In Psalm 139 today, we read “Oh LORD you have searched me and known me!”This caused me to recall a conversation with a dear brother who has since passed. He was reminiscing about being a child in England during the 2nd World War. He commented, “I remember searchlights as a boy. Beams of light would sweep across the sky from near where I lived. They were searching for enemy planes, if they found one they would lock on to it and the gunners would try to shoot it down. My wife had gunners right near her house.” We were reminded of this by our reading of Psalm 139 today. “Oh LORD you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up … you search out my path” [Psalm 139:1-3]. But David realizes that God's power to “see” extends far beyond what we do physically. We read, “you discern my thoughts from afar … even before a word is on my tongue …” [Psalm 139:4] In the language young people use today, they would describe as ‘awesome' the thought that God knows our thoughts before we even put them into words. That really is a searchlight on the mind. We cannot limit the meaning to David personally. BUT there is even more than this in what he writes, a wonderful inspiration by God! We read, “For you formed my inward parts , you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made … your eyes saw my unformed substance.” [Psalm 139:13,14,16]. Today, clever men have unravelled some of the secrets of DNA and the human genome. David was inspired to write 3,000 years ago of his “unformed substance,” i.e DNA. Finally, the word ‘SEARCH' occurs again at the climax of the Psalm, Search me O God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts … and lead me in the way everlasting.” [Psalm 139:23,24] Would I, would you, want to sense God's searchlight on your thoughts? If the answer is “No” then should it not also be ‘No' to the question as to whether we want to be led by God in the way everlasting?

[Original airdate: 8/6/24] Mary chats with Holly Varnum of Reasons for Hope in her role as Director of Curriculum Development, writer, editor and proofreader. With a new school year looming, once again we turn our thoughts to how to best educate our kids, in the way that they should go - as individuals made in God's image, male and female. Holly has a love of teaching truth and having a strong biblical worldview. In these times of gender homogenization, what are the hard-wired differences in the brains of men and women? How does acknowledging and living out these differences bring glory to God? Holly has some fascinating insights into our God-given traits and physical characteristics that originate in the brain. In particular, we look at how we learn differently and to celebrate the differences, while the world tries its best to erase them. Thought provoking, mind altering topic! Bible Study Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: . Sermon Notes Psalm 139:13-18 highlights God's power and purpose displayed in the life of every human being, even from the womb! Observation #1: God's power (omnipotence) is seen in how he lovingly and creatively "knits together" each and every person in the womb Observation #2: God's purpose is seen in how he records each and every day a person has even before they are born Implication #1: Because God is the author of life (his power and purpose bring it about), life is sacred from conception Implication # 2: Even though we live with the effects of the Fall (sickness, shame, sinful/unhealthy decisions), God still declares each and every person "fearfully and wonderfully made." Response: praise God for your existence, your life, your body, your purpose! Your very own self is a perpetual reminder and reason to praise God: “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:14 ESV) Sermon Application Discussion Questions: Why do you think the psalmist focuses on God's creative work in the womb? Do you see any connection back to verses 7-12? Compare a theological and scientific description of how life develops in the womb. Do you believe these are in conflict? Why or why not? How is the purpose of a human life determined? Who determines it? Can a life still have a purpose even if a person dies very young? How would you describe the purpose of your own life? According to Psalm 139, why is the life of an unborn child sacred? Is there a place in your life where you need to hear God's Word that you are "fearfully and wonderfully made"? Questions? Do you have a question about today's sermon? Email Randy Forrester ( ).
The Lord sees beyond who you are to who you can be.

Today's Bible reading is Isaiah 40:12-28. Recommend reading Genesis 1; Psalm 139:11-16. God is extremely awesome there's not enough words to describe how amazing He truly is! I'm thankful for His creation and everything He has done and continues to do Amen
Missionary Joe Katvas teaches how everone is fearfully and wonderfully made by God and precious in His sight.
America is facing a major crisis today as we deal with several generations of young people who have been taught that they evolved from animals, and human life is no different than animal life. Because we have devalued life, they are growing up with little or no purpose for living. As a result, we are experiencing the highest suicide rates ever, violence, anarchy, disrespect, looting, stealing, lying, drug and alcohol abuse, and many more destructive behaviors. Paul described it this way in Romans 1:28-32, “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.” This is exactly what happens when we believe the lies of the Evil One and deny the existence of the Holy God Who created us in His image. Psalm 139 is one of the greatest passages in literature about the miracle of human conception and birth. There are several things we have already learned from this great chapter! In verses 1-6, we saw where God is omniscience and that He knows us intimately and we can never deceive Him. He knows our thoughts before we think them. He takes notice of every word we speak and searches us out in our innermost being. In verses 7-12, David reminds us that God is omnipresent and that He is with us constantly and there is no place we can hide from Him! Now in verses 13-18, David declares that God is present at conception and birth, and because we are made in the image of God and God has a special purpose for each person who is born. We live in and with our bodies all our lives, and we know how amazing they are. God formed us as He wants us to be, and we must accept His will no matter how we feel about our genetic structure, our looks, or our abilities. The verb "covered" in verse 13, means "woven together" (see Isa. 32:12), and "skillfully wrought" in verse 15 is translated "embroidered" in Exodus. In the mother's womb, the Lord weaves and embroiders a human being, and abortion interrupts this miracle. What a tragedy! But the Lord did more than design and form our bodies; He also planned and determined our days (v. 16). This probably includes the length of life (Job 14:5) and the tasks He wants us to perform (Eph. 2:10; Phil. 2:12-13). This is not some form of fatalism or heartless predestination, for what we are and what He plans for us come from God's loving heart (Psalm 33:11) and are the very best He has for us (Rom. 12:2). If we live foolishly, we might die before the time God has ordained, but God's faithful children are immortal until their work is done. How can we ignore God when He has given us such a marvelous body and planned for us a wonderful life? Life is not a prison, it is an exciting pilgrimage, and the Lord has prepared us for what He prepared for us. Our responsibility is to yield ourselves to Him daily, ponder His thoughts found in His Word (Psalm 92:5; Isa. 55:8-9), and walk in the Spirit. God thinks of us! (Jeremiah 29:11). Should we not think about Him? God bless!
