What are some key criteria you consider when determining the right role to hire at a specific stage of your business? What strategies can be employed to uncover the root problems rather than just treating symptoms? In this engaging episode I chat with Gwen Bortner, the founder of Everyday Effectiveness. She is a no-nonsense Operational Strategist and Business Advisor with an intuitive coaching mindset. She helps visionary female entrepreneurs achieve their most ambitious goals without the stress and overwhelm of trying to do it all on their own.  Gwen shares valuable tips on hiring strategically, emphasizing the importance of finding team members who complement rather than mirror the business owner. Her approach comes from the belief that personal and professional success looks different for everyone, and most business owners waste time and energy trying to conform to outside expectations and definitions of success.  Throughout our conversation, we explain the challenges of scaling a business effectively highlighting common pitfalls like mistaking operational issues for marketing problems and the importance of a holistic, strategic approach to business operations. We advocate for investing in strategically minded operational leaders who can address deep-rooted issues, ensuring the business model is designed for long-term success rather than quick, reactionary fixes!   In this episode we explore: Trial and Error in Hiring Benefits of Working with Specialists Challenges that Hinder Business Success. With host retail coach Wendy Batten   https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/   Show Notes: What should we focus on in our retail operations? On Episode 183 of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, fellow retail business coach Gwen Bortner and I turned on the mics for a little impromptu chat about retail business operations. Like me, Gwen has a background in retail. Her coaching business focuses on the operations of her clients' businesses so that their businesses support their lives rather than the other way around.   In our coaching careers, Gwen and I have found that after the start-up phase of business is over (in my experience 2-3 years after start-up), business owners are spending their energy mostly on marketing, in reality, it's often the operations of the business that also needs our top attention and consistent fine tuning.    In order to move the needle in your business, the first step is to identify where the bottleneck is.    Gwen's clients participate in a rating exercise called The GEARS Assessment. It is an assessment of operations and is designed to be completely subjective. Essentially, you evaluate 5 operational aspects of your business on a scale of 1-4. The total number can give you an idea of how you feel about the operations of your business and individual scores can give you an idea on where the most necessary (and likely easiest) operational fix in your business is right now.    You can take the GEARS Assessment for FREE on Gwen's website HERE.   Goods – Products and services you sell Effectiveness – Personal and team productivity, business leadership Accountability – Prioritizing what is important and taking consistent action to reach goals Resources – People, money, equipment, technology, and similar Systems – Processes, routines, and reporting   Gwen is a special guest coach inside the Retailer's Inner Circle, teaching Open To Buy inventory management.    As listeners of this podcast, you know I encourage weekly CEO dates: something that doesn't often come easily to creative business owners. So many of us are accidental entrepreneurs: our businesses started as a passion project that grew and grew leaving us on a hamster wheel. What you need to remember is that it is okay to ask for help: NO ONE IS DOING THIS ALONE - nor should they! However, as leaders of our businesses we need to have our finger on the pulse of all of the operational aspects of our businesses. Gwen's GEARS Assessment is the perfect place to start. About Gwen: Gwen Bortner is the founder of Everyday Effectiveness, an operational advisory firm that helps visionary entrepreneurs scale their businesses to seven figures and beyond. Before becoming a full-time business advisor in 2015, Gwen solved operations problems for corporate giants like General Mills and for niche companies like the world's largest supplier of bull semen. To date, she's advised executives, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs in over 40 industries, including craft retailers and industry leaders. In addition to advising and speaking on operational strategy, Gwen is the author of the best-selling knitting book, Entrée to Entrelac, and teaches knitting internationally for Craft Cruises, Inc.   Follow along with Gwen on LinkedIn. She had originally planned on being a math teacher but her immediate future took a different path when she discovered computer programming back in the early ‘80s, when PCs were a novelty, and dial up was the hottest technology.   This led to a decade and a half career spanning from those first years of dial up to the early stages of wireless, during which she ran her own consulting company, worked as a consultant for Ernst & Young LLP, and ran the IT department for a competitive phone company. As a consultant she has worked with clients ranging from Sprint, to a machine shop supplying high tech wheelchair parts, to the largest international distributor of bull semen.   Fifteen years after making the logical and obvious transition into professional knitwear designer and instructor, Gwen returned to her first loves of consulting, speaking and training. Gwen Bortner is a speaker, trainer and consultant focused on the craft enthusiast niche. Her passion is working with small business owners helping them reach their individual success goals. She calls it the light bulb moment. That moment when everything clicks into place. When an obstacle is overcome or when a goal is met or a long sought-after answer is realized. Gwen has taught craft and business classes throughout the country for over 15 years. She is the author of Entree to Entrelac, an instructor for Craftsy, and the past Interim Executive Director of The National Needlearts Association. Being a passionate believer in abundance, Gwen knows that when we work together to improve our industry, our individual businesses improve as well. The Start of GwenBortner.comBack in college, Gwen reconnected with her childhood love of knitting. For a short time she worked in a yarn shop with the thought that someday she’d have her own yarn business. With a degree in computer science, she worked for Ernst and Young and ran an IT department for a phone company. During the dotcom down-turn in early 2000, she laid herself off, focused on her hobby of knitting and started a company called Knitability. As the business advanced, she realized that what made her really happy was being a knitting instructor. Three years ago, she decided to combine her historical experience in the professional business world with her current experience in the crafting industry. This became GwenBorton.com. Business Building InsightsTo be successful long term, you have to treat a hobby like a business. One part of marketing is the passion and excitement you project onto your product. When starting a business ask yourself: “What are my true goals and objectives?” Get down to specifics! Being in business completely changes your relationship with your hobby. When making a plan, the key to action is to determine the most critical next step. Don’t compare the first or second chapter of your business story to someone else’s chapter twenty. Focus on your own journey. Learning in and of itself has zero value, applying learning has value. Handle your email well: Read it and delete it, respond to it, & file it.
