John's out this week, so Emily is joined by reigning TOC champion Paolo Pasco to recap another week of Adam Remsen. Despite some strong play this week, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to Response of the Week, and Paolo keeps his cards close to his chest about his Masters prep. This week's JFAF has us asking, should retirees watch Jeopardy!? The answer may surprise you! Plus, we dive deep on nothing, because Emily forgot to ask Paolo to prepare something. Paolo is here this week but you know where else he is? On the Patreon! For simply supporting the show you can get access to that wonderful interview with Paolo and a bunch of other bonus content including live play episodes, Celebrity and YouTube Jeopardy! reviews, and hell, we even watch a Matt LeBlanc porno and an episode of Cop Rock. Plus, you get a new bonus every month and access to our Discord. Join today at patreon.com/jeopardypodcast. Special thank you as always to The Jeopardy! Fan and the J-Archive. This episode was produced by Producer Dan. Music by Nate Heller. Art by Max Wittert.
The boys are back with another episode of Steven Bochco's Cop Rock. If you're reading this, you know the deal: it's a gritty '90s cop show that also happens to be a musical. Like, a real musical. There isn't much else to say at this point, except that Justin and Steve were very happy to discover that Cop Rock Episode 5, "The Cocaine Mutiny," guest-stars Gina Gershon.Watch Cop Rock Ep. 5 - The Cocaine Mutiny HERECheck out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocksCheck out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com

By this point, you know that Cop Rock is a gritty police TV show that is also, somehow, a musical. And if you knew about Cop Rock before listening to this podcast, it's probably because of this week's episode, “A Three Corpse Meal,” and not because of the insane title.Steve and Justin are finally talking about—and singing along with—“The Baby Merchant (Tots-Я-Us).” It's one of the weirdest episodes yet, dropping the hardcore, real-life police drama in favor of side plots about diets, the illegal baby trade, and two senior citizens going on a date.WE LOVE COP ROCK!Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocksCheck out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com
Crank the theme, Randy! It's COP ROCK time! Justin and Steve are back on the beat to cover the third episode of Steven Bocho's ill-fated, gritty musical cop show COP ROCK. The boys are three episodes in, and they still can't believe their ears and eyes. John is out sick this week, so we are joined by TOC Champion and bona fide WIAJP patron Paolo Pasco! He helps us recap a fun week of games with a record breaking number of cuties + honorable mentions for response of the week. Plus, we get a deep dive on the Rainbow Coalition and we talk about Traitors and movies longer than John would ever allow on a normal episode. Some are saying he's the new John. Are they right?? If you want more of the OLD John, why not head on over to our Patreon to donate? You'll get immediate access to our entire back catalogue of bonus episodes, you'll get access to our amazing Discord, and you'll get the knowledge that you helped John and Emily and warmed our hearts. And speaking of John and Emily, last week, they reviewed the pilot of Cop Rock! How could you miss that? Join today at patreon.com/jeopardypodcast. A Jeopardy! contestant answers a common question on the show with such speed that it becomes a Response of the Year contender as we get a bit of an up-and-down week on the show that features a little 3-game run for Quentian (as Emily spelled it in our show document) and a whole lot of gunslinging. Plus, J! fans want to see a celebrity join the show after Ken goes to a play, John gets a little punchy, and we dive deep on Rosebud and the world of movie prop auctions. If you want to see a lot of horrible TV prop work in action, why not join our Patreon? You can help support the show AND get access to our latest episode, where John and Emily review the pilot of "Cop Rock", the much-maligned, oft-forgotten police procedural/musical written by Steven Bochco back in 1990. It is one wild experience, and you won't wanna miss it. You'll also get immediate access to our entire back catalogue, access to our very fun Discord, and MORE! COP ROCK!! If you listened to our episode about the pilot of the gritty '90s musical cop show COP ROCK, you know that Justin and Steve fell in love with the boys in blue who sing the blues. So they're heading back out on the beat to cover the second episode of this mismatched genre mash-up, titled “Ill-Gotten Gaines.”Will the second episode be as fun as the pilot? Will the songs still come out of nowhere and have almost nothing to do with the plot? Will the cowboy robot make an appearance? WILL RANDY NEWMAN STILL PERFORM THE THEME SONG??Luckily for the boys, the answer to all of these questions is a resounding yes.We plan on covering every episode of COP ROCK this year, so subscribe and don't miss a thing.Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocksCheck out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com
This week, Pop Screen takes you to church. On its release, Aretha Franklin's Amazing Grace became the biggest-selling gospel album of all time, but it was only supposed to be half the story. Originally, it was going to accompany a concert film with the Queen of Soul going back to her roots at an LA baptist church - but that fell through for the dumbest imaginable reason. To find out what that was, join Aidan and Graham as they discuss Amazing Grace's long road to its 2018 release, the reasons why Franklin refused to see it finished during her lifetime, the cameos from two members of the Rolling Stones and a long digression about the show Cop Rock for some reason. We also discuss what makes '60s soul and '70s fashion so appealing, and discuss our favourite secular Aretha songs. You can say a little prayer for us, or you can donate some actual money at our Patreon, where we're about to do a bonus episode about Jesus Lizard lead yelper David Yow. We're also planning two new podcasts about movie franchises and arts and books respectively, and you can still enjoy weekly articles about The Twilight Zone and Doctor Who. Tread Merrily continues with a return to Boston for a Spenser: For Hire episode called "The Hopes And Fears." A chance encounter with Rita near a department store leads Spenser to treat the assistant district attorney to a "Spenserian" Christmas. Matters are complicated when a gang of hockey-masked hoodlums begin a rash of break-in robberies -- they even steal from Hawk! -- a young witness to one of their crimes goes missing, and another is threatened by a member of the crew. Will Spenser be able to solve all of the mysteries and protect his community before they resort to mob justice? Also, will he pull off the perfect Christmas for Rita? Erik and Justin immediately start talking Star Trek and Avery Brooks. Additionally, Erik cannot refer to Carolyn McCormick, who plays Rita, as anything but "Minuet" -- her character from an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Guest stars Seth Green and Nancy Travis prove to be welcome additions to the ensemble. Justin finally recognizes co-star Ron McLarty from Cop Rock. He also geeks out about the presence of Lynn Thigpen. A member of the hockey mask gang inspires the title "Dirty Kenny Loggins." The pair remember the 1980s fruit cake joke and Erik champions star Robert Urich for a surprising Star Trek role.
In the heyday of '90s adult-themed television, gritty cop shows were everywhere, but legendary TV producer Steven Bochco was the only one brave enough to ask, “What if they also sing?”ABC's COP ROCK is a see-it-to-believe-it Disasterpiece and easily Justin and Steve's new favorite TV show. Join the boys as they reopen the cold case of the greatest tonal mismatch ever put on prime-time TV. Experience the whiplash of jumping from a tough-as-nails police procedural to some of the goofiest musical numbers they've ever seen, alongside some of the saddest songs ever put in a musical. There are a lot of “how?” questions when it comes to COP ROCK, but the big one for us is: WHY DOESN'T EVERYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS??Check out all of COP ROCK here!Follow us on Instagram to stay updated about our monthly live shows!Check out more from Justin here: justindodd.rocks Check out more from Steve here: stevejhward.comdrinkgenies.com
Nick is joined once again by film critics Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy for another round of sharp movie talk and box office insight. They review a packed slate of new releases, including Guillermo del Toro's bold new take on “Frankenstein,” the latest entry in the “Predator” saga, the Sydney Sweeney boxing biopic “Christy,” and Jennifer Lawrence's gripping psychological drama “Die My Love.” Later, Esmeralda Leon returns to share stories from the David Byrne concert she just attended — a wild, inspiring spectacle only Byrne could deliver. From there, she and Nick take a nostalgic detour through some of the weirdest, most obscure TV shows of the 1990s, like “Out of This World,” “Unhappily Ever After,” “Teen Angel,” and the unforgettable musical police drama “Cop Rock.” It's movies, music, and misfit television — all in one hilarious, high-energy episode. Tread Perilously concludes the Summer Grab Bag with the third episode of Cop Rock -- "Happy Mudder's Day." Hollander continues his pursuit of LaRusso -- now centering in on Potts and offering him immunity if he testifies against his partner. The mayor receives some difficult news from her image consultants and goes under the knife to initiate a bid for the Senate. Rose hits a breaking point with Gaines as a domestic call turns into one of the stranger musical numbers either has witnessed. Vicki, Ruskin, and Campo take a back seat as guest characters and the chief of police take point in this week's songs. Is it a sign of things to come? Erik and Justin try to figure out the mystery of Paul McCrane's sudden presence on the show. The mayor's storyline comes under scrutiny as actor Barbara Bosson was married to creator Steven Bochco at the time. Justin comes to believe The Shield creator Shawn Ryan watched Cop Rock. Comparisons abound. Guest characters leading the songs seems to prove the premise was already running out of steam. Erik determines Ron Howard's best films. Vondie Curtis-Hall once again proves dependable and the lack of proper area knowledge around the production becomes more and more obvious.
Pilot Month 2025 comes to a conclusion with this entry about a shopping plaza whose occupants communicate primarily through song and dance. It sounds like Cop Rock (see Episode 450), but with significantly more singing and music. The open may give off a different sort of vibe. Regardless, this oddity is the perfect way to close up the pilot vault for a year.
Send us a textRISKYSometimes you gotta say, “What the Fuck” to research, make your move. This week Season 14's penultimate 1x1 is co-host Ryan's pick: RISKY BUSINESS (1983). His reason: TGTPTU normally pairs filmographies of a single director or actor, and the writer-director on this film was so triggered by the experience of having his written, shot, and edited original ending replaced in the final cut that he never directed another film again… or at least not until his second film in 1990 (WTF, Ryan?). This film that would go on to become part of 1980s iconography by first-time director Paul Brickman, who had previously written the Michael Pressman-directed The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training (1977) and the Jonathan Demme-directed Handle with Care (1977) and would later be one of three credited writers on Clint Eastwood's True Crime (alternately known as Speed Zoo) (1999), Risky Business as dark teen comedy and potential Reagon-era satire stars a number of early roles by actors who'd become comedy stars of the 1980s, including as the protagonist Joel's fellow yuppie North Shore friends and entrepreneuring high school seniors in their first film appearances Curtis Armstrong (also known as Booger in the 1980s) and Bronson Pinchot (aka Balki in the 80s). It costars Rebecca De Mornay (later in the 90s known for her roles as a terrible nanny and as Milady de Winter) as the business-savvy prostitute, and has an early movie appearance by Joey Pants (known in the late-90s for taking the blue pill, Ralphie Cifaretto in the 00s, and a Bad Boy 4 life) as Guido the pimp. Oh, and it's also the first time that actor born Thomas Mapother IV, better known later in life by his stage name Tom Cruise, stars in the leading role in a film (but not the first time he danced in his underwear or kissed a female person, if DVD commentary tracks are to be believed). Behind the camera, you have two cinematographers: Eastwood's 70s and early-80s collaborator Bruce Surtees as well as regular Hollywood comedy lenser Reynaldo Villalobos. Pod-favorite Tangerine Dream scores. And the film scores big with first watches by host Tom and guest host Jack and with the Gen X'ers Ken and Ryan. It's a wild ride, so mind your parking brake. In this episode Ryan explains the economic milieu behind the 80's yuppie culture to the two young hosts while drawing comparisons to American Psycho (2000); the two Zoomers discover how to shorten future episodes; and Broom Hilda's creator, whose life strangely overlaps with Ken's past and present, drops by studio. We close out #PrisonMarch 2: Second Offense with an interview with someone who there at New World from the very beginning: editor Barbara Pokras! After graduating from USC (where she went to school with Dan O'Bannon with whom she would work on RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD), Barbara found her way to Roger Corman's newly-formed New World Pictures, where she went to work dubbing voices and assisting director Stephanie Rothman on New World's first ever movie, THE STUDENT NURSES. From there, Barbara worked on a variety of movies Roger shot in the Phillipines, like NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN, THE HOT BOX, and THE BIG BUST-OUT! We discuss what it was like to work on those movies, how Barbara worked her way up to joining the Editor's Union and landing a job at Cop Rock, the short-lived police procedural musical, and why it was her favorite job. We also discuss I ESCAPED FROM DEVIL'S ISLAND, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, and why Wonder Woman was not her favorite project to work on. We could not have been more thrilled to talk with Barbara Pokras, one of Corman's original film school graduates, and we know you'll love our discussion as much as we did! And when you're done, don't forget to pick up her book, Feeding Mrs. Moskowitz, here. In episode 384 of Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into the realm of TV disasters as they share their picks for the 5 Worst Television Shows Ever Made. The lively discussion covers infamously divisive and peculiar series such as Tammy's House Party, The Big Bang Theory, Cop Rock, The New Leave It To Beaver, The Real World, Hogan's Heroes, ALF, Three's A Crowd, Dinosaurs, and Out Of This World. Tune in to hear their hot takes and why these shows earned their infamous spots. In the second half, Tim the Nerd explores two fascinating documentaries: Louder: The Soundtrack of Change, available on Max, which examines music's influence on social movements, and Nothin' But A Good Time, streaming on Paramount Plus, a nostalgic celebration of the glam metal era. Peter Onorati Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson SO FUN! Spending time with Peter Onorati is like going out in the bright sunshine after a month in a dark cave. Such joy! We talked Italy and the wondrous vacation he treated his immediate family to visiting their extended family in towns I've never heard of and can't begin to pronounce. But, I wanna go! Then there was Ravello, Positano, SWAT recognition, Rome, truffles, and a funny one that once made it home. There's funny all over the place with Peter. A great story about Peter's first son's birth and his callback for Goodfellas - how he made the audition his - HISterical! And, a master class on how to make the audition yours… mine… ours… and some brilliant tips on acting, and reacting, in general. He disappeared for about 2 1/2 minutes when his laptop died but came back with so much more fun. Getting blacklisted by Les Moonves, the ER debacle, to Cop Rock, the best, as a non-singing actor hired to die, singing his ass off and becoming the central character of this historic iconic, ahead of its time, classic. Closing with a Miss Yvonne, Lynne Stewart, request, Peter regaled us with his mother/wedding story -so timely as I ready to be the mother of my daughter the bride. I'll be shutting up now. What a great time. Someone, make him the updated, somehow related Columbo! He'd kill it! And SWAT, get hip, his fans want him back! And so do I. Any time! Tread Perilously's summer grab bag continues by finally returning to Cop Rock for its second episode, "Ill-Gotten Gaines." Following the death of unarmed man, Hollander tries to pin it all on LaRusso. Meanwhile, he also assigns Gains to Rose, who is still grieving the death of his partner in the pilot episode. But making things worse, Gaines thinks it is okay to sing Motown classics at Rose. The mayor and the chief continue their cold war. Ruskin makes a fateful decision after talking with Quinn. Also, Rose sings a eulogy to his fallen comrade. Erik tries to compare the episode to the second hour of The Shield. Justin isn't so sure. The pair also end up finally talking about The Acolyte. They try to determine when creator Steven Bochco knew about what was happening at Rampart Division. Justin compares Cop Rock to Tequila & Bonetti and various natural disasters. A wild 1980s sax man appears! James Cameron gets celebrated for his asshole tendencies. The show's status as a bad musical is once again confirmed. Erik declares the name "LaRusso" can only be used by one fictional family. Anne Bobby's career is considered and a musical number based around a suspect line-up becomes a crucial point of conversation.
It's Year Four of Wheel of Randy, and we kick this season off with the one and only Gary Norris, Randy's archivist. Gary has a breadth and depth of knowledge that makes me feel like a noobie, but he's no snob by any means. We talk about his 50-year relationship with Randy; plus Cop Rock, Cats Don't Dance, the could-have-been Jimi Hendrix connection, and how Queen has made sure Gary's collection will never be complete. Spin it!

Nathan and Eppy hit the gym in S3E10 Piece Work. Jim's insurance investigation gig happens to intersect with flashy dresser Murray Rosner (Michael Lerner), a freelancer for the feds who's getting a gun buy together. After a series of paranoid assumptions, Jim takes a beating from the gun-running goons, uncovers the scheme and brings in Dennis for a bust that doesn't happen. Between Chapman threatening to pull his license and Murray's conviction that Jim is trying to take over the operation, Jim has a lot to handle! This fun romp of an episode gives us a memorable character and a lot of great Rockfordishness, a great watch! This week on It Was a Thing on TV we reach a milestone with our 450th episode! First for Episode 449, in an era where game shows were goofy, outrageous, and random, this game show was the goofiest, most outrageous, and the most random. The Cheap Show was ridiculous, messy, and...well...cheap. Sorry for the short episode. There isn't much multimedia out there, nor is there much information about it. Then for Episode 450, Steven Bochco, the genius behind hit shows including Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, and Doogie Howser, created Cop Rock, which was labeled as being revolutionary and potentially changing the landscape of television. Despite tons of promotion, the show ran 3 months and has been deemed one of the biggest failures in television history. Not only do we cover the series as always, but we will feature one song from each episode.
