Two days following the commemoration of 25 years since the horrors at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, former school principal Frank DeAngelis shares his thoughts and memories in the wake of the tragedy and all that he has experienced in the years after. Also, many Republicans are displeased with Speaker Mike Johnson advancing foreign aid bills without any additional funding for our border with Mexico. Is he in danger of suffering the same fate as his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy?
25 years after the tragedy at Columbine. Many things have changed since then. What have we learned? Former principal of the school, Frank DeAngelis is Peter's guest for this hour.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There are no two ways around this fact: today's conversation is tough. It's really, really tough. Today, April 20, 2024, marks 25 years since the Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colorado. I woke up this morning and read an article in People magazine about Frank DeAngelis, who was the principal at Columbine at the time of the shooting. In the article, DeAngelis said that every single morning, he wakes up and says the names of those killed in that day's horrible events. He said he almost died twice that day, and, in his words, “For whatever reason God spared me that day. So I need to try to help others.” I will take a page from Principal DeAngelis and begin this episode by saying the names of the 12 students and one teacher killed that day: Cassie Bernall, Steven Curnow, Corey DePooter, Kelly Fleming, Matt Kechter, Daniel Mauser, Danny Rohrbough, Dave Sanders, Rachel Scott, Isaiah Shoels, John Tomlin, Lauren Townsend, and Kyle Velasquez. Thirteen people who woke up on this morning 25 years ago and headed into school for what they probably imagined would be a typical Tuesday—and they never came home. Today on the show I have Dave Cullen, who wrote the definitive book on the Columbine massacre, simply titled Columbine, in 2009, 10 years after the attack happened. It took Dave a full decade to write this masterpiece, and he followed it up with a book about the Parkland school shooting, simply titled Parkland, in 2019. Dave's Columbine book has a new edition and we talk about that in today's episode. You can feel Dave's passion for a topic he spent a full decade writing about oozing throughout this conversation. I was 12 years old and in the sixth grade on April 20, 1999, when perpetrators Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot and killed 12 fellow classmates and a teacher at the school. The massacre was also an attempted bombing that failed, and 10 of the 12 students killed were in the school library, the epicenter of the attack, where Harris and Klebold also killed themselves at the massacre's end. When it happened, Columbine was the deadliest mass school shooting at a K-12 school in U.S. history; Harris and Klebold had been planning their attack for at least a year and planned for it to be primarily a bombing attack, and secondarily a shooting attack. When the bombs they'd built failed to detonate, they began shooting. Their motive remains inconclusive, but Dave and I get into the “why” of it all in our conversation today. Its aftermath has unfortunately spawned dozens of copycat killings, called “the Columbine effect,” and the word “Columbine” itself has become a word symbolizing school shootings. The attack took place from 11:19 a.m. to 12:08 p.m., culminating in the suicides of Harris and Klebold. In 2007, the Columbine Memorial opened to the public, and two years later, in 2009, Dave's book came out. Dave is considered the nation's foremost authority on Columbine, and his book covers two major storylines: the killers' evolution leading up to the attack, and the survivors' struggles with its aftermath after it happened. Chapters alternate between those two stories, and the book spent eight weeks on The New York Times bestseller list and won numerous awards, drawing comparisons to Truman Capote's classic In Cold Blood and Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me. This conversation is a difficult one, but necessary. Columbine by Dave Cullen The audiobook is also available “Confronting: Columbine” podcast

We often talk about rebounding on the WASP. It may not be much harder than this since we spoke earlier in 2022 about Holocaust survivor Lili Berliner. Today we talk with Rick Townsend, whose lovely daughter Lauren was one of 12 students murdered at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Rick is the president of the Columbine Memorial Foundation, which maintains the beautiful memorial in Clement Park adjacent to the school. It's a place that allows quiet reflection and healing, and does a fantastic job of remembering the innocent lives lost. I met Rick, along with former Columbine principal Frank DeAngelis, in September at the Dave Sanders Invitational cross country meet, named after the heroic teacher and coach who died protecting his students. Both Rick and Frank impressed me with their passion and devotion to the memorial and to remembering the victims and supporting the entire Columbine community. I've always been awed that Mr. DeAngelis stayed on as principal until kids who were in kindergarten at the time had eventually graduated from Columbine, spending almost 35 years at the school. To this day, he remains the person who the media seek out following yet another school tragedy, and one of the first to reach out to those stricken communities. I hope you will appreciate this poignant and inspirational conversation, and consider helping the Columbine Memorial Foundation, which as Rick explains, has many expenses related to upkeep, weather the elements, updated the lighting system, and more. Columbinememorial.org has the story, pictures, and an opportunity to donate.Rick and I mention here the inspiring documentary 13 Families: Life After Columbine, which is a very moving tribute to the 13 beautiful souls lost that day. I will send the DVD copy that Rick gave to me to the first person who contacts me at one of the addresses below. Frank DeAngelis is on the air with us in the 10-o-clock. Peter gets on the subject of mass shootings, ghost guns, and gun laws. Frank has done a lot of research in this area as he was a survivor of the Columbine shooting, now retired principal, which leaves us trying to answer; How do we stop the rise in mass shootings? It's starting to be clearer that it isn't the guns, but something must be done. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

COLUMBINE- A CONVERSATION WITH FRANK DEANGELIS Former Principal of Columbine High School We are joined by special guest and good friend of Katherine's, Frank DeAngelis, former Principal of Columbine High School Frank shares his best learnings since that fateful day on the 20th of April 1999 when two students, after a failed bombing attempt, opened fire inside the school, killing 12 students and one teacher, injuring many, many more. “one of the lessons that I learned is that we can all experience the same event, but how we deal with it, we deal with it differently." OXFORD HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING PART TWO Near Detroit, Michigan On November the 30th 2021, a 15 year old student came out of the bathroom and opened fire. Tragically four students lost their lives and seven more were left with injuries. In PART TWO we are again joined again by Frank DeAngelis and Meggan Preston as we look at the significance of the legal charges that make this case so unique. As regular listeners know, we usually take a look in depth at the killer's background, looking at pinch points along where somebody could have seen something and said something. Understanding what the behaviors of concern are is key to preventing these shootings in the first place. However, as this particular case is so recent and still being tried in court the details of his background are light but we will circle back to it in a later episode. This is a watershed case, with not only domestic terrorism charges being laid against the shooter but involuntary manslaughter charges against the parents. Will it change the way parents allow their children to have access to weapons? There is so much to unpack in this case that we have split it over two parts. We are joined by special guests, Frank DeAngelis, former Principal of Columbine High School and Katherine's niece Meggan Preston who lives 30 minutes away from Oxford School. There are new questions emerging about the police response to the deadly mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas and the timeline of the attack. Meantime, some Republicans are suggesting “hardening” schools after the massacre. And after learning investigators needed DNA from parents to help identify the shooting victims, we look at how lethal an AR-15 style rifle can be to the human body. State Sen.
