Send us a textWhat happens when you combine military experience, personal recovery, cutting-edge trauma therapies, and the healing power of nature? Beau Laviolette's remarkable journey answers this question through a story of transformation and purpose. From the sugar cane fields of Louisiana to the Marine Corps and back again, Beau's path wasn't straightforward. After military service ended unexpectedly due to seizures, he faced addiction struggles that eventually led him to recovery and a calling to help others. This deeply personal experience became the foundation for his approach to trauma healing, combining Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy using the Syzyge method.Beau takes us through his discovery of these powerful modalities and how they complement each other, particularly when working with complex trauma. While EMDR helps process traumatic memories, IFS provides the framework to understand the protective parts of ourselves that develop in response to trauma. This combination creates a comprehensive approach that addresses both neurobiological and psychological aspects of trauma recovery. The conversation ventures into fascinating territory as Beau describes his veteran-focused nature retreats. These immersive experiences take healing beyond the constraints of office therapy, allowing veterans to "unplug, connect, and let go" in natural settings. He explains how nature inherently contains qualities that facilitate access to what IFS calls "self-energy" – our core self characterized by compassion, curiosity, and calm.Developing Meaning is NOT AFFILIATED WITH ANY INSTITUTIONS and is NOT INTENDED AS MEDICAL ADVICE.Theme Music by The Thrashing Skumz.Produced by Dirk Winter MD PhD and brought to you by Consilient Mind LLC.

Send us a textHow dietary fats and cannabinoids shape brain function and mental well-being.Episode Summary: Dr. Steven Laviolette discusses the role of lipids, particularly endocannabinoids and fatty acids, in brain signaling and mental health, discussing how dietary omega-3 and omega-6 imbalances, prenatal THC exposure, and fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) impact mood, anxiety, and neuroinflammation, while highlighting potential dietary interventions to mitigate these effects.About the guest: Steven Laviolette, PhD is a professor at the University of Western Ontario, holding a PhD, and his lab focuses on the brain's cannabinoid system and its role in mental health. He investigates how cannabinoids and fatty acids influence brain development and disorders like anxiety and schizophrenia.Discussion Points:The brain uses fats like endocannabinoids (e.g., anandamide, 2-AG) not just for structure but as signaling molecules to regulate emotional and cognitive processing.Prenatal THC exposure in rodents skews the omega-3/omega-6 balance toward pro-inflammatory omega-6, leading to cognitive and mood issues in offspring, but omega-3 supplementation can mitigate these effects.Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs), especially FABP5, shuttle endocannabinoids like anandamide to degradation sites, and inhibiting FABP5 increases anandamide levels, reducing anxiety and depression without addictive side effects.FABP5 inhibitors show promise as safer alternatives to benzodiazepines. Both THC and CBD can induce problems during early development, challenging the notion that CBD is universally safe, especially during pregnancy.Dietary interventions, like omega-3 supplementation or antioxidants (e.g., L-theanine, N-acetylcysteine), may counteract the negative psychiatric effects of cannabinoid exposure, particularly during adolescence. The North American diet, high in omega-6, contributes to neuroinflammation and mental health issues, underscoring the need for nutritional neuroscience to address these imbalances.Related episode:M&M 165: PUFAs in Brain Health & Disease, Dietary Fats, Brain Lipids, Nutrition | Richard Bazinet*Not medical advice.Support the showAll episodes, show notes, transcripts, and more at the M&M Substack Affiliates: KetoCitra—Ketone body BHB + potassium, calcium & magnesium, formulated with kidney health in mind. Pitching your product shouldn't feel painful — but for many entrepreneurs, it does. In this episode of The Business of Thinking Big, I sit down with Stacey LaViolette, the creator of My Friend Toothy, to unpack how we transformed her pitch and helped her triple her conversion rate at live events — without changing her product at all. When Stacey joined Mama Mentors, she was already doing well, but knew she could be doing better. Her sales pitch wasn't connecting the way she hoped — so we got to work. Together, we refined her messaging, repositioned her product, and trained her team to pitch with confidence and clarity. By shifting just a few words and focusing on what really mattered to her audience, Stacey went from selling to 2 out of 10 people… to 6 out of 10.This episode is a must-listen for product-based entrepreneurs who want to improve their sales without feeling “salesy.” You'll learn how to pitch with purpose, speak directly to your customer's needs, and turn casual conversations into confident conversions. Tennessee and Texas A&M face off in the College World Series final, and Chris Lee, Graham Doty and Alfred Ezman break it all down with their preview and predictions. Topics include: - The Vols and the Aggies look like the country's two best teams. - Tennessee's lineup did historic things, and had five members (Christian Moore, Kavares Tears, Billy Amick, Blake Burke and Dylan Dreiling) in the 20-home-run club. - But the Vols have hitting depth off the bench, too, with Dalton Bargo and a cast of others giving coach Tony Vitello some mix-and-match options. - Tennessee's starting pitching comes in on a tear, with Drew Beam's stuff ticking up a notch in Omaha and Zander Sechrist having shown rock-solid consistency of late. - The Vols' bullpen of AJ Causey, Nate Snead, Kirby Connell, Dylan Loy, Marcus Phillips, Andrew Behnke and JJ Garcia has also been elite. - The Aggies have battled season-ending injuries to All-American Braden Montgomery and bullpen ace-turned-starter Shane Sdao, and in spite of that, have gone unbeaten in the NCAA tournament. - However, an injury to outfielder Jace LaViolette has the Aggies further hobbled, even though LaViolette played through a hamstring injury on Wednesday. - Texas A&M starting pitchers Justin Lamkin and Ryan Prager have been at the top of their games in Omaha. - The Aggie bullpen, led by Evan Ashenbeck, Chris Cortez, Josh Stewart, Brock Peery and Brad Rudis is one of the country's best. The Washington Capitals are looking to jump start their sputtering offense heading into Game 3 of their first round playoff series against the New York Rangers , and it appears coach Peter Laviolette is ready to shake up his forward lines in an effort to generate more scoring. If Thursday's practice was any indication, it seems rookie winger Ivan Miroshnichenko will slot into the lineup on the fourth line, replacing veteran grinder Nicolas Aube-Kubel on right wing. Aube-Kubel was relegated to working with the scratches after practice, a clear sign his spot is in jeopardy.Laviolette has kept his lineup intact through the first two games, both losses, but with the team now facing a pivotal Game 3 at home, the urgency to simply secure a win has reached a fever pitch. Miroshnichenko brings an intriguing mix of speed, tenacity and physicality that could provide a much-needed spark. "His speed was on display and he was tenacious all over the ice on the puck," Laviolette noted after practice. The 19-year-old rookie has seen spot duty with the Caps this season when called up from the AHL, and while throwing a young, inexperienced player into the fire in the playoffs is always a gamble, the Caps have very few options left to try and revive their scuffling offense.Captain Alex Ovechkin has yet to make an impact through two games, mustering just one shot on goal as the Panthers have made stopping him a focus. Ovechkin acknowledged something seems "a little bit off" but tried to project a calm confidence things would turn around on home ice. "We just have to calm down. Yeah, we're a young team, but we still have an experienced team, you know," he said. "We have to calm down, play simple with the puck, don't think about it too much, and it will come." Ovechkin's longtime linemate T.J. Oshie has also struggled, as the duo have combined for just two shots at even strength. With the Caps' playoff lives on the line and the series shifting back to Washington, the team will look to their captain to lead the way offensively. But Ovechkin will need help, and Miroshnichenko will have a chance to provide it and potentially give the Caps the critical victory they need to get back in the series.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Monopoly GO!Get in the game and join your friends.
