The 1974 NFL Draft was historic in many ways. Ed 'Too Tall ' Jones was the first overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys and the first of many intriguing stories. Such as Randy Gradishar being taken by the Broncos with the 14th pick and 50 years later, being inducted into the Hall of Fame. He was one of 7 players who debuted in '74 that ended up enshrined in Canton... 5 of them by the Pittsburgh Steelers in what is considered the greatest draft in NFL history. And get this, not one of them was a quarterback. In fact, no QB's were taken in the first round... or the 2nd round... the first time since 1938 that had happened and only the 5th time ever. But who did get picked in the 15th round? That's right, there were 17 rounds in 1974 and the first pick in the 15th was Billy Johnson... you know him as Billy 'White Shoes' Johnson, the only member of the NFL's all-75th anniversary team not in the Hall... Joining us to talk about this incredible draft is longtime sports talk radio host Paul Jolovitz of WIP sports radio in Philadelphia. Jolly knows his football from half a century ago... and being from DC, he knows Bullets basketball as well. We'll talk about one of the greatest to ever don a Bullets uniform... the great Wes Unseld. Wes wasn't the biggest, but he may be the best to ever play for Washington. Jolly will talk about what it was like to attend Bullets playoff games in his youth when Wes and Elvin Hayes were winning 7 division titles in 10 seasons, culminating in their lone championship in 1978. Unseld and the NFL draft... a lot to talk about with a guy who talks a lot about sports for a living... on this weeks Past Our Prime podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Driving talent only gets you so far in professional motorsport — if you want to make it, you'll need the full package… Plus a healthy dose of luck.In this episode, professional driver Billy Johnson gives us his thoughts on the challenges of turning driving into a job, the best way to spend 10k as a track newbie, why the Skyline GT-R is seriously overrated, the less glamorous realities of 24-hour racing, and much more.Use “BILLY50” to get $50 off HPA's Race Driving Fundamentals course: https://hpcdmy.co/racebBilly Johnson is a professional driving coach, race driver, and factory development driver who has had a long career in the game despite his young age. We start by discussing the path Billy took to be able to drive for a living full-time, despite not coming from a motorsport family. Predictably, this involves a deep dive into karts and his progression through the ranks towards working for Ford developing the GT, GT350, and GT500. Billy has also raced for Ford in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and NASCAR, as well as many other prestigious competitions all over the globe, meaning he's able to give some great insight into what it takes to drive these gruelling competitions and the extremely long stints they sometimes demand. This discussion provides a fascinating insight into the cutthroat world of motorsport at the higher levels, giving us a much better idea of what it takes to rise above all the other equally talented drivers out there gunning for the same seat. The conversation also covers the cars themselves. With Billy's experience behind the wheel of extremely rapid time-attack Honda NSXs, we have to ask him what makes this 90s icon so good, and, in his opinion, why it's so superior to another popular time attack weapon — the Skyline GT-R.With some interesting discussion around motorsport-level driving aids, simulators, and the best beginner track car for under 10 and 50k (is Miata always the answer?), this episode is packed with great info!Follow Billy here:IG: @billyjracingFB: Billy J RacingX: @billyjracingLI: Billy JohnsonWWW: billyjohnsonracing.comDon't forget, you can use “BILLY50” to get $50 off HPA's Race Driving Fundamentals course: https://hpcdmy.co/racebTimestamps:4:04 How did you develop an interest in cars?13:38 Having an understanding of engineering as a driver18:49 Why are karts a normal stepping stone into a motorsport career?20:28 What is race craft?31:18 What is it that makes time attack an interesting form of racing?39:24 Difficulties of going from one warm-up lap to a flying lap in time attack?44:21 What do I do to improve my lap times?54:28 Time Attack NSX and its handling1:07:14 Engine package in the NSX1:09:08 Oil starvation and dry sumps1:15:53 NSX aero package1:18:18 Driver aids1:32:40 24-hour endurance racing, physical and mental fitness1:37:13 Tyre management over a long stint1:44:29 Tips for novice drivers taking their car to the track1:50:41 Does sim driving improve driver skills?1:56:32 What is a good entry-level track car?2:03:29 Final three questions

Billy "White Shoes" Johnson chats with Nestor on Radio Row in Atlanta
Back in the day, describes Billy Johnson, Leland, Mississippi swelled to 4x its present population on Saturday nights. Live music and food carts on every corner down by the tracks. That was way back when a national magazine described this little Mississippi delta hamlet as "The Hell Hole of America." Things like blind tiger booze, chitlin circuit clubs, skin balls, cathouses and card games abounded. But real history was being made, too. Even a teenage delivery boy from Memphis later made a big name for himself. "It was the most amazing thing, so much talent coming from such a small area," B.B. King later said. Funny where a conversation about hot tamales will go! In the sleepy Mississippi Delta hamlet of Leland, walking through the front door and onto the creaking, century-old hardwood floors of the Mississippi Wildlife Heritage Museum is like stepping back into time, into the good ol' days: towering walls covered with ginormous fireplace-blackened deer heads, fishes, game animals big and small indigenous to the Great State of Mississippi; extensive displays of hunting gear, local duck and turkey calls, boats and outboards, clothing from back in Grandad's day, and beyond. Photos. Lots of photos. "The culture that created all of those old Delta deer camps is mostly gone," says Billy Johnson, explaining that museums mostly tell stories. Oftentimes pointing around the room, he then tells some of them in colorful detail. Mostly about people. Born-and-raised nearby myself, I'd not heard most of them before and made a mental note to soon return for second helpings. Enjoy. Suicide is the 12th leading cause of death for Americans today. Over 1.3 million Americans attempted suicide last year alone. Some of us don't understand how suicide can be the answer for someone but it happens. People feel alone, lost, hopeless, and that the world would be better without them. Suicide could be the only answer that appears logical in the moment of despair for many. The goal of this show is to share hope with those who may be thinking about suicide. Today my guest, Kevin Sims, with discuss his challenges with suicidal ideation and how he overcame. My brother, Billy Johnson, completed suicide in 2015 and today this show is dedicated to him. I honor him today and because of him I am able to help others overcome depression and suicidal ideation. The "wine of the day" is Serafin wine from Gadela Winery, a christian winery in Spring, TX. Serafin is a rich chocolate port style fortified with brandy. Intense cherry, blackberry, vanilla, cinnamon and brown.

This week's episode covers part 1 of ‘The Early Years'. We pick up the story in mid-2011. Night Demon had just formed, written and recorded the self-titled EP, and had played their debut gig. For the remainder of 2011, Night Demon was on the back burner as all members were focused on other projects. Drummer Pat Bailey moved 11 hours away to go back to school. For his part, Jarvis was in Jeff Hershey and the Heartbeats land, promoting a new album and giving his all to that project. Armand and Dustin recorded an album called The Uninvited with their band New Liberty, and were relishing their role as local heroes in the Ventura scene. And Brent was heavily involved with The Fucking Wrath (featuring future Night Demon drummer John Crerar), who recorded an album called Valley of the Serpent's Soul with Armand in the producer chair, then experienced the triumphs and tribulations of a US tour. At the end of 2011, however, an encounter between Jarvis and John Crerar helped rekindle interest and excitement in Night Demon.Become a subscriber today at nighdemon.net/subscriber. Heidi Phillips found the inspirado the reform her influential band Frogpond after almost 20 years ironically at the celebration of life of her drummer Billy Johnson at the Madrid Theater in 2017, and in the ensuing years has secured a lineup that make her new music even more relevant and powerful than she imagined, with a new LP Time Thief (Black Site) recorded by Shiner bassist Paul Malinowski that showcases the heft and dynamic of the band. Time Thief is a testament to the fact that Heidi and Frogpond broke ground for all-female bands and broke the mold for what they should sound like. IG Frogpondkc

We're LIVE for this week's Podcast with Billy and women's wrestler Honey Badger in studio! Shout out to Michael Watson and his TheWrestlers PhotoBook project. We got our copy! So. Much. Wrestling. This weekend was RIDICULOUS - in a good way. So...Karaoke at WWE Hall of Fame? We think one of the best parts of the Hall of Fame is the old stories. But, with all the backstage stuff the WWE Network is doing these days, we get those stories elsewhere. We were super happy to see the return of the Salmon Jacket during Mark Henry's induction to the Hall of Fame. NXT Takeover set the bar for WrestleMania weekend and what a bar it was! Sorry ladies for having to follow up that Ladder Match. Gargano v Ciampa was everything we wanted it to be. The IndyIntegration over WrestleMania weekend was good to see! A few people we know took the opportunity to get in front of as many eyes as possible at all the Indy Wrestling shows for WrestleMania weekend - like Dakota Kai who wrestled 6x! Since we talked about Hall of Fame and NXT Takeover, we're ready for some WrestleMania chat! Thanks to @ReginaHBadger for stating the obvious - the Diva Cup shaped like an actual "Diva Cup." The Womens Battle Royal trophy was probably the brain child of the same person who thought Great Balls Of Fire would be a good PPV. Charlotte vs Asuka was as amazing as we expected it. Leave it to the Nia Jax win to make our guest @ReginaHBadger cry tears of joy! So....Ronda Rousy...we have mixed thoughts - including some Tilted Kilt references, but kudos to a legit match on the biggest stage at WrestleMania. Spoiler: There are no good guys in UFC. WTH WWE? Nicholas wasn't even a Make A Wish kid?!?!? Not cool JohnCena. That spot had to happen at that particular moment? You couldn't let the women have their moment? OH: Undertaker looked beautiful - and I'm not talking about the extensions. Elias killed it. RELATED: May have been the only time we were legit pissed at Elias. HE'S NO UNDERTAKER! MayhemMania is put away until next year. But, it's the return of the Big Question! This week's question: What makes WrestleMania different from any other wrestling show that WWE does? Why ISN'T WrestleMania considered for an Emmy? Our guest @ReginaHBadger is sharing some thoughts on Intergender matches in WWE. What did YOU learn in wrestling this week? Heading to WrestleMania? If you see a Mayhemmer, say hi! If that Mayhemmer's Mad Mike, give him a chop and send us a pic or video clip. We'll include it on next week's show! This week's episode is brought to you by Slice on Broadway, Occupy Pro Wrestling, and Indy Wrestling US. It's the last Tuesday before WrestleMania, which can only mean one thing...PATREON IN THE BANK! And, it's a full house for the occasion. In addition to being joined by a special guest, Todd DeFazio of Idiot Radio, we've got Bobby, Billy F'n Johnson, Larry, Sorg, and Mad Mike talking about: We attended RAW and Smackdown last week (which meant no live show on Podcast Day) so we're running through our brief thoughts heading into WrestleMania. We're talking some NXT Takeover as we head into WrestleMania! Is John Cena emoting the same feeling as being turned down at the high school dance or a kid throwing a tantrum? ARE WE SEEING A HEEL TURN ON THE HORIZON? It's astounding the number of WWE guys without contracts around WrestleMania time... Anyone else notice The Miz' post-baby glow? Is there a WrestleMania match that's booked that you can do without? With all the matches booked for WrestleMania, we're talking about which ones we see winding up as the main event. More Brain Strowman please! It's officially MayhemMania time. Since it's the last show before WrestleMania it's time for Patreon in the Bank! We are eliminating the hell out of Randy Orton in this segment of MayhemMania. Apparently there's not enough carnage on our MayhemMania card? AJ may have just booked a MayhemMania match with a Hair vs Hair match of RAW v Smackdown women. Matt has a MayhemMania list of cast-offs in a Cleveland cup. It seems so appropriate as our punishment options. We've had so many changes to the MayhemMania card that we need to have a refresher halfway through to clarify what we've even booked. Billy is using his god-like power as a Pizza Club Patreon supporter to blow this MayhemMania card up. What did YOU learn in wrestling this week? Thanks to Tonio Garza (@TheWRevolution) for putting together graphics for MayhemMania. Heading to WrestleMania? If you see a Mayhemmer, say hi! We're deep in the throes of Mayhem Mania this week as things keep getting more and more intense! As an added bonus, we have one of the area's hottest tag teams in studio as we're joined by “The Gavel” David Lawless and Officer Dan. We're talking all things wrestling this week, including: Thanks to David Lawless, the term moron is now a term of endearment among our crowd. Thanks to Billy Johnson for our OFFICIAL Rusev Day calendar for the studio. Now we know that every day is Rusev Day! Bobby made WWE's radar – – by accident. So, a 2-hour match on RAW? We're getting ready for Elimination Chamber. Apparently, so is WWE. We're making our Elimination Chamber picks! Who do you think/want to win? It's the Ewomenation Chamber! If Rhonda Rousey goes to Elimnation Chamber, does that give her a home-field advantage? OH: You don't just turn into Chun Li overnight. David Lawless' tagteam partner, Officer Dan joins us for the 2nd half and Mayhem Mania! It's time for last week's Mayhem Mania wrap-up, so we know what we're changing this week! What did YOU learn in wrestling this week? Thanks to Tonio Garza (@TheWRevolution) for putting together graphics for MayhemMania. It's a packed house for this year's Mayhemmies episode with Billy Johnson, Chad the Shad, Larry, Sorg, Mad Mike, and Bobby F J-Town. This week we're talking about: It's time for the Mayhemmy winner announcements - including a special address for the Best Dressed guest! We have Duke Davis live via video to accept his Best Dressed award as part of the best dressed tagteam guests Locked 'n Loaded. Congratulations to Eric VanWagenen on the Interview of the Year Mayhemmy! The Award for Excellence in Independent Wrestling goes to Joey Ryan! Moment of the Year Mayhemmy goes to Sorg and his Boop the Internet moment. Producer Missy would like to thank everyone who voted her Personality of the Year. xoxoxo We've got some big Lucha Underground news and thoughts at the top of the show this week. It's been a bit since we've touched upon the Mixed Match Challenge, so we're fixing that. Mixed Match Challenge is pretty much what we'd expect for a Facebook audience item. We may have devolved the conversation into fonts and graphics. This week's Big Question: What is your fantasy booking for Lucha Underground's new ice theme? It's time for Mayhem Mania (with Chad the Shad). What did YOU learn in wrestling this week? Thanks to Tonio Garza (@TheWRevolution) for putting together graphics for MayhemMania. It's the return of the WMS prodigal son! That's right, Eamon returns to the show. Sorg, Mad Mike, Larry, and Chad the Shad are joined by Eamon just off the heels of Wrestlemania weekend for Wrestling Mayhem Show 565. Of course, we talked what's happening in the world of wrestling this week, including: It apparently takes Wrestlemania to bring Eamon back to the show! We've managed to pull Eamon away from his regularly scheduled Dungeons and Dragons. Guys. We're talking Wrestlemania, and other stuff in wrestling this week. This could be Sorg's favorite Wrestlemania - top to bottom, a great show (minus the non-wrestling stuff). We're a little split - did you feel Wrestlemania ran long? Or did it keep you interested so you didn't notice? Sharing some thoughts that Smackdown Live matches tonight were more like Wrestlemania matches. Some thoughts that the John Cena match at Wrestlemania fell a little flat for what a Cena match could have been? How many of us thought John Cena wrestled with a ring in his pocket? The Wrestlemania win with Nikki Bella and John Cena was a contractual obligation for Cena's house rules. The real MVP of Wrestlemania was the security guard who tried to stop Gronk. Gronk may have been too hype for Wrestlemania. The Battle Royal at Wrestlemania felt like a legit battle royal match. 3MB v Sanity at NXT Takeover Brooklyn. We're calling it now. Shout out to Billy Johnson and the great studio decor. AJ Styles' shampoo commercial spot at Wrestlemania was as good as the match itself. Of course, we need to talk about NXT Takeover! Speaking of NXT - we're talking about the talent upgrades to RAW and Smackdown. Our crew has some mixed thoughts on the NXT and TNA shakeups. Larry is upset that the Shinsuke Nakamura Smackdown Live spot wasn't Nakamura mistaking The Miz for Cena. Post-Wrestlemania has been as amazing as Wrestlemania. We're sharing some thought. Speaking of The Hardys coming back to WWE, they WILL be at IWC this weekend! We're trying to figure out how to work a New Day "Hoooo" chant into a "Fuck That Owl" chant. Cesaro is great on his own, but he's also amazing as a tagteam partner. Guys, Emma FINALLY returned - just as awesome as she was in NXT. Emmalina = Lana's Instagram posts without Rusev reading Harry Potter in the background. Thanks to Vaughn Johnson for bringing up the discussion of how the roster shakeup will address titles. Kurt Angle. On RAW. Sign us up! All of the stereotype biker comments are coming out about Triple H and Stephanie. Wrestlemania entrances...we're sharing thoughts. It's time for the Big Question: What trade would you make in the WWE roster shakeup? We're talking about some of the great Hall of Fame moments. There are mixed feelings about Kurt Angle's Hall of Fame speech. Secondary Big Question: What was the biggest WTF Hall of Fame moment? What did YOU learn in wrestling this week? Shout out to JaXon Argos and his amazing sign placement during John Cena and Nikki Bella proposal spot!
