In linguistics, code switching is the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of language in conversation. However, for African-American's (and other minority populations) code switching is more of a survival technique. Rather than switching languages, its more like a switch of personas. Let me explain, the words we choose, the content we select, as well as the intonation, articulation, and sometimes the pitch, tone, and resonance of our voices are modulated to match the environment rather than to reflect our true selves. Ok, that may be too extreme, but I'm not far from the truth. See for yourselves as Rhumel and Twanda discuss how code switching has impacted their lives. What is code-switching? | Between the Lines (examples include situations with Trayvon Martin and Sandra Bland)Key & Peele: Obama Meet & Greet (humerous example)TedTalk: The cost of code switchingTedTalk: To code switch or not to code switching. We are NOT Ok. George Floyd was murdered in the street in front of our collective eyes. Protests, riots, and the uncertainty of justice have us feeling all of the emotions. This episode we talk about how we are coping and how we are helping our families through these turbulent times. We are not OK.
A lot of us believe we can tell if our kids are going through something with their friends. We *think* we know them enough to decipher whether their boy/girlfriend is mistreating them. However, studies show that we parents don’t know the warning signs and are therefore likely to miss the red flags. In this episode, I realized that I wasn’t asking the right questions and I didn’t really know what to listen for. Let’s NOT miss the red flags where our children and their friends are concerned. Listen in as Niccolo Ritditti from the Durham Crisis Response Center provides us with the tools to we didn’t know we needed.
Whether you are single, newly married or married for 20 plus years like us, you can learn so much from our parents. They each have been married for more than 50 years. Their love and devotion to each other is adorable and the advice they give is immeasurably wise. This is an amazing episode. Grab your headphones.
**Disclaimer: Despite what it sounds like, Rhumel was not drunk during this recording. Due to a technical issue, the audio from her side had a notable drag causing distortion. That's our story and we are sticking to it. lol ** Now that salons are closed, are you doing the right thing for your hair? I'll admit it, I'm not. Personally, I'm frustrated with my hair and have been eyeing the scissors on my desk. Conditioning? Oh yeah, I should really do that huh? You may not be as bad off as I am, but you have probably experienced some concern about how to best maintain your mane during this pandemic. This episode is for you. Stylist Marlena Johnson is here to help! Marlena joins us to outline simple dos and don'ts to empower us to take better care of our hair until that beautiful day when we can be reunited with our own hairstylist. Pull up a chair and learn with us.
You have opinions... I bet all of your opinions are not popular with the masses. In Episode 32 you will laugh right along with us. We kick back, relaxed and unbothered, and tell you our UNPOPULAR OPINIONS.
“What you doing?”, has to be the most common opener for our texts these days! With the majority of the country under a stay-at-home order, finding ways to stay entertained is first on everybody’s agenda. In this episode, we talk about all the ways we’ve been keeping ourselves busy and entertained during the Covid-19 pandemic including: Exercise (haha) TV Online purchases Arts & Crafts (cooking included) Family time Staying connected to our peeps Work
Black is Black right? Wrong! The amount of melanin in our skin has affected (and still affects) how people see and treat us. For some, ones' complexion affects how they see and treat themselves. We all have a story. Rhumel didn't know she was 'light-skinned" till she got to college. Twanda didn't feel she could be "fine" without light skin and "good" hair. If this concept is foreign to you, tune in, this episode will be informative. For those who have been challenged with ramifications or benefits due to your skin color, we get you. Let's talk about it. Pull up a chair.
Now that we are doing this whole quarantine/social distancing thing, it leaves us time to ponder things we might not give the same time to in different circumstances. For example, have you ever wondered if Love is Blind? Yeah, yeah I know it's a TV show, but it's also one of those questions that deserve some exploration don't you think? Let's get real specific: Can you have romantic love with someone you are not physically attracted to? Spoiler alert! Ya'll know love ain't blind! Haha, I speak for myself though. You'll have to listen to this episode to get both of our views. We will also talk about the cast of characters from the TV show because that deserves some conversation as well. If you *really* don't want to know how the show ends just yet, get your binge on then come back and hit play on this episode.
Parenting isn't easy. You raise them for 18 years, and they become adults. Does your kid's 18th birthday mean that your young adult is ready to face the world by themselves? Does your parenting role end at 18? Most likely not. Often it's a fine line between being a loving supportive guide, and a straight helicopter parent. In this week's episode, we talk about the constant challenges that come with parenting a young adult.
In this week's episode, we go back down memory lane and discuss some of the favorite parts of our collective childhood. Back when we were growing up, things just didn't seem as complicated; we had fun, danced and played. We didn't have cell phones. We had a kitchen phone with a stretched out 25' cord. We had skating rinks and basement parties. So much fun.

Me: ***crickets*** In reality, neither of us is quite in this place at the moment, but it was just a short time ago when we had to strain our brains to remember what we used to do for fun, recreation, & relaxation. Girrrl.... Did you see 50-year-old JLo on that pole during the Super Bowl halftime show? She's got skills. Do you have any idea how much strength those moves required? We do. We tried it (emphasis on *tried*). We took our curiosity to the classroom so-to-speak and attended a beginner pole fitness class to get an up-front and personal experience on this topic. Yup, Twanda and Rhumel on the pole. LOL! It was fun, challenging, enlightening, and at times surprising... we're supposed to do *what* in those high heels? ROFL. Seriously though, we were literally rolling on the floor. Listen in so we can tell you all about it.
