Send us a textA powerful exposé of how television preaching transformed from spiritual ministry to profitable business model, forever changing American Christianity. The story begins with Fred Davis, the forgotten pioneer who created the template for religious broadcasting while retaining control of all advertising revenue—a model that would launch countless televangelists into wealth and influence. The conversation reveals how mega-churches became deeply entangled with political interests during the 1970s and 80s. In exchange for tax-exempt status and financial support, these growing congregations provided their membership lists to politicians, creating a mutually beneficial arrangement that explains why the same politicians who advocate separation of church and state regularly appear in pulpits during election seasons. This historical foundation helps listeners understand the development of Christian nationalism and the political connections maintained by influential figures like Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Falwell, and others. Their ministries weren't merely spiritual enterprises but functioning businesses leveraging tax advantages while serving political interests. The discussion challenges popular end-times teachings by examining what Scripture actually says about the Antichrist (mentioned only five times in the Bible), Daniel's 70 weeks prophecy, and Jesus' clear statement that "this generation will not pass away until all these things take place." Through careful biblical analysis, the podcast dismantles common misunderstandings about the rapture, showing how it follows ancient Middle Eastern customs where citizens would meet arriving royalty outside the city to escort them back—not to disappear people from earth.Perhaps most provocative is the examination of teachings about a future rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. If Jews were to reinstitute animal sacrifices after Christ's perfect sacrifice, wouldn't this itself be an abomination? How could an "abomination of desolation" occur in a temple that would already dishonor God's completed work?Listen now to discover how understanding these historical and theological truths can free you from deception and deepen your appreciation for what Christ has already accomplished.Support the show

The Goldman Case (Le Procès Goldman) (2023), is a French courtroom drama based on the real-life 1976 trial of Pierre Goldman, a far-left Jewish militant who was accused of multiple armed robberies and four murders during a holdup of a pharmacy in Paris. The film, which was directed by Cedric Kahn from screenplay by Kahn and Nathalie Hertzberg, stars Arieh Worthalter as Goldman and Arthur Harari as his lead lawyer, Georges Kiejiman. The film is not only a gripping account of this celebrated trial, but also explores larger themes around individual and collective responsibility, the way courtrooms can become the battleground for contested narratives about the past, and the swirling forces of race, class, and religion in 1970s France. Joining me to talk about The Goldman Case is Fred Davis, an internationally acclaimed trial attorney, expert on French criminal law and procedure, and Lecturer at Columbia Law School, where he teaches about how to examine comparative criminal procedure through film. Anatomy of a Fall (2023) is an acclaimed French drama directed by Justine Triet, from a screenplay she co-wrote with her real-life partner, Arthur Harari. The movie centers on the criminal trial of a writer (Sandra Hüeller) who is accused of killing her husband (Samuel Maleski) in a small town in the French Alps. The film operates on multiple levels. On one level, it dissects the circumstances surrounding Samuel's death. What caused him to fall from the window of their chalet? Was he pushed? Or did he jump? On another level, the film dissects the deteriorating marriage between Sandra and Samuel and the complex family dynamics surrounding their 11-year-old-son Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner). The film offers a close look at a French criminal investigation and trial. More broadly, it raises questions about the reliability of human memory, the elusive nature of truth, and the complex relationship between law and justice. An introduction to this teaching. Fred's website is www.AwakeningClarityNow.com. Come and explore the Method. This video is part of a long series that presents different aspects of “The Living Method” of Spiritual Awakening, which began to present itself in 2012 through Fred S. Davis. It's a new and original approach to Realization. This is not a path leading to "awakening." There is no path to awakening. In 2023 Fred Davis appointed Dr. Glenda M. Tavormina to be the first authorized teacher of "The Living Method" of Spiritual Awakening. Glenda's initial awakening was an explosive experience in 1988. That experience was followed by 32 years of seeking to recreate it, until seeking ended in 2020 when she experienced “The Living Method” teaching. “The Living Method” was the death of seeking, the birth of true Realization, and the door to the Freedom path. “The Living Method” approach helps students and clients uncover immediate Realization. This is achieved purposely through one-on-one Awakening Sessions, small group Awakening Sessions, using pre-recorded on-demand video courses, or spontaneously through reading Fred's books, watching his videos, or in Sunday Satsang. Following Realization there IS a path - the path of clearing away the believed thoughts and assumptions that have kept us from noticing the immediacy of Freedom.   Fred's website is www.AwakeningClarityNow.com. Courted (French: L'Hermine), a 2015 French drama directed by Christian Vincent, is centered around a criminal trial in France. The accused, Martial Beclin (Victor Pontecorvo), is charged with manslaughter, which carries a possible twenty-year prison sentence, for allegedly kicking his seven-month-old daughter to death. The trial is conducted in France's cour d'assises, which hears more serious crimes. The president and senior judge, Michel Racine (Fabrice Luchini), runs a tight ship. Courted offers valuable insights into judges, jurors, and criminal procedure in France, and provides a vehicle to compare criminal trials there to those in the United States. The film also contains a romantic sub-plot that traces Judge Racine's relationship with one of the jurors and an old friend, Ditte Lorensen-Coteret  (played by the Danish actress, Sidse Babett Knudsen). My guests to discuss Courted and comparative criminal justice in films are Fred Davis, an international lawyer and Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School, and Sam Bettwy, an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Diego Law School and the Thomas Jefferson School of Law.Timestamps:0:00     Introduction5:55     Comparing criminal justice through film10:57   Learning from another country's criminal justice system13:56   The cour d'assises and jury trials in France18:32   The European Court of Human Rights' ruling in Taxquet v. Singer, songwriter, DJ and producer Eli “Paperboy” Reed has spent a lifetime mining the deep vein of Americana — from soul to country to gospel. He has put out eight albums of his own over the past 20 years, including last year's “Down Every Road,” a funky tribute to Merle Haggard. He has mentored and produced the group The Harlem Gospel Travelers, and released a long-buried recording by Cleveland blues musician Fred Davis that was actually recorded by his father 50 years earlier. And this fall he will be putting out a compilation of his 45s called “Hits and Misses: The Singles.” He's teased that with an amazing soul cover of Motörhead's “Ace of Spades,” of all things. Today he joins us to talk about his life in music.   Brooklyn news and views you can use: bkmag.com Email: hello@bkmag.com Follow along on Facebook: Brooklyn Magazine Twitter: @brooklynmag Instagram: @brooklynmagazine Follow Brian Braiker on Twitter: @slarkpope
