What is up, Slackers! On this week's episode we explore the evolution of grunge beyond its iconic pioneers. Sometimes it is easy to forget that grunge had a second (early to mid-1990s) and even third wave (late 1990s to early 2000s) of bands that shaped the genre's legacy. We highlight 14 second-wave acts, from Seattle's sludgy core to punk-infused and noise-rock outliers - some initially dismissed as posers who would go on to be massive stars. Then, we cover six third-wave bands, blending "grunge" with more alt-rock and indie rock influences. Who knew there were this many grunge bands not named Nirvana, Soundgarden, or Pearl Jam?! Oh, and I fully blame a certain early 2000's band with completely taking down guitar driven rock music - possibly forever.Listen now on Spreaker, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and all major platforms. She recounts attending the Radio 104 Fest and vividly describes how Everclear was not her favorite but ended up being the main act she saw due to time restrictions. A humorous and memorable moment emerges from a misunderstanding that led to her attending a performance by Mono of Japan instead of the expected European band Mono, a life-changing encounter that profoundly influenced her musical tastesGiuliana also narrates her experiences at the Halloween Industrial Music Fest during Hurricane Sandy, where she saw numerous notable acts like Author & Punisher and Theologian in an incredibly intense, weather-challenged environment. Her story culminates in recounting the remarkable Sunn O show, a visceral and intense performance where the sheer power of the sound and visuals led to a memorable audience connection.Throughout the discussion, Giuliana elaborates on her creative process, revealing how she and her collaborators use data sonification and visual cues to guide their live performances and improvisations. Today's Episode Dr. Raj is joined by Kevin Martin from the band Candlebox! Today's Guest Kevin Martin is an American singer who is best known as lead vocalist of the rock band Candlebox. He also provided lead vocals for the bands The Gracious Few and The Hiwatts. Martin was born in Elgin, Illinois. His father worked for a salt company and the family moved to San Antonio, Texas when he was 10. They subsequently moved to Mercer Island, Washington near Seattle when Martin was 15. He and drummer Scott Mercado set out to start a band in 1990. Candlebox was formed in 1991 after guitarist Peter Klett and bassist Bardi Martin joined them. They gained a Billboard 200 top 10 hit in 1993 with their self-titled debut album, released by Maverick Records. The album's success was largely due to the single "Far Behind", a song written about two of Martin's friends who suffered heroin overdoses, including Andrew Wood of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The single reached number 18 on the US Hot 100 and was a top 10 hit in both the US Modern Rock and US Mainstream Rock charts. My guest this week is Erik Himel, who expanded his touring guitar career into hosting the hottest jam night in Hollywood, to producing a Las Vegas show, to custom music programming for private and corporate events. Erik's credits include Powerman 5000, the Russian supergroup Mumiy Troll, Alan Parsons, Eagles Of Death Metal, Puddle of Mudd, Candlebox, Robby Krieger, Michael des Barres, and many more. He was the longtime host of The Sunset Jam, which was the longest running residency show at the world famous Viper Room in Hollywood, grossing a million+ dollars and showcasing over 1500 performers and numerous sponsorship collaborations. I spoke with Erik via zoom from his home in Los Angeles. On the intro I looked at how kids may be losing their love of music, and a new Ai headphone that nails the “cocktail party effect” .
HUMP DAY! Some fog to start the day, but sun & in the 70's later today. We kicked things off with the Wednesday Song, and we recapped last night's action in the NBA & NHL playoffs. Discussed a list of ways to save money on groceries, and also found out that 1/3rd of Americans think that "doing the dishes" counts as exercise. Great story about an Army Veteran who saved a couple of guys who could have drowned after their boat sank, and another cool story about six high school seniors in Boston that got $10,000 scholarships! Talked about Shilo Sanders & also heard some Bush & Candlebox, who will BOTH be in town on Saturday, August 3rd at Copeland Park & Events Center! The phones are sorta working again, so we were able to play "You're Killin' Me, Shaws" this morning, and we talked about the upcoming Olympic protest in France And during today's "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about the dangers of pancakes & tractors, a guy who broke into Buckingham Palace to take a pee, a driving instructor who was drunk while giving a lesson, a turkey hunter that got attacked by a moose, the most arrested man in the world died, a cop who resigned after having sex with a suspect in the back of his cop car, a guy who got naked on an airplane, and a guy who got naked & climbed a Bumblebee statue. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Gavin Rossdale is one of my favorite people to talk to and we got to chat about a bunch of things this time! We got into BUSH coming to the Let's Go Music Festival and their upcoming summer tour, 30 years of the first album 'Sixteen Stone', the competition between bands, why you should take the time to see everyone you can at a festival, different generations of Bush fans that you see at the shows, their greatest hits collection 'Loaded', how much he loves being in the kitchen and how great ice baths are!
Jason and Paul welcome Dave Krusen to the show to chat about drumming, moving back to Seattle, the differences between Candlebox and Pearl Jam, and, of course, all things Ten. The guys also go deep into Dave's feelings on watching Pearl Jam's ascension to legend status...then joining them at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame culminating with his return at the Fresno show in 2022 filling in for an ill Matt Cameron. All that and new music from his band Big Game Hunters. Please consider donating to our non-profit of the month: Mental Health America right HERE.Become a PatronWatch Us on YouTubeFollow Us on InstagramFollow Us on FacebookFollow Us on TwitterJoin the PJ Pod community Hosted on Acast. Today on the show I'm sitting down with BJ Kerwin. He's a craftsman, maker of ‘Awesome handmade furniture for awesomer people,' with Industrial Imperfections, a talented drummer, for local greats, The Last Year and 90's alternative rock heroes, Candlebox, a coffee enthusiast and enough personality to make the seaport sailor blush. Through the lens of social media, I've always felt an unspoken kinship with BJ and think I know enough about him to know that we're going to have a lot of fun today and would likely be kicked off a terrestrial radio station in about 20 seconds. He's got a musical resume a mile long. Join me in welcoming, mad man, rock n' roller, lover of all the good things in life and birthday boy, Mr. BJ Kerwin to the Mouthful of Graffiti Podcast!Candlebox Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/5tUJZ21PJj3SinhyroHCsG?si=KkyWyz74R9CJWkThjAjDJwSpecial thanks to: Double Groove Brewing, Vagabond Sandwich Company, Music Land Store, Heather Sipes - Baltimore Decal Gal, Black Eyed Suzie's, REB Records-MD & Caprichos Books
Who posted on Instagram in November about a pop-up show in NYC's East Village date coincident with my few weeks there that made me cancel my plans and hop the subway downtown to catch her play for a half hour? You guessed it, Mia Morris! This is the interview you don't want to miss. You're welcome in advance! Find out why I not only followed her as a drummer but was taken in by her unique abilities to not only play all instruments but to loop all instruments and play studio versions of her songs, on stage, LIVE in her "One Woman Show". Having rubbed elbows with the likes of Fountains of Wayne (having written a sequel to "Stacy's Mom") and members of All-American Rejects, had features in America's Got Talent and even having opened for Candlebox and Collective Soul, her resume is impressive to say the least. But when you find out she's 19 and rockin' the pocket the way she does in every way, well you see why I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO interview her on the show. Approaching her backstage after the show in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall, she agreed to do the interview. She's here and has given some of the greatest insight yet into the pocket as we do on the show. Her fascinating stories and perceptive and observant viewpoint are keys to her success in touring, session and live drumming, studio and television, "WOW!" is all we can say. Tune in now to hear one of the best episodes. Laugh along with us. This was a fun one! Can't wait for you to hear it so just press play now and get it over with already... you know you want to! DO IT!

Always great to talk with David Ellefson. He has so much going on, as always! This guy has to be one of the busiest musicians in the country. He talked about spending his birthday here in Detroit to see Metallica in early November. He talked as to why he was here, and seeing Metallica was only one part of it. One of his many bands, Metal Alliegence turns 10 this year. He talked about how that project started and the guests that have joined him onstage throughout the years. They'll be celebrating with a concert at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California on January 25th. He also told me about the upcoming Nick Menza documentary "This Is My Life". Will that see the light of day this year? David has an answer....sorta. You can see more about that project, here. Speaking of Metallica, the topic of Lars Ulrich taking on Napster in the mid-90s was brought up. I asked him what he thought about that now, almost 30 years later. David had a lot to say about that moment in music history. I recently saw an article where David picked the top five albums that changed his life. The funny thing is, four of them were from the late 70s/early 80s, and one from 2015, which kinda came out of left field. He told me why he picked that odd one for his list. I'll be honest, it's a band I really love as well! Up next, it's Gavin Rossdale from Bush. He was nice enough to call in to promote the upcoming Loaded: Greatest Hits Tour he's embarking on with his band, Bush, along with Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Chains, and Candlebox. That show touches down here in Michigan at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheater on August 16th. Of course, keep it locked on the RIFF for your chance to win your way in. I had to start out by sending condolences to his dog, Chewy. I actually met that little guy a couple of times backstage. He was a cute little dog that always had his backstage pass on. Gavin spoke to that and the funny reason why he wore it. He said that dog had seen more Bush concerts than his own children. Gavin told me he didn't tour with either one of these bands back in the day, although he has played with them recently. He said that Jerry is a bit of a gambler so that may be a win/loss for him. That lead us into talking about what they do to fill the time on tour. Gavin was on the TODAY show Wednesday, and he talked about that with me. During that appearance, he spoke highly of his kids and their love of American football. Is he watching the playoffs? He answered that as well as his relationship with soccer legend, David Beckham, being that he's a huge soccer fan. Sounds like this is going to be another not-miss tour this summer. A big thank you to Gavin for the time, it's always a pleasure to speak with him.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Candlebox over Zoom video!Celebrating 30 years of success, Candlebox is capping off their long and influential career with The Long Goodbye. The new 10-track collection, produced by Don Miggs, finds the group taking stock of evolving maturity, fleeting time, and lasting love, all while kicking a lot of ass. Lead single “Punks” is a cautionary message to young bands that they won't be the hot new thing forever. Charging forward with a slashing guitar riff and rapid-fire drums, Kevin howls about quick-burning success and vacuous trends. The Long Goodbye also includes the sneering statement of independence “What Do You Need,” co-written by Nick Brown of the alt-rock band Mona, who also appears on the track, and the moody, atmospheric “Elegante,” where Kevin dives headlong into creative wordplay as Miggs and the band mimic a synth-pop vibe with guitars and drums. Elsewhere is the acoustic “Maze” and “Cellphone Jesus,” where Kevin allows some of his worldview to seep in as he searches for a sign from above for a damaged society. The Long Goodbye is ultimately a statement record, a document of a band that somehow survived an era that tragically proved too seductive for some of their peers to remain not only successful, but relevant. And after Candlebox wraps it all up at the end of the year, the hits will still live on, along with a legacy that serves to inspire the young punks who come after them.About Candlebox:Emerging from Seattle's burgeoning mid-90s grunge scene, Candlebox quickly found mainstream success with their deep, lyrically-driven melodies and big radio hooks, as evidenced by their massive hits “Far Behind,” “You” and “Cover Me” that propelled their self-titled debut album, a defining record of the decade, to sell more than 4 million copies worldwide. Their follow-up album, Lucy, earned a platinum certification and solidified Candlebox as a tour de force in the thriving alt-rock scene. While the commercial success of the first album played a pivotal role in the band's trajectory to the top, it was their raw and unapologetically honest live performances that ultimately solidified their place among Seattle's elite. In 1998, Candlebox released Happy Pills, which would be their last album before going on hiatus from 2000 to 2006. In 2008, the band reformed and released their fourth album, Into The Sun, and hit the road for the first time in 10 years, touring extensively and releasing Alive In Seattle, a live album that included tracks from every era of their career. 2016 marked the triumphant return of Candlebox with the release of Disappearing In Airports, a more classic rock-tinged album hailed by many critics and fans as their best work in years. Singles “Vexatious” and “Supernova” drove the album to debut at #9 on the Billboard Charts and spurred multiple U.S. and international tours including major festival appearances at Carolina Rebellion, Welcome To Rockville, and Lollapalooza Chile. While these iconic rockers have been blazing full-steam since, releasing their album, Wolves, in 2021, and recently issuing a live, acoustic album, Live at The Neptune, Kevin and Candlebox are calling it quits in 2023, but they're not going quietly. We want to hear from you!
