The Trump administration has issued approximately 130 executive orders so far, and many deal with environmental and energy matters. Listen as David Colvin and Karen Davis, Co-Chairs of our ESG Practice, dive into the emerging themes of these executive orders. They specifically dig into the details of EO 14260, “Protecting American Energy From State Overreach" — which calls for federal action against localized energy laws — and speculate whether the Trump administration will join litigation challenging energy laws out of New York and Vermont. The bite-sized episode also explores how this executive order aligns with current EPA policies.

When it comes to the causes of environmental destruction and overconsumption of resources, the meat industry is at the top of the list. Meat production uses massive amounts of water and land, and leaves behind devastating amounts of pollution and greenhouse gases. America's livestock industry — particularly through grazing on public lands — is one of the greatest threats to endangered species and habitat.   How to support the podcast: Share with others. This episode is dedicated to the legendary Karen Davis, PhD, founder and president of United Poultry Concerns (UPC). Karen died on Nov. 4th 2023 of cancer. Vegan since 1983, Karen was an activist, author, outspoken animal advocate, and had a sanctuary for rescued birds on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. United Poultry Concerns was the first sponsor of this podcast and our host, Hope Bohanec, worked with Karen at UPC for close to a decade from 2012 - 2021. Karen started United Poultry Concerns, the first ever organization focused on chickens, in 1990. She wrote numerous books on chickens and turkeys and advocated for an end to not only the farming of these birds, but also cock fighting, down, foie gras, Kapporos, birds used in experimentation, and many other exploitive practices involving chickens and other birds. This episode is a compilation of highlights from the four times Karen was on the podcast. Karen tells the story of how she was inspired by the animal rights movement in the 1980s and how she started United Poultry Concerns. Karen shares some of her philosophies and unique thoughts about chickens and animal advocacy. She also talks about the plight and delight of turkeys. She discusses the importance of language and reveals how she believed chickens, and all animals, have Earth Rights. Rest in Power Karen, we will carry on in your honor. Resources: United Poultry Concerns

In Memory of Karen Davis: Chicken or Broiler, Cow or Steer, Owner or Guardian? by Karen Davis at UPC-Online.org Original post: https://www.upc-online.org/thinking/140501_liberating_the_language_of_animal_abuse.html  *************** The world lost an amazing advocate and educator when Karen Davis, founder of United Poultry Concerns (UPC) “passed away peacefully on the morning of November 4, 2023 at the United Poultry Concerns sanctuary,  surrounded by her beloved birds,” UPC announced, pledging to “continue her vision and legacy through our sanctuary and vegan advocacy.” Karen Davis was an icon. She was instrumental in my vegan journey. I learned to understand, love, admire, and appreciate the amazing birds she dedicated her life to educating people about, and am honored to be able to share some of her teachings on the podcast. Many times it was difficult to narrate her articles as they were bringing me to tears. Other times her articles would fill me with joy as I read about the amazing social lives of these precious innocent, defenseless individuals who deserve to be protected and respected. Karen was President and Founder of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of chickens, turkeys, ducks, and other domesticated birds. She created an amazing, open-air, covered sanctuary in Virginia to house and care for them. She is the author of numerous books, essays, articles and campaigns, and host of the Thinking Like a Chicken podcast. I hope we can all step in to help fill the gap in chicken and turkey advocacy left by her passing. If you'd like to listen to past episodes highlighting some of Karen's brilliant work, check out the following. It's amazing to see just this tiny subset of her contribution. Let's all band together and continue to educate ourselves and advocate for these birds.

They're an organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domesticated birds. They also have a sanctuary for chickens in Virginia.   Karen and I did this interview as a live episode in June. I wanted to talk to Karen about chickens for a couple of reasons, one because they're the most abused land animal on the planet; but also because I wanted to know more about them.   Before this conversation I knew very little about chickens. And Karen knows everything there is to know them. She has been advocating for them, studying them, saving them, and writing about them for decades. Her most recent book is called For the Birds: From Exploitation to Liberation.   Every year, a staggering 70 billion chickens are raised and slaughtered for meat, and around 300 million more are kept for egg production. And every single one of them is an intelligent, sentient individual.
