In this week's episode of PSA: The Mental Health Podcast, Izzy teams up with special guest Alyce Rose for an unfiltered conversation on race, masculinity, grief, and group identity. This Mental Man Monday deep dive unpacks three trending and controversial stories dominating headlines and timelines alike. First, actor Malik Yoba, best known for his role in Why Did I Get Married, recently stated that he no longer identifies as Black, choosing instead to describe himself as "non-white." Alyce and Izzy explore whether this is a protective move in a racially charged society—or a form of self-denial that could create more confusion than clarity, especially in professional spaces.Next, the duo reacts to Houston rapper Sauce Walka, who was shot in Memphis and quickly returned to social media with upbeat posts, despite his close friend being fatally wounded. Is his behavior a trauma response, a street image tactic, or something more concerning? Izzy draws parallels to past incidents involving other rappers, raising critical questions about how grief and survival are handled publicly. Finally, Jim Jones goes viral for his comments on fraternities, likening them to gang culture. Alyce, who has first-hand Greek experience, pushes back hard. The conversation also reflects on the recent hazing-related death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson and what this says about accountability, tradition, and the mental toll of belonging. This episode is real, thought-provoking, and layered—perfect for listeners navigating identity, cultural pressures, and emotional growth in today's world. Bitten by the acting bug in college, while teaching, Michael Jai White began auditioning for commercials and acting gigs on weekends and summer breaks. Michael landed the lead role of Tom Robinson in the first Off-Broadway adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird. Before long, Michael would go on to guest star on such hit television shows as Saved by the Bell, Martin, NYPT Blue, and CSI. Proving his acting ability, Michael would soon be cast for the lead role of legendary boxer Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic Tyson which solidified his legitimacy as a dramatic actor in Hollywood. Michael was then cast to play the title character in the movie Spawn which came with the distinction of being the first black superhero in a major motion picture. As he cemented his Hollywood status as a bonafide action star, more diverse roles emerged that allowed him to showcase his physical prowess as well as display his on-screen charisma and comedic ability in such films as Exit Wounds, Undisputed 2, Silver Hawk, Blood & Bone, Black Dynamite and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too playing opposite Tasha Smith. He's currently the star and director of Outlaw Johnny Black. The plot reads, “Hell bent on avenging the death of his father, Johnny Black vows to gun down Brett Clayton and becomes a wanted man in the process. He goes into hiding, posing as a preacher in a small mining town that's been taken over by a notorious Land Baron.” This is a special interview associated with my first documentary, Daredevil Society, a series about the history of stunt performers, including everyone from Buster Keaton to Jackie Chan to Zoe Bell to Keanu Reeves. MICHAEL JAI WHITE BIOA highly trained martial artist and actor, Michael Jai White has broken barriers as a Hollywood star and international box office sensation. With his dynamic personality, agile abilities and a physique of a bodybuilder, Michael has earned respect for his versatile talents both on and off screen.Born November 10th in Brooklyn, New York, it was after watching the movie Five Fingers of Death, Michael's interest in the martial arts began. At the tender age seven, Michael started taking weekly Japanese Jujitsu classes to stay focused while growing up on the tough streets of Brooklyn. By age eight, Michael's family relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut where he studied the Shotokan and Kyokushin forms of karate and earned his first black belt by age 13. Upton graduating from Bridgeport's Central High School, Michael went on to further his education, first attending Southern Connecticut and then UConn. While winning multiple championships as a national martial arts competitor, Michael became a Special Education teacher at Wilbur Cross Elementary School in Bridgeport.Bitten by the acting bug in college, while teaching, Michael began auditioning for commercials and acting gigs on weekends and summer breaks. Michael landed the lead role of Tom Robinson in the first Off-Broadway adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, starring opposite Tony Award Winner George Grizzard. Shortly after, Michael began landing jobs in commercials and guest starring roles on television shows and films; he eventually left teaching and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career full-time.Before long, Michael would go on to guest star on such hit television shows as Saved by the Bell, Martin, NYPD Blue, and CSI. Proving his acting ability, Michael would soon be cast for the lead role of legendary boxer Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic Tyson which solidified his legitimacy as a dramatic actor in Hollywood.Michael was then cast to play the title character in the movie Spawn which came with the distinction of being the first black superhero in a major motion picture. As white cemented his Hollywood status as a bonafide action star, more diverse roles emerged that allowed him to showcase his physical prowess as well as display his on-screen charisma and comedic ability in such films as Exit Wounds, Undisputed 2, Silver Hawk, Blood & Bone, Black Dynamite and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too playing opposite Tasha Smith. The two would ignite such on-screen chemistry, they would go on to start together in the long running OWN Network series, For Better or Worse.Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown, in which he also starred. Based on the cult film Black Dynamite which White created and starred, he would go on to write and produce the hit animated television series bearing the same name. He would also win over audiences in a string of films, including Chain of Command, Chocolate City, Skin Trade, and Falcon Rising. He also guest starred in the recurring role of Ben Turner / Bronze Tiger on The CW hit series Arrow. He is currently directing and starring in Sony Pictures third install, Never Back Down 3: No Surrender, and will also reprise his role as Princeton in the upcoming Chocolate City 2.As a martial artist, in 2013 Michael achieved his 8th black belt from mentor and legendary undefeated kick-boxing champion, Bill "Superfood" Wallace and was honored by Black Belt Magazine as their 2014 Man of the Year. Continuing the legacy of such greats as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael is now the #1 martial arts action star in in America. Michael Jai White resides in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Gillian White and their three daughters. Why Did I Get Married? - Pastor Noah Washington - February 13, 2021
Willie Macc has quickly come a long way as a member of young black hollywood since first becoming known to a national television audience as the funny man on BET's extremely popular College Hill Virgin Islands in the Spring of 2007. He has become one of the few Reality TV stars to make the transition from Reality TV to that of a working actor in Hollywood. Willie Macc's big screen break came with his appearance in the 2008 comedy spoof "Meet the Spartans" where he played a "Yo Mama" joke cracking opponent of the Spartan army. In his second film, "House Arrest", Willie Macc co-stars as the Chris Tucker like side-kick in the "Friday" like direct to home entertainment comedy. Cited as a "modern day Eddie Murphy", Willie Macc continues his destiny to stardom with two additional roles, one being in the action / comedy, "Chicago Pulaski Jones" (written by and starring Kel Mitchel of the "Kenan & Kel" show, and includes a directorial debut by Cedric the Entertainer), and the other being "The Greatest Song" (a wonderful romantic comedy starring Lamman Rucker of Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married" and "Meet the Browns", and national comedian and TV Host, Joe Clair). He can also soon be seen on the small screen in a recurring role in the upcoming television show, "Friends and Lovers: Ski Trip 2". Both an actor and comedian, Willie Macc made his first professional stand-up comedy debut at the famous BB Kings at Universal Walk in Los Angeles on July 31, 2007. He continues to hone his comic skills by performing stand-up comedy routines in and around Los Angeles for both teen and adult audiences. A lover of sketch comedy in particular, he has developed a sketch comedy TV pilot with Barry Floyd (Tee Tee from BETs The Game) and Jonathan Kite (Oleg from Two Broke Girls) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Maybe you're like me and your insecurities are ruining your marriage. Since it’s our anniversary month, I included in my Secret Donuts series here on the podcast the section I wrote about our marriage. My husband, Ray and I are celebrating 11 years of marriage this year and it’s been a beautiful journey. We are meant for each other. Seriously, during pre-marital counseling we agreed on basically everything, held all of the same beliefs, had similar ambitions ...the works. We worked at the same job for years on location, in the same room teleworking, shared the same after work hobbies, share household and parenting responsibilities and all of that. We could be around eachother nearly all the time and never grew tired of one another. We hardly ever argue, never raise our voices, and just get along really well. I believe God made our marriage and our children so easy because He has so much work for us to do as a unit and he didn’t want us to be distracted.Yet where there’s a will there’s a way.You see, in my mind, my husband is like Jill Scott’s character’s husband in Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married.” He’s utterly disgusted with her weight, disrespectful about it, disappointed in her and has stopped loving her because she let herself go. But in my mind my husband is also like Jill Scott’s character’s other husband in Tyler Perry’s, Why Did I Get Married. He’s supposed to love me into self-care, invite me to work out, encourage me, root for me and hold my hand until I get my ish together. My husband is neither. My husband is simply my husband. He doesn't exist to focus on my weight in one way nor the other. But depending on the day and let’s face it, my hormones, I’m treating him like he’s one or the other of these husband characters instead. My insecurities and obsession with my weight have been projected onto my poor husband time and time again and has unfortunately caused unnecessary tension in our marriage through the years. Over the course of writing the book I realized I needed to zoom out and get in alignment with God on the subject of myself so that I could apply what I learned to my marriage. Doing so brought so much more peace to our relationship.Proverbs 14:1 says "A wise woman builds her home, but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands."I apply this scripture to my life in many ways. I build myself up and get secure in Christ so that I am not giving Ray a load he’s not supposed to bear. I’ll be honest and say that I am not there yet. I still slip up from time to time. Everytime I get insecure, I end up feeling crazy about and angry with myself. And I am reminded that it’s me not Ray. I go back to the principal that God loves me unconditionally. From there I can accept that my husband does, too. Believing that stops me from tearing my house down with my own hands. This episode is part three of a 4-part series that tackles some of the themes from my book: Secret Donuts: A Journey to Getting Over Your Weight, Aligned with God and into Your Purpose. Through it, I want to affirmpeople in the fact that God loves them no matter what size they are. He loves us all UNCONDITIONALLY. And from that space, from that understanding, we can confidently and unconditionally love ourselves and accept love from others. We might be more alike than you think... Grab a copy of my book to see what I mean *wink wink*: Secret Donuts: a Journey to Getting Over Your Weight, Aligned with God and into Your Purpose Connect with Alicia on Instagram and let her know your thoughts on this week's episode. The multi-talented Demetria McKinney from FREEFORM much anticipated new series, “MOTHERLAND: Fort Salem,” who plays ‘Anacostia' – an articulate, tough and smart sergeant, whose sole focus is keeping the young recruits alive through their basic training. The show is set to debut in March 18th, 2020. Set in an alternate America where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with the U.S. government to fight for their country, Motherland: Fort Salem follow these young women from basic training in combat magic into early deployment. In this world, the traditional roles of gender and power are flipped, with the more dominant women on the front lines fighting looming terrorist threats that are familiar to our world — but with supernatural tactics and weapons. The series not only stars Demetria, but talents like, Taylor Hickson, Ashley Nicole, Amalia Holm and many others. Demetria, a triple threat in the truest sense of the term, a vocal powerhouse, an award-winning actress, a skillful songwriter and a trend setter. Demetria has played many diverse roles on both the big and small screen. She is showing us why she is making her mark on your TV screens, in movie theaters and on stage. She is also concurrently recurring on BounceTV's, “Saints & Sinners” and “A House Divided” for UMC. You may also recognize McKinney from her role as ‘Janine Payne' on the hit TBS sitcom “Tyler Perry's House of Payne”, which produced over 250 episodes and received five NAACP Image Awards for Best Sitcom. The show now airs in syndication on BET Networks. From Albuquerque, New Mexico to a Military family, Demetria has lived all over the world and was given a drive that resembled that of her parents growing up. Her work ethic, way of life and how she sees life is that of her relationships with her family. Finding an interest in theater since she was little, Demetria decided to go to Okaloosa Walton Community College to study theater, where she took part in different theatrical plays outside and inside the college circuit. However, she didn't finish her degree because other opportunities came calling her name, one being Mr. Tyler Perry. Mr. Perry discovered her in a play that was touring called, “The Woman I am Today,” which she will say “kick started” her career. McKinney also worked with Tyler on his stage play, “Meet the Browns” and went on to star in several of his other plays including “What's Done in The Dark”, “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Madea's Family Christmas”. Her additional stage work includes leading roles in the plays “The Mountaintop”, “Church Girl”, the musical “I Dream” (in which she portrayed Mrs. Coretta Scott King) and “Dreamgirls”, where she performed alongside the legendary Jennifer Holliday. Demetria always makes time for her first love: music. In October 2017, she released her debut album Officially Yours, featuring the single Easy which was a top 5 hit on the Billboard and Urban AC radio charts. Demetria has opened on tour for R&B mainstays including Tyrese, BBD, Tank, and Fantasia. She received a 2017 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding New Artist. For Fun, Demetria loves spending time with her son, taking in a good movie, traveling and even painting art. She is very passionate about cancer research, due to her father, a cancer survivor. On top of that, she spends time in the women empowerment space, especially with young African American Women of Our Communities, which plays a big role in her life, sexual abuse, homelessness and Earth Awareness. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the guys are back to introduce the next film. It's that time again, our once a year deep dive into the crazy that is Tyler Perry. You asked for it, and we shall deliver. Next week's episode is on the 2007 film, "Why Did I Get Married." Dealing with married couples who each have unique interactions and problems. The random topic of the week is all about the rekindle conversation around cultural appropriation/appreciation and Bruno Mars. Is he a culture vulture? What does that mean in the modern era, and why is there such a rift between some GenX and Millenials on this particular topic?
This week, in light of Justin Timberlake’s upcoming Super Bowl performance, we revisit his infamous 2004 “wardrobe malfunction” halftime show with Janet Jackson. We dissect the public reaction to “nipplegate,” why Janet (and not Justin) took the fall, and how the controversy changed the course of both artists’ careers. We consider Justin’s new musical direction in the context his history of appropriating other cultures. And we offer Janet the forgiveness she deserves, realizing that her sexual experimentation led to some of our favorite moments in music history.Discussed This Week:“Is ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ the Most Radical Show on TV?” (Jenna Wortham, The New York Times)Evidentiary Bodies (Barbara Hammer at the Leslie-Lohman Museum)“The Lunar Eclipse and Super Blue Moon Are Here. From 2012: Actress Sharon Leal is a woman loosed… and on the verge. A review of the one-time "Guiding Light" star’s recent credits support this, with ever more visible roles. That was her in two Tyler Perry movies, Why Did I Get Married and its sequel. And she’s been all over TV, including runs on “Boston Public,” “Private Practice,” “Hellcats” and two episodes of one of my recent favorites, USA’s “Suits.” Since this interview, she recurs on "Supergirl" and has a lead in "Instinct" w
