Send us a textLongtime-listening playwright Brad McEntire streamed into the Spotlight to discuss his experience and approach to the craft. We discuss the exercises and lessons from studying under Will Power at Southern Methodist University and the Dallas Theatre Center, playing with the rhythm of dialogue, what beginning playwrights don't do or practice, and whether or not you can achieve impossible stage directions with a small budget. We also delve into his background as a literary manager, his process of one-person shows and the difference between solo performances and personal stories, the one-person structure as well as playing with different structures, tackling solo long-form improv, staging your own one-person show and finding opportunities for them. We wrap things up with the flaws of rewriting on stage and his podcasts - The Cultivated Playwright and Brad McEntire Plays and - and the difficulty of monetization. I have a not-so-secret love of sound design, and quite frankly I can't believe it's taken me THIRTY-NINE EPISODES to have a sound designer on, but here we are.  David has so much insight to share about composing for theater, film, radio plays, podcasts, you name it. This conversation was a lot of fun for me and gave me an even deeper appreciation of just what sound designers in the theatre space accomplish. For a full transcript of this episode visit beyondthelightspodcast.com.Mentioned in this Episode[00:25:01] Play On Shakespeare and Next Chapter [00:33:32] Dallas Theater Center[00:34:07] Round House Theater[00:34:31] Emilio Delgado [00:35:55] San Francisco Arts Commission [00:44:00] It Was Always Here[00:46:34] Teatro Campesino[00:46:40] La PeñaFollow DavidWebsiteInstagramBandcampFollow Beyond the LightsWebsiteFacebookTwitterInstagram

Ace Anderson is an extremely dynamic leading actor who grounds himself in the truth of every role he portrays. Attending competitive performing arts schools since he was 10 years of age, Ace finally received his BFA in Acting from Southern Methodist University in 2013. His training has helped him develop a subtlety for storytelling that few possess. Ace brings a level of authenticity to his characters that makes you forget you're watching a performance. It is no wonder that he was asked to become a member of the small elite group of Dallas actors known as The Brierley Resident Acting Company of the Tony Award-winning Dallas Theater Center. Since 2013, Ace has tackled over 20 roles giving earth-shattering, award-winning performances that would make audiences fall in love with even the most sinister of characters. He has a wide vocal range, unique tonal quality, and a poetic flow that gives him the voice to command a battalion, preach an infectiously musical sermon, or eloquently cuss someone out in patois. Ace's Jamaican background brings an ambiguity to his ethnicity that complements his versatility allowing him to transform from bright-eyed to threatening just by the way he holds his head. Ace is a joy to work with. His effervescent spirit is contagious on set. He is always smiling and ready to work because it isn't work for him; it's playtime. He is often described as a passionately profound and deep thinker. His love of words and passion for rhythm & rhyme are both illustrated in his ability to find the breath and voice of a character complete with the idiosyncratic cultural subtleties that bring stories to life. From playing a machete slinging drug lord to a pigtailed 5-year old in a pink dress, there isn't a role Ace can't play believably. I work as a professional actor, graphic designer, and photographer. I do quite a bit. That's why they call me Ace of All Trades: The Modern Renaissance Man. I am also a member of the outstanding league of elite Dallas actors known as the Brierley Resident Acting Company at the Tony Award-winning Dallas Theater Center. I am a proud 2013 alum of Southern Methodist University with a BFA in Acting from Meadows School of The Arts. After working at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as the lead Graphic designer for a couple of years, I started my own brand design & development company called The Striped Heart. Since 2016, my wife and I have been creating our dream life with a diligent aim to be exemplars of passion, artistry, health, and well-being. My primary goal is to build a blockbuster film acting career to create an influential platform to revolutionize the way humans tell stories. Lately, I've been writing a TV series about the beginning of time called Sons of Adam. I've also been developing an original spoken word concert tour exploring the role of masculinity and truth in relationships called Creation of an Asshole. I’m obsessed with profound vocabulary and mixing eloquent articulation with rhythm and rhyme. When I'm not writing and performing, I'm designing logos, websites, and branding under my design company, The Striped Heart. Just Google 'Ace Anderson' to find all of my content. I live each day in awe of life’s stubborn persistence, the endless hope of a better future, and mankind’s willingness to take on the unknown forthrightly and with courage. -Ace www.aceofalltrades.xyz

John Mackey joins me for a conversation about his hugely successful career, from Commodore 64 through his remarkable "Places We Can No Longer Go" that was recently premiered at CBDNA 2019! Topics: The story of how John went from writing primarily chamber and orchestral music to becoming one of the most celebrated composers of music for wind ensemble and band. John’s background growing up and learning music and how to compose not in a traditional band, choir, or orchestra but instead on his computer through thousands of hours entering music via a joystick and reverse engineering what he was transcribing. The value of self publishing and the story of John’s growth from printing and shipping everything himself to having two employees to handle his current workload. The impact of writing dance music and how it’s influenced his compositional style and then an extended discussion of impostor syndrome, including John’s feelings about his most recent work Places We Can No Longer Go written about his mother’s battle with dementia and premiered at CBDNA just this past weekend. Recent commissions include works for the BBC Singers, the Dallas Wind Symphony, military, high school, middle school, and university bands across America and Japan, and concertos for Joseph Alessi (principal trombone, New York Philharmonic) and Christopher Martin (principal trumpet, New York Philharmonic). Episode #021 with Lisa Lloyd Being Faithful with the Gifts and Talents God's Given YOU!   Head to KristiClover.com/021 to see all the Show Notes & Awesome Quotes that we collected for you!   The need to feel appreciated and needed is quite common for most of us, but especially for moms. We pour ourselves out to our families all day. We often joke that our job is a thankless job. Today on the podcast, we are talking to Lisa Lloyd about her new book, Chasing Famous. She talks about how it’s in our “human nature to want to be loved, affirmed, and accepted.” In other words, it’s normal. Yet, we often look for all these things in all the wrong places. Ultimately, God is the one who we should be running to for our approval. He loves us and created us to shine for His glory. He equipped each one of us to tell a story with our lives using the gifts that He’s given us — making Him “famous” in all we do. (bold that!) I know you are going to be so encouraged by this episode. We went totally off topic from what we had planned. I think you are going to be so blessed that we did, too! We had even prayed before hand that God would lead the conversation…and He did.   A Few Exciting Little Announcements!   I wanted to that my BRAND NEW book (with Tricia Goyer) Homeschool Basics is finally here! The Producer's Perspective Podcast with Ken Davenport

Tara Rubin is a casting director with her own casting company since 2001. Before that, she was a casting director at Johnson-Liff Associates. During those years she worked on productions of Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Sunset Boulevard, Jerry Zaks' revival of Guys and Dolls and Miss Saigon. At Tara Rubin Casting, she and her colleagues cast the musicals School of Rock, Mamma Mia!, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Aladdin, Mary Poppins, Spamalot, The Producers, Young Frankenstein for Broadway as well as The Country Girl, The Heiress, The Farnsworth Invention and A Time To Kill. They have worked with many regional theaters including La Jolla Playhouse, The Williamstown Theater Festival, Dallas Theater Center, Arena Stage, and The Westport Country Playhouse. She serves on the board of the Casting Society of America. It takes quite a diplomat, and there aren’t many better than our guest this week, Tara Rubin of Tara Rubin Casting. Just in the past few months Tara has been casting Cats, Miss Saigon, Dear Evan Hansen, and all those kids in School of Rock. Talk about a diverse bunch of actors . . . and creative teams! That’s why I cast Tara in this week’s podcast. So listen in and hear Tara talk about . . . The most important thing she learned when she worked for a Producer. How casting has changed in the past 20 years, and how that helps newcomers. Whether agents have more or less power now than they did before. The biggest mistake Actors make when walking into the room (and the mistake they make when marketing themselves). How are we doing on diversity . . . and what else we should be doing. Month Upon a Time, Episode #1 (June): It's opening night of my new podcast series/song-cycle, Month Upon a Time! And I'm thrilled to have the super-talented Kate Wetherhead on the bill to sing the first song, "Drink My Way!"Kate first caught my eye in TheatreworksUSA's wonderful production of Sarah Plain and Tall, and she has continued to impress with performances in Broadway's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Legally Blonde, the Off-Broadway production of Adam Gwon's great musical, Ordinary Days, and most recently as Sally Bowles in the Dallas Theater Center production of Cabaret.Meanwhile, as if that weren't enough, she and fellow super-talent Andrew Keenan-Bolger created, wrote, directed, and produced an original web series,Submissions Only, which is a knock-out! Six beautifully executed, fun, funny episodes which I highly recommend! Can't wait for Season Two!!And if you want even more Kate, you can check out some of hermany terrific youtube performances....Special thanks to the outrageously talented actor, Steve Rosen, whose idea inspired this month's song. And one last big thank you to my old college buddy, set designer Bradley Kaye, for the adorable artwork for Month Upon a Time.
