Joined once again by our younger siblings, Erin and Akinde, we dive right into Sarah J Maas's A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury spoilers in part two of our discussion. To kick things off, we start with our complicated feelings on main character Feyre. We also ask the hard hitting questions, like: are these sex scenes sexy? Why is there so much growling? And what would actually happen if the wings of the Illyrians were really that sensitive? As a heads up for people who adore these books: we're not here to kill your vibe! Still, while we do appreciate a lot of what Maas is doing, as well as her wider influence on pop culture, we do have some bones to pick. Also, we drop a few spoilers for some of the later books, so if you care about spoilers for books 3, 4 or 5, please be forewarned! Sorry for the delay on this one, folks! January was a month...but we left a treat for you at the end of this episode to make up for it. This year, like last year, I listened to more jazz than I have in a long time. It should come as no surprise that a lot of my listening tends towards atmospheric jazz. My favorite jazz record of the year, Nala Sinephro - Endlessness, definitely falls into that ambient jazz category. Or as a Pitchfork reviewer called in - Jazz, Not Jazz. Here are my favorite jazz albums of 2024: Bill Laurance & Michael League - Keeping Company Charles Lloyd - The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn - Quiet in a World Full of Noise Eli Keszler - LIVE 2 Emile Londonien - Inwards Flock - Flock II Fuubutsushi - Meridians Jasmine Myra - Rising Kika Sprangers - (In)finity Kinkajous - Nothing Will Disappear Nala Sinephro - Endlessness Prefuse 73 - New Strategies For Modern Crime Volume 1 Shay Hazan - Wusul SHOLTO - Letting Go of Forever Slowly Rolling Camera - Silver Shadow The Bad Plus - Complex Emotions The Sorcerers - I Too Am a Stranger Total Blue - Total Blue Not every album made into the mix plus I added a couple of tracks not on my album list. Send us a Text Message.I sat with pianist and composer Bill Laurance in his studio in South London to discuss his new album with The Untold Orchestra - Bloom. Out now on ACT Music, this is a fascinating work of this classically-trained and virtuoso member of Snarky Puppy.Bill's work combines quasi-classical composition, using the orchestra as a rhythm section in places, and his wonderful improvisation, and our conversation takes us all around Bloom, lockdown and life as a Snarky Puppy.Thank you to Bill for allowing me to share tasters of tracks from Bloom alongside our conversation.Thank you for listening to Harmonious World. Bill Laurance и Michael League из Snarky Puppy записали альбом Where You Wish You Were - Где вы хотели бы быть. Bill Laurance - acoustic piano & voice Michael League - oud, fretless acoustic guitar bass, fret-less baritone electric guitar, ngoni & voice Recorded & mixed at Estudi Vint in Els Prats de Rei, Catalonia, Spain Engineered & mixed by Nic Hard Mastered by Dave McNair in North Carolina, U.S.A. Mongabay Explores is an episodic podcast series that highlights unique places and species from around the globe. Subscribe to the show wherever you get podcasts and stay tuned for subsequent episodes in this season. Spanning over 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) and being built over the course of decades, the Trans-Papua Highway cuts across the entire length of Indonesian New Guinea's two provinces, including 7 key protected areas. While the project is nearly complete, experts warn it will cost billions annually to maintain, and threaten to open up untouched rainforest to palm oil expansion contributing an additional 4.5 million hectares of deforestation by 2036. For this episode, we interviewed David Gaveau, founder of The TreeMap and Bill Laurance, distinguished professor, and director of the Center for Tropical, Environmental, and Sustainability Science at James Cook University in Australia. Both experts explained the environmental, financial, and social costs of the project, which runs through Indonesia's Lorentz National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The wildlife rich island of Sumatra is experiencing a road building boom, causing some of its iconic creatures to be seen by construction workers: a photo of a Sumatran tiger crossing a highway work-site went viral this summer, for example. This smallest of all tiger subspecies still needs its space despite its stature: up to 250 square kilometers for each one's territory. A single road cut into their forest habitat encroaches on these key areas, where less than 400 of these critically endangered animals persist. Road building creates access to impenetrable forests that are home to all kinds of creatures, though, enabling illegal hunting and fragmenting habitats. To discuss the impact of - and alternatives to - such infrastructure projects as the billion dollar Trans-Sumatran Highway, we reached Hariyo “Beebach” Wibisono, a research fellow at the San Diego Zoo Global & director of SINTAS Indonesia, plus Bill Laurance, a distinguished professor at James Cook University, who is also head of ALERT, the Alliance of Leading Environmental Researchers and Thinkers. "Snarky Puppy" are an American instrumental ensemble led by bassist Michael League. The group's formation can be traced back to 2004, after Micheal League's second year at the University of North Texas. He says that he was so bad as a musician he wasn't able to play with any school ensembles, so creating "Snarky Puppy" was his way of getting to play live.Straight out of the gate the group consisted of 10 members. Since those early days they have gone on to release 14 albums, toured the world, and collaborated with an ever evolving carousel of live musicians as well as with solo artists and orchestras. As usual, there is much more to know, so tune in to Jay and Jesse as they discuss this unique collective on Roots to Grooves. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Rob and Seth talk with four-time Grammy award-winning Michael League of Bokanté and Snarky Puppy about his GroundUP Music debut solo release, "So Many Me" in immediate advance of the release of its lead single, "Right Where I Fall." While the sound of this record differs greatly from Michael's other work, he explains how it also has a "bringing it all back home" feel for him personally. We learn how being in quarantine in Spain and viewing his native US from afar during 2020 greatly impacted the music and lyrics of this record, how he ended up touring (and then recording) in duo format with Bill Laurance, why he has developed an affinity for trios and duos, how Atlanta's #1 Snarky Super Fan Jake Funkmayor ended up contributing to SP's "17" release and a good bit more.
El guitarrista Torcuato Mariano ('Ouro de Minas'), la cantante y actriz Tosca ('Giuramento', 'Normalmente' -con Ivan Lins-, 'Per ogni oggi che verrà'), Shabaka & The Ancestors ('Go my heart, go to heaven', 'Run, the darkness will pass'), la cantante y compositora Basia ('Matteo', 'No heartache', 'Be pop', 'Pandora´s box') y el pianista Bill Laurance con WDR Big Band ('Ready wednesday'). Oso Closo performed on stage in The Who’s Tommy at the Dallas Theater Center and released two albums. After Oso Closo broke up, Chris and fellow band member Danny Garcia joined with singer/songwriter Cade Sadler to form the rock band Foe Destroyer. He writes frequently for string quartet, big band, and horn/string sections. He co-arranged a piece on the Grammy-winning album Sylva by Snarky Puppy with the Metropole Orchestra. He has transcribed and engraved sheet music for Snarky Puppy, Bill Laurance, and his own groups, and he created arrangements and MainStage sounds for the musical Bunkerville. Australia is still reeling from a brutal, deadly summer in which intense heat waves killed bats by the thousands. But they’re not the only animals living on the brink of disaster, and a warming world could push some species over the edge. Join Kait and Dr. Bill Laurance, a biologist and expert on Australian wildlife, to find out why two degrees can mean the difference between life and death for some species.

In episode 45 of the Sustainability Agenda, Professor Bill Laurance reveals the enormous, and neglected, environmental impact of road building in the global south and highlights the massive environmental risks associated with China's dizzyingly ambitious Belt and Road initiative—a vast series of infrastructure projects across 70 countries with an estimated budget of $8 trillion. Laurance explains the traditional cycle of road development and its detrimental environmental impact–which has to date mostly been neglected: deforestation from road development can amount to 12 times the impact of any specific infrastructure related project. He also discusses the approach of overseas Chinese companies: after many decades working on the ground as a researcher in the tropics, he has seen first-hand some of the adverse environmental impact of large-scale infrastructure investment in countries with less developed regulatory systems, and the impact of huge bribes to local politicians. Finally, he looks to the future: as this issue is getting increasing attention via The Convention on Biological Diversity and leading environmental organisations, more needs to be done to get the message out. Bill Laurance is a Distinguished Research Professor at James Cook University in Cairns, Australia, and also holds the Prince Bernhard Chair in International Nature Conservation at Utrecht University, Netherlands. Here it is! Another annual installment of the SXSW Edition of the Active Listener Podcast. This was my seventh year in a row of attempting to listen to every artist playing at SXSW and the fifth year I actually got to go. It is always such an amazing event and such a terrific time. I'm really excited to share with you just a snapshot of the amazing artists I saw as well as just share some of the energy. I thank you for your patience. I know it was a bit of a wait but I really had to let it all sink in before I could even begin to process what I wanted to select for the show. I think you're really going to like it. Below I have included the schedule of bands I actually saw. If you think that's a lot you should see the list I start with when I go out at night! I have also included some links to videos and a free album download from my top pick of the festival, Allan Rayman. And of course, the tracklist is also a list of links for where to buy these tunes. Thanks for listening and don't forget to support the artists. Weather report; Spring is nestling happily between cool and warm, the way it should be, maybe a bit too dry for the farmers, April showers few and far between, happy days for cycling DJs. Unsurprisingly I start with a tune that references London in the first line, thank you Eska! Your Joni-esque warble at the opening of "To Be Remembered" eventually gives way to something far more full throated and (conventionally) soulful. However it's not just vocal stylings you've learnt from Ms. Mitchell there's something of the same conversational narrative lyric style in this song with it's prosaic mentions of text messages and planting trees. However that's more of a compliment than a gripe and the long awaited album doesn't disappoint, and there's so much that's just Eska. A good way to begin an opening sequence of tunes that have something of a questioning or searching quality in common. Joyce Elaine Yuille's "Chaos" and Liz Elensky's "Distractions" are both "jazz" songs that deal with the more uncomfortable side of life, whereas Bill Laurance's "Red Sand" is testimony to this musician's, to quote Lee Morgan, "search for the new land". A little Jazz-dance classicism never goes amiss as we anticipate another Sunday Afternoon At Dingwalls session, now barely a month away. From the lesser known Don Scalletta Trio to the very familiar sound and shape of Miles' "Milestones"... still so fresh, bold and essentially modern. Dingwalls vibes run thick through the massive "discovery" of those days , Dansers Inferno, "Sombre Guitar". As far as I recall this was a discovery of original Soul Jazz duo, Alex and Stuart when they traded records from a shop in the nearby yard, but doubtless the tune may have a deeper history for someone; this would have been around 1990. Anthemic, bold and as happy as the title might say otherwise. "Billy Ballet" is the heavyweight in the pack, killer rhythms from Babatunde! Brazilian music takes over the back to back sequence in the second hour. My love of Jobim's music deepens with every listen, having read his sister's excellent biography of it's hard not to be endeared to this passionate genius. A word not to be bandied about lightly, but I wouldn't hesitate to also describe Egberto Gismonti thus as well, though his music is not as easily accessible as Jobim's more mellifluous approach, both these Carioca composers could be described as fine distillers of Brazilian traditions as they draw influence from far and wide in Brazil's rich and diverse musical culture. Azymuth need no introduction but Pela Cidade is an early work that only appeared on a soundtrack.... I love it! Moody, funky and swinging, a great ode to the urban! The three vocal tracks that follow are all connected and highlight three of Brazil's greatest female singers, finishing with the queen of them all , the late great Elis Regina. Her interpretation of Lo Borges' "O Trem Azul" takes the tune to giddying new heights, Elis truly delivers a stunning vocal which combined with an arrangement from her then husband, Cesar Mariano, stands in complete contrast to Lo and Milton Nascimento's mellower original. Beforehand the minimal funkiness of Gal Costa's "O Vento" is followed by the plangent tones of Nana Caymmi rendering "Club Da Esquina No2" an emotional delight. Soul tunes..... Michael Henderson, romantic singer and bass player for Miles Davis, and a tune that was featured by the great Ed Motta on a rather wonderful little feature of him talking music in his vinyl room. (I'll be chatting with Ed Motta on ntslive.com this coming Monday from 2pm, after my own show at midday!) https://youtu.be/cpNK5H7QmFQ Whilst on the subject of vinyl rooms, my friend James Vyner made a little film of me talking tunes at Forge Towers.... https://vimeo.com/123658175 Rounding off, a great Leon Ware song, and I love Coke Escovedo's version. Then a tune that had me reaching for the Discogs tab when I was reminded of it... looking back I often think to myself that a wiser man wouldn't have been so ready to shed various bits of vinyl when under the influence of a particular zeitgeist. Good music has a way of getting back at me! Maybe Jeff Tyzik's "Sweet Nothings" just conjured a memory or maybe I was just finally appreciating the groove and grace of Steve Gadd's drums! Had to slot in a favourite from Manhattan Rhythm and a slice of The Rebirth before finishing with at least a taste of Azymuth's of Alex Malheiros. Enjoy... and as Roland Kirk once put it, "bright moments". 1.Eska - To Be Remembered 2. Alex Puddu - Cruising By Night 3. Joyce Elaine Yuille - Chaos 4. Ajoyo - Tashikere 5. This show ended up being broadcast twice as I had to reluctantly abandon last Sunday's show as something crucial and even closer to my heart needed my attention, so it went out again. I'd recorded this one at Forge Towers before I took a few days out on family business, so I thought It might sound pretty stale by the time I got round to listening back. But as I've edited now I've really enjoyed the experience. Nothing exceptional here, just regular Cosmic Jam business, spiced with a couple of all time favourites along the way. A first half hour dominated by the new grooves of Bill Laurance and Hiatus Coyote. Then we revive some Ed Motta, stirring great memories of when he spent some time in London hanging out. There's a Tania Maria tune which is chock full of all her trademark samba fuelled funkiness, some Latin funk from Roland Vasquez and souuuul from Leroy Hutson, and (Xian) flavour from James Vincent, (awesome outro!) and that tune about L.A. that somehow just occupies it's own territory. Second hour new jazzambience from Jessica Lauren and Richard Spaven, before that soulful feeling comes again, shaken and stirred through tunes by Linda Tillery, Gloria Jay, AWB and Gil... ( a happy one that always makes me smile!) Dancing all the way home with boogie and disco to uplift even the most tired and troubled soul. And yes.... "Starlette" is really right up there for me in the echelon of "works of utter genius"!! I'm back with a whole new scheme of things, or at least some different tunes, next week. In the meantime.... hope you enjoy this selection. Peace. P. 1. Cy Gorman ft Will Poskitt - Cool Change 2. Hiatus Coyote - By Fire 3. Bill Laurance - The Rush 4. Marcina Arnold - Forefathers 5.
