Gone are the days of having a zillion steps and certain permissions to do things, and expand into yourself and places. Hint, its not out of the body its in. This may seem redundant, but you would be surprised by how many "healers" or those coming into their self-belief as a healer pay on training to those who claim they "channel," the fifth Marry. FORQ is a harder-edge fusion band that Alex describes as ‘Snarky Puppy adjacent', due to its relationship to one of the founding members, Michael League. Keyboardist Henry Hey formed the band with League in the early 2010s and on this episode, Henry joins Alex along with FORQ guitarist Chris McQueen to talk about their innovative new album “Four (Remixt)”. Henry and Chris explain the creative process behind the album, which is a reimagining of their album “Four”. The band invited producers and musicians, including Alex, to remix the original tracks from the album and the results are wonderfully eclectic. The trio also talk about the differences of playing in FORQ and Snarky Puppy, and the musical curiosity that keeps their music fresh. You can hear Alex's remix “Duck People (No Fly List)” here.FORQ is an instrumental quartet with a dynamic sound and a penchant for sonic exploration. The group is composed of world-class improvisers, but it is their unusually memorable, genre-blending songs that leave the most lasting impression. Originally founded by keyboardist Henry Hey (David Bowie, Empire of the Sun, Jeff "Tain" Watts) and bassist Michael League (Grammy-winning leader of Snarky Puppy), Forq is now joined by guitarist Chris McQueen (Snarky Puppy, Bokanté), drummer Jason "JT" Thomas (Roy Hargrove's RH Factor, Marcus Miller, Snarky Puppy, Mark Lettieri Trio) and bassist Kevin Scott (Wayne Krantz, Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton). They have toured across the US and Europe and performed at international festivals including the North Sea Jazz festival and GroundUP Festival in Miami Beach.Moods & Modes is presented by Osiris Media. Hosted and Produced by Alex Skolnick. Osiris Production by Kirsten Cluthe and Brad Stratton. Editing and mixing by Justin Thomas (Revoice Media). Music by Alex Skolnick. Artwork by Mark Dowd. "Snarky Puppy" are an American instrumental ensemble led by bassist Michael League. The group's formation can be traced back to 2004, after Micheal League's second year at the University of North Texas. He says that he was so bad as a musician he wasn't able to play with any school ensembles, so creating "Snarky Puppy" was his way of getting to play live.Straight out of the gate the group consisted of 10 members. Since those early days they have gone on to release 14 albums, toured the world, and collaborated with an ever evolving carousel of live musicians as well as with solo artists and orchestras. As usual, there is much more to know, so tune in to Jay and Jesse as they discuss this unique collective on Roots to Grooves. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Check out https://www.chrismcqueen.com/Thanks for listening! More about Chris.Chris McQueen has been playing, writing, and recording music since 1994. Along with Henry Hey he co-leads the explorative, groove-oriented instrumental band Forq, which has released four albums, and he has an acoustic guitar duo project with Matt Read that released its debut Western Theatre and is preparing a second album. He is an original and current member of 3-time Grammy winning band Snarky Puppy and Grammy-nominated world music group Bokanté as well as a frequent member of Banda Magda. He has performed with Lucy Woodward, Lizz Wright, Nikka Costa, Myron Butler & Levi, and Alejandro Escovedo. He has been featured in several rock musicals, including David Bowie’s Lazarus at New York Theater Workshop (featuring Michael C. Hall) and The Rocky Horror Show at The Dallas Theater Center. Chris grew up in Austin, TX and started playing guitar and recording songs on a 4-track Tascam around age 10. At 13 he joined RedHeaded Stepchild, a western swing kid band, and started gigging around Austin and learning how to solo from bandmate and guitar prodigy Will Knaak. This interest in improvisation led to a fascination with jazz; he joined and composed for the Westlake High School jazz band, and attended the University of North Texas to study with Fred Hamilton. In 2005-2006 he played in the One O’Clock Lab Band and wrote the piece “Foe Destroyer”, which was recorded for the band's Lab 2006 album.Chris remained in the Dallas area for four years after college, co-leading the rock band Oso Closo with singer/songwriter Adrian Hulet, and studying music with Bernard Wright and other members of the Dallas R&B/jazz/Gospel scene. Oso Closo performed on stage in The Who’s Tommy at the Dallas Theater Center and released two albums. After Oso Closo broke up, Chris and fellow band member Danny Garcia joined with singer/songwriter Cade Sadler to form the rock band Foe Destroyer. Foe Destroyer created an eponymous album, toured for several years, and performed on stage in Dallas and NYC in the musical Fly By Night. In recent years Chris has expanded beyond guitar playing to focus on music arranging, mobile app building, and video editing. He writes frequently for string quartet, big band, and horn/string sections. He co-arranged a piece on the Grammy-winning album Sylva by Snarky Puppy with the Metropole Orchestra. He has transcribed and engraved sheet music for Snarky Puppy, Bill Laurance, and his own groups, and he created arrangements and MainStage sounds for the musical Bunkerville. He has created two iPhone apps: Guitar Note Atlas, which helps guitar players visualize the guitar neck, and Set App for creating and sharing set lists. And he has edited and directed music videos for Forq and the Read/McQueen guitar duo.Chris lives in Austin, TX with his wife Erin and their bunny Georgia.

Jason “JT” Thomas, is a drummer/producer/singer/writer in high demand for both live and studio work for an array of artists... The post 235 – Jason “JT” Thomas: Playing with Snarky Puppy and FORQ, “Phrase-Based” Soloing, Memories of Roy Hargrove appeared first on Working Drummer Podcast.
I caught up with Kevin while he was down under with FORQ and recorded this interview by his hotel pool. After 15 years on the Atlanta music scene, bassist Kevin Scott is expanding his musical and geographic reach. In the last year, he has toured and recorded with Jimmy Herring and John McLaughlin’s “Meeting of the Spirits,” Wayne Krantz, FORQ, and Matador Soul Sounds. Kevin’s creative spirit and instinctual, groove-driven playing have made him a must-have on many exciting and unique projects. Although his itinerary has him travelling more than ever with no signs of slowing, he remains a musical pillar in Atlanta, where he has been a member of multiple bands including Ruby Velle & The Soulphonics and King Baby, and hosts the long-standing Tuesday jam session at Elliot St. Pub; an improvised, no-holds-barred weekly summit of musicians from all genres and backgrounds. There is much to look forward to in 2018 and beyond…European tours with FORQ, Wayne Krantz, Matador!, and Donny McCaslin, U.S. and international dates with Jimmy Herring, and the release of a Jimmy Herring/John McLaughlin live album recorded last fall in San Francisco.

Michael League, bass player for Snarky Puppy, Bokante and Forq, is a modern master of the instrument and one of the hardest working band leaders around. Comfortable in a number of genres on electric, upright and key bass, Mike is not only a world class musician, but a prolific composer, record label executive and all round expert in the modern music industry. It was truly and honour to get to sit down with Michael while he was in Melbourne for two shows with Snarky Puppy and it was great to hear him talk about running a band like Snarky Puppy, the current state of the industry, his vintage P bass, thoughts on gospel music and much more! http://groundupmusic.net/ http://www.basslessonsmelbourne.com http://www.facebook.com/bassguitarlessonsmelbourne http://www.pickpocketfunk.com
