car. 'Where are their parents?' The two are charged with conspiring to act as agents for the Chinese government. Many of us grew up listening to The Coasters, the iconic 1950s band that bridged the gap between doo-wop and R&B, that brought humor and sass to the birth of rock 'n' roll. Remember “Yakety Yak” and “Charlie Brown,” “Along Came Jones” and “Poison Ivy,” “Wake Me, Shake Me” and “Little Egypt”? But before any of those tunes topped the charts, it was a lesser known Coasters cut that grabbed us. Picture it: Hot summer, 1957, and into our shiny new transistor radios The Coasters came sashaying into our ears with a sexy little song that said, yeah, she may go to the baker for cake and to the butcher for steak, but when she wants good lovin'? …well! It was a winking and nodding Jerry Leiber-Mike Stoller composition called “(When She Wants Good Lovin') My Baby Comes to Me.”The song, a minor hit for The Coasters, was resurrected nine years later when a little known group called The Chicago Loop took a rendition of it to No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Rock trivia-lovers like to point out this disc because it features a young Michael Bloomfield on the guitar and Barry Goldberg on keyboards. But in the Floodisphere, we were much more impressed with a different pressing of the song released one year earlier. Favorite folksinger Tom Rush's 1965 self-titled debut Elektra album included a version of the tune, accompanied by bassist Bill Lee along with John Sebastian (of The Lovin' Spoonful) and Fritz Richmond (of The Jim Kweskin Jug Band.) Choosing the song was a rather bold move for Rush at a time when some music purists were trying — in vain — to keep the gap between rock and folk as wide as possible. In his liner notes, Tom pointed out that the song was released on the flip side of “Great Big Idol with the Golden Head,” adding, “I am a great admirer of The Coasters.”It was back in the 1970s that Dave Peyton, Rog Samples and Charlie Bowen started playing around with the song because it definitely had jug band vibe going on. Want to hear a fast and furious take from an August night in 1979 (with our buddy Jack Nuckols just killing it on the spoons)? Click the button below:After that, the song went back to sleep in our consciousness for, oh, a half century or so.Then last winter, Randy Hamilton started singing harmony with Charlie on the chorus and suddenly the song was back, evolving into a fine vehicle for cool solos by Danny Cox, Veezy Coffman and Sam St. Clair. March 3, 1940 The Ozzie Nelson Orchestra performing from the Blackhawk Ballroom in Chicago over the Mutual Network, WGN Chicago. The Blackhawk was a restaurant in the Chicago Loop from 1920 to 1984. It served a menu of American cuisine, notably prime rib and a signature "spinning salad bowl," and was, in the early part of its history a nationally known entertainment venue for Big Band music. From 1930 through the 1940s, Nelson's band recorded prolifically—first on Brunswick (1930–1933), then Vocalion (1933–1934), then back to Brunswick (1934–1936), Bluebird (1937–1941), Victor (1941), and finally back to Bluebird (1941 through the 1940s). Nelson's records were consistently popular, and in 1934, Nelson enjoyed success with his hit song, "Over Somebody Else's Shoulder," which he introduced. Nelson's primary vocalist was Rose Anne Stevens, who appeared in the 1942 movie Down Rio Grande Way and Tomorrow We Live. Later in his big band career, Harriet Hilliard replaced Stevens and Harriet's perky vocals added to the band's popularity. Ozzie and Harriet married and went on to family sitcom history on radio and TV with their sons David and Rickie.----(WIKIPEDIA)

She joined Rush Medical Center in 1998, and has served in a variety of roles, including Assistant Dean for Minority Affairs, Director of Medical Staff Operations, and Chief Compliance Officer. She moved over to Rush Medical College, full-time, in 2019, and is now the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, as well as Associate Dean for Admissions and Recruitment. Dr. Boyd, thank you so much for joining me on Admissions Straight Talk. Can you give us an overview of the Rush Medical College program, focusing on its more distinctive elements? [2:07] Sure, I'll be speaking primarily about the medical school. At Rush University Medical Center, we have four colleges dedicated to the health sciences: the College of Nursing, Health Sciences, Graduate College, and the Medical College. It has been in existence since about 1837. It was the first medical school established, actually, in Chicago. It is very focused on clinical care, outstanding clinical care, integrating that with education, research, and community partnerships. We are located on the west side of Chicago, about five miles from the downtown area, the Chicago Loop, as it is called. Our community is a very diverse community, ranging from very wealthy, to the very poor. More recently, our curriculum was changed to become what is described as a flipped classroom, where the students do the learning. The teacher is not in front of them doing didactics, students do the learning, and then they come to class in a group of their peers to share what they've learned, to ask questions. It puts the focus on them as their learners, versus the faculty putting out all of the information. That's changed within the last five years. Probably, one of the newest innovations has been our curriculum. What does the faculty do in a flipped classroom context? [3:45] There are specific courses, so to speak, that the students will learn and focus on for anywhere from four to six weeks like gases, nutrition, etc. But they are given readings and articles and videos, and a variety of ways to learn on that topic. Then when they come to class, there is both clinical faculty, as well as basic science faculty, at the same time. So we combine both the normal and the abnormal, in this case, both anatomy for example, as well as pathology, etc. The students learn on their own, and they interact with each other. It is very important for them to have those oral communication/interpersonal skills to be able to have these discussions. The faculty are there to facilitate that, facilitate the learning, and also to be able to provide individual learning, if that is necessary. But it puts the focus on the student to actually review and learn the concepts. When I went to medical school, we didn't have that. But when you start seeing patients,
