Join us as Angelique Fish the co-founder of The Wine Hiking Society, shares her personal journey of healing and empowering herself and other women by getting into the outdoors through hiking and backpacking. During this episode we talk about: making the decision to have an awesome life despite challenges, empowerment and healing through hiking and backpacking, releasing limiting beliefs around the outdoors and women, transitioning from fear to freedom and leading and so much more! Angelique Fish is originally from a teeny tiny town (population of 80) in Oklahoma where “over yonder” is a place and where people say things like “warsh” instead of “wash”. When she was 30 years old she spontaneously signed up for a backpacking trip to Havasupai Falls and absolutely love it. That trip and the end of her 10-year emotionally abusive marriage were the catalysts that lead her to discover her love for hiking backpacking and traveling. She now lives in Utah with her husband Rob and is incredibly passionate about getting women into the outdoors through hiking and backpacking and creating a sense of sisterhood of women being allies to other women because we are all on the same team. Angelique says “I will never forget how empowering it felt to hack away at a fallen tree for firewood, to filter water for cooking and drinking from a flowing stream, and to sit down at the end of a long, tiring day and enjoy good conversation with great friends and no distractions. It's those feelings of strength and sisterhood that I want to pass on to other women, to know what it's like to only have the stuff on their back, the women beside them, and—most importantly—themselves to count on.” CONNECT WITH ANGELIQUE Instagram: @adventures_of_afish @winehikingsociety Facebook: womenswinehikingsocietyofutah CONNECT WITH TISHA: Instagram - @beautifullyunwinding Blog - www.beautifullyunwinding.com If you find value or insight in this podcast, please rate and review. You ever hike The Grand Canyon? Havasupai Falls? No? Just me? Ok well you start by going down into the Canyon, then you walk flat for a bunch of miles then after you're sun beaten, sweaty and rancid you finish at the bottom at your campsite. Today we start our initial descent of the Top 50 College Basketball Programs of all time. 50-46 is revealed and there are some early surprises. We also discuss some of the great names in these program's history. Make sure to berate us on Twitter if you have beef with our list right off the bat. Finally, we cap it off with hugs.
Our big hiking/camping trip this year was going to be at Joshua Tree National park, but that got cancelled due to COVID-19. So, we reminisce about our camping trip to Havasupai Falls back in 2019. Eddie talks about his most memorable moments and not so fun moments. I talk about what I did to prepare myself to get a spot and our hiking journey through the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. so many waterfalls to die for! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sonia-velez7/message

In this solo episode, I review my 2019 goals achieved, share my audacious goals for 2020, and go inside-the-books of my business finances for 2018 versus 2019. (Yep- my real numbers in my business bank account!) Holistic entrepreneurship means that we bring our WHOLE selves to our businesses. Physical, spiritual, personal, relational, professional, educational goals are ALL relevant to our entrepreneurship. So I'm talking about them all in this episode. :) 2019 GOALS REVIEW: Physical Goals Met: Moved everyday! (minus 2 days when I was sick) Back squatted 106#!! :) Spiritual Goals Met: Journeying with my faith community, learning from the faiths of others. Nature Connection Goals Met: I really made a point of getting outdoors every single week into wild nature. At least once a week I went on a hike for exercise. I feel my body telling me when I need nature now! Also went on TWO epic backpacking trips to beautiful places: In April, I went to Havasupai Falls with my daughter for a mother-daughter backpacking trip. It was a highlight of my year. And yes, the water really is that blue! No filter! The harrowing chains to get down the LOOONG and slippery descent to Mooney Falls. My smile is hiding my terror…or can you tell I'm nervous?! Then in September: 55 miles in 5 days on the North Lake South Lake loop in the high sierras (John Muir Trail country) with my dear friend, Laura Joyce Davis. I had to control myself to only post 2 photos- seriously the most beautiful backpacking trip ever…and the best company. :) Ok, back to my goals… Relational/Family Goals Met: Finally (after 2 years saving!) went on a “real” family vacation to the Caribbean with my sister and her family. SO fun. Realized I need to prioritize daily time with family in 2020! (see below) Business Goals Met: Wrote & published Therapy in the Great Outdoors- A Start-Up Guide to Nature-Based Pediatric Practice with 44 Kid-Tested Activities. Grew Outdoor Kids OT to one more employee (our first COTA!) and added one group per week for a total of 6 weekly groups going now. Held the first Therapy in the Great Outdoors Training Retreat in November; filled to capacity with a LOOONNG waitlist now for future trainings! Wrote the 100-page ConTiGO (Connection & Transformation in the Great Outdoors) Approach Training Manual for retreat attendees to implement the approach in their own practices. Became more active showing up personally on Instagram and Facebook (but still struggle!) Started the Mind Your OT Business Podcast in March and did 17 episodes this year. Will be outsourcing some editing and publishing in the coming year to save time! Grew my business coaching practice to 5 monthly clients and plan to add 1-2 more in the coming year. Educational Goals Met: Took 25 PhD credits. (8 courses…this was too much!) Read A LOT of research about nature and children and OT! Continuing to see the PhD as a process of personal transformation and challenging my brain to think critically. NOW…MY(SOMEWHAT AUDACIOUS) GOALS FOR 2020: Physical: Move everyday! Back squat my body weight (~150#) Spiritual: Read literature from other world religions to inform my own faith and learn from others. Nature Connection: Solo backpacking trip. (Scared of this!) Backpacking trip to Trinity Alps in Northern CA. Wilderness Awareness course in Washington in April. Relational: Continue weekly breakfast date with Jose. Make 1:1 time for family; BE AWARE OF WHEN WORK IS TAKING OVER! (this is very important for me cause I love my work) Business: Promote Therapy in the Great Outdoors book more! Hold 2 more Therapy in the Great Outdoors Retreat Trainings in May and September 2020. Take on 1-2 more business coaching clients per month. Do at least 1 MYOTBiz podcast episode per month. Be more active on Instagram for OKOT, LinkedIn for promotion of business coaching for OTs and the podcast, be more present as a moderator for my FB group Therapy in the Great Outdoors- Nature-Based Therapy. OT Entrepreneurs Summit in May with Trish Williams! Create online course for Therapy in the Great Outdoors by August of 2020. Educational Pass my qualifying exams in October of 2020. Start pilot research in spring 2020 with OTD students. Write article on nature-based therapy for publication. Present posters at AOTA. Come find me there and introduce yourself! AND NOW THE PART YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR……BUSINESS FINANCES 2018 VS. 2019…AND MY 2020 INCOME GOALS! Be aware of the accrual vs. the cash-based method of accounting in your business books! I use cash-based. (listen to the longer story in the podcast) All amounts have been averaged for ease of reporting. 2018: Gross revenue $82,000 - NET revenue $5,000 (6% of gross revenue) My income 2018 (working very part-time while doing my PhD + teaching): $17,000 pay + $2000 profit first bonus = $19,000 Started using Profit First and You Need a Budget (ynab.com) in mid-2018, which made my income double in 2019…see numbers below! 2019: Gross revenue $161,000 - NET revenue $32,000 (20% of gross revenue) THIS IS WHAT LOOKING AT YOUR NUMBERS CAN DO FOR YOUR BUSINESS! Almost double your income and increase profit by OVER 200% (12% profit would have been double- a 100% increase, 18% triple- a 200% increase…but we made it to 20%)! My income 2019 (working part-time still doing PhD and teaching): $24,000 pay + $8000 profit first bonus = $32,000 My audacious income goal next year: $75,000 working part-time 20 hours per week and $200,000 gross revenue for the business. Here's how we'll do it: Keep doing groups at current rates. More business coaching. 2 more retreats (maybe 3!) Income from the online course.
Hiking to Havasupai (Havasu) Falls with Rizzo: Podcast Show Notes I Interviewed Rizzo from the famous Travel Instagram page miss_rizzo, about her experience of hiking to Havasupai falls in Arizona. Rizzo is an Arizona native and has been to over 54 countries. Please listen to the podcast episode above (or wherever you listen to podcasts). What Is Havasu (Havasupai) Falls and Why Should You Visit? Havasu Falls is also known as Havasupai falls and is located in Havasu Canyon. Havasupai Falls is located in a side canyon of the Grand Canyon and Havasupai means people of blue-green water. Pai means people. Its turquoise waters are absolutely breathtaking and everyone should experience the beautiful color of these falls at least once in their lifetime (if they are physically able to get there). It is a true desert oasis. While Havasupai falls is the most famous in this area, there are 5 other waterfalls fairly nearby: Fifty Foot Falls, Navajo Falls, Havasu Falls, Mooney Falls, and Beaver Falls all worth checking out. Havasupai Falls - Photo by Brittany Rizzuto: @miss_rizzo on Instagram How to Make Reservations to Hike Havasupai Falls Only 50,000 permits are issued a year to visit Havasupai Falls and you have to be on your game to get a reservation. Whether you are hiking to Havasupai falls to taking a helicopter there (which is on a first come, first serve basis, more about this later), you will need a permit to go there. Permits for the year become available on February 1st at 8 AM (Arizona time). There are many people trying to get their permit at the same time, so you need to be prepared to be quick at typing and know that your patience might be tested while waiting for the screen to refresh. You can get reservations at Havasupaireservations.com Length and Costs of Permits to Havasu Falls All permits are for 3 nights/4 days. If you only want to stay for 2 nights, then you still pay for 3 nights. It costs $100 a night per person for weekday (Mon-Thurs) or $125 a night per person on weekend nights (Sunday, Friday, Saturday). In the past, you used to be able to stay 4 nights, but you can only stay up to 3 nights now. Photo by @miss_rizzo on Instagram Hiking to Havasupai Falls - What to Know There are no towns near the trailhead, so they drove up the night before and stayed an hour away, then started the hike around 4 am the next morning. It first takes 8 miles hiking to get to the town of Havasu, then another 2 miles to get to the campground. That's a good 10-mile hike before you get to your campground, and there is no water in the first 8 miles. You need to be prepared with sunscreen and plenty of water/snacks to get you through that first 8 miles. Supai village is at the 8-mile mark. There is an office there where you check in. There is a little grocery store there, school for the kids, and a little information board for the hikes and maps. Take note that the hike into the canyon is far easier than hiking out. You've got to carry everything you need in, including your tent, water, food, clothes, cooking pans, etc. Rizzo went in the cooler season, so she needed lots of warm clothes to wear. If you're not the camping type, you can stay at the Havasupai lodge in the village, but you do need to book it well in advance. When you get to the waterfall hike, make sure you don't set up camp near the river, as the river rises. Many people camp next to Mooney falls, which is the fall after Havasu Falls. Fires aren't allowed there, so prepare accordingly. Photo by @miss_rizzo on Instagram Alternatives to Getting to Havasupai Falls: Mules or Helicopters You can take a mule or helicopter in. You do need to reserve mules ahead of time and they can carry your gear for $150 round trip. The Helicopters are first come first serve and the locals get first priority. It's not a guarantee to get on a helicopter and you are limited to one bag.
As a native of Utah, Jason grew up visiting the National Parks, Monuments, and other regions throughout the Western United States. That is where he first fell in love with the history and geology of the area. As he grew up, he continued to enrich his education and knowledge at nature camps and class trips throughout the Southwest. One of his favorite trips was down to Havasupai Falls and the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Even when he attended college in California, he continued to enjoy the diverse geological and ecological environments nearby. He has enjoyed camping, hiking, backpacking, and touring throughout the west for the last 20 years. One of his greatest loves is sharing his passion for the history, geology, and beauty of the Southwestern United States with the tours he hosts. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Jason about his experience building an adventure tour operation from scratch over the past six years. With tours running all over the southwestern United States (and now in Oregon!) it’s all about relationship-building. From customers to guides, to all those involved with making these unique experiences happen, building relationship and building trust have been the key to success. What You Will Learn in this Episode: Tips for hiring the best client-facing employees How to create an environment of constant improvement Staying connected to customers as you grow The little things you can do to create “Wow!” experiences Building great relationships with DMOs and vendors Why trust is such a crucial ingredient to success in this business From Point A to Point B For large tours on the open road, there is a ready solution: buses made specifically for the travel industry. For smaller group tours, Jason was not finding the right mode of transportation. Bench seats in an Econoline might work for very short distances, but not for a 5 to 12-day trip. Through dedication, research, and customization, Jason finally found the right van and now the comfort of travel is remarked on by customers almost as much as the destinations. That kind of attention to customer experience can set your company apart from the competition. When you’re in a business where the journey is literally as important as the destination, everything that happens between point A and points B becomes important. Navigating the Travel Ecosystem As a tour operator, Jason relies on DMOs for information and broader marketing initiatives. He relies on service providers like river rafting companies and glamping outfitters – who could easily undercut him and steal customers away. It all comes down to trust. That’s why developing relationships is important, from customers to all the players in the travel ecosystem. When you know and trust each other, the opportunity to cooperate gives everyone a fair shake. Wrestling for the same clientele can be nerve-wracking, but you have to put yourself out there and find the people and organizations that are a good fit.
