EDITED TO ADD: I mis-remembered a couple of details about the back court turnover violation I mentioned in stream. My bad, ya'll. I remembered someone else was near the mid-court line, but it was bc Azzi was chasing Skylar Diggins. Also, when I mentioned Kamilla's positioning, it was her momentum that had her with one foot left in bounds. She wasn't straddling the line or anything. She got the ball without enough time or space to reasonably stop or change direction. See comments for more on this. DESCRIPTION:The Dallas Wings just pulled off an absolute heist against the Chicago Sky. Chicago had the game in hand. Dallas was down by as much as 17. Then, they turned around to drop a season-high 36 points in the 4th quarter to win it by one.Coach said the clock was just on their side, but the analytics say something different. The energy inside the building was incredible. You never apologize for protecting home court in the WNBA, especially when it's a much needed response after a grueling loss.Tonight, we are looking the Dallas Wings' win over the Phoenix Mercury, how Paige Bueckers physically dropped 31 points and played through a rolled ankle, and the impact of injured players and ones who are coming up short. But once we step away from the emotion of the win and look at the actual on-court execution, we have to ask the hard question: Did the Wings actually fix the structural issues that have cost them games this season, or did Paige's performance just temporarily mask them? Bad habits. Bad night. Bad optics. The Dallas Wings have been making steady improvements since their tight 4-point loss to the Minnesota Lynx back in May. Fans expected a hard-fought rematch—instead, they got a 24-point demolition.Minnesota didn't just beat Dallas; they dictated the exact terms of engagement. Using an aggressive, physical "Bully Ball" defense, the Lynx manipulated the intensity dial, broke the Wings' on-court communication, and forced a white-flag "Surrender Lineup" with over six minutes left in the fourth quarter.Even with Paige Bueckers calling for discipline and accountability postgame, other press conference events elevate this game from a bad night to a bad look. Today the WNBA season tips off, but Dallas Wings veteran forward Alysha Clark has already won a high-stakes competition. She – and a Nobel Prize winning economist – were on the team that negotiated a ground-breaking contract for the players. And Alysha wrote all about it in her journal.Alysha is the oldest player in the league – and when she started she was making a yearly salary of about $36,400. The players flew economy, the rookies in middle seats. They doubled up in hotel rooms. The league was just starting out, wasn't bringing in money, and, as Alysha says, “That's just what you got.”Jump forward to 2025 and fans are crowding into stadiums, games are on primetime TV, and the WNBA has a 3.1 billion dollar media rights deal.  So when the players' contract came up for renewal, they had a once in a generation opportunity to change the future for all of women's basketball. Maybe all of women's sports. Today on the show, we hear Alysha's minute by minute account of what it's like to be a rookie doing high-stakes bargaining. It came right down to the buzzer. Our book: Planet Money: A Guide to the Economic Forces That Shape Your Life is in stores now. Subscribe to Planet Money+Listen free: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, the NPR app or anywhere you get podcasts.Facebook / Instagram / TikTok / Our weekly Newsletter. This episode was produced by Emma Peaslee and Willa Rubin.
