Born and bred in western Sydney, Heath Davis went from Western Weekender journalist to top Australian filmmaker. He's the man behind hits such as Broke, Book Week and the recent festive smash, Christmess. Heath chats to us about what inspires his movies, the issues facing the Australian film industry and reveals what's next.
In this episode I'm joined by The Blind Sea writer, director and editor Daniel Fenech, and the film's main man, Matt Formston. The Blind Sea follows Matt on his quest for sporting greatness to new heights, setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest wave surfed by a vision impaired male. Matt is a four time para surfing World Champion, former Paralympic Cyclist and World Champion. At the age of five, Matt was diagnosed with Macular Dystrophy, a rare eye condition that left him two life-changing things: 3% vision, and a desire ever since to do what everyone else says can't be done. Daniel Fenech is an award-winning director with over 15 years production experience in commercials, music videos and documentary style content. Daniel's most recent film prior to this was Christmess which he co-produced with the film's writer and director, Heath Davis. The Blind Sea is one of the most compassionate, moving and visually breathtaking documentaries I've seen in years. Matt's journey is nothing short of awe-inspiring and he's also very personable which makes The Blind Sea an even more enjoyable film to watch. Before we jump into it, I need to let you know I did have some recording issues at the very beginning of this episode and I missed out on the introduction, so if it feels like we jump strait into it, that's when the recording began. Anyway… enjoy.
In this episode, we explore the last of four suspects investigators have named in their investigation into Shane Stewart and Sally McNelly's murders. In the eighties, Heath Davis was a violent drug dealer with a tough reputation around town, who associated with other main suspects in this case. Davis says he's turned his life around today and that he has been unfairly targeted by investigators. But a witness in the investigation tells us there's more about Heath's past that he hasn't answered for, and she says it's time for the truth to come out.
In this episode, Joshua and Caleb are joined by Pastor Heath Davis of Pinnacle Church in Canton, NC. Local to western North Carolina, Heath grew up fishing with his family in some of our favorite streams. Before entering the ministry, Heath served ten years in the U.S. Military as a Marine. After service in the Marines, he braved public education and taught at Canton Middle School. Now, he serves as the Lead Pastor of Pinnacle Church which he planted in 2006. Heath fell in love with the river at an early age, but after his time in the marines and moving back to the mountains of North Carolina he pursued that love as a white water kayaker. It wasn't until a recent trip to Montana and catching fish on the Bighorn River that he became "hooked" on trout on the fly. In this conversation we discuss the connections between white water kayaking and fly fishing, we're reminded of some of the early frustrations of new anglers, and we hear one of the wildest stories of learning you're a father. Written and directed by Heath Davis, “Christmess” marks the big screen debut of acclaimed alternative rock band Middle Kids' Hannah Joy, while the film also stars Steve Le Marquand (“Last Train to Freo”) and Darren Gilshenan (“No Activity”).Le Marquand plays the role of a once famous actor who has been reduced by alcohol addiction to performing as Santa Claus in a mall. After accidentally meeting his estranged daughter (Nicole Pastor), he seeks help from his sponsor (Gilshenan) and a sharp-tongued musician in recovery (Joy) in order to win his daughter's forgiveness in time for the festive season.“Christmess” is produced by Daniel Fenech, Cindy Pritchard and Matthew McCracken. It is financed through crowd funding and the support of unnamed partners. Distribution will be handled by Bonsai Films.Production started on the light-hearted drama in Greater Sydney earlier this year. Le Marquand has starred in three of Davis' previous films “Book Week”, “Broke”, and “Locusts”. In addition to acting, Joy contributes original music to the film and also covers a famous Christmas song. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Full of pizazz and effortless charm, humble laid back Kya Stewart talks Australian Christmas comedy drama Christmess and more, including hands off her popcorn!
Heath Davis joins the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast to discuss Christmess which he wrote, directed and co-produced. If you keep up to date with the latest Australian film releases, you've no doubt heard about Christmess. It's getting a lot of buzz at the moment with sold out screenings on the East Coast, upcoming screenings in Western Australia and Tasmania. There's national media interest and you may have even spotted a digital billboard for the film on your way home from work. If you've already attended one of the screenings, you would have heard Heath talk during a Q&A. He's doing his best to travel around the country with the film which is admirable. This is a filmmaker who backs and believes in his work. Heath is one of Australia's most exciting filmmakers, and there are few filmmakers whose new films I anticipate more than his. If you haven't seen Book Week, I highly recommend it. Heath's other films include the crime thriller Locusts and Broke as well as a stack of shorts which have enjoyed success at Tribeca, Flickerfest, MIFF and more. Christmess follows Chris (played by Steve Le Marquand), a once famous actor who now performs as a shopping centre Santa Claus after his alcohol addiction puts a pause on his acting career. After bumping into his estranged daughter, he seeks help for his recovery in order to win his daughter's forgiveness. Christmess co-stars Middle Kids lead singer Hannah Joy in a breakout performance, and Darren Gilshenan in arguably the best performance of his esteemed career. Put simply, Christmess is unmissable. It's the perfect tonic to most of the mind-numbing Hollywood dross currently saturating mainstream cinemas. The Hunger Games Part 47… really? More and more Christmess screenings are popping up daily, so be sure to follow Christmess on socials to find out where you can see it near you. Anyway… enjoy.
Aussie indie filmmaker powerhouse Heath Davis is back with his fourth feature film, Christmess. This seasonally appropriate flick follows on fom his grounded work with his solid debut film Broke, in 2016. Heath quickly followed this up with the black comedy Book Week, before swerving into thriller territory with Locusts. Here we follow washed up alcoholic actor Chris Flint - the never better Steve Le Marquand - who's getting out of rehab just in time for Christmas. He arrives at the halfway house run by Nick - a phenomenal turn from Darren Gilshenan - only to meet a fellow recovering addict Joy - played by Middle Kids lead singer Hannah Joy. Together they aim to make the best Christmas they can have, while also getting Chris onto the path of some kind of normal.Christmess sees Heath at his very best, showing a drive and fight for indie storytelling here in Australia that we would usually attribute to that of the American indie filmmakers. There's a sense of honest Australiana at work here as the heat of a summer Christmas adds to the drama of day to day life. While Christmess skews towards drama more than it does comedy, it adheres to the Heath Davis mindset of seeing the best in people and setting about to write a film that allows the actors to bring that out in the most natural and genuine way possible. As a trio, Steve Le Marquand, Darren Gilshenan, and Hannah Joy are so completely watchable and engaging that you start to feel like you're home.Christmess recently had its world debut at the Austin Film Festival, receiving wide acclaim from filmmakers and audiences alike. Now Heath has headed out on the road, like every hard working indie filmmaker has to, with the film being received by sell-out audiences. The following interview sees Heath touching on that communal experience of cinema, while also discussing his working relationship with Steve, Darren, and Hannah.Christmess is a seasonal treat, and as it stands, it's one of the very best Australian Christmas films yet.To find out more about where Christmess is screening near you, visit the Facebook page for more details. New Zealand doesn't have a great track record when it comes to LGBTQI+ representation in sport. Earlier this week our first ever gay Black Cap, Heath Davis, spoke publicly about his sexuality and experience as a gay athlete, and so far there have been no openly gay All Blacks. That's not to say there are not or haven't been any, but perhaps none who felt comfortable enough or able to open up about their sexuality. Proud 2 Play is an organisation working to increase LGBTQI+ engagement in sport, and spokesperson Craig Watson joins us now.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I'm diving into Davis' story because it directly captures Yerba Buena and early San Francisco history, with an insiders look at how one, socially, and financially privileged, foreigner, experienced Yerba Buena, among other … socially and financially privileged foreigners and Californios.

There are only a few foreigners who lived in Yerba Buena, Alta California, long enough to see the province go from Spanish, to Mexican, to American rule. A person who lived through all that, would have a unique perspective of early Yerba Buena, and California history. William Heath Davis, is the most famous Yerba Buena/San Francisco resident, you've never heard of.

Numero dos is here. Heath regales us with his ultimate childhood Christmas memory, the story of "When Heath met Steve" (cue Harry Connick Jnr) and the infamous Steven Seagal story (albeit heavily redacted). Also my puns reach a new low as does the audio in the last 10 seconds due to uncontrollable connection issues. And if you enjoyed this episode more than Heath enjoyed the idea of strapping a go-pro to a gorilla, then please like, subscribe to stay updated on future episodes and leave a review as it really does help others find this show.Additional Links Daniel Fenech – Brick Studios: https://www.brickstudios.com.auCrowd Funding Campaign for CHRISTMESS : https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/christmess# See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
