This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with Stacy Allred & Holly Isdale. Stacy is a Managing Director and Head of Family Engagement and Governance at J.P. Morgan Wealth Management. She serves on the faculty of the UHNW Institute and teaches for the Investment & Wealth Institute® (CPWA®) program. Holly is the founder of Wealthaven, a family office consulting firm she founded in 2010 after 20-plus years on Wall Street. She is also a Senior Advisor with Lansberg Gersick, a global consulting firm advising significant families on governance and succession planning. Holly teaches at Wharton and Cornell in their Executive Education programs for family office and family business members, including a new Wharton Family Office program in January 2025 for Family members seeking to explore family office governance and operation. Stacy and Holly are both members of Collaboration for Flourishing Families (CFF) and the Purposeful Planning Institute (PPI). They are both active in Family Firm Institute (FFI) and each hold certificates in Family Business Advising and Family Wealth Advising. In their work with families, Stacy and Holly are commonly brought in during a time of transition – between generations, between life stages, between wealth structures, between business, investments, or philanthropic activities – and they reflect on the most common challenges, considerations, and opportunities they believe families in transition face. Stacy recently co-authored The 10x10 Learning Roadmap: Advancing Flourishing in Families of Wealth with Stephen Goldbart & Joan DiFuria, who were on this podcast a couple of months ago. Stacy gives our audience a quick refresher on the 10x10 framework and points out how it can help families in transition and enable their long-term success. The 10x10 Learning Roadmap is a powerful and practical framework, but real-life situations sometimes don't lend themselves perfectly to even the best of conceptual frameworks. Holly talks about how families and their advisors can “work around the framework” whenever they face complexities and idiosyncrasies resulting from their unique DNA and circumstances. Having talked about how family members and their external advisors can benefit from the 10x10 Learning Roadmap, Stacy focuses on the other entities and constituents that comprise the broader family enterprise, such as the family office, the family council, the various committee members, the trustees, etc. She provides her insights into how these diverse players who have widely ranging roles within or in support of the family can utilize the 10x10 framework to help the family flourish. Enjoy this illuminating and instructive conversation with two of the best recognized and celebrated practitioners and advisors in the family wealth and well-being space.

Helping families feel involved in their children's education goes beyond checking the boxes to make sure you're following legal guidelines. That's why I invited Dr. Kristin Vogel-Campbell to De Facto Leaders to talk about how school teams can make the IEP process more welcoming to families, especially those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Dr. Kristin Vogel-Campbell (she/her/hers) is a veteran Special Educator with over 20 years in the field. She has served in various roles from paraeducator to Director of Student Services and Special Education. She was a classroom teacher for a decade in the San Francisco Bay Area, working with students from Kindergarten through 8th grade. She is a systems-focused educator, working at the district level with school teams to ensure that students with disabilities are provided high-quality, research-based instruction and that all students are treated with dignity and respect in the Least Restrictive Environment. In addition, she has supported new site leaders in deepening their understanding of Special Education, including laws and protections for students and families. Kristin is a practitioner-researcher, working with families to share their experiences and perspectives. Informed with this familial knowledge, teams can make practical shifts needed to move to a collaborative partnership with culturally affirming, sustainable, and equitable families. She has presented at AERA (American Educational Research Association), NAME (National Association of Multicultural Education), and ACSA (Association of California School Administrators, among others. Articles have appeared in Leadership (ACSA magazine), The Journal of Leadership, Equity, and Research, and the KQED Education blog. Her book “Partnering with Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Families in Special Education” was published in December 2023 by Rowman & Littlefield. In this conversation, we discuss:✅You've provided the “procedural safeguards”, but do families really understand their rights? ✅What's going on when parents don't show up for parent-teacher conferences and IEP meetings?✅Why environmental set-up matters during IEP meetings; including seating arrangements and how/when the team enters the room. ✅Navigating language barriers, transportation issues, and logistical constraints. ✅Finding the balance between family schedules and staff contractual time when setting up IEP meetings.✅Tips for managing nerves during IEP meetings so you can make your report feel conversational (and less technical). You can connect with Dr. Vogel-Campbell on LinkedIn here (https://www.linkedin.com/in/drvogelcampbell/), and on Instagram here (https://www.instagram.com/drvogelcampbell/). Children and their families need a healthcare system that serves them wholeheartedly. Having their unique needs prioritized creates an important opportunity for lifelong health and wellbeing. However, the current health system in our country and globally has massive gaps to fill, especially as it pertains to children of color. The medical community is focusing on preventative measures and connections between children, families, communities and the systems they interact with regularly. While large efforts are being made across the child healthcare field, there is strong agreement that child health transformation, with a focus on family -centered pediatric care, needs to be accelerated. At the forefront of this work is Hala Durrah, MTA, a patient-family engagement consultant and advocate. Joining us virtually from San Marcos California, she discusses her role on the advisory group of national experts in the pediatric field of accelerating child health transformation initiative. She also has professional experience as a national speaker who has served on a number of national committees. Beyond her professional accomplishments, this topic resonates with her much more personally. Her current work in patient-family-centered care stems from her experiences as a mother of a child who has undergone two liver transplants and a bone marrow transplant. “What I realized when I first knew my daughter was sick, was that this was going to be a journey that required me to be as fully knowledgeable and as fully engaged as possible to advocate for her,” Durrah says. Some highlights from this episode include: How providers and practices can partake in this work The importance of acknowledging patient-family engagement to best care for kids What gaps exist and how this method helps to fill them This episode is underwritten by Aegon Transamerica Foundation, a proud supporter of Charting Pediatrics and Children's Hospital Colorado. The Aegon Transamerica Foundation helps build a better world by committing to the improvement of wellness throughout their communities. Their partnership with Children's Colorado addresses the youth mental health crisis to help create a better mental health future for children. Each One Teach One: Parental Involvement and Family Engagement in Jamaica's Education System (University of the West Indies Press, 2022) is a collection of research studies and essays across multiple educational fields: leadership, psychology, special education, early childhood, literacy studies, mathematics and teacher education. The contributors to this collection provide empirical evidence on the state of parental involvement and family engagement in Jamaica. A team approach has been used in completing the various chapters in which graduate researchers collaborated with lecturers in their areas of specialization. The different voices and data from the participants along with relevant literature shape the dialogue on the importance of home and school collaboration in students' overall outcomes. Each One Teach One provides critical onto-epistemological frameworks grounded within the Jamaican context to examine the scope, prevalence, and effects of parental involvement and family engagement in schooling. The findings, implications and recommendations can guide policymakers in the formulation of strategies compatible with the needs of the schools, students and families and provide indispensable data on how to effectively work together to optimize students' success.
