Hair What I'm Saying
Are Black Hair Products Solving Problems or Selling Them?

Hair What I'm Saying

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2026 19:22 Transcription Available

Send us Fan MailThe hair aisle has a script, and it's been playing in our heads for years: control, tame, smooth, fight frizz, define curls. When I hear those words, I don't just think about Black hair products, I think about beliefs and the quiet way beauty marketing trains us to see textured hair as a problem that needs a solution. So I'm asking a bigger question than “who made the rules” about beauty standards. Are Black hair products solving problems or selling them, and what did it cost Black women to believe those messages?I walk through how advertising language shapes self-image, from the idea of hair needing to “behave” to the way straight hair was positioned as professional and presentable. I also revisit the nostalgia and harm wrapped up in kid-focused relaxer marketing, plus the uncomfortable truth behind some of the images that helped sell those products. Then I fast-forward to the natural hair movement and the way the industry pivoted, swapping straightness promises for a new kind of pressure: perfect curl definition, perfect edges, and perfect routines. We also get practical about what hair products and labels don't tell you. “Anti-frizz” can hide the difference between texture and damage, and many hair growth products ignore the real issue: hair retention, breakage, dryness, tension, or even medical concerns. Black hair products can support healthy hair care, but no bottle can override biology, and sometimes the biggest change is the habit shift a product inspires. If you've ever wondered whether you're buying a cream or buying an expectation, hit play. Subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review so more people can keep questioning the narratives we've been handed about Black hair products, natural hair, beauty standards, and identity.Support the showDo you have a story to share that's worth our listeners hearing, please fill out the Listener Letters Form and tell us your story! Welcome to my latest coffee chat  -  First up - Blake Lively probably won't get a damn dime from Justin Baldoni (even though she is still trying to) so thank and praise the LORD. Now she just has to go away and leave Justin Baldoni and all of us alone.  Next, Meghan Markle recently "rebranded" her "As ever" website, but to me it's the same old tired stuff she has already peddled to us, with just a new focus on her. I'm sorry, but I just can't get excited about it.  In this video, I give Meghan some free and unsolicited tips to save her faltering and uninspired brand. She won't listen to me, but that's beside the point.  Also, Meghan is STILL showing us the back of her kid's heads - this time at Disneyland.  It is creepy and I don't like it. For several reasons.  Harry is finding himself in HOT WATER and scandalous accusations regarding Invictus Games and alleged financial mismanagement are swirling- (it's bad.) The future doesn't look too good for the "Duke of Delusion." Lastly, I will share some of my BEST hair care tips and my favorite products that have really helped my recently highlighted, blonde hair feel healthy, soft and shiny at 52! Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Skin Anarchy, Dr. Ekta Yadav sits down with Alli Webb, the founder of Drybar and creator of Messy, for a candid conversation about entrepreneurship, innovation, and the evolving relationship people have with their hair. Best known for transforming the blowout into a category-defining experience, Alli reflects on the journey from launching a mobile styling business to building one of the most recognizable brands in beauty. What emerges is a powerful lesson in how great businesses are built. Drybar didn't succeed because it invented something new—it succeeded because it solved a real problem. Alli shares how identifying an unmet consumer need, combined with relentless focus on experience, consistency, and accessibility, helped create a brand that resonated far beyond the salon chair. The conversation also pulls back the curtain on the realities of entrepreneurship. Beyond the headlines and success stories, Alli speaks openly about the challenges of scaling a company, maintaining a clear vision, and navigating the constant problem-solving that comes with growth. Her perspective offers a refreshing reminder that successful businesses are rarely built through perfect planning—they evolve through resilience, adaptability, and curiosity. As the discussion turns to her latest venture, Messy, Alli shares how a shift in her own relationship with hair inspired a new philosophy. Rather than constantly transforming texture through heat and styling, she began embracing her natural waves and encouraging others to do the same. The result is a brand centered on hair health, authenticity, and working with your hair rather than against it.Listen to the full episode to hear Alli Webb discuss building iconic brands, embracing natural texture, and why authenticity may be the most powerful beauty trend of all.Shop MessyDon't forget to subscribe to Skin Anarchy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your preferred platform.Reach out to us through email with any questions.Sign up for our newsletter!Shop all our episodes and products mentioned through our ShopMy Shelf!Support the show

This episode features an interview between host B Rad Celebrity Hairstylist and guest Jonathan Pike, who introduces a specialized hair care line called Bioveta. Pike explains that unlike traditional shampoos that rely on bonding agents or oils to mask damage, his formula uses an acidic pH to physically close the hair cuticle and neutralize chemical residues. The regimen consists of a three-step corrective process—clean, sleek, and cure—designed to manage moisture and restore structural integrity to all hair types. The conversation highlights how this science-based approach eliminates the need for heavy proteins that often lead to product buildup and hair breakage. Beyond hair care, Pike briefly touches upon his background in corrective chemistry and his expansion into hemp-based wellness and equine products. Overall, the source promotes a minimalist, effective system for achieving healthy, manageable hair without the use of artificial coating agents.https://www.HairstylistEmpowermentPodcast.comhttps://www.Bioveta.comBrought to you by https://www.BeautyIndustryCruises.com

Send us Fan MailBlack hair has been turned into a marketplace for generations and once you notice it, you can't unsee it. Season 6 of Hair What I'm Saying starts with a clear promise: we're not just talking about hair, we're talking about what hair reveals about history, identity, and the stories that shape how we see ourselves in the mirror. We get into how Black hair has been studied, marketed, politicized, and monetized, and how entire industries have grown around telling us what's “acceptable,” what's “professional,” and what needs to be “fixed.” Along the way, we talk about the moment many of us stop asking questions and start accepting routines and rules as fact. I'm inviting you to pull those messages apart and look at what's underneath them: beauty standards, inherited narratives, and billion-dollar incentives that don't always align with our well-being.And let me be clear: Black hair care is not a scam. Our traditions aren't a scam. Protective styling isn't a scam. Taking care of your hair isn't a scam. What we are challenging is the marketing and messaging that can make you feel like your hair must be controlled or transformed to be worthy. Because maybe the biggest thing we've been sold wasn't a product, maybe it was a belief. If you're ready to challenge what you've been taught and question what you've been sold, Season 6 starts now. What happens when you have always been known for your hair, and suddenly you are experiencing hair loss from stress and iron deficiency anemia? We talk about the emotional side of that shift; identity, confidence, and what it really feels like when your “crown” starts to change.Arianna also breaks down the real science behind hair loss and hair health; the difference between shedding and breakage, why lab work matters, and her personal experience with iron supplements versus iron infusions. This is not surface level, we are getting into root causes. We challenge the culture of chasing hair growth at all costs and get honest about scalp care as skin care. Water, cleansing, and maintenance are not optional. Protective styles are discussed in a real way too; how wigs, weaves, and braids can become damaging when they replace consistent care instead of supporting it.Then we shift into purpose. Arianna shares how a therapy session sparked The Hair Care Project, a nonprofit providing hair care services and products to those who cannot afford them. Her story about serving women in a transitional home will stay with you; this is about dignity, healing, and community in real time. This conversation connects hair loss, homelessness, and hope in a way that goes far beyond beauty; it is about resilience, restoration, and redefining what it means to care for ourselves. To stay connected with Arianna Howell, follow her socials below:WebsiteFacebookLinkedInSupport the showDo you have a story to share that's worth our listeners hearing, please fill out the Listener Letters Form and tell us your story! Nearly four years ago, I recorded an episode about why hairdressers should be recommending professional retail. And yet, here we are, still having the same conversation. The fundamentals haven't changed, but the world we're operating in absolutely has. Inflation, online shopping, influencers, and changing client behaviour… all of it has added new layers to old objections. In this episode, I break down why so many stylists still avoid recommending retail and, more importantly, what's really sitting underneath those objections. I walk through the most common excuses I hear, grouped into skill issues, mindset issues, fear issues, and systems issues and explain why teaching product knowledge or scripts alone will never fix the problem. This isn't about being pushy or “selling.” It's about professionalism, service, responsibility, and ultimately the sustainability of your business. If you're a salon owner or a stylist who wants stronger client relationships, better results, and a more profitable salon, this is a conversation you can't keep avoiding.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] Intro: Retail version 2.0: what's changed[01:58] Same salon, same clients, very different retail results[02:43] Why scripts and commissions don't solve retail[03:22] The three real reasons hairdressers should recommend retail[06:49] The 4 categories behind all retail objections[07:39] Skill issues: “I don't know how” and product knowledge[09:40] Mindset issues: “It's not my job”[12:09] Fear issues: The fear of being pushy or transactional[20:06] Systems issues and retail culture in salons[26:30] Final thoughts Want MORE to help you GROW?

The Afro is one of the most iconic hairstyles of the last century. And one of its main ingredients was a hair product – Afro Sheen. But Afro Sheen did so much more than make Black afros shine. It was the money behind the television show Soul Train, it helped fuel the civil rights movement – all because of an entrepreneur named George Johnson. For decades, Joan and George Johnson owned and ran Johnson Products Company, a Black hair care company out of Chicago. Their intimate understanding of what Black people wanted and needed – for their hair and for their lives –  helped grow the Black middle class and became an engine for Black culture and power. They helped turn the Black haircare industry into what is now a multi-billion-dollar industry. But although they helped create this industry, they no longer have a part in it. Today on the show – the story of the rise and fall of Johnson Products.
