His performance culminated in a winner-take-all race at Silverstone, securing him a professional racing contract with Nissan. From winning the GT Academy, Jann quickly made a name for himself in the racing world. 「【スーパーGT】2024シーズン開幕！“世界一速いハコ車”を目指して　モンスターマシンの魅力に迫る」　今週末13日（土）に、いよいよ開幕する日本最大のレース、スーパーGT。日本で開催されている自動車レースのカテゴリーとしては、スーパーフォーミュラと並んで日本最高峰の自動車レースだ。その大きな魅力のひとつは、やはりクルマ。スーパーGTではGT500とGT300、速さの違う2つのクラス、合計40台以上がサーキットを混走。バラエティに富んだマシンがコース上で激しいバトルを展開する。その中でも、日本の３大メーカーであるトヨタ、日産、ホンダが参戦するGT500クラスでは、各メーカーが威信をかけて特注のマシンを開発。時速300kmを超えるスピードで走る“世界一速いハコ車”。そう呼んでも過言ではない、モンスターマシンがサーキットを駆け抜ける。そのマシンの魅力を2023年のGT500シリーズのチャンピオンチーム、TGR TEAM au TOM'Sを率いる、伊藤大輔監督（48）に直接解説してもらった。「レーシングカーなので一番の特徴と言うと軽さ、それから車体の重心の低さです。そこが一番、レーシングカーとして速く走るために必要な部分になってきます」ボディにカーボン素材を使うことにより、マシンの最低重量は1,020kgと、軽自動車並みの軽さを実現。そして、マシンのバンパー下部と路面の間は、こぶしも入らないほどのスレスレの低さになっている。これが、このマシンを時速300kmで走らせるために、もう一つ重要な要素なのだ。伊藤監督「やはり時速300kmで走ろうと思うと、もっともっとこうダウンフォースといって、車を下に抑え付ける力が必要になってくるので、車のありとあらゆるところに、空力的にスムーズに走りながらもきちんとダウンフォースを出せるというようなデザインが施されています」空気を利用してクルマを路面に強く押し付ける力、「ダウンフォース」をいかに発生させるか。それがタイヤのグリップ力を上げ、ストレートの速さと、コーナリングスピードを限界まで引き上げるのだ。

While it's great to keep things original, complications like this are one of the reasons why we see many people update the electronics in older racing platforms in order to give more flexibility and even increase reliability with the modern crop of ECU's and sensors we have available nowadays.One of the interesting aspects of this car is the 28l intake and airbox which allowed for an extra boost of power coming out of the corners before the intake restrictors, the size of which was dictated by the circuit back when it was a factory race car with teams having a range of engine maps to suit.Common to motorsport applications a Hewland split shaft transmission which allows for individual gear ratio adjustment and a PI Research data logging system is in place however other than the general engine inputs for the World Time Attack Challenge, shock potentiometers are the only added extra for the moment along with a GT500 aero setup, GT500 being a less restrictive class in the same series at the time.

Welcome back friends.  Today's episode features the man, Jann Mardenborough.  He's a British racing driver of which started his career by winning the illustrious GT Academy back in 2011.  If you aren't familiar, the GT Academy is an international virtual to reality contest which allows players of Gran Turismo to compete in an effort to become a real racing driver, or atleast be given the oppurtunity to do so.  This is no simple task as Jann beat out 90,000 entrants to secure his victory.  This guy has a special fucking drive (no pun) which has accelerated (no pun) his racing career, one that was never envisioned before.  Since 2011, he has competed in the following disciplines; British GT (GT3), GT4,  Formula 3, 24H of LeMans (3x), Super GT (GT300 & GT500), and the Blancpain Endurance Series to name a few.  For those that are big fans of racing, here are some of the cars he has piloted:Nismo GT-R GT3 (R35)GT-R GT300 (R35)GT-R GT500 (R35)Nismo GT-R LM Nismo (LMP1)Zytek Z11SN - NissanLigier JS P2 - NissanDallara F312That is quite the list innit?  It was an absolute honor to be able to add Jann to the Motor Culture library and for him to talk about some of the intricacies of racing.  Given his wide array of experience throughout multiple disciplines gives him a very intellectual outlook on racing, on driving.  Like me, he likes to get into a car and just fucking drive for no reason and I can truly appreciate that.  His love for motoring is one that flows through both categories of business & pleasure.  So without further adieu ladies & gents, Jann Mardenborough for Motor Culture.  Cheers.Intro & exit track provided by the talented @ArifOmariandFranklinproduction squad.
