With host retail coach Wendy Batten https://wendybatten.com/podcast-intro/ Show Notes: What should we focus on in our retail operations? On Episode 183 of the Creative Shop Talk Podcast, fellow retail business coach Gwen Bortner and I turned on the mics for a little impromptu chat about retail business operations. Like me, Gwen has a background in retail. Her coaching business focuses on the operations of her clients' businesses so that their businesses support their lives rather than the other way around. In our coaching careers, Gwen and I have found that after the start-up phase of business is over (in my experience 2-3 years after start-up), business owners are spending their energy mostly on marketing, in reality, it's often the operations of the business that also needs our top attention and consistent fine tuning. In order to move the needle in your business, the first step is to identify where the bottleneck is. Gwen's clients participate in a rating exercise called The GEARS Assessment. It is an assessment of operations and is designed to be completely subjective. Essentially, you evaluate 5 operational aspects of your business on a scale of 1-4. The total number can give you an idea of how you feel about the operations of your business and individual scores can give you an idea on where the most necessary (and likely easiest) operational fix in your business is right now. You can take the GEARS Assessment for FREE on Gwen's website HERE. Goods – Products and services you sell Effectiveness – Personal and team productivity, business leadership Accountability – Prioritizing what is important and taking consistent action to reach goals Resources – People, money, equipment, technology, and similar Systems – Processes, routines, and reporting Gwen is a special guest coach inside the Retailer's Inner Circle, teaching Open To Buy inventory management. As listeners of this podcast, you know I encourage weekly CEO dates: something that doesn't often come easily to creative business owners. So many of us are accidental entrepreneurs: our businesses started as a passion project that grew and grew leaving us on a hamster wheel. What you need to remember is that it is okay to ask for help: NO ONE IS DOING THIS ALONE - nor should they! However, as leaders of our businesses we need to have our finger on the pulse of all of the operational aspects of our businesses. Gwen's GEARS Assessment is the perfect place to start. About Gwen: Gwen Bortner is the founder of Everyday Effectiveness, an operational advisory firm that helps visionary entrepreneurs scale their businesses to seven figures and beyond. Before becoming a full-time business advisor in 2015, Gwen solved operations problems for corporate giants like General Mills and for niche companies like the world's largest supplier of bull semen. To date, she's advised executives, entrepreneurs, and solopreneurs in over 40 industries, including craft retailers and industry leaders. In addition to advising and speaking on operational strategy, Gwen is the author of the best-selling knitting book, Entrée to Entrelac, and teaches knitting internationally for Craft Cruises, Inc. Through online classes, business coaching programs, speaking, and a top-ranked podcast, I've helped hundreds of retailers around the globe reclaim their dream and see the success they want from their beautiful shops. my signature private coaching community, The Retailer's Inner Circle, has helped retailers around the world build their retail business skill sets and confidence. I am proud to have been featured in several major publications, including my own business column in What Women Create magazine. I have been privileged to be a guest on top-ranked podcasts and sought-after as a guest speaker and teacher for several brands, associations, and communities that are passionate about the success of independent retailers. When I'm not coaching, you will find me either DIYing and renovating my very imperfect old crooked cottage by the sea in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Lunenburg, NS, or blogging about our travel and RVing adventures and the weird fun things we get up to in our coastal village.

Gwen Bortner is a speaker, trainer and consultant focused on the craft enthusiast niche. Her passion is working with small business owners helping them reach their individual success goals. She calls it the light bulb moment. That moment when everything clicks into place. When an obstacle is overcome or when a goal is met or a long sought-after answer is realized. Gwen has taught craft and business classes throughout the country for over 15 years. She is the author of Entree to Entrelac, an instructor for Craftsy, and the past Interim Executive Director of The National Needlearts Association. Being a passionate believer in abundance, Gwen knows that when we work together to improve our industry, our individual businesses improve as well. The Start of GwenBortner.comBack in college, Gwen reconnected with her childhood love of knitting. For a short time she worked in a yarn shop with the thought that someday she’d have her own yarn business. With a degree in computer science, she worked for Ernst and Young and ran an IT department for a phone company. During the dotcom down-turn in early 2000, she laid herself off, focused on her hobby of knitting and started a company called Knitability. As the business advanced, she realized that what made her really happy was being a knitting instructor. Three years ago, she decided to combine her historical experience in the professional business world with her current experience in the crafting industry. This became GwenBorton.com. Business Building InsightsTo be successful long term, you have to treat a hobby like a business. One part of marketing is the passion and excitement you project onto your product. When starting a business ask yourself: “What are my true goals and objectives?” Get down to specifics! Being in business completely changes your relationship with your hobby. When making a plan, the key to action is to determine the most critical next step. Don’t compare the first or second chapter of your business story to someone else’s chapter twenty. Focus on your own journey. Learning in and of itself has zero value, applying learning has value. Handle your email well: Read it and delete it, respond to it, & file it. Hi, Knitters,For email subscribers please Click Here to watch the 24-minute video on YouTube!Click here to subscribe or check out the Susan B. Anderson Podcast on iTunes!I am a bit scattered off and on so hang in there with me to hear about the fantastic giveaway. There is much to talk about and link for today's short podcast episode but most importantly I want to share a few photos of the Knitcircus Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets that I am giving away so you can get a good picture of what the socks look like. This is a new gradient concept created exclusively by Knitcircus and the owner and my friend Jaala Spiro. The photos for today's post are taken from the Knitcircus Etsy shop with permission.I love this fun photo of the Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets colorways. It is a unique concept to have gradient stripes plus the yarn is squishy and compelling to knit. It's a winner all around. The change in stripe colors is gradual and interesting and subtle. You will love this yarn!Come What May Colorway of the Gradient Stripes Matching Socks SetThis is the next colorway I want to get and knit up right away! I have to put my order in with Jaala. This is the matching socks set colorway called Tropical Sunset. I knit the one sock in Tropical Sunset that I'm giving away to a lucky winner! I used up one ball and you will get the other ball to complete the second sock. It is gorgeous and fun!I will select two winners for the Knitcircus Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets. The prizes are as follows:~ One winner will get the already knit sock by me and the second ball of yarn to make a matching sock. I show this already completed sock on the podcast.~ The second winner will get a Gradient Stripes Socks Set in their color of choice. You don't need to watch the video to enter to win!To enter leave ONE comment on this blog post that includes an email address or your Ravelry ID or username. Please be patient for your comment to appear on the blog, there is a delay for me to approve comments. Please don't keep posting the same comment by pushing the publish button more than once, multiple entries make it an unfair contest. I know sometimes it is an accident so no worries, I try my best to take out multiple entries as I publish comments. The one sock I knit from the set, that I shared on the podcast, is made using my How I Make My Socks free pattern on US size 1 needles, casting on 64 stitches with a 7-inch cuff. The foot length is easily adjustable. The sock is knit to fit a US 7.5-8 women's shoe size.Click here for the How I Make My Socks free pattern!Okay, now for the various other links I discuss in podcast Episode 10:Two Minor corrections: 1. I say I never got to wear blue when I meant to say I always wore blue. (I also never complained to my mom about my dislike of blue so she had no idea.) 2. I say I am going to make baby size fingerless mitts ~ no to this ~ I meant to say thumbless mitts for a newer baby or infant.Twinset Designs podcast with Jan Hamby of Fair Winds Farm on Etsy ~ coming soon! (the beautiful teal alpaca farm yarn)!Eggy Johnson sock yarn ~ no online shop. Barbara is a good one to follow on Instagram as ravblb and on Ravelry as blb. I don't know if she takes requests for her yarn or not. It is really beautiful.I'm wearing the Lullaby Rain Shawlette by Paula Emons-Fuessle. I fail to mention this at first. The yarn for the Lullaby Rain shawlette is Quince & Co. Finch in the Frank's Plum colorway. The shawl pin is from Deerfield Creations. I love this light-weight shawl pin, highly recommend.Waiting for Winter Mitten and Fingerless Mitts pattern, the stripey Noro Kureyon Mittens. Here is the link to the blog post about the stripey mittens I made in Maine. Here is the photo of the Entrelac piece I frogged to get 5 mittens worth of Noro Kureyon. It was about 10 years old and still on the needles (literally).Sheppard Handmade Etsy Shop ~ one of my favorite pottery artists sent me the sheep mug as a thank you for hosting a giveaway for her. I love her buttons and have used them on several projects. She is wonderful and has great customer service located out of Canada. Highly recommend her shop! There were a few other things I picked up in Maine that I forgot to share and I will do so another time very soon. Don't forget to enter the super fun double sock sets giveaway including one already knit sock by me!!! Leave a comment to enter if interested in winning the Gradient Stripes Matching Socks Sets. 2 winners randomly selected soon.Love you all! Thanks for the constant support and for the fun you bring to my life.xo ~ susan
