The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Trumpeter/composer Keyon Harrold was born and raised in Ferguson, MO to a musical family. He is the son of pastors and one of 16 children. As a boy, a trumpet was placed in his hands, and the rest is history.  He moved to New York to study at The New School in the 1990s and became part of a legendary generation of musicians associated with the neo soul movement, including Common, Bilal, Roy Hargrove, The Roots, and Robert Glasper.  Harrold is a reliable and sought after player among big acts, and he's worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Rihanna, Eminem, Maxwell, Mac Miller and Snoop Dogg.  At the same time he's a seriously gifted jazz improviser and composer, who was mentored by trumpeter Charles Tolliver, and who was once referred to as “the future of the trumpet” by Wynton Marsalis.  He supplied all of the trumpet playing in Don Cheadle's Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, playing to match Cheadle's on-screen performance as Miles. The soundtrack to the film won a Grammy.  But while Keyon has enjoyed what might appear to be a charmed career, he has also had a series of unexpected setbacks and heavy lived experiences that contribute to his musical journey.  His new album Foreverland is a celebration of his multidimensional career and his sensitivity as an artist, proving that Harrold is a master of channeling his lived experience through his horn. The album features 10 original songs that explore themes of empowerment, positivity, love, loss, and vulnerability.  And it's  a family affair — nearly every musician is a longtime friend, including Common, Robert Glasper, Laura Mvula, Chris Dave, Marcus Gilmore, Nir Felder, Randy Runyon, BIGYUKI, Burniss Travis and many others.  Here he talks about Foreverland, how a series of losses in his life ultimately led him to make “something beautiful, something positive, something inspiring,” and his reflections on the early days of his career as part of a community of like minded musicians who were “always open.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast

Ife Alaba (Born Ifeoluwa Alaba on June 10, 1999) is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. She grew up in South Africa with a strong musical background spanning from being in choirs, orchestras, undergoing opera training, and undertaking the trombone. Ife began her music career after moving to Canada, as a performer at the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2017. She later released her debut single “All By Myself” in January 2020 to much local acclaim due to its numbing ear runs and bleeding emotion. Since then, she has released other singles and featured in other songs. Each song showcases her unique vocal abilities and uses life experiences as a muse for her heart-wrenching hooks. Ife has performed on several stages such as the Black Lives Matter NL protest in 2020, Lawnya Vawnya Festival 2021 and Music NL showcase 2021. Ife Alaba uses creative but subtle melodies while keeping her music relatable and catchy. She is a powerful vocalist whose music style has been influenced by a mixture of pop, afro, and classical music. She has named other artists such as Laura Mvula, Tiwa Savage, Adele, Beyoncé, Nneka, and Andrea Brocelli as artists who have influenced her.Ife is a proud member of https://musicnl.ca/#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/

070 Shake, You Can't Kill Me. Naturally, Mike Dean is involved here. 070 Shake calls him the album's final boss, and his synthesizer Love sits in a beautiful hazel atop everything this album delivers, and it oscillates from the opener Web, which sounds almost like a gospel number with naked vocals atop an epic synth lead. Then these huge slow burns like medicine or skin and bones. Basically, what you get if you fed Frank Ocean's pyramids through an industrial vat of acid and cobbled together songs from the resulting sludge. There's discordant changes of pace like Blue Velvet, which kind of sounds like a Laura Mvula song on ketamine. There's some really listenable bops on here. Cocoon, Body, Vibrations. It's a little bit disconcerting because the second half of the album actually employs way more percussion, and she truly begins to skate across some truly diverse production. It kind of feels like sketches that were unfinished but were so stunning they were sold anyway. She actually told Complex the album was about dissociation, but I kind of get a cold feeling from these tracks. You know, the sense of a heavy wall of sound, and rather than sitting atop them or penetrating them with her vocals, she seems kind of lost within them. The joyful moments when she explodes out from them and shine so warmly with such a cold backdrop like vibrations, for example. I've played it pretty much constantly since it dropped, my partner and I were playing it yesterday while we were making cookies and having some pretty heavy conversation, and it soundtracked both beautifully. It slips into the background when you can't attend to it, but it's directly in your face when you flip your ears on. Perfect, then to described dissociation.Check out the replies and reactions on Beams.fm

We had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle Willis' over Zoom video!Singer, songwriter and keyboard player Michelle Willis' sophomore record Just One Voice is out now on GroundUP Music. Featuring performances by David Crosby, Michael McDonald, Taylor Ashton, Grégoire Maret and Becca Stevens, the album is produced with Fab Dupont (Andre 3000, Gregory Porter). In celebration of the new release, Willis is debuting a new video for the single “How Come,” featuring vocals by Michael McDonald.. “How Come” comes on the heels of the album's previous singles, “Trigger,” “Green Grey” and “Liberty,” the latter featuring vocals from both David Crosby and McDonald. Just One Voice was written during the intensity of non-stop travel, penned from the cramped seats of buses, planes and countless green rooms. One night, out on the open road, Willis played the title track for Crosby, her mentor and bandmate, who urged, “No one else sounds like this. This is you. You have to make this record.” Shortly thereafter she was able to secure a prestigious grant from the Canada Council for the Arts which set the recording process in motion. Michelle Willis is a Canadian singer-songwriter and keyboard player based in Brooklyn. A Toronto native, she moved to New York in 2016 with few prospects, save for a monthly residency at Rockwood Music Hall. Within months she was touring in two bands led by David Crosby (David Crosby & Sky Trails and David Crosby & Lighthouse) and another by pop/jazz composer Becca Stevens and opening for jazz/funk collective Snarky Puppy across the globe. Willis has cemented her place as an in-demand keyboard player and singer, touring and recording with a diverse array of artists such as the aforementioned Crosby and Stevens as well as the Zac Brown Band, Iggy Pop, Laura Mvula and Michael McDonald. Just Once Voice follows her debut record, 2016's See Us Through. We want to hear from you! Anil Sebastian is a multifaceted artist, producer and vocalist producing some of the most unique and otherworldly music to emerge from the UK in recent years.  As well as their solo identity, Anil Sebastian is also in Icelandic band Hrím, with singer Ösp and producer Cherif Hashizume. Sebastian is also the creative director of pioneering sonic branding agency DLMDD.   Already a familiar face to many in the industry as co-founder and director of the legendary London Contemporary Voices Choir, Anil's work has seen them regularly working on arrangements for and appearing alongside the likes of Alt-J, Manu Delago, Imogen Heap, Elena Tonra (Daughter), Kelly Lee Owens, Eivor, Eska, Nitin Sawhney, Laura Mvula, Sam Smith and U2. The choir has performed at several Burberry fashion shows, The British Fashion Awards, the 2020 Tommy Hilfiger show, two BBC Proms and also features on the Harry Potter Play soundtrack. Anil's choral version of Amber Run's ‘I Found' (which LCV performed with the band for Mahogany) has had over 4 million streams. Having released their debut album “Mesonoxian”, co-produced by Ingmar Kamalagharan and Cherif Hashizume (Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno, David Byrne) in late 2017, collecting support on the way from i-D, Stereogum, Clash and Line of Best Fit online as well as radio support across Radio 2, 3, 6Music, BBC London and the Asian Network, the album campaign culminated in a sold out show at London's legendary ICA. “A gorgeous listen from start to finish...brave at every turn” Album Review, Line of Best Fit Since then Anil has immersed themself once again in the creative process, contributing co-writes/features the debut album of legendary producer Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Imogen Heap, Robyn), Björk percussionist Manu Delago's Silver Kobalt album as well as taking on several bespoke commissions for sync, contributing choral arrangements to queer artist and activist Nakhane's debut album, and co-writing tracks for The Cinematic Orchestra side-project Hunrosa. In October 2020 Anil Sebastian's immersive short film Daffodil was released on NOWNESS. Daffodil has been created with support from Momentum Funding by PRS Foundation, Arts Council and National Lottery   Directed by Thiing Studios and written by Anil Sebastian, Daffodil explores the future of artificial intelligence and looks at what it means to be human and how we define identity. Combining animation by Thomas Rawle with slick live action footage and archival footage from Sebastian's childhood, Daffodil is a surreal examination of the moral implications of artificial intelligence through Sebastian's imagination. Set in the near future, Daffodil tells the story of a scientist (played by Anil Sebastian themself) gone rogue and we see them attempting to bring back the conscious mind of a child in the form of an AI. In a parallel, otherworldly meta-verse this playful creature is being created through animation. Paired effortlessly with the film and archival footage, Sebastian's exquisite avant-garde art pop soundtrack provides the perfect backdrop for this mesmerising cinematic experience. The film was shown at Normal? Festival of the Brain as well as at a private screening underground at The Brunel Shaft in London.  For Sebastian's cinematic debut, they have collaborated with an impressive list of some of the most forward thinking musicians, artists and thinkers in the UK. Sebastian holds a degree in Physics and Philosophy and they are one of the most unique voices and producers in the UK scene having worked with some of the most iconic global stars such as Imogen Heap, U2 and Bjork producer Guy Sigsworth. Daffodil also sees a contribution by Anil's brother Ingmar Kamalagharan as the co-producer of the film and live drummer on the soundtrack. Kamalagharan has a degree in Astronomy from UCL and works at the UK Space Agency  and he is a long-time collaborator of the producer and innovator Cherif Hashizume (David Byrne, Jon Hopkins, Brian Eno) in machine learning, interactive music installations and innovative software. Daffodil is a Descartesian meditation on existence and consciousness. As technology continues to infiltrate our public and private life, how can we reach an authentic form of being? Can an artificial intelligence gain consciousness and can it truly exist? Would you bring back someone you lost and if so, would they really be them? By combining science fiction elements with intimate, personal storytelling through encapsulating visuals and soundtrack, Daffodil is a film not to miss.  http://www.anilsebastian.com https://www.instagram.com/anil.sebastian

Many black, UK-based, female R&B performers, especially those from the early 2000s, have found it hard to establish a career at home. Acts such as Estelle, Jamelia, Sade, Ms Dynamite, Cleopatra and Misteeq have either left the music industry completely, diversified into presenting and acting or have re-established a base in the US in an attempt to continue their careers. Meanwhile American performers such as Beyonce, Rihanna and Alicia Keys who started their careers at a similar time, continue to dominate the music world. British acts, despite early chart recognition, awards and fan devotion, struggled to make an impact in the same way. And in the modern era, performers such as Laura Mvula, despite enormous talent and massive critical acclaim, have encountered problems dealing with the music industry. Why do the women involved in British R&B fail to find lasting success at home? Why can't British artists maintain the same trajectory as their American counterparts? Why do they feel it necessary to relocate abroad or work in other parts of the entertainment industry? And will the R&B artists of the future face the same problems?
