This week on **Beat Motel**, Andrew's joined by Jago for a full-on rummage through the dusty vinyl crate of movie soundtracks. It's soundtracks, but not as you know them—Michael Caine movies, unexpected Quincy Jones bangers, and one or two synth-heavy horrors. Along the way, they rant about fake live albums, discuss why Portishead's “wrong” notes sound so right, and reminisce about teenage Grebo grievances. Somehow, it spirals into video game scores, the unexpected brilliance of 1930s musicals, and the sheer absurdity of Iggy Pop glitter-riding audiences. And yes, someone has beef with _The Stooges'_ production—sacrilege? Tune in and decide. Grab a cuppa, roll up your sleeves, and dive headfirst into the chaos. Expect the usual mix of music nerdery, dry humor, and head-scratching tangents. ### Riffs of the week #### Jago's Riff - Portishead - Silence (4:02) #### Andrew's Riff - So What - Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans (5:17) ### Jago's track choices 1. Splash Stories -The 90's Music Scene. Legendary London Venue. Telling Tales. New story every 1st of the Month

Splash Stories caught up with Mary Byker well known for his work as the lead singer of Gaye Bykers on Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, Pigface and Apollo 440 and as a record producer and DJ/MC.  We spoke just before he headed off to pick up his new pair of glasses before the start of the Gaye Bykers on Acid's Intermittent Fasting Tour which kicks off 5 Sept 2024 .  GBOA released two indie chart-topping singles, “Everythang's Groovy” and “Nosedive Karma” on In-Tape records before being signed to Virgin Records. In 1987  they released their debut LP “Drill Your Own Hole” which was the soundtrack to an ambitious film of the same name, & toured the US and Europe. During this time Mary made friends with Chicago's infamous Cynthia plaster caster, played Glastonbury Festival, Roskilde, Supported the Red-Hot Chilli Peppers and undertook a memorable European tour with the Ramones and supported Motorhead in Hammersmith. This was followed by the Jon Langford produced critically acclaimed album “Stewed to The Gills” and Mary's favourite track: Harmonious Murder. Mary also played The Splash Club with Hyperhead. Our connection dates back to the mid-1990s, a time when I frequented record stores like Ambient Soho on Berwick Street and Black Market Records on D'Arbly Street, places where Rachel's passion for music shone brightly. Throughout the 90s, she made her mark as a revered jungle DJ, spinning tunes at underground warehouse raves and mainstream venues alike. In this first instalment of our two-part conversation, we explore her early affinity for the Goth and Grebo subcultures, tracing her path from the north to the heart of London. Along the way, we explore her immersion in the diverse tapestry of alternative fashion and underground music scenes that flourished during that electrifying era.Rachel's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/artnglassram/Support the Show.https://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. In Grebo! The Loud & Lousy Story of Gaye Bikers on Acid and Crazyhead (Headpress, 2021) Rich Deakin explores West Midlands 1980s, home to heavy metal. Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are household names, but over the smoking chimneys and factory yards something new and equally ugly forms... 'Grebo' was a media constructed music genre that even today sends a shudder down the spines of discerning music fans and critics.  A homegrown proto-grunge -- counterpart to the likes of Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney, early Nirvana, Alice In Chains, and Soundgarden -- grebo was a British phenomenon that drew on an eclectic range of influences, from punk, 60s garage and psychedelia, through to 70s heavy rock and thrash metal. It foreshadowed rave culture and was steeped in class politics. GAYE BYKERS ON ACID and CRAZYHEAD hailed from Leicester. They were not the first bands to be labelled grebo but they were the most unashamedly unkempt and came to be considered its greatest exponents. They were "a burst of dirty thunder" and almost no one liked them. Based on interviews with band members, friends, fans, and roadies, this book is an uncompromising history of an overlooked music scene. Rich Deakin charts its course via the changing fortunes of the Bykers and Crazyhead, taking us on the booze-filled tour buses, behind the dodgy deals and onto the international stage and back again (with a pitstop for a rock movie that swallows lots of money). Their careers were short, but the two bands managed to shake up the UK indie scene and along the way became Britain's unlikely ambassadors of rock following the collapse of Soviet Russia.  Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Strange as it may seem to us nowadays, Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine had an actual official number one album back in 1992. Grebo is an oft-overlooked genre from the time: is that for the best or are we unfairly overlooking what it had to offer? With opinions ranging from "not really bothered" to "actively disliked them" between Krister and Dave will this album win them round? We talk about loads more in this episode as well including the likes of En Vogue, R. Kelly and Aphex Twin.
