Erna Walraven on her memoir about zoo-keeping and feminism, 'Hear Me Roar'In the early 1980s, when Erna Walraven decided to follow her dreams and become one of the first female zookeepers in Australia, she thought her biggest challenges would be feeding big cats and subduing irate gorillas. In fact, it was her male colleagues who made work miserable, harassing and humiliating her for doing a 'man's job'. So, she looked to the animals under her care to prove them wrong.Despite what Erna's colleagues seemed to think, the females of the animal world were far from weak and demure. Elephant matriarchs led their herds; female bonobos revelled in sexual exploration; emu mothers abandoned their chicks to the care of their fathers. Her colleagues wouldn't dare tell a female tiger that hunting was a 'male's job' - why were they so intent on limiting Erna? In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Erna Walraven about the sexist, male-dominated culture that greeted her when she first started working as a zoo-keeper at Taronga Zoo in 1983, the wonders of the animal world and what animals taught her about feminism, and how the culture of zoo-keeping has changed for the better.
Erna Walraven was one of the first female zookeepers to work at Sydney's Taronga Zoo in the 1980s. Despite practical jokes from her male colleagues, like animal dung in her gumboots, Erna kept her nerve. She was born in The Netherlands, to parents who were involved in the Dutch resistance during World War II.Erna's love of languages took her to Spain, where she lived for many years with her widowed sister and young nephew. It was there she met a penniless Australian backpacker and fell in love, starting Erna on the path to the rest of her life.Erna's memoir Hear Me Roar is published by Affirm Press. This episode was produced by Alice Moldovan. The executive producer of Conversations is Nicola Harrison. This interview was presented by Sarah Kanowski.

Meet the Mancunian Podcast: social impact stories from Manchester
A warm Mancunian welcome to all my listeners. In the fifth episode of Season 8 of the Meet the Mancunian Podcast, host Deepa Thomas-Sutcliffe welcomes Steve Goodman, Chair of Liv's Trust. They discuss Liv's Trust's mission to support young people in Greater Manchester by offering music and dance opportunities. Steve shares inspiring stories on how the Trust provides safe spaces and activities for youth, particularly those affected by the Arena bombing and the COVID pandemic. Listeners learn about the programs 'Hear Me Roar' music clubs, scholarships for arts education, and the significant impact made on the community. Steve highlights the importance of listening to and investing in young people, overcoming barriers, and fostering a supportive environment. The episode concludes with heartwarming anecdotes, emphasizing the transformative power of music and community support. In Steve's own words, [00:01:10] Steve Goodman: It's also a safe space for them to go. They come initially because they wanted the music, but some just come because they just want something to do in an evening. So many young people with nothing to do out there, and especially since COVID has hit. We decided that this would be something that we could do and help. Not only the young that Olivia wanted to help but others in the community. So we've extended it a bit and some come just to play pool or kick a ball about and have somewhere to come #dance #music #youth #GM #manchester #community #SocialImpact #NonProfit Hosted by Deepa Thomas-Sutcliffe (https://www.instagram.com/meetthemancunian/). Sunday, May 12th 2024 | Pastor Laura Wallace | “Our purpose as women is to be a helper. When women see the word helper, we tend to shudder, thinking that it means we are less than. We have turned the word helper into an ugly word. Helper is a beautiful word! Helper is translated to Ezer in Hebrew. Ezer means to provide support for someone who needs help, to assist and encourage, to rescue and to be strong. It implies great strength and help in dire, life-threatening situations! Men need women and women need men. God needs us both working together to bring His will, plan and purpose to the earth. When we know our purpose, there will be no confusion of who we are and why we were put on earth!” - Rev. Laura Leigh WallaceThen the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” Genesis 2:18 NLT
This past weekend was busy with incredible sports action, so much so that 'THE' Tony Hope and Noble Lewis recorded this episode of Hear Me Roar a day early as they couldn't wait to dive into conversation. The first segment of the episode covers the legendary event that was UFC 300, headlined by the Alex Pereira's first round knockout of Jamahal Hill and Max Holloway's literal last second knockout against Justin Gaethje. Tony and Noble analyzes the rest of the stacked card as well from the early prelims all the way to the main card. They then transition to the upcoming NBA Playoffs, but before we get there, we have to first determine the 7th and 8th seeds via the Play-In Tournament. Tony and Noble give their predictions and analysis on those games and the first round matchups of the playoffs. And then to wrap up the episode, the guys cover the developments in Rashee Rice's hit-and-run case and the federal charges Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's former translator, is facing for allegedly stealing over $16 million from Ohtani.
In this iteration of Hear Me Roar, 'THE' Tony Hope and Noble Lewis recap a historic WrestleMania 40 weekend including the conclusion of Cody Rhodes' story against Roman Reigns. They also talk about South Carolina's Women's NCAA Championship win over Caitlyn Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes, and UCONN's Men's Championship win over Purdue. The MLB season is less than three weeks old, yet we are seeing a widespread increase in elbow and shoulder injuries amongst starting pitchers; Tony and Noble breakdown what is causing this. They also talk about how the Basketball Hall of Fame needs to restructure their criteria and the Cowboys actively regressing this offseason.
In this episode of Hear Me Roar, 'THE' Tony Hope and Noble Lewis talk about the Texans trading for Stefon Diggs, making him the newest addition to an already stacked offense. They discuss the successful franchise altering offseason that they have had as well as the implications this trade has on the future of the Buffalo Bills. They then transition to the NBA where they dive into the hectic Eastern and Western Conference standings. Tony and Noble talk about Julius Randle being out for the remainder of the year, James Harden and the Clippers' struggles, the 76ers getting Joel Embiid back, and the up-and-down Phoenix Suns holding on to the 6th seed. Finally they talk about the excuses Ronda Rousey made in a recent interview about her upset loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193.
This episode of Hear Me Roar is chock full of entertaining content and it starts off with Tony Hope and Noble Lewis discussing the NFL's banning of the swivel hip drop tackle and the new kickoff format that will be implemented next season. Tony and Noble then dive into the news breaking story surrounding Shohei Ohtani's interpreter allegedly stealing $4.5 million from him in order to pay off gambling debts. Another sports betting scandal emerged, this time concerning Raptor's forward Jontay Porter and suspicious prop bets. Tony and Noble also talk about the L'Jarius Snead trade to the Titans, the very baffling bite that took place in the UFC last weekend, and which fighter would they have by their side in a bar fight.

In this episode of Hear Me Roar, Tony and Noble fully breakdown Super Bowl 58 and offer in-depth analysis into some of the key plays that got the Kansas City Chiefs the victory over the San Francisco 49ers. They dissect the Chiefs' stellar defense and offer commentary on the 49ers playcalling throughout the game. Tony and Noble highlight the individuals who particularly had great performances for both teams as well as look at the likelihood of a Chiefs threepeat. Finally, the WWE makes the main event of night 2 of WrestleMania 40: Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes. But, was this a work all along, or was WWE creative forced to pivot directions?
Tony Hope and Noble Lewis are back with another episode of Hear Me Roar, and in this episode, they kick it off by giving their analysis on the Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. More specifically, which unit will NEED to have the most success in order for their team to win the Super Bowl. They then transition into speaking about the NBA trade deadline and breaking down all of the moves that were made, such as Bojan Bogdanovic being traded to the Knicks and Buddy Hield to the 76ers. UFC 298 is a little more than 1 week away and it is shaping up to be a banger of a card headlined by a featherweight title fight between champion Alexander Volkanovski and challenger Ilia Topuria.

This episode of Hear Me Roar starts off STRONG with Tony Hope mincing no words when discussing the hot topic of the NBA's 65 game rule. The fiery dialogue continues as Tony and Noble get into the recently released NBA All Star reserves. But, there's one particular individual missing and Tony is pissed about it. The show then transitions to the latest NFL coaching news, including Lions' OC Ben Johnson and Texans' OC Bobby Slowik electing to remain with their respective teams for another season; the Seahawks hiring former Ravens DC Mike Macdonald to be their new head coach; and the Cowboys losing Dan Quinn, their DC for the last 3 season, to their division rival Washington Commanders. Finally, Tony and Noble talk about some of the all-time playoff runs and Noble plays (and sucks at) "Who Dat Is?"
In today's episode, Tony and Noble discuss NFL Championship weekend! Starting off with the San Francisco 49ers big comeback win against the Detroit Lions and answering the question, "Has Brock Purdy silenced his critics?". They also talk about the Kansas City Chiefs championship caliber performance against the Baltimore Ravens in order to book their trip to Las Vegas for Super Bowl 58. As the NFL's season is winding down, the NBA season is picking up the pace, and Tony and Noble dive into last week's explosive scoring games. WWE makes it's first appearance on Hear Me Roar, as the guys talk about the Royal Rumble pay per view, and Noble plays "Who Dat Is?" once again.

In this episode of The Empowering Dietitians Podcast, host and dietitian supervisor Jess Serdikoff Romola is talking all about ANGER in the field -- what, as a dietitian, might you feel angry about? Whether it's the lack of pay and respect, how ill-prepared you felt coming out of school, social justice issues, and everything in between - there is a lot to be angry about. Jess goes through the purpose that anger serves, as well as its limitations, to help us have a better relationship with our anger, and learn how to funnel it in a more sustainable, values-aligned way. PLUS, if you're tired of the burnout and bitterness your anger as a dietitian have been bringing up in you, check out Jess' upcoming masterclass, Channeling Rage: What to Do When Your Anger About Dietitian Hustle Culture Feels Paralyzing. It's happening on April 25th at 7pm ET, and it's specifically about the anger and rage that is so common once dietitians start learning about the systemic roots of hustle culture. Rather than being paralyzed by that anger, or propelled forward by hatred, this masterclass will dive deep into anger as both an emotion and an advocacy tool, to help you move forward in a way that is both sustainable and aligned with your values.
